Is Cristiano Ronaldo the GOAT?

You know this Argentina team is awful when Messi has to come in his own half just to get the ball. Team has no midfield and he was mostly playing as defensive midfielder against Modric and Rakitic.

Portugal may not have great individual players but they are very well organized and disciplined side unlike Argentina. Their management has defined roles for each player so that Ronaldo doesn't have to play in different positions. That team is putting heart and sole for their talisman

thats a terrible excuse mate.

Pretty sure he will retire again after Argentina fail to make the knockouts.

Can someone who retires at 30 with no international silverware really be considered the GOAT? All succeeding club achievements will have an asterisk over them given he won't have the international workload if he does retire.

His legacy has taken a battering in a matter of weeks.

I hope he shows mental strength and carries on playing at the international level.

Sir Alex knows CR best and he summed him up perfectly - Ronaldo can play in any team (League), on any ground, across every attacking position and stands alone.

Hilarious how some posters are trying to paint Portugal as a well-organised and robust team. :))

All you need to do is go back and watch their first two games, their defense is non-existent, and midfield is nothing special either. Ronaldo is literally carrying them all by himself so far, especially the first game against Spain.

This is a very timely thread.

On one hand I have seen Messi played his worst game ever (against Croatia) while on the other hand I have seen Ronaldo playing with his greatest luck ever (4 goals in 5 shots) (2 free goals against Spain).

People have short term memories. Couple of years ago everyone were on board in saying Messi is ahead of Ronaldo and even agreed that there is a daylight between them with Messi being the superior player. I also believe that a year or two down the line with Messi having age on his side people will again jump bandwagons over to Messi's side.

Overall, Messi is a level above Ronaldo and this is a fact which is well documented.

What is this free goal nonsense, at least try to be a little objective. Messi could have scored a 'free goal' too against Iceland.

Post is just an absolute pile of rubbish.

Lucky to score 4 goals in 2 World Cup games, including a hat trick against Spain?

Ludicrous.

Messi without the likes of Iniesta, Xavi, Rakatic, would not have achieved the level of success that he has achieved.

It’s absolute nonsense to say that Ronaldo is not a play-maker. I have seen him play exquisite passes, pin-point crosses, amazing through-balls - however as he plays predominantly as a CF in a fixed formation (as opposed to a flexible one) he is less focused on those aspects.

Anyway - Messi only ever played for Barcelona with amazing playmakers and has been successful. However, which Argentina, he hasn’t achieved the same level of success.

Ronaldo has been successful with Man Utd, Real Madrid and Portugal hence more proof that he relies less on players around him and more in his own abilities.

Only four years ago, Ronaldo flamed out spectacularly with a better squad than he has today. His Portugal team this WC also plays with far better tactics and a more rounded, if not as talented squad as Messi’s Argentina. Portugal is trying to pull off upsets against teams that control possession by using the counter attack. Yes, Ronaldo might be better on the counter than Messi at this point, but accepting a counter attack strategy basically concedes long term success. Portugal is fine with that, while Argentina is not. Maybe Argentina is unrealistic.

Argentina has an embarrassment of riches on the attack but they don’t remotely fit together well. Playing Messi behind a classic striker like Aguero or Higuain pushes Messi back into a midfield role which is not very effective. Messi would be more useful on the wing with Aguero in the middle. Of course that further exposes the lack of midfield talent. Meza is

Messi is only great because he is surrounded by talent at FCB? Whereas Ronaldo is stuck with getting passes from scrubs like Isco, Modric, Kroos and Casemiro? Or maybe that is the best midfield in the world and the real key to RM’s success.

Also, the idea that Ronaldo is playing amazingly well is a bit off. He had a nice hat trick against Spain, but he has hardly been dominant or spectacular. He is also asked to do far less (Portugal is giving up possession and trying to counter) and has basically no expectations but to come in second in their group and get booted in the first knockout game.

Maradonna spoiled us, after watching him everybody is simply second rate. Never seen anyone with close to his dribbling abilities.

It's not just about those 10 perfect dribbles to, he also managed to actually put the ball behind the net and held his nerve on the biggest stage. People have pointed out how defenders, pace and athleticism etc were all inferior; not like Diego had an unfair advantage over them then being a product of that same era so it all levels out. However, it's not hard to see that he was incredibly skilful and more importantly very tough mentally when he put that national shirt on he could handle the pressure.

This. Plus creative players are given more protection from defenders by referees nowadays as opposed to back then. In the 70's it was even worse, how good George Best would have been today.

MILAN (AFP) -
Cristiano Ronaldo was hopping mad at losing out to Croatia star Luka Modric for the UEFA Player of the Year, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri revealed on Friday.

Real Madrid and Croatia midfield star Modric beat his former teammate Ronaldo and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah to the prize which was awarded on Thursday in Monaco.

"Yesterday he (Ronaldo) was very angry, and it's only normal," said Allegri.

"He scored 15 goals in the Champions League and won the trophy with his teammates.

"The attitude of Ronaldo shows how much he continues to strive and work to be still the best. This is an advantage for us."

Allegri added that the choice of Modric was "a personal choice" of those who voted "and, as such, must be respected."

Ronaldo, 33, had the consolation of being awarded the prize for best striker chosen by journalists and Champions League and Europa League coaches from last season.

Modric's success, after he was named the best player at the World Cup, means that the 32-year-old should be among the favourites to win the Ballon d'Or, a prize dominated by Ronaldo and Lionel Messi over the last decade.

Ronaldo, a five-time winner of the world player of the year award, signed for Italian champions Juventus this summer from Real Madrid for 100 million euros ($116.5 million).

The Portuguese superstar's agent Jorge Mendes slammed the decision as "simply ridiculous".

"He scored 15 goals, carrying Real Madrid to the Champions League win once again," Mendes told Portuguese daily Record.

"This is not the winner, he's (Modric) the best player in the world in his position," said Mendes.

Ronaldo had won the UEFA award three times in the previous four years.

Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has cut a deal with a court in Madrid over tax evasion charges, accepting an €18.8m (£16.6m) fine.

A huge media presence met the player outside the court, after a judge refused his request to appear by video or to enter the building by car to avoid the spotlight.

The deal, agreed in advance, includes a 23-month jail sentence.

But in Spain, convicts do not usually do time for sentences under two years.

The non-violent nature of Ronaldo's offence means he is unlikely to spend any time at all in jail, serving it on probation instead.

The court appearance lasted mere minutes as Ronaldo accepted the deal offered by prosecutors.

The current Juventus player, who played for the club in Italy the night before, arrived smiling and giving a thumbs-up, apparently unfazed by the media presence.

His lawyers had argued that given his fame, avoiding the main entrance was needed for the player's security.

Journalist Ruben Canizares posted a video of the footballer arriving at the provincial court with his fiancee Georgina Rodriguez.

Ronaldo, five-time winner of Europe's Ballon d'Or and often titled one of the world's best players, was accused of avoiding paying tax in Spain between 2010 and 2014, when he was playing for Real Madrid and based in the Spanish capital.

Forbes lists the 33-year-old as the third-wealthiest athlete in the world, with estimated earnings of $108m (€95m) a year.

The case centres around lucrative image rights deals. Prosecutors say the proceeds were funnelled through low-tax companies in foreign nations to avoid paying the required tax.

In court, as part of his deal, Ronaldo acknowledged four incidents amounting to €5.7m owed, according to Spanish-language news agency EFE.

In 2017, when the allegations first emerged, prosecutors said it was a "voluntary and conscious breach of his fiscal obligations in Spain".

Why are Spanish football stars in legal trouble?
But Ronaldo's lawyers said it is all down to a misunderstanding over what was and was not required under Spanish law, and deny any deliberate attempt to evade tax.

The deal, struck in June last year, had to be agreed with Spain's tax authorities.

Ronaldo is not the only high-profile player to face the wrath of Spain's tax system.

His former Real Madrid team-mate Xabi Alonso also appeared in court on Tuesday in connection with similar offences amounting to about €2m.

Alonso was appearing before the court for the first time, facing a potential sentence of up to five years. Unlike Ronaldo, he has not yet struck any deal with authorities and has maintained his innocence.

Shortly after Alonso's trial began, the court suspended proceedings to consider whether it was competent to hear the case, or if it should be referred to another criminal court, EFE reports.

The longer sentence prosecutors are seeking means that Alonso could, unlike Ronaldo, face jail time.

There are several other examples of footballers facing Spain's courts in recent years:

Barcelona star Lionel Messi avoided a jail sentence for a similar scheme involving image rights, paying several million in a "corrective payment" in back taxes and fines

Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior was at the centre of a row when Barcelona was fined millions after being charged with tax fraud over Neymar's signing - but avoided admitting the offence

Real Madrid's Marcelo Vieira admitted to tax fraud and accepted a four-month suspended jail sentence over his use of foreign firms to handle almost half a million euros in earnings

The recent crackdown on high-profile footballers follows the removal of a tax exemption in 2010. Known as the "Beckham law", it had allowed footballers to curb their taxes.

Ronaldo also faces another ongoing legal battle: the football superstar is accused of rape in Las Vegas in 2009, a charge which he denies.

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged with improper conduct by Uefa for his celebration after beating Atletico Madrid to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The 34-year-old appeared to mimic Atletico boss Diego Simeone, who turned to fans and grabbed his crotch during his side's 2-0 first-leg victory.

Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in the return leg as Juventus won 3-0.

Simeone was fined 20,000 euros (£17,000) for his celebration.

Juventus have been drawn to play Dutch side Ajax in the quarter-finals.

Although sports media rarely highlights this facet of the soccer star, Ronaldo has always been close to the Palestinian cause

Portuguese footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo, donated US$1.5 million to the people of Palestine during the backdrop of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The donation by the Juventus star striker is intended as a gesture of solidarity and to alleviate the pain felt by Palestinians, especially in the Gaza Strip where the relentless blockade of land, sea and air access imposed by Israel has greatly impacted the quality of life of its people.

Although sports media rarely highlights this facet of the soccer star, Ronaldo has always been close to the Palestinian cause, publicly rejecting the illegal and genocidal incursions of the Israeli regime on several occasions.

In November 2012, while Gaza was being blanketed with bombs by Israel in their Operation Pillar of Defense, Ronaldo auctioned off his Golden Boot, the prestigious award given to the best European strikers of the season, to raise funds that were later donated to the Palestinian children.

The following year, in March 2013, at the end of the match between Portugal and Israel for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, he refused to exchange his shirt with an Israeli player. Although he shook hands, he excused himself by explaining that he could not wear a shirt with that country’s flag, as reported in the press.

Ahmad Daubasha, a 5-year-old boy who was the only survivor of a Palestinian family attacked by Israeli settlers, was received by Ronaldo in 2016 at the Real Madrid training center where he photographed himself with the boy and gave him a shirt dedicated especially to him.

GOAT has won another trophy.

Congratulations Ronaldo and Portugal!

Can you stop insulting the goat :cr7??

Obviously Ronaldo's THE GOAT

Cristiano Ronaldo will not face prosecution over allegations of sexual assault in Las Vegas 10 years ago, lawyers say.

The Clark County District Attorney's Office announced on Monday it "will decline to prosecute" a sexual assault allegation made in 2009.

The Portuguese forward was accused in September of sexually assaulting American woman Kathryn Mayorga in a hotel room in Las Vegas in June 2009 - a claim he denied.

Ronaldo, 33, said rape was "an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in".

The investigation was originally closed in 2009 but reopened days before Ms Mayorga filed a civil lawsuit in September.

The civil case is still open against the footballer.

A statement from the Clark County attorney's office said: "Based upon a review of the information presented at this time, the allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

"Therefore, no charges will be forthcoming."

It was another record-breaking night for Cristiano Ronaldo, despite Robbie Keane's best efforts to steer him away.

The Juventus forward netted four goals as Portugal beat Lithuania to take his overall tally to 25 in European qualifying - two more than the previous record set by former Republic of Ireland striker Keane.

Before the match, Keane asked Ronaldo to "leave this one" after pointing out the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was two goals away from his record.

"I think you have enough records, Cristiano!" Keane joked on Instagram.

But after scoring against his 150th different team for club and country, there was no stopping Ronaldo netting his eighth international hat-trick and stealing the limelight.

Ronaldo has now scored 93 international goals, 16 behind Iran legend Ali Daei's world record in men's football and is also the first European to score 90 goals for his country.

The 34-year-old is the leading scorer in European Championships.

He has netted 34 goals in total - including nine in final tournaments, which is also a joint-record with Frenchman Michel Platini.

Those goals came in four successive tournaments - 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 - with one in the semi-final victory over Wales during Portugal's title-winning campaign three years ago.

No other European has scored more goals in competitive international fixtures, with Ronaldo netting 72, including the first goal and a hat-trick in the Nations League Finals when he put three past Switzerland in the last four in June.

And his tally of 30 goals in European World Cup qualifying is another record.

Who has Ronaldo scored against?
Ronaldo has netted against an impressive 150 different teams while playing for clubs and country.

Just under a third of those have been against other nations (40), while just 17 have been in friendly matches.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has a knack for leaving it late too, with 26 of his 93 international goals coming in the last 15 minutes.

He has scored more goals with his head (25) than with his left foot (22) and in the 61 games he has scored in, Portugal have gone on to lose just five of them, winning 51.

Interestingly - outside of penalty shootouts - Ronaldo has never scored against European giants France, Germany, Italy or England.

He has scored five goals against Andorra, Armenia, Latvia and Sweden - more than any other nation.

Cristiano Ronaldo admits he felt “embarrassed” by allegations he raped a woman in Las Vegas.

The Portuguese forward was accused of sexually assaulting American Kathryn Mayorga in a hotel room in June, 2009 - a claim he denied.

The investigation was originally closed in 2009 but reopened in August last year, shortly before Ms Mayorga filed a civil lawsuit in September, offering details she initially withheld. She said she had gained the courage to speak out because of the #MeToo movement.

Prosecutors announced in July they would not be prosecuting the case because the allegations could not "be proven beyond a reasonable doubt".

The civil case is still open against the footballer.

Ronaldo admits the allegations have taken a toll on him.

"They play with your dignity," Ronaldo told 'Good Morning Britain' in an interview with Piers Morgan that will air on Tuesday.

"It's hard. You have a girlfriend, you have a family, you have kids. When they play with your honesty, it's bad, it's hard.

"I remember one day I was at home in the living room with my girlfriend watching the television to see the news and they speak about 'Cristiano Ronaldo this and that.'

"I listened to my kids coming down the stairs and I changed the channel because I was embarrassed.

"I just changed the channel for Cristiano Jr not to see that they speak bad about his father about a very bad case."

During the interview, Ronaldo also became emotional when speaking about his father, Jose Dinis Aveiro, who passed away aged 52 in 2005 due to cirrhosis, two years after he joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon.

Ronaldo broke down into tears when shown footage by Morgan of his father praising his son for Norwegian TV shortly before he died.

"I never saw that video. Unbelievable," Ronaldo said. "I think the interview would be funny, but I didn't expect to cry. But I never saw these images. I don't know where you... I have to have these images to show my family.

"I really don't know my father 100 per cent. He was a drunk person. I never spoke with him, like a normal conversation. It was hard.

"To be the number one and he don't see nothing, and he don't see to receive awards, to see what I became.

Cristiano Ronaldo says he wants to win more Ballon d'Or awards - the trophy for the world's best player - than his main rival, Lionel Messi.

Juventus forward Ronaldo, 34, has won the prize five times - as many times as 32-year-old Barcelona forward Messi.

"Messi's in the history of football - but I think I have to have six or seven or eight to be above him," said Ronaldo on ITV's Cristiano Ronaldo Meets Piers Morgan.

"I'd love it, I think I deserve it."

Cristiano breaks Robbie Keane's scoring record
Ronaldo, who won 15 trophies in nine years at Real Madrid, including four Champions League titles, hopes to be remembered as one of the best players the game has ever seen.

"I'm sure I'm in the history of football for what I have done and what I'm continuing to do, but one of the best players in history," the Portugal captain added.

"For me, the number one in history, but for some fans, if the number one is another one and I'm second, it doesn't matter.

"I know I'm in the history of football as one of the greatest ever."

Ronaldo is definitely one of the greatest players of all time. I rate Messi higher than him but I still consider him as a legend.

Cristiano Ronaldo moved one strike away from his 700th career goal as Portugal edged closer to Euro 2020 with a 3-0 win against Luxembourg.

Manchester City's Bernardo Silva opened the scoring before Ronaldo chipped over Anthony Moris.

Valencia's Goncalo Guedes completed the scoring just before full-time.

Portugal remain second in Group B, five points behind Ukraine, but four points clear of Serbia in third.

Ronaldo will have the chance to become just the sixth person to score 700 goals when Portugal travel to Ukraine on Monday.

Fernando Santos' side can qualify with a win in Kiev, if Serbia fail to win in Lithuania.

Cristiano Ronaldo reached a career landmark on Monday by scoring his 700th career goal in Portugal's Euro 2020 qualifier at Ukraine.

The 34-year-old scored a penalty as Portugal lost 2-1.

His 700 goals so far have come from 973 matches - and he has scored at least once in 458 of those.

His goal in the 2-1 loss to Ukraine was also his 95th for Portugal, leaving only Iranian Ali Daei in front in the international charts on 109 goals.

The win for Ukraine, meanwhile, means they have qualified for Euro 2020.

Ronaldo's goal means he joins an elite group of players to have hit at least 700 goals in their career.

According to data from Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation, Juventus forward Ronaldo is still some way behind the most prolific player of all time, with Czech-Austrian Josef Bican scoring 805 career goals.

Next on the list is Brazil legend Romario, who bagged 772, while his compatriot Pele is third on 767.

Hungary legend Ferenc Puskas hit 746 goals, while former Germany striker Gerd Muller rounds out the top five with 735 goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo reacted angrily after he was grabbed by a pitch invader at the end of Juventus' 2-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

The Portuguese, 34, gave Juventus the lead in the 75th minute with his 128th Champions League goal, before Gonzalo Higuain added a second late on.

After the final whistle, a fan ran on to the pitch and put his arm around Ronaldo as he tried to get a selfie.

Ronaldo pushed the fan away before security staff intervened.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner, who held his neck after the incident, had hugged another fan who came on to the pitch during the match.

Juventus had already qualified for the last 16 as group winners.

It was Ronaldo's third goal in as many games and his ninth of the season.

"I feel good - the annoyance I felt has passed and the team is in good shape," he said after the game.

"Today we played a good second half. We are all growing and even I personally felt better today, more confident, and I hope to continue like this."

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/50749868

I saw the game. It was the 3rd pitch invader in the space of 5 minutes. It gets annoying when some people bring the match to a halt just to get a selfie with Ronaldo or Messi.

On topic, yes, he is the GOAT.😁

No - Johan Cruiff was far better player in his position; while Fat Ronaldo definitely & probably Gerd Muller, Van Basten we’re better scorers.

Spot on!
Do you agree or disagree that maradona was the greatest footballer of all time?

Agree :) Between 1985 to 1987, for Agres & Napoli, he was absolutely unstoppable.
Again you are spot on!
He could have carried that form on for longer if he had not had such a bad boy attitude and started hanging out with mafia bosses and taking drugs and God knows what else. Maradona and his best mate claudio cannigia ruined fantastic careers and the chance of winning the '90 world cup.

Absolutely crazy stuff from Ronaldo.

What a freak of nature.

Was a master of freekicks during his Manchester United days and was excellent till 2014-2015.

The greatest header of the ball in football history.

The man you can trust to take and score a penalty in the 93rd minute of the game absorbing the whole pressure.

He can score with both his feet without any problem, his weak foot being extremely powerful.

The complete GOAT. What a header though. He literally jumped at a height of more than 8ft. Unbelievable.

He won a ballon d'or after 4 years.

Apart from that, Ronaldo deserved it last year as well, it was strange to give it to Modric of all people.
Modric winning wasn't strange at all, he was the best player at the WC and had the narrative of leading an unlikely team like Croatia to the Final.

He's inferior to Pele as a goalscorer and as a COMPLETE PLAYER, Messi is the GOAT.

Only person in history who is top 3 of all time as a goalscorer, playmaker and dribbler.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first Serie A hat-trick as Juventus beat Cagliari.

Ronaldo took advantage of a Ragnar Klavan error early in the second half to give the champions the lead, before scoring a penalty after Marko Rog fouled Paulo Dybala.

Portugal legend Ronaldo then set up Gonzalo Higuain to put Juve 3-0 up.

And moments later he got his 56th career hat-trick when he slipped the ball under goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

The 34-year-old is in his best scoring run since his £99.2m move from Real Madrid in 2018, scoring in each of his last five Serie A games.

Juventus overtake Inter Milan to go top in Serie A, but Inter can go back to the summit if they beat Napoli at 19:45 GMT.

It was Ronaldo's second hat-trick for Juve, having scored three against Atletico Madrid in last season's Champions League last-16 tie. He has scored three hat-tricks for Portugal since then.

The former Manchester United forward is the first player since Alexis Sanchez to score a hat-trick in the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A.

The man who has repeatedly proved himself in the Premier League, in La Liga, with his national team, and now is shining in a defensive league like Serie A.

Modric winning wasn't strange at all, he was the best player at the WC and had the narrative of leading an unlikely team like Croatia to the Final.

According to your logic, Xavi, Iniesta or even Sneijder should have won the ballon d'or in 2010, since the latter won the treble with Inter during that season, and even reached the WC Final.

You can't advocate in favour of Modric for winning it in 2018 and then downgrade these 3 despite giving better performances in 2010.

Maradona still shades it for me. So no Cristiano is not the GOAT.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two penalties to take his tally to 10 goals in his last six games as Juventus beat Fiorentina 3-0.

The hosts were first awarded a spot kick for handball in the first half and Ronaldo swept home the penalty.

Rodrigo Bentancur was fouled inside the box towards the end of the second half and Ronaldo again converted.

Matthijs de Ligt then headed in a third in injury time.

Ronaldo has now scored in nine successive Serie A games for Juventus, becoming the first player to do so since David Trezeguet in December 2005.

He has also scored 50 goals in just 70 appearances since joining the Italian giants in 2018.

The win strengthens Juventus' place at the top of the table, with 54 points from 22 games - six clear of InterMilan.

Cristiano Ronaldo will not return to Italy amid the coronavirus pandemic after his Juventus teammate Daniele Rugani tested positive for COVID-19.

Ronaldo, the Portugal forward, returned to his homeland to visit his mother, who recently suffered a stroke, before Rugani’s illness was confirmed.

He is now stuck in Madeira and cannot return to Italy, the European country worst hit by coronavirus with over 12,000 cases and a death toll which has passed 827.

Ronaldo has quarantined himself in Madeira amid the health emergency

Rugani was pictured in the Juventus dressing room alongside Ronaldo and his other teammates after last Sunday’s defeat of Internazionale, and now everyone who came in contact with the 25-year-old defender must be isolated.

His positive test for COVID-19 was announced by Juventus on Wednesday.

“The footballer Daniele Rugani has tested positive for Coronavirus-COVID-19 and is currently asymptomatic,” read a statement.

“Juventus Football Club is currently activating all the isolation procedures required by law, including the census of those who have had contact with him.”

Ronaldo, 35, has been self-isolating since testing positive for the virus on 13 October and recorded another positive result last week.

Juve boss Andrea Pirlo said they would have a definitive result on Tuesday evening.

Ronaldo last played in Portugal's 0-0 draw with France on 11 October.

Juventus will definitely be without defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Matthijs de Ligt, while Leonardo Bonucci and Paulo Dybala will both be assessed for the game in Turin.

The 1995-96 Champions League champions beat Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 in their opening game of this year's group stage.

Their opponents Barcelona are set to be without midfielder Philippe Coutinho, after the ex-Liverpool player injured his left hamstring in Saturday's 3-1 El Clasico defeat against Real Madrid.

The length of the 28-year-old's absence will "depend on how the injury evolves", according to Barca.

Barcelona beat Ferencvaros 5-1 in their opening group match.

Cristiano Ronaldo criticised the Covid-19 testing system as Juventus left him out of the squad for the Champions League game against Barcelona.

The 35-year-old has been self-isolating since a positive result for the virus on 13 October, and had another test before Wednesday's match.

The Italian club would not comment on whether he tested positive again.

Ronaldo said he was "feeling healthy" on social media and then lambasted the PCR test.

The result from a PCR test reveals whether someone currently has the virus or not.

The ex-Real Madrid player was set to face Barcelona forward and rival Lionel Messi for the first time since 2018.

Ronaldo last played in Portugal's 0-0 draw with France on 11 October.

Juventus will also be without defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Matthijs de Ligt for the game in Turin, while Leonardo Bonucci and Paulo Dybala will be assessed.

The 1995-96 Champions League winners beat Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 in their opening game of this year's group stage.

Barcelona are set to be missing midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who injured his left hamstring in Saturday's 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid in La Liga.

Portugal and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has recovered from coronavirus, testing negative after self-isolating.

Ronaldo, 35, tested positive on 13 October and missed Juventus' 2-0 Champions League defeat by Barcelona on Wednesday following another positive test on Tuesday.

During his absence he missed two Serie A games, plus the Italian champions' first two European matches.

Ronaldo last featured against France in the Nations League on 11 October.

Prior to his positive test, Ronaldo had scored three goals in Juventus' first two league games.

The Champions League group-stage draw had set up the possibility of Ronaldo and Barcelona's Lionel Messi - with 11 Ballon d'Or awards between them - being reunited on the same pitch for the first time in two years.

Their next opportunity to do so will be in the reverse fixture on Tuesday, 8 December at the Nou Camp.

Andrea Pirlo's Juventus face Spezia in Serie A on Sunday (14:00 GMT).

Ronaldo scores again in Portugal 7-0 rout

Cristiano Ronaldo moved one goal closer to the all-time international goalscoring record in men's football as Portugal thrashed Andorra.

Ronaldo, 35, scored his 102nd goal for his country with a powerful header and is now seven behind the record of Iran's Ali Daei.

Wolves forward Pedro Neto also scored on his debut - one of five Wanderers players in the Portugal squad.

Michy Batshuayi scored twice for Belgium as they beat Switzerland 2-1.

And Leicester winger Cengiz Under scored as Turkey and Croatia drew 3-3.

With 127 places in the latest Fifa rankings between Portugal (seven) and Andorra (134), the logic of a friendly before two rounds of Nations League matches could be questionable.

Juventus forward Ronaldo was left on the bench as a precaution after picking up an ankle injury against Lazio last weekend and replaced Neto at the break.

He scored Portugal's sixth goal with five minutes left with a thumping header.

These numbers are insane and if you just take the numbers then he is the GOAT for sure. But of course, it doesn't always work like that. I think Maradona is the best player ever but his numbers are nowhere near Ronaldo's.

Who would have thought anybody getting close to Ali Daei's record never mind having a chance to surpass it. I mean Daei was probably banging in goals for fun against the likes Kuwait, Maldives and Outer Mongolia etc.

The thing to remember about these stats and they are amazing stats is that football has changed beyond recognition. In the good old days defenders good kick lumps out of attackers with little fear of consequences. They could go through the back of attackers and it wasn't even a yellow card. Whether Maradona would have had the stats that Ronaldo and Messi is an academic point, as is whether these 2 would have coped with kicked in the pre 94 era.

Ronaldo double gives Juventus victory

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in four minutes as Serie A champions Juventus beat Cagliari and climbed to second in the table.

Ronaldo found the net in the 38th and 42nd minutes to lift Juve from eighth place, putting them a point behind leaders Milan, who have a game in hand.

The Portuguese draws level with Milan's Zlatan Ibrahimovic on eight goals at the top of the Serie A scorers' list.

Milan travel to fourth-placed Napoli on Sunday.

Juve have played a game more than all of the rest of the top five, so their occupation of second may only be temporary.

With four wins and four draws, they remain unbeaten in the league this season, alongside Milan and third-placed Sassuolo.

That includes a 3-0 over Napoli, a result that was awarded when Napoli failed to fulfil a fixture in October.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s plan to build a 150-bed hotel overlooking Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester has got the green light.

Pestana hotel to open in Spring 2023

The Portuguese footballer’s hotel firm Pestana aims to build the £27m 11-storey hotel at the corner of Piccadilly and Newton Street where a derelict building has been hidden by hoardings for more than a decade.

The project involves a major new build element, as well as the refurbishment of the Grade II listed 19thCentury Halls Building bedside it.

The new hotel building designed by FCBStudios will use a distinctive arched window design clad in terracotta concrete to enhance the building surrounds.

Clancy Consulting is both civil and structural engineer on the job with Crookes Walker Consulting on board as building services engineer.

Tendering for a main contractor is expected to take place in the Spring with an appointment due in the early autumn and then work starting in October.

Simon Doody, Partner, FCBStudios said: “The corner site is long overdue for redevelopment and in a prominent position that requires a strong architectural presence.

New building will feature an open-air rooftop bar

“The vaulted archways wrapping around the building offer an honest representation of the repetitive nature of the hotel brief, resulting in a contextual and elegant façade design. This sets the tone for the 4* hotel and transformation of the Piccadilly area.”

2.5 years later and he still is going strong.

Undoubtedly the GOAT.

Did Messi die?

In all seriousness, one of the goats for sure. Almost any other era and he would've been the best of his generation. Messi is just a touch above him.

When it comes to The Champions League, no one comes ahead of him. The GOAT for me.

Barcelona were awful though. Messi was unlucky to miss out on a few occasions, and Ronaldo could have had a hattrick of penalties if a couple of other close handball calls had gone in Juve's favour.

It was great to see both the GOATs on the same pitch after 2.5 years.

Messi actually played better than Ronaldo who got 2 penalties, and Messi is not even interested in playing Barcelona these days. The only reason he turned up yesterday was because of Ronaldo’s presence on the pitch.

Messi will always be better than Ronaldo. He is the most complete attacker ever and rivaled only by Maradona. However, as pure goal scorers, Ronaldo and Messi are equal.

Ronaldo has never been able to compete with Messi as a playmaker. That is the real difference between the two.

Agreed. Ronaldo is very unlucky that he played in the Messi era.

The first part is arguable. Messi had more shots on target, but most of them were easy takes for Buffon. Even his freekick was on target but had no power to defeat the goalkeeper. Yes, he did create a few chances, and dribbled past the defenders on some occasions as well, but his finishing was not clinical enough.

Ronaldo won the first penalty, and scored both times. His goals gave his team the opportunity to finish as group toppers and avoid tough opponents in the RO16, such as Bayern, Liverpool or City. He was well involved in the defensive play after the first 2 goals, dropping in the backline on multiple occasions.

Messi not being interested in playing for Barcelona is a myth. Yes, had a few problems with the board led by Bartomeu. However, now that the latter is gone as per his wish, he has no reason to show this lack of interest. The thing is that Barcelona are playing awful football nowadays, and Messi being out of form has a huge impact on the team's result.

Class is permanent and no disrespect to Buffon but why did Messi fail to get passed an old timer in his 40s, especially when you consider the skills which Messi has. Agree on Ronaldo having won the pentalties ultimately and making sure the team topped the group, wonder what folks make of both teams chances in the tournament from here on
