You know this Argentina team is awful when Messi has to come in his own half just to get the ball. Team has no midfield and he was mostly playing as defensive midfielder against Modric and Rakitic.
Portugal may not have great individual players but they are very well organized and disciplined side unlike Argentina. Their management has defined roles for each player so that Ronaldo doesn't have to play in different positions. That team is putting heart and sole for their talisman

Can someone who retires at 30 with no international silverware really be considered the GOAT? All succeeding club achievements will have an asterisk over them given he won't have the international workload if he does retire.

Hilarious how some posters are trying to paint Portugal as a well-organised and robust team. 
All you need to do is go back and watch their first two games, their defense is non-existent, and midfield is nothing special either. Ronaldo is literally carrying them all by himself so far, especially the first game against Spain.

This is a very timely thread.
On one hand I have seen Messi played his worst game ever (against Croatia) while on the other hand I have seen Ronaldo playing with his greatest luck ever (4 goals in 5 shots) (2 free goals against Spain).
People have short term memories. Couple of years ago everyone were on board in saying Messi is ahead of Ronaldo and even agreed that there is a daylight between them with Messi being the superior player. I also believe that a year or two down the line with Messi having age on his side people will again jump bandwagons over to Messi's side.
Overall, Messi is a level above Ronaldo and this is a fact which is well documented.

Ludicrous.
Only four years ago, Ronaldo flamed out spectacularly with a better squad than he has today. His Portugal team this WC also plays with far better tactics and a more rounded, if not as talented squad as Messi’s Argentina. Portugal is trying to pull off upsets against teams that control possession by using the counter attack. Yes, Ronaldo might be better on the counter than Messi at this point, but accepting a counter attack strategy basically concedes long term success. Portugal is fine with that, while Argentina is not. Maybe Argentina is unrealistic.
Argentina has an embarrassment of riches on the attack but they don’t remotely fit together well. Playing Messi behind a classic striker like Aguero or Higuain pushes Messi back into a midfield role which is not very effective. Messi would be more useful on the wing with Aguero in the middle. Of course that further exposes the lack of midfield talent. Meza is
Messi is only great because he is surrounded by talent at FCB? Whereas Ronaldo is stuck with getting passes from scrubs like Isco, Modric, Kroos and Casemiro? Or maybe that is the best midfield in the world and the real key to RM’s success.
Also, the idea that Ronaldo is playing amazingly well is a bit off. He had a nice hat trick against Spain, but he has hardly been dominant or spectacular. He is also asked to do far less (Portugal is giving up possession and trying to counter) and has basically no expectations but to come in second in their group and get booted in the first knockout game.
Maradonna spoiled us, after watching him everybody is simply second rate. Never seen anyone with close to his dribbling abilities.

It's not just about those 10 perfect dribbles to, he also managed to actually put the ball behind the net and held his nerve on the biggest stage. People have pointed out how defenders, pace and athleticism etc were all inferior; not like Diego had an unfair advantage over them then being a product of that same era so it all levels out. However, it's not hard to see that he was incredibly skilful and more importantly very tough mentally when he put that national shirt on he could handle the pressure.

Ronaldo, 33, had the consolation of being awarded the prize for best striker chosen by journalists and Champions League and Europa League coaches from last season.
Modric's success, after he was named the best player at the World Cup, means that the 32-year-old should be among the favourites to win the Ballon d'Or, a prize dominated by Ronaldo and Lionel Messi over the last decade.
Ronaldo, a five-time winner of the world player of the year award, signed for Italian champions Juventus this summer from Real Madrid for 100 million euros ($116.5 million).

The current Juventus player, who played for the club in Italy the night before, arrived smiling and giving a thumbs-up, apparently unfazed by the media presence.
His lawyers had argued that given his fame, avoiding the main entrance was needed for the player's security.
Journalist Ruben Canizares posted a video of the footballer arriving at the provincial court with his fiancee Georgina Rodriguez.
Ronaldo, five-time winner of Europe's Ballon d'Or and often titled one of the world's best players, was accused of avoiding paying tax in Spain between 2010 and 2014, when he was playing for Real Madrid and based in the Spanish capital.

Ronaldo, 33, said rape was "an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in".
The investigation was originally closed in 2009 but reopened days before Ms Mayorga filed a civil lawsuit in September.
The civil case is still open against the footballer.
A statement from the Clark County attorney's office said: "Based upon a review of the information presented at this time, the allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
"Therefore, no charges will be forthcoming."

It was another record-breaking night for Cristiano Ronaldo, despite Robbie Keane's best efforts to steer him away.
The Juventus forward netted four goals as Portugal beat Lithuania to take his overall tally to 25 in European qualifying - two more than the previous record set by former Republic of Ireland striker Keane.
Before the match, Keane asked Ronaldo to "leave this one" after pointing out the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was two goals away from his record.
"I think you have enough records, Cristiano!" Keane joked on Instagram.
But after scoring against his 150th different team for club and country, there was no stopping Ronaldo netting his eighth international hat-trick and stealing the limelight.
Ronaldo has now scored 93 international goals, 16 behind Iran legend Ali Daei's world record in men's football and is also the first European to score 90 goals for his country.
The 34-year-old is the leading scorer in European Championships.
He has netted 34 goals in total - including nine in final tournaments, which is also a joint-record with Frenchman Michel Platini.
Those goals came in four successive tournaments - 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 - with one in the semi-final victory over Wales during Portugal's title-winning campaign three years ago.
No other European has scored more goals in competitive international fixtures, with Ronaldo netting 72, including the first goal and a hat-trick in the Nations League Finals when he put three past Switzerland in the last four in June.

The investigation was originally closed in 2009 but reopened in August last year, shortly before Ms Mayorga filed a civil lawsuit in September, offering details she initially withheld. She said she had gained the courage to speak out because of the #MeToo movement.

The thing to remember about these stats and they are amazing stats is that football has changed beyond recognition. In the good old days defenders good kick lumps out of attackers with little fear of consequences. They could go through the back of attackers and it wasn't even a yellow card. Whether Maradona would have had the stats that Ronaldo and Messi is an academic point, as is whether these 2 would have coped with kicked in the pre 94 era.

The project involves a major new build element, as well as the refurbishment of the Grade II listed 19thCentury Halls Building bedside it.
The new hotel building designed by FCBStudios will use a distinctive arched window design clad in terracotta concrete to enhance the building surrounds.

Clancy Consulting is both civil and structural engineer on the job with Crookes Walker Consulting on board as building services engineer.

Barcelona were awful though. Messi was unlucky to miss out on a few occasions, and Ronaldo could have had a hattrick of penalties if a couple of other close handball calls had gone in Juve's favour.

Messi actually played better than Ronaldo who got 2 penalties, and Messi is not even interested in playing Barcelona these days. The only reason he turned up yesterday was because of Ronaldo’s presence on the pitch.

The first part is arguable. Messi had more shots on target, but most of them were easy takes for Buffon. Even his freekick was on target but had no power to defeat the goalkeeper. Yes, he did create a few chances, and dribbled past the defenders on some occasions as well, but his finishing was not clinical enough.
Ronaldo won the first penalty, and scored both times. His goals gave his team the opportunity to finish as group toppers and avoid tough opponents in the RO16, such as Bayern, Liverpool or City. He was well involved in the defensive play after the first 2 goals, dropping in the backline on multiple occasions.
Messi not being interested in playing for Barcelona is a myth. Yes, had a few problems with the board led by Bartomeu. However, now that the latter is gone as per his wish, he has no reason to show this lack of interest. The thing is that Barcelona are playing awful football nowadays, and Messi being out of form has a huge impact on the team's result.

Class is permanent and no disrespect to Buffon but why did Messi fail to get passed an old timer in his 40s, especially when you consider the skills which Messi has. Agree on Ronaldo having won the pentalties ultimately and making sure the team topped the group, wonder what folks make of both teams chances in the tournament from here on
