IPL replacements : Alex Hales replaces Warner Post#81, Heinrich Klaasen replaces Smith Post#98

Alex Hales, England opener, has joined Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as David Warner’s replacement for the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL). He has been bought for his base price of Rs 1 crore from the Registered and Available Player Pool (RAPP) list.

Hales, who was a part of Mumbai Indians (MI) for the 2015 edition, is yet to make his IPL debut. With Warner being handed a one-year ban by Cricket Australia (CA) for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also barring him from participating in the tournament, it looks like Hales could open the innings alongside Shikhar Dhawan.

Till date, he is the only England player to score a T20I century. Hales is also the top-ranked English player and the only one to feature in the top-10 list of the ICC T20I rankings.

SRH will begin their IPL 2018 campaign against Rajasthan Royals on April 9.

Hales in an excellent choice! Would be interesting to see how he does. Root is probably the ideal Smith replacement as well.

RR said they don't want a similar batsmen to Smith. They want a more aggressive batsmen. So Root and Amla won't be signed by RR.

Alex Hales is a very good signing. Him and Dhwaan give SRH an explosive opening.

Rajasthan royals already decided to pick henrich klassen. They are just waiting for approval.

Yes they want Klaasen but there is some confusion as he wasn't originally part of Auction and is under some extended list category, so that is reason they haven't got approval till now.

RR already have Rahane and Smith will be back next year.

There is no point in picking Root or Amla. If they pick Klaseen, that is a perfect choice. He can keep gloves too.

Hales is an Ok choice. He's very inconsistent. Kushal Perera or Mendis' would have been a better choice

Hales is a 'meh' signing. Someone like Ronchi would've been a great pick too [if applicable].

How about Dawid Malan..HE is and good striker and he can also build his innings when required(plus he is an left hander)...He was also in good form in the tri series recently..

Hmm that's fair. Didn't know that. To be fair they have Rahane who can do that role in T20's anyways so makes sense.

Yes it's a good decision. They are planning the squad for when Smith returns and for the next few years.

With K Perera rejecting the offer & Amla signing for county, Lendl Simmions would have been a good choice for SRH. Simmons is under rated and he has a decent IPL records for MI. But Hales is a good player.

It's official now, Heinrich Klassen has replaced Steven Smith in the RR squad.

Hales and Klassen - both excellent choices. In terms of their star value, not a patch on Smith and Warner but both of them could end up being IPL superstars.

New Delhi: The BCCI today officially approved South African wicket-keeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen as the replacement for former Australian skipper Steven Smith in the Rajasthan Royals team for upcoming edition of Indian Premier League.

Smith has been barred from this year's IPL after Cricket Australia banned him for one year for his involvement in the ball tampering controversy during the third Test match against South Africa in Cape Town.

"The wicket-keeper batsman was picked for INR 50 lakh from the Registered and Available Player Pool (RAPP) list," BCCI stated in a media release.

The 26-year-old Klaasen recently made his international debut against India in 50-over format and picked up the Man of the Match award in his second ODI. He then made his debut in the shortest format of the game in the following three-match T20I series. He has so far played four ODIs and 3 T20 Internationals.

Just INR 50 lakhs ($75000) for Klassen, could be one of the best picks by Royals. They will have BUttler, Sanju Samon and Klassen as keeper batsmen, I would expect Samson to take the gloves and other two to play purely as batsmen.

Stokes, Buttler, Klassen and Jofra Archer as the 4 overseas player with D'arcy Short as a potential replacement for one of them.

Good riddance. Smith is a poor T20 batsman and captain. Klassen would be exciting to watch.

Still a very poor squad. In fact any T20 squad captained by Rahane would be poor.

Darcy Short,Stokes,Buttler and Archer should be the overseas pros IMO.This will strengthen the batting.Who are the local stars for the Royals?

Not too many - only Rahane is a known name. Others are Unadkat, Dhawal Kulkarni, Binny and Sanju Samson

Thats a pretty weak squad compared to the other teams..

With a similar squad (only Dhoni is missing who was misfiring most of last season), Pune made it to finals last year under Smith's captaincy. Their plans have been derailed but then they have Warne as their mentor this year, expect these unknown players to punch above their weight.

Theres also Rahul Tripath, whoi was among the top scorers last season IIRC. And Binny would probably find it hard to even make the XI:

Ajinkya Rahane (captain), D’Arcy Short, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson (wk), Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Shreyas Gopal, Krishnappa Gowtham, Jaydev Unadkat, Dhawal Kulkarni

They have 4-5 decent all-rounders in there.

Dhawal Kulkarni leaks too many runs.

My RR XI will be:

1 Ajinkya Rahane (C)
2 Rahul Tripathi
3 Sanju Samson
4 HEINRICH KLASSEN
5 BEN STOKES
6 JOS BUTTLER (WK)
7 Stuart Binny
8 JOFRA ARCHER
9 Krishnappa Gowtham
10 Jaydev Unadkat
11 Shreyas Gopal
