What's new

Is Asif Ali the clean striker we need in the middle overs?

why are you complaining about about asif ali. He's a great power hitter. i wouldn't mind him in odi or T20 pakistan team.

ODI TEAM:
Farhan
Fakhar
harris
babar
sarfraz
talat
asif ali
faheem
shadab
amir
hassan

He isnt good enough for ODIs, doesn't have the middle game you need to succeed.

Keep him at t20s, if he shows improvement there then we can move him forward.

People have to remember he averages 19 in List A and 20 in first class, that's can be ignored due to a good PSL.

You do realise 2 of his 3 sixes in the last over were off short balls.

He definitely has a problem with the short stuff. In both those sizes he set himself up early for the short delivery because he knew that's how he was being targeted. Outsmarted the bowler and read the game well which is a great sign but doesn't change the fact that he has a problem with the short delivery.

+1

He has earned a spot in T20Is but shouldn't be in contention for ODIs as of yet. He hasn't done much when he played up the order.

Which Pakistani batsmen doesn't have a problem with the short ball?

Should open with Fakhar in T20s and even ODIs if they can get creative ... Just have Asif play the Colin Munro/JJ Roy role!

Firepower at the top will make it easier for others to bat in middle overs.

The big question is, why are his domestic stats so ridiculously poor?

I admit he look like a decent hitter but its hard to believe that he is reliable when he has such a poor average over a decent number of games.

Most Pakistani batsmen have a problem with the short ball because there trigger movement is too late and the forward press is too pronounced so they end up playing the pull with their weight on the front foot which is most cases, unless it’s a very slow/low pitch, will end up in the ball going straight up in the air. Asif was camped on the back foot after Kamran dropped him. Because he knew what was coming.

I've been a big supporter of Asif Ali right from PSL 1 and to be honest he can be Pakistan's Jos Buttler. However I was extremely disappointed with his post-match interview. To me his post-match interview summed up why this guy has a List A average of 18 and FC average of 21.

He said that despite the management telling him to take a few balls to get set, he prefers to hit out from ball 1 because that's his natural game and he believes if he can get set by hitting sixes than why start off by taking singles to get set. That is a complete hack approach to cricket which is why you see his T20 stats to be a lot better than his List A and FC stats.

I'm disappointed because this guy has a lot of ability. His hitting is sweet and doesn't resort to across the line shots. If only he develops the patience to stay at the wicket at the start of the innings before hitting out, he will develop into a deadly ODI batsman for Pakistan at number 6. What is required for him is a change in mentality otherwise this guy is magic.

Bring Asif Ali into the national side or else I´m going to break by TV into pieces! What a clean hitter he is! Marvelous hitting yesterday!

Errm... Okay. Why break your TV. Lol.
According to sources, Asif Ali and Hussain Talat will make their debut against W.I.
Hussain Talat however is too raw in my opinion. Needs to be considered for odi/tests after another full season. He lacks temperament.

This guy has an average of 18 in List A and 26 in T20. I havent seen him play but if there is no added dimension to his cricket like bowling a few overs then he is gonna be found out if played as a pure batsman. ( disclaimer: i havent seen him play)

YouTube Asif Ali may be?
Or better still get a scorecard of isb where he scored and watch highlights of that.
I can assure you however, he is the cleanest striker in Pak after sharjeel Khan.

clean hitter but has no middle game, hence his abosultue failures in other formats. A t20 player only IMO

He should bat at 6 or 7 or should be promoted if pak doesn't lose many wickets upfront.
Please don't make him open, he is better at death.

So, inzi realized that we found no.6 batsman in lols, i hope he will be slected in odis too

Haven't seen a batsman hit like a fast bowler like that for Pakistan since the days of Afridi and Razzaq.... His 3rd six of Hassan Ali was the best one... And for a long long time we were whining about not having clean hitters in our rank. This man is should be a permanent fixture in our side I hope.

He fits a specific role and that's about it.

Pakistan doesn't have a big hitter and he does the job well in T20s. Of course, if they ask more of him (i.e. open the innings or play ODIs) then he'll fail.

Needs to be inducted in the squad asap, and observed for if he has the ability to chase down big totals so a systematic setup is formed where we can chase down run totals in excess of 200, like its happening all over the world. It should be like clockwork and the whole batting lineup should know its strenght and weakenesses, and where Asif fits into that.

I would suggest integration be started asap because we generally have no idea hows its done.

When we do that we will find out if he has what takes to be present in the big run chases, or he just another Afridi...

We don't just need big hitters, we need hitters who can hit when its required, and we need hitters who actually hit when the required rate is high, and he knows what exactly needs to be done to take the team home when chasing a big target. Like Mr. Ice cool. Ab sirf hitter hona kaafi nahi hai, you need to be a winner while chasing big targets.

Hitters tou bohat aaye hain, but are they winners or just blind sloggers?

Still confused who is this guy Jos Butler, Chris lynn, Munro or j roy?? I’m glad it’s not an an Indian this time

We are almost a year away from the world cup in 2019. PCB's priority should be to try him out in all the T20s we play and hopefully he can perform well enough to make a case for a spot down the order in ODIs. If he can give us a quick-fire 30 odd in each match down the order then he will be fulfilling his role.

Pretty much a limited slogger but in T20s you can get away with maybe 1 player like that in your team, probably will get found out against top quality bowlers internationally.

Bad luck today but he should have been sent before Malik, just to get his eye in...Although Malikhas been exceptional, no harm done

Can't blame him. The situation warranted an aggressive approach

Like this he will have hard time time becoming a permanent member of Pakistan T20 team. He needs to play smart and try to become a permanent member of the team first.

Keep him in T20s for now. Don't want to drop someone after 1 bad series when we don't have many players who can hit 6s at will like him.

I think hes an afridi. Will click twice out of 10 but we still need him as we have no one better. He will walk in with everyone hopeful for a finish but we will be left sad. I hope im wrong but his domestic stats make me think that way

Exactly what I was thinking another afridi but for now we still need him he will fire when it will matter

Most players don’t take international cricket by storm in their first few matches. Give him some time.

He is someone to be persisted did. 1000 times better than the likes of iftikhar Ahmed. He has the ability what he lacks is proper nurturing and training. Hopefully Mickey and the coaching staff can work with him and develop his game.

His striking ability is very good. Need few games under his belt. I think it would be very useful if he has senior pro like Malik at other end who could guide him.

Asif actually is a good T20 prospect - still not finished product, but he isn't 35 either. He ha a mighty bat swing and he can get under the ball better than most PAK players - it's not easy to hit Hasan 3 times in a row to crowd, which indicates his power and timing. He is a type of player, if works on his game, should do better on AUS wickets because of the bounce. He plays squire of the wicket better, but a bit slow in reflex because of being groomed on PAK domestic wickets. Can be a valuable asset at 5/6 in 2020 WC.

What about ODI?

What about ODI?

No way - not now at all.

His best utilization is like 20/150 player in T20 and should be expected like that. If you look at his domestic careers, his T20 average is by far higher (26/140) compared to FC (21) and List A (18/89). For almost a decade long career, in 89 innings of FC+List A, he has 6 innings of 50+, while already 7 in 75 T20 innings and he comes at 5/6 in T20 - all these indicates a very poor defense and poorer shot selection, but guy is an instant hitter. He was never picked for age level teams (can't see any U16, U19 notification in CI), and never picked for a Corporate team - means, this good form could be temporary and this is his peak.

Ideally, he should work with Grant on his hitting technique and be an absolute T20 specialist - doesn't need to play even FC either, rather should focus entirely on T20 & List A (& improve fielding).

you look at his domestic record and it becomes pretty clear that this guy isn't very good

he's a decent hitter, but I don't see him as a long term member of the team - we need someone who can give you more than the odd 30-40 runs every few games

In principle I agree with what you say, now that we have such a strong tail including a proper batsmen like Shadab coming in at 8, we can afford to have a loose cannon like Asif in t20s, especially when we lack any real power hitters

problem with Afridi was that for a long time we had a crap tail, so his lunacny got exposed.

how would you guys judge him after 3 games?

Should he stay as a finisher? or needs to be shown the door?

Done enough to hold his spot for another series.

WHat i like about him is that he has the confidence in himself to finish a match with a few blows.

But this guy cant stay at wicket. He can only hit

Should I take credit for this thread. Lol
I rate this guy's hitting ability. He seems like an impact player and going by his record I'm domestic, he is a chaser and that's what we lack. Stick with the guy and he may win the 2020 world cup for you. I'm not joking.

Asif ALi is basically an Afridi.

No he is not. His today's innings had more defensive shots than Afridi ever played in his whole career. While all the big hits were clean shots not half shots.

Lets see what Mickey+Grant can mould him into. He has great potential.

4 is the perfect position for Asif in T20s. Fakhar & Asif compliment Babar & Talat which ensures good RR is sustained instead of innings stagnating. Malik can come in at 5 and Faheem at 6.

Sarfaraz should only bat when team is in crisis else he should take a backseat in T20s and just be more of a specialist captain. :))

another thing i love about this guy is that he could play with the bounce. WOnder if he could hit on Australian wickets.

Btw when is our next t20 series?

This guy is a serious talent and not just as a hitter but as a pure batter I believe

Hold your horses. We have seen this with Sohaib Maqsood, Umar Akmal etc already. You need to give guys like Talat and Asif Ali some space. Let them play few series before making them look like finished products.

Btw when is our next t20 series?

As per the FTP we play 1 t20 in Zimbabwe as part of our tour there in Aug - sept

Then we play one more t20 vs Aus in the UAE in October, followed by one more against NZ in November

So only 3 games

In jan 2019 we play 3 t20s vs South Africa in South africa.

I expect that series will seperate the men from the boys

Asif Ali can’t be worse than Harris Sohail. Debut him to ODIs now! He can be opener

His vibes were very cringy and doesn't seems he would survive the next ball , he need to develop rotation game . Seems unlikely that he would stay for long in national colors.

From what I saw in this series, I think he's fine for T20Is, but in ODI's, I can't imagine him doing well in places like England, NZ, Australia and SA. So I'd limit him to T20Is only, for now at least.

121 off 97 balls today! He hasn't got the best List A stats so was against him being in the ODI side - I said he should stick to T20s only in other threads but if he performs like this throughout the tournament, maybe he could be tried against Zimbabwe

64 off 64 balls for him today batting at 4. Wonder why his List A average is so low if he is capable of this

Their is potential their and needs to be given a good run to see what he can do....would also like to give sohail akhtar a chance as well for t20s
