What's new

Is Cristiano Ronaldo the GOAT?

Class is permanent and no disrespect to Buffon but why did Messi fail to get passed an old timer in his 40s, especially when you consider the skills which Messi has. Agree on Ronaldo having won the pentalties ultimately and making sure the team topped the group, wonder what folks make of both teams chances in the tournament from here on

Buffon had a great game, but a man of Messi's class and level should have atleast managed to force one past him. As I said, he had the most shots on target, but most of his shots were straight passes where Buffon barely had to move.

Where the two teams will finish from here is unpredictable. Both are not good enough to beat the best teams in Europe across two legs, and Barcelona's journey might come to an end in the RO16 if they are to face City, Liverpool or Bayern. Juventus were beaten by Lyon last year, and Ronaldo has been a one man army in the knockout stages of the tournament since his arrival, so they will have to be less dependent on him.

Over the past few years, the pendulum has seemed to swing Ronaldo's way, especially concurrent with Barcelona's decline ever since Ronaldo joined Juve.

I fear that trend will continue, as Barca and Messi don't seem to be heading back to the top of European football. I don't think Ronaldo will win any UCL with Juventus, but he and they are not declining as much as Barca and Messi are.

For me, Messi will always be the greatest, but people have recency bias and if Ronaldo finishes the Messi-Ronaldo era stronger, that will have a big impact on the perceptions of either player.

Ronaldo misses penalty as Juve draw again

Cristiano Ronaldo had a penalty saved as Juventus drew for the sixth time in 12 Serie A games, this time against Atalanta.

Federico Chiesa put the champions ahead with a fine strike from outside the box, his first league goal for Juve.

Remo Freuler equalised for mid-table Atalanta with a fine 25-yard strike off the underside of the bar.

Ronaldo had a chance to win the game after Chiesa was fouled but Pierluigi Gollini guessed right to save his kick.

Former Aston Villa keeper Gollini had an excellent game and denied Alvaro Morata with a good save.

Juve - who have won the past nine titles - are unbeaten after 12 league games under Andrea Pirlo, although half of them have been draws.

Juventus and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo says he hopes to continue playing for "many years" and winning the World Cup remains a "dream" of his.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is the top goalscorer in Serie A this season - although defending champions Juve are sixth and 10 points adrift of top spot.

Ronaldo, 35, needs only seven international goals to equal the world record of 109 set by Iran's Ali Daei.

"It doesn't matter the age. What is important is the mind," Ronaldo said.

"It doesn't matter if Cristiano Ronaldo is good, you don't know tomorrow what is going to happen. I live in the present, in the moment.

"The moment is good, I feel happy, I feel sharp and in a good moment in my life. I hope to play many, many years more but you never know.

"This is football, we don't know what is going to happen tomorrow. When I speak to young boys I always say 'enjoy the moment' because we never know what will happen. My eyes see the future very, very bright, so I am happy with that."

Ronaldo's extraordinary career began at Sporting in Lisbon, where he made 31 appearances from 2002 to 2003 before moving to Manchester United, aged 18.

After six years and 292 appearances at United, he joined Real Madrid in 2009 and remained there until 2018 when he made the switch to Juventus.

Having won Euro 2016 with his country, Ronaldo said a "dream" triumph for Portugal "is possible" at the next World Cup in Qatar in 2022, by which time he will be 37.

He will chase several records at the postponed Euro 2020 this summer, although it is unclear yet whether supporters will be allowed back into stadiums to witness any potential achievements.

"I don't like to play in the stadiums without fans, it's like going to the circus but you don't see clowns," Ronaldo said.

"The pandemic has made people crazy. I hope soon they can open the gates of the stadiums. We have to live with that, we have to try to do a normal life but of course we have to respect the rules. But to play without the fans, I really don't like it."

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice during Juventus' Seria A clash against Udinese, which pushed his career goal tally to 758, past Pele who has 757 goals to his name

Cristiano Ronaldo investigated by Italian police for allegedly taking Covid-rule breaking trip to celebrate girlfriend's birthday

Cristiano Ronaldo will remain at Juventus until the end of his contract, according to vice-president Pavel Nedved.

He had been linked with a return to Real Madrid.

Ronaldo was signed to deliver European glory and he has failed on that front. Moreover, Juventus are on the brink of losing the league for the first time in 10 years.

Overall, Ronaldo has added nothing to the team and failed to take them to a higher level. It was a pointless signing in hindsight.

He needs to be moved on in the summer. He is not going to get younger and better.

Cristiano Ronaldo is in no danger of losing the Portugal captaincy over his outburst at the end of Saturday's World Cup Qualifier against Serbia, coach Fernando Santos has said.

Ronaldo stormed off the pitch seconds before the final whistle and got booked for dissent after he was denied a stoppage-time goal in Saturday's 2-2 draw.

The 36-year-old was left fuming when his effort was cleared by Serbia defender Stefan Mitrovic after it had crossed the line.

With no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) or goal-line technology in place, Dutch referee Danny Makkelie waved play on and a livid Ronaldo threw away the captain's armband as he headed towards the tunnel.

"Yes, he will keep the armband. Forever," said Santos. "Cristiano (Ronaldo) is a national example.

"If he had offended the manager, his team-mates or the federation in a thoughtless attitude, then we would have to address the situation. But nothing like that happened.

"It was a moment of huge frustration. And we are talking about a player who is unbeatable when it comes to his eagerness to win.

"Nobody will say now that his reaction was beautiful, but there's no point to discuss if Cristiano should remain the captain. That's something I want to be very clear about."

Ronaldo later took to Instagram to vent his frustrations, posting: "I always give and will give everything for my country, that will never change.

"But there are difficult times to deal with, especially when we feel that an entire nation is being harmed.

"We will keep our heads up and face the next challenge now."

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota's double had put the visitors in control at the break, but second-half goals from Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic and Filip Kostic saw Serbia - who had Nikola Milenkovic sent off in stoppage time - hit back.

UEFA has subsequently said Ronaldo's goal would have stood if both the governing bodies of Serbia and Portugal had agreed before the game to use goal-line technology

Cristiano Ronaldo's moment of frustration at a controversial decision in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday is turning into something positive.

The captain's armband the Portugal star threw to the ground when he was controversially denied a stoppage-time winner against Serbia has been sold at auction to raise money for a six-month-old baby's medical treatment.

Duty firefighter Djordje Vukicevic picked up the armband from the pitch after Ronaldo had stormed off at the end of the 2-2 draw in Belgrade.

"Ronaldo was agitated [and] he threw the armband. It fell right next to me," Vukicevic said.

He decided to put it up for auction to raise money for treatment for Gavrilo Djurdjevic from Serbia, who is suffering from spinal muscular atrophy.

"The entire crew agreed this [armband] will go for little Gavrilo," he said.

Vukicevic said he was ready to sell any memorabilia he could collect from players to help Gavrilo's parents collect the £2.1m needed for the treatment.

The winning bid for the armband was 64,000 euros (about £54,000). Gavrilo's mother Nevena said proceeds from the sale would be would be a significant contribution to their treatment fund.

"We could not believe that some people who do not even know us... would take the armband, auction it and help our child," she said.

The victory means Cristiano Ronaldo has now won every major trophy in England, Spain and Italy -- the first player in history to achieve that feat.

Manchester United are monitoring former forward Cristiano Ronaldo's situation at Juventus, as "agents connected" with the Portugal striker, 36 , say he "could genuinely leave" the Turin club.

Georgina Rodriguez, the partner of Cristiano Ronaldo, has revealed that the Juventus striker is staying in Turin.

There has been speculation about the future of the attacker after he reportedly moved his luxury cars back to Portugal.

The just-concluded campaign was a tough one for the Bianconeri as they toiled to earn a place in the Italian top four.

They won the Italian Cup and the Super Cup but struggled in the league and Champions League.

Ronaldo played his part well by scoring the goals that should be enough to earn them another Serie A title, but it wasn’t to be.

Being the best-paid player in the team doesn’t help if it is underperforming and the attacker was under serious scrutiny this season.

Several reports suggested that he would leave the club especially if they don’t qualify for the Champions League.

They made the top four, but there are uncertainties about his prolonged stay at the club still.

Georginia was filming a docuseries and a fan asked her if Ronaldo would leave or stay at Juve and her reply on Instagram was “He’s staying.”

It remains to be seen if this will be good or bad news for Juventus.

Records Cristiano Ronaldo could break at EURO 2020

Cristiano Ronaldo has devoted much of his career to rewriting the European football history books. Approaching his fifth EURO finals (a record, of course), he has his sights on a few more milestones.

Here is a collection of the EURO records he can break, the ones he can extend and those he will have to wait a few more years for.

- Most Euro tournaments
- Most Euro goals
- Most appearances (including qualifying)
- Most goals in a single game
- Oldest scorer in a final

EURO records Ronaldo already holds:

- Most Euro appearances: 21
- Most goals including qualifying: 40
- Most tournaments scored in: 4

Ronaldo is certainly one of the kings of international football

Greatest player in the last 10-12 years for sure and better than Messi who has only played at one club with lots of play makers in comparison.

2 more goals tonight for Portugal.

Breaks the record for the most goals by any player in the Euros.

What a legend.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s removal of two Coca-Cola bottles during a press conference at the Euros has coincided with a $4bn fall in the share price of the drinks giant.

The Portugal captain is a renowned health fanatic and made it clear what he thinks of the carbonated soft drink. The 36-year-old shifted the bottles of Coca-Cola away from him during a press conference in Budapest on Monday in the prelude to his country’s Group F game against Hungary.

Ronaldo followed it by holding up bottle of water before declaring in Portuguese: “Agua!”, appearing to encourage people to choose that instead.

Coca-Cola’s share price dropped from $56.10 to $55.22 almost immediately after Ronaldo’s gesture, a 1.6% dip. The market value of Coca-Cola went from $242bn to $238bn – a drop of $4bn.

Coca-Cola, one of the official sponsors of Euro 2020, replied on Tuesday with a statement that said “everyone is entitled to their drink preferences” with different “tastes and needs”.

A Euros spokesperson said: “Players are offered water, alongside Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, on arrival at our press conferences.”

Ronaldo is a pop culture colossus, boasting nearly 300 million Instagram followers.

On Tuesday, he scored twice in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Hungary – moving beyond France great Michel Platini as the record goalscorer at the European Championship finals with 11.

There are no signs Cristiano Ronaldo will leave Juventus, the club's football director said on Thursday, dismissing speculation that the forward could move this summer.

Is he really worth it?

Cristiano Ronaldo has topped Instagram's rich list as the celebrity thought to be able to charge more than anyone else for a sponsored post.

The Juventus forward can charge advertisers $1.6m (£1.2m) per post on his account, according to social media marketing firm Hopper HQ.

Former Real Madrid star Ronaldo knocked wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson off the top spot.

It is the first time Ronaldo has topped the list, which started in 2017.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner boasts 308 million Instagram followers.

Johnson, who stars in the box office juggernaut Fast and Furious film franchise, has 250 million followers and can command just over $1.52m (£1m) per post, while pop star Ariana Grande ($1.51m) places third on the list.

Lionel Messi, who this week became a free agent after his Barcelona contract expired, is the only other sportsperson on the list's top 10.

The Argentine, who has 224 million followers, can charge up to $1.1m (£798,011) per post, placing him seventh.

CR7
Incredible international record.
Successful at more than 1 club.
Better in the air, more two-footed than Messi and a better record in the CL.

-
However, for me Messi the superior player.
Better technically, better goalscorer, more assists.
Won the league more times than CR7 when both were in Primera.
Ronaldo's achievements perhaps superior but while watching both players, i think Messi is still clear.

Messi is still the best player in the world, Ronaldo hasn't been for some time.

Juventus expect Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at the club this summer despite reports in Spain linking him with a move back to Real Madrid.
The 36-year-old has 12 months remaining on his contract with the former Italian champions and has not mentioned to the club that he wants to leave.

Juventus have not received a single offer from Real Madrid or any other club.

Spanish TV show El Chiringuito de Jugones reported last night that Real Madrid wanted to re-sign Ronaldo, although Marca has since reported that "the door is closed" on a return.

Real sold Ronaldo to Juventus for a fee of just over £100m three years ago.

Cristiano Ronaldo is not looking for a move away from Juventus this summer, manager Massimiliano Allegri says.

Ronaldo, 36, wrote on social media this week that rumours of his departure were "a disrespect for me as a man and as a player".

In a pre-match interview, Allegri said the Portugal captain was staying.

"[Ronaldo] has never expressed a desire to leave," he said. "He has told me that he's staying, so we can clear that one up."

Juventus travel to Udinese in the opening game of their Serie A campaign on Sunday at 17:30 BST.

Ronaldo has been the subject of transfer speculation throughout the summer, with reports linking him with Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain and Manchester City.

However, on Tuesday, Real's new boss Carlo Ancelotti dismissed the idea of Ronaldo returning to the Spanish giants any time soon.

"Cristiano is a Real Madrid legend and he has all my love and respect. I have never considered signing him. We look forward," he wrote.

Ronaldo added in his Instagram post: "The frivolous way that my future is covered in the media is disrespectful to all the clubs involved in these rumours, as well as to their players and staff."

The former Manchester United forward moved to Juventus from Madrid in a deal worth 112m euros (£99.2m) in 2018.

In May, he became the fastest player to score 100 goals for the Italian side - a feat he achieved in 131 games.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has 10 months remaining on his contract at Allianz Stadium.

Cristiano Ronaldo asked not to start for Juventus against Udinese in Serie A on Sunday, according to Sky in Italy.
Ronaldo, who began the game on the bench, is out of contract next summer.

The 36-year-old Portuguese superstar has been linked with former club Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

Manchester City have been offered the chance to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus.

Ronaldo is out of contract next summer and Juventus want to sell him to save on the £500,000 a week wages they pay him plus tax.

Ronaldo is willing to leave and his agent Jorge Mendes has been looking for a club who are willing to pay a £25m transfer fee for the 36-year-old and take on his wages.

City are interested in bringing Ronaldo back to the Premier League on a free transfer and are willing to offer him a two-year contract, with a salary of £12.8m-per-season (€15m), according to Sky in Italy.

Juventus have told Cristiano Ronaldo they are willing to sell him this summer - but only on their terms.

Portugal forward Ronaldo, 36, still has a year left on his contract.

His future has been the subject of increasing scrutiny and he was left out of the starting line-up for the club's opening Serie A match with Udinese.

Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes has spoken to several major European clubs about potentially signing him, including Manchester City and Paris St-Germain.

City are considering whether to do a deal and no agreement has been reached.

It is understood Mendes was summoned to Juventus' training ground earlier on Thursday for a meeting with senior club figures, including vice-president Pavel Nedved, chief executive Maurizio Arrivabene and sporting director Federico Cherubini.

Mendes was told all situations remained possible for Ronaldo, but that Juventus would not sanction the departure of a player they signed for £99.2m three years ago if no transfer fee was involved.

Ronaldo is known to be frustrated at how his move to Juventus from Real Madrid has turned out.

Instead of competing for the Champions League, the Italian giants have not made it past the quarter-finals since Ronaldo's arrival and have been beaten in the last 16 for the past two seasons.

Last season, they lost their Serie A title - after winning it for nine years in a row - to Inter Milan and only scraped into the Champions League places in the last couple of games.

He wants to leave Juventus and that's the right decision. This team doesn't deserve a player of his stature.

I have closely followed Juventus since Ronaldo's arrival and their games are nothing but pure torture to the eyes. All they do is keep back passing looking for a lucky counter-attack, and as soon as they get a 1-0 lead, they park the bus for the remaining 90 minutes.

This kind of defensive mentality and boring style is not suitable for a player like Ronaldo who has played in attacking teams for the last 20 years.

I am happy that he is leaving this torture, but it will be akward to see him play for City, given the legendary status he enjoys at Old Trafford. But he has made the best decision for himself.

Cristiano Ronaldo, through his agent Jorge Mendes, has told Juventus he no longer wants to play for the club, according to Sky in Italy.

Sky in Italy are reporting City have been offered the chance to sign Ronaldo and are willing to offer him a two-year contract, with a salary of £12.8m-per-season (€15m). He is currently earning €31m per year after tax at the Allianz Stadium.

The Turin club are preparing themselves for an offer from Manchester City, who would prefer to sign him for free, but Juve want at least £25m for the Portugal captain.

A meeting between Mendes and the Juventus hierarchy, which took place in Turin on Thursday, concluded without an agreement over an exit from the club for his client.

Although it is understood Ronaldo has been keen to leave, this is believed to be the first time the 36-year-old has directly communicated his desire to depart.

Juventus, who want to sell Ronaldo before his contract expires next summer, have already started searching for a forward player as a replacement.

The Serie A club are in advanced talks to sign Moise Kean from Everton, who scored 17 goals in 41 games while on loan at Paris-Saint Germain last season.

Juve are also eager to sign City striker Gabriel Jesus but the Premier League champions are not willing to sell the Brazil international.

Ronaldo joined Juventus from Real Madrid in 2018 for a fee in the region of £105m and he has scored 101 goals in 134 games for the club, helping them to two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia crown and two Italian Super Cups.

He was benched by Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri for their first game of the season against Udinese and he also left training with an arm injury on Wednesday.

Sky Italy's Paolo Aghemo says Manchester City is Cristiano Ronaldo's 'only option' at the moment if he is to leave Juventus this summer
Manchester City have signed playmaker Jack Grealish for £100m from Aston Villa while an approach for Harry Kane of the same amount was rejected by Tottenham in June. The England captain announced he would be remaining at Spurs this summer after wanting a move away.

Pep Guardiola would be happy to continue the season without any more signings but City are still prepared to sign a forward after missing out on Kane.

Ronaldo played for City's rivals Manchester United from 2003 to 2009 and scored 118 goals in 292 games for the club.

Reports suggesting Manchester Utd have made an 11th hour bid for Ronaldo. Nothing concrete from City so far, will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Juventus's pre-match press conference ahead of their weekend clash with Empoli has begun, with manager Max Allegri saying that Cristiano Ronaldo told him on Thursday he has "no intention" to stay at the club.

"Yesterday, speaking with Cristiano, he told me that he has no intention to stay at Juventus and for this reason, he will not be called up tomorrow [against Empoli]," said Allegri.

"He didn't train this morning, so now we can talk about Empoli. I think that's the most important thing."

Didn’t they prefer Cavani over CR7 ? now a last minute bid because he might sign with City lol

Pep and Ole press conference sounds like he may prefer the red side, I’m sure fan pressure has pushed Utd into action, they seemed happy to see him go elsewhere as long as it wasn’t in England.

Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus.

BBC Sport understands a move to Manchester City will not happen for the 36-year-old.

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri confirmed Ronaldo had said he "no longer has any intention" of playing for the Italian giants.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Ronaldo "knows that we are here" during a press conference on Friday.

Ronaldo signed for Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon for £12.2m in 2003 and scored 118 goals in 292 appearances for the club.

During the press conference early on Friday, before news of United's approach broke, Solskjaer said he was surprised the five-time Ballon d'Or winner wanted to bring his time in Italy to a close.

He added that Ronaldo had been spoken to by United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, his Portugal team-mate.

"I didn't think Cristiano was going to turn out leaving Juventus," Solskjaer said. "It's been speculation this morning, speculation the last few days, of course.

"I know Bruno has been talking to him as well. He knows what we feel about him and if he was ever going to move away from Juventus, he knows that we're here."

Manchester City had looked to be one of the favourites to land the former Real Madrid player when some reports suggested personal terms had already been agreed between the two.

Speaking before City face Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday, manager Pep Guardiola said: "Cristiano is a Juventus player. I cannot add anything else.

"In these three or four days left until the transfer window shuts, anything can happen but, in my view, there are few players - Cristiano Ronaldo included, Messi is another - they decide where they are going to play.

"Right now, my feeling is I am more than delighted with the squad we have and we will stay the same."

On Wednesday, Juventus told Ronaldo they were willing to sell him during the transfer window - but only if their conditions were met by interested clubs.

"[Ronaldo] gave his contribution, he made himself available, now he leaves and life goes on," Allegri said on Friday.

"Things change, it's a law of life. Juventus remains, which is the most important thing.

"He is to be thanked for what he has done, also as an example among the youngsters. But as I said, we must go on."

According to reports, Ronaldo informed his Juventus colleagues he was set to leave this month after two years at the 36-time Serie A champions.

He then drove to the training ground on Friday morning but left before taking part in the session.

A week ago, Allegri said Ronaldo had "never expressed a desire to leave" Juventus, and that the player had told him he was staying at the Allianz Stadium.

Ronaldo himself called media speculation about his future "a disrespect for me as a man and as a player" in a lengthy Instagram post a few days earlier.

The best player of his era, Welcome ‘Home’ to the greatest league in the world.

Shocking development!

The fact of the matter is that Ronaldo wanted to join City but City didn't want him so United was his last resort. I personally think he should have moved to United when he left Real. Juve didn't do him any favours.

Yes he shouldve, but they never wanted him when he moved to juve, nor did he ever plan to go to City, he only used them to bait MU to come and get him, once MU entered the race, city dropped out, it was over.

I don't really care about us getting Haaland. I'll be happy if we got him but we got Mason Greenwood who I believe is a very special talent and has the potential to lead our line for the next 10-12 years. He isn't ready yet but in 3-4 years time, I believe he will be. In the meantime, Ronaldo can do the job for us.

Cristiano Ronaldo says he is "back where I belong" at Manchester United and has dedicated his return to the club to former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

United have paid an initial 15m euros (£12.85m) to sign the 36-year-old from Juventus, a decade after he left the club to join Real Madrid.

He has signed a two-year contract, with the option to extend for another year.

"Everyone who knows me, knows about my never-ending love for Manchester United," he wrote on Instagram.

"The years I spent in this club were absolutely amazing and the path we've made together is written in gold letters in the history of this great and amazing institution.

"I can't even start to explain my feelings right now, as I see my return to Old Trafford announced worldwide.

"It's like a dream come true, after all the times that I went back to play against Manchester United, and even as an opponent, to have always felt such love and respect from the supporters in the stands.

"This is absolutely 100% the stuff that dreams are made of!"

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo signed off: "I'm right here! I'm back where I belong! Let's make it happen once again! PS - Sir Alex, this one is for you…"

Ferguson was United manager during Ronaldo's first spell at Old Trafford, when he scored 118 goals in 292 appearances before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009.

He is believed to have spoken to Ferguson prior to his return to United, which could also cost the club a possible 8m euros (£6.85m) in add-ons.

Current Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "You run out of words to describe Cristiano. He is not only a marvellous player, but also a great human being.

"To have the desire and the ability to play at the top level for such a long period requires a very special person.

"I have no doubt that he will continue to impress us all and his experience will be so vital for the younger players in the squad.

"Ronaldo's return demonstrates the unique appeal of this club and I am absolutely delighted he is coming home to where it all started."

Ronaldo had been linked with Manchester City but opted to return to United, where he spent six years and won three Premier League titles, one Champions League, two League Cups and one FA Cup - as well as the Fifa Club World Cup and Community Shield.

Ronaldo could be available to Solskjaer for the home game against Newcastle United on 11 September, which is the club's first match following the international break.

Ronaldo wore the number seven shirt in his first stint at United but that is currently held by Edinson Cavani and, even if the Uruguay striker was willing to hand over the shirt number, Premier League rules prevent a mid-season swap except in the most extreme circumstances.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke the world record for goals scored in men's international football as he hit his 110th and 111th goals for Portugal in their dramatic 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over the Republic of Ireland.

The 36-year-old scored two late headers - to break and extend the record - after he had an earlier penalty saved by Gavin Bazunu.

Ali Daei, who scored 109 goals for Iran between 1993 and 2006, held the record which Ronaldo equalled with a double against France at Euro 2020.

The 36-year-old Manchester United forward has also equalled Sergio Ramos' European record for men's caps - with his 180th Portugal appearance.

The world record - only ratified by Fifa this summer - is the 195 Malaysia caps won by Soh Chin Ann between 1969 and 1984.

Ronaldo, who rejoined United from Juventus on deadline day, and Daei are the only two male players to score 90 or more international goals.

This is the latest landmark to push the argument for the 36-year-old to be considered an all-time great.

He is already the top scorer in club football's top tournament, the European Cup/Champions League, a trophy he has won five times.

The former Real Madrid forward is also the top scorer in European Championship history (14) and in Euros and World Cups combined (21).

Cristiano Ronaldo has been released early from the Portugal squad after picking up a suspension ahead of his Manchester United return.

Cristiano Ronaldo has replaced Lionel Messi as the highest-paid footballer in the world, according to latest rankings released by Forbes.

Ronaldo is set to make $125m (£91.63m) before taxes in the 2021-22 season after moving back to Manchester United with $70m (£51.31m) coming from his salary and bonuses at Old Trafford, according to Forbes.

The 36-year-old is set to earn an estimated $55m (£40.31m) from commercial deals, with only three athletes set to earn more from sponsorship; Roger Federer ($90m, £65.97m), LeBron James ($65m, £47.64m) and Tiger Woods ($60m, £43.98m).

Messi, who topped last year's rankings, falls to second despite sealing a lucrative move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Forbes claim the former Barcelona star will earn $110m (£80.63m) this season, with $75m (£50m) of that figure coming from his salary and bonuses at the Parc des Princes.

Meanwhile, Messi's club team-mates Neymar and Kylian Mbappe are third and fourth on the list respectively.

Neymar is set to earn $95m (£69.68m) in the 2021-22 season, while Mbappe is some way behind the Brazilian with expected earnings of $43m (£31.54m).

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is fifth in the rankings with expected earnings of $41m (£30.6m), while Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski is sixth with $35m (£25.66m).

Perhaps a surprise inclusion on the list is former Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta, who is ranked seventh with earnings of $35m (£25.66m) - the bulk of which comes from his salary and bonuses at Japanese club Vissel Kobe.

Eighth on the list is Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, who is set to make $34m (£24.92m), while Real Madrid's Gareth Bale is the highest-ranked British player in ninth with expected earnings of $32m (£23.46m).

Another Real Madrid player rounds off the top 10, former Chelsea winger Eden Hazard, who is set to earn $29m (£21.26m) in the 2021-22 campaign.

Ronaldo extends record in Portugal win over World Cup hosts Qatar

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 112th Portugal goal as they beat Qatar, extending his record as the top-scoring player in men's international football.

The Manchester United forward scored the opener from close range in the friendly at the Estadio Algarve and was replaced at half-time.

The 36-year-old broke Iran striker Ali Daei's record of 109 goals last month.

This was Ronaldo's 181st cap, meaning he has now also overtaken Sergio Ramos as Europe's most-capped male player.

Malaysian Soh Chin Ann, who retired in 1984, has the world record with 195.

Jose Fonte bundled in Portugal's second goal early in the second half on Saturday.

International debutant Rafael Leao, who replaced Ronaldo, hit the woodwork twice - and Andre Silva scored their third in the final minute.

Group A only has five teams, and whichever team is not in action plays a friendly against World Cup 2022 hosts Qatar.

Portugal were knocked off top spot in qualifying on Saturday as Serbia beat Luxembourg 1-0, with Dusan Vlahovic scoring the only goal.

Fernando Santos' side are one point behind the Serbs but have a game in hand.

A US judge has dismissed the Las Vegas rape lawsuit against Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo had paid a woman $375,000 in hush money after she claimed he raped her in Las Vegas in 2009.

The lawsuit sought a further payout, which might have run into millions of dollars, but US District Judge Jennifer Dorsey kicked the case out of court on Friday over the way documents were obtained.

The judge said in her 42-page order that dismissing a case outright with no option to file it again is a severe sanction, but that Ronaldo had been harmed by the conduct of the woman's lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall.

Judge Dorsey explained that Mr Stovall had used "misappropriated documents" which had been "woven into the very fabric" of the plaintiff's case, meaning it had to be permanently dismissed.

In a statement released in October 2018, Ronaldo said: "I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in."

His legal team has stated that the sexual encounter was consensual and that a confidentiality agreement prevents both his team and the woman from talking about it.

Ronaldo, Haaland lead as 2023 top goal scorers as Mbappe trails behind

Ronaldo and Haaland lead with 50 goals each, followed by Mbappe and Harry Kane's 49-goal tally. As an eventful football year comes to an end, Cristiano Ronaldo has once again proved his dominance and prowess on the field emerging as the leading goal scorer of 2023 and is joined by Manchester City's Erling Haaland who has equalled his 50-goal tally in the year so far, reported mirror.co.uk.

The feat reflects Ronaldo's continued dominance and effectiveness on the football pitch even at the age of 38 when most critics believed that the Portuguese star had lost his flare and prowess.

The Al Nassr striker's goal tally is equalled by Manchester City's Haaland who has had a remarkable year with the English club winning Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup titles along with Golden Boot and European Golden Shoe awards.

The 23-year-old scored 14 goals in the Premier League alone, with 30 others in all other competitions for Man City along with six for his national side.

Haaland and Ronaldo are trailed by England's Harry Kane and France's Kylian Mbappe, both of whom have scored 49 goals in the outgoing year so far.

With 230 club goals to his name at the age of 24, Mbappe has featured in two World Cup finals in his career — winning the 2018 tournament and ending up as runner-up in 2022 — and is on the path to joining Real Madrid next.

Meanwhile, Kane has also been on a goal-scoring streak since his move to Bayern Munich.

It's official! Cristiano Ronaldo to bid adieu to 2023 as 'top goal scorer'

Even at the age of 38, it seems that Cristiano Ronaldo knows no limit when it comes to reaching milestones on the football pitch as the star footballer is set to finish 2023 as the year's top goal scorer.

Manchester City's Erling Haaland was the only one who could've surpassed the Portuguese star, however, due to being ruled out for the English club's next match, it seems that Ronaldo is likely to remain unbeaten after netting 53 goals in the outgoing year — more than any other player.

Mbappe, Haaland and Kane have no more matches scheduled in the year while the Al Nassr star will play against Al Taawoun on December 30.

However, since Ronaldo is guaranteed to finish the year with the most goals, he is likely to rest for the upcoming match.

In his 21-year-long career, Ronaldo also won the Ballon d’Or, the highest individual award in football, five times and clinched the UEFA Champions League many times as well.

Cristiano Ronaldo overcomes injury to take on Real Madrid for Al Nassr

Cristiano Ronaldo has finally returned to the pitch to play for his team Al Nassr versus Al Hilal after suffering an injury that kept him out of a few friendly matches in China and will also reportedly be playing against his former team, Real Madrid.

This Thursday was Ronaldo's comeback on the football pitch. He played the entire ninety minutes of the game, demonstrating a full recovery. Al Nassr lost the match against Al Hilal 2-0 in spite of all of his efforts. In the Saudi Arabian league, his team is ranked second, trailing only Al Hilal, who has seven points more than them, according to Hola.

Several news sources have stated that Ronaldo and his team have been invited to the opening of the new Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, raising the possibility of a match between Real Madrid and Al Nassr.

According to Marca, the stadium has been undergoing renovations for a while, and a reopening is anticipated for early 2025.

Supporters eagerly anticipated a meeting between Inter Miami and Al Nassr earlier this month, which included longtime rivals Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's injury prevented him from playing during the game, which disappointed a lot of spectators and supporters.

With little effort on the part of Al Nassr, the squad defeated Inter Miami, winning 6 to 0. In the 83rd minute, Messi, who was also recuperating from an injury, entered the game.

Ronaldo pays tribute after death of former coach

Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute following the death on Tuesday of the coach who discovered him and several other elite Portuguese players.

Aurelio da Silva Pereira, who died aged 77, created Sporting Lisbon's recruitment and training department in 1988 and went on to be responsible for the development of some of Portugal's finest players.

The list of players he discovered and nurtured includes Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Nani and Ricardo Quaresma.

"One of the greatest symbols of world training has left us, but his legacy will live on forever," Ronaldo posted, external on social media.

"I will never stop being grateful for everything he did for me and for so many other players. Until forever, Mr. Aurelio, thank you for everything. Rest in peace."

Aurelio Pereira was partly responsible for Portugal's greatest football achievement, as the Euro 2016-winning squad featured 10 players he helped to discover. That team was nicknamed the 'Aurelios'.

In 2017, he received the Medal of Sporting Merit from the City of Lisbon and, in 2018, Uefa distinguished him with the Order of Merit for his contribution to the development of Portuguese and European football.

"The death of Aurelio Pereira represents an irreparable loss for Portuguese Football," the Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement.

"For history, in addition to the enormous legacy built by the man who discovered some of the best players in our history, there will be a kind person, of fine treatment and who always defended our talent."

Sporting - for whom Aurelio Pereira played and later coached after returning from Lisbon rivals Benfica - named their academy's main pitch after him.

"He was a master in his field and a person everyone agreed upon," Sporting said in a statement.

"He will forever be remembered as one of the greatest names in the history of national football and, above all, in the history of Sporting Clube de Portugal."

Nani wrote, external on social media: "Thank you for everything. You were a great friend, an excellent human being, who gave me good and important advice. I'll never forget everything I learned from you, my friend."

Cristiano Ronaldo has just scored a goal that takes him up to third place in football’s all-time top goalscorers list, surpassing a forgotten great of English football who represented Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Fulham.

The 40-year-old forward scored the 935th goal of his professional career in Al-Nassr’s 4-1 AFC Champions League thrashing of Yokohama FM, which takes him one beyond the official tally set by former Gunners striker Ronnie Rooke.

Ronaldo makes Forbes history with fifth time at No.1 as highest-paid player

Poland's star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has made history by topping Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid athletes for the fifth time and for the third consecutive year.

He earned a massive $275 million over the past year, thanks to his football salary and big-money deals off the pitch.
