NEW DELHI: Former India opener Virender Sehwag has taken a dig at Chennai Super Kings' faltering IPL campaign, saying that some of their batsmen think of the franchise as a "government job" in which remuneration is assured irrespective of performance.

Chasing 168, veteran opener Shane Watson struck his second successive fifty to give CSK a perfect start on Wednesday, but the team choked at the back end of the innings and was restricted to 157/5 to suffer its fourth defeat in five matches.

"It should have been chased down. But the dot balls played by Kedar Jadhav and Ravindra Jadeja didn't help," Sehwag told 'Cricbuzz'.

"And, in my view, some of the Chennai Super Kings batsmen think of CSK as a government job, whether you perform or not, they know they'll get their salary anyway," he added.

CSK added just 14 runs from 11-14 overs, a period when they lost both Watson and an in-form Ambati Rayudu. Sent ahead of West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, Kedar Jadhav laboured to seven off 12 balls as KKR won the game by 10 runs.

This is not the first instance of batsmen letting the team down. Last week, the MS Dhoni-led side had lost a closely fought match to Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven runs after a top-order collapse.

The three-time champions have four losses from six games and are placed sixth in the eight-team standings. They will take on Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday.

If RCB can't beat them today then RCB is again playing based on their psyche (as usual) and not their merit. This CSK is not only one of their worst side but also one of the worst ever IPL side (likes of Pune Warriors, Kochi Tuskers...)

I use to admire the level of respect between the ex indian players. Though I had heard stories of conflict between Dhoni and some senior players but never believed them beacuse of their public admiration of dhoni.

But now when Dhoni is fast loosing his public stature, the seniors like sehwag and even ghambir are settling their scores with dhoni and confirming all the past controversial media stories.

These are pretty standard comments by ex-cricketers.

Sehwag and Dhoni got along quite well. Gambhir is like Warne who wanted to pick a fight with everybody.

If you watch talk shows of players who played for 7-8 years with Dhoni like Bhajji, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Zak, Gambhir or even VVS, not one of them speak very positively about Dhoni except for the normal PR stuff. Once he fades away, my sense is even guys like Kohli, Rohit, Dhawan, Ashwin will not have much to say about him.

I can tell you as a CSK fan, our current team is extremely depressing. There are plenty of talented Indian batters and we selected Vijay and Jahdav in 2020 lol.

Also selected Hazelwood,Ngidi,Tahir, and Santner and we are not using them. Our issue is our batting, Watson and Faf are our only specialist overseas batters.

I hope we make major changes for the next IPL season.

Haha clear dig at dhoni

So much for the more professional indian cricketers board and set up

Tahir was the highest wicket-taker of IPL 2019 with 26 wickets.
He performed well in recent CPL . He is proper T20 bowler.
Didn't get a chance ,absolutely nonsense.

They should leave him for mid season transfer, at least franchises like Punjab will buy him.

Tahir should have gotten more game time. If we have no plans on using him, why did we keep him?

Why do you feel everyone has an axe to grind with Dhoni? I haven't heard anyone genuinely praising him. I think its because they feel Dhoni doesn't deserve the status he enjoys. As a player he was mediocre compared to his teammates. He inherited a team from Ganguly and took all the credit for world cup victories. Sehwag,Gambhir,Harbhajan etc feel Dhoni did politics and used his connections with CSK to end their careers. Only Kohli says nice things about him because he gave him the captaincy.

Ravindra Jadeja with the bat has always been a choker. Cannot remember a single match he has won for India and his Franchise with the bat

That is true but he has been more than handy with the ball and a gun fielder throughout his career. He was never supposed to be a legend. I would believe he has achieved his potential. He took 200 test wickets at 25 avg.

Sehwag is like a typical Haryanvi bus conductor.. full of sarcasm in every line he speaks.. :41::41:
those who travelled in India between Chandigarh and Delhi on Haryana Roadways would know..

He was the butt of jokes when he made his debut, a complete dud. Considering that, he has done extremely well in his career. He was never meant to be a great player in the first place.

He is a utility cricketer.. every team needs some to be be greater part of the total sum.
Decent test bowler.. Gun Fielder. He saves around 5-10 runs.. So yeah he has done much better than expected.

Dhoni has always been a toxic politician. Just that he is no longer the player he was and has garnered too much negative press due to his 'exploits' on and off the field for so many years now.

And Sunny was saying Dhoni has greater fan following than even Tendulkar. He couldn't be more off the mark.

Dhoni is a good captain, a great ODI batsman, in T20 cricket he has underachieved.

He is lucky he is Indian where the amount of adulation he enjoys overall is far disproportionate to his cricketing skills and achievements

He achieved many things, won 4 ICC trophies, he deserved all the praise.

Thats true.

Watson's retirement from his govt job is one match away now.

At its peak, a great match winner though.

‘Time to hand it over to next generation’ - MS Dhoni says CSK need to ‘slightly change core group’

Chennai Super Kings bowed out of the ongoing season of Indian Premier League but managed to held their head high, ending the season with three consecutive wins. With their win over Kings XI Punjab on Sunday, MS Dhoni-led CSK also ended KXIP’s hopes of qualifying to the playoffs. But Dhoni is not one to shy away from admitting when there is a change to be made, and after the match, the CSK captain said that the franchise will look forward to make a few changes in their core group.

“It was a difficult campaign for us. I don’t think we played to the full potential. We did commit a lot of errors at different points in the tournament,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“The last four games, it could be a template as to where we would have liked to be. If you are lagging too much, it becomes very difficult to push yourself and come up with performances. That’s where each and everyone had to contribute. Very proud the way they played their cricket,” he added.

“It would have been very tough 6-7 games. You won’t want to be in a dressing room that is not really enjoying cricket. You want to keep coming up with different ideas but if the dressing room atmosphere is not happy, it becomes very tough,” he further said.

Dhoni went on to add that CSK will be handing over more responsibilities to the next generation in the coming year. “A lot depends on what the BCCI decides upon the auction. We need to slightly change our core group and look for the next ten years. At the start of the IPL, we made a team and it served well. There comes a time where you have to shift a bit, hand it over to the next generation,” Dhoni signed off.

Shane Watson has informed CSK that he's retiring from all forms of the game and further won't be part of the IPL also.
