Is Covid-19 just a death sentence for the elderly & people with underlying conditions?

How do we beat it? Seems like so many people are just dying and losing the battle to this illness.

Today another person I know has passed away - mid 70s.

To me anyone over 70 stands little chance of survival. There is no way to beat this now.

A man in the US who is 104 years old has recovered.

I woul like to ask ..

Is this virus a mutation or evoloution of the Spanish flu. As this man and other elderly people who were infected by the Spanish flu which is actually swine flu, have been recovering?

A young man with underlying condition has more chance of losing the battle than an elderly with good health

It is a case to case basis. Elderly are in riskier side because with age, underlying causes become more frequent than younger ones.

It's not just underlying conditions that increases risk, as you get older your immunity system gets weaker. There's a huge difference in the immunity of a 20 year old and a 60 year old.

What is immunity? Why immune system gets weak?

- underlying causes (it doesn't mean only diseases).

Italy has the highest death rate right now and it's mainly cause of 3 reasons
1. Old population
2. Widespread smoking addiction
3. Ischemic heart disease among the elderly

Keeping people locked inside, with fear and distress , little excerise ruins their immunity.

I never stay in unless Im sleeping.

No.

Please dont spread such stuff around. Keep all old people out of harms way and keep them indoors and isolated until this threat is over

Your immunity naturally weakens as you get older. You lose testorone, estrogen and other hormones as you get older. You lose muscle mass. You're cells start dying and your hairs fall and turn gray, your skin wrinkles up, this called aging. Old people have a weaker immunity, it's natural.

Over the past 2 weeks in UK, 7 of my friends have lost parents - each of them lasted just 3-4 days in the hospital.

Yes theres a higher chance of dying but in no way is it a death sentence for the elderly

Theres a good majority that survive it of who you dont hear about

even one death of your loved one, is one too many.

Older people are more likely to die from this virus. It is why they need more attentions.

I don't want to call it a death sentence but it is very dangerous for them.

It's not a certain death sentence. People from that demography are more likely to die when compared with young and healthy individuals, that's about it. It is just a question of that's about it.

Data from Italy and Spain

I think most people aren't aware that a high blood pressure counts as an underlying condition. Since only a medical test can determine whether one has high blood pressure or not it could be that many people have it but are unaware.

Nice graphic representation of various data can be found here:

Imo this is wrong information, not you but in general.

Older means the older the person is the more likely they will die as a result. However those who were around when the Swine Flu emerged(Spanish Flu), infected seem to be resiliant to COVID19. I dont have exact stats but the cases known is showing this.

I don't know where i advocated of elderly people coming out of house

The question is, is it a death sentence for elderly people? The answer is, as in every other disease, case to case basis.

No two human bodies are same and hence, affect of any alien substance/organism will be different.

Probability goes higher in case of elderly people but that doesn't constitute as a death sentence.

On the contrary, people suffering from auto immune disease, transplanted organs will have even higher probability than elderly people regardless of age.

My point is dont take it lightly.

Of course EVERYTHING is case by case but far too many lives are being lost because elders are taking it easy thinking they exercise regularly etc and will be fine.

Spreading it as a death sentence.... Do you really think it won't create a panic attack, emotional stress among aged people? Even if someone suffers from a regular flu who already has a hypertension, he or she might be put into ICU only because of a panic attack and NOT because of sars cov 2.

You shouldn't take it lightly. I agree.

But one shouldn't spread it as a death sentence which has a more chance of doing harm than any good.
