Is Haris Rauf ready to represent Pakistan in Tests?

Can't wait to see him bowling with a reversing ball.

BOOOOOOM!!!!

6 wickets haul on a very flat pitch

That is some serious pace bowling. Thanks for the share.

Loving the passion when he gets those wickets. Could be a very handy bowler in test cricket. Good pace and just the kind of bowler who will get the ball reversing.

Absolutely incredible to see him dominate in FC and hopefully he keeps playing too. I know there is a T20 series coming up vs WI but I think they should rest both Shaheen & Hasan and let Rauf play in domestic FC. Selecting him for ODI series make sense but until then, let him play in FC.

A season of FC cricket was the only thing missing from his CV, now after a successful FC season ( if he performs well) why not.

Hasan and he can clear the tail i reckon
But still he has a long way to go to be able to.perform 5 consecutive days

A stint at Yorkshire will be very beneficial for him.If he can learn to seam and swing the ball then at his pace he will trouble batsmen.

Haris Rauf back in Tests for Pakistan - wise move?

if pak want to use him as a stock third seamer, then no, if pak want to use him as an impact 10 to 12 overs per day bowler then possibly.

would be interesting to see what strategy pak go with on different surfaces, im guessing hes most likely to play in pindi.

Rauf can be the 4th seamer in a 5 man attack in places like England, I wouldnt take a risk in such an important series against Australia at home.

A bowler needs a decent amount of FC games to have a solid bank of experience that he can rely on when under the pump in test match cricket.

Harris isn't used to bowling long spells against set batsmen. He has no back up plan when under pressure because he hasn't experienced the rigours of FC cricket.

We can't expect him to learn how to bowl long spells by throwing him in at the deep end in international cricket.

Haris is nowhere close to a test bowler. He is at best a limited overs bowler with his variations.

Thiers better test bowlers in Pakistan than Harris Rauf.He will proberly not play either test.

Haris doesn't seem like a Test bowler to me. He is more of a T20 specialist.

Pakistan can perhaps try him out against a mid-tier or a lower-tier opposition.

No idea what he has done in FC that makes him a good candidate for Tests?

If Haris Rauf gets the nod to make a fairytale Test debut against Australia in the coming weeks, the former tape-ball star will hold the unusual distinction of having once bowled in tandem with the opposition's entire pace attack.

It is a measure of the almost mythical nature of Rauf's uncommon express pace that those who facilitated and witnessed his incredible rise from second grade club cricket to the highest level recall his net sessions as vividly as they do his on-field feats.

And the combination of Rauf, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood bowling in the same net is the stuff of nightmares for even the most capable batters.

One Blues player who was at the SCG for that quartet's frightening union at a New South Wales training session at the start of the 2017-18 season recalls them "bowling rockets" at state players in the firing line.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">"When I played in Australia, I trained once in the nets alongside Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc and, I watched them closely and tried to learn from them and the skills they had, such as reverse-swinging the ball, were simply amazing" : Haris Rauf <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Ashes2019?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Ashes2019</a> <a href="https://t.co/NGNaCWvtWa">pic.twitter.com/NGNaCWvtWa</a></p>— PakPassion.net (@PakPassion) <a href="https://twitter.com/PakPassion/status/1171668546285395968?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">September 11, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

More than four years on and 11,000 kilometres away, those four could once again be unleashed on the same 22 yards should Rauf get the nod to make his Test debut against a country that has been integral to his astonishing rise.

Injuries ruling key men Hasan Ali and Faheem Ashraf out of Friday's Test series opener on a seam-friendly Rawalpindi surface could see Rauf handed his maiden cap in his birth city and join close friend Shaheen Shah Afridi in Pakistan's pace attack to face Australia.

Rauf would not have been in Sydney in late 2017 at all had he not made the four-and-a-half-hour drive to an open trial with Pakistan Super League side Lahore Qalandars where he was clocked at 148.5kph.

In the nets, of course.

The right-armer had never bowled with a leather ball, nor did he own a pair of bowling spikes, yet he was the one diamond uncovered among the hundreds of thousands of triallists in attendance at the Jinnah Stadium in Pakistan's north-east that was spotted and subsequently nurtured by the Qalandars.

"We weren't looking for ready-made players. We wanted players to show potential, and we will invest in them," Qalandars coach and former Test quick Aaqib Javed told media last year. "He had the pace, but he needed two years of proper training to become a proper bowler."

Brought out to Australia for a development tour that included games against the Sydney Sixers and Thunder, Rauf turned out for Western Suburbs, initially in their second XI, for sporadic appearances over two seasons before joining Hobart side Glenorchy for the 2019-20 summer.

By that point Javed had helped transform the lightly-built Rauf – who weighed only 71kg when he turned up for his trial – into one of the breakout talents of the 2019 PSL.

Yet even when the Melbourne Stars plucked him out of Tasmanian Premier Cricket as an eleventh-hour stand-in for boom recruit Dale Steyn, who also happened to be one of Rauf's idols, the speedster remained an unknown quantity.

"We were in desperate need of a fast bowler," Stars coach David Hussey told cricket.com.au. "The first time I actually laid eyes on him was when he came to the MCG nets.

"I said, 'Just go easy on the boys today, just get through whatever you need to today and we'll have a bigger session tomorrow'. He'd been on a plane (from Hobart that day).

"He stormed in. Nick Larkin was batting against him and he came out (from the nets) – and Nick is one of the most courageous batters going around – and he said, 'Mate, you've got a good one here'."

Rauf's success was breathtaking, snaring 20 wickets in 10 games including a hat-trick against the Sydney Thunder at the MCG, and propelled him into Pakistan's limited-overs teams.

His basic English had, at first, limited the tactical instructions the Stars brains trust could give him. With the help of Stars team manager Russell Radhakrishnan, who speaks Hindi, coaches and captain Glenn Maxwell learnt the Urdu words for 'yorker', 'slower ball' and 'bouncer'.

When he returned for his third stint at the club earlier this summer amid a major outbreak of COVID-19 in the Stars camp that sidelined the majority of their squad, Rauf underscored his reputation as a quick learner.

"Because we weren't allowed to celebrate with each other, I encouraged all the boys to come up with their own celebrations," Hussey said, who offered a prize for whoever came up with the most creative wicket celebration in their January match against the Perth Scorchers.

Unbeknownst to the coach or his teammates, Rauf placed a surgical mask in the pocket of his playing pants and put it on his face after dismissing Kurtis Patterson, a quirky (and COVID-safe) salute complete with him miming the application of hand-sanitiser.

Rauf is now a bona fide T20 star, helping the Qalandars to the PSL title on Sunday alongside captain and Shaheen, while that pair were also the pace lynchpins of a formidable Pakistan side that was defeated by Australia in the T20 World Cup semi-final in November.

But it remains to be seen whether Rauf can translate those skills to Test cricket.

The 28-year-old has played only four first-class games and just one in the past two years, though he did take nine wickets in that match for Central Punjab, bowling 33 overs across consecutive days.

If we are going the crazy route, I want Naseem to be in the attack as well.

Naseem, Shaheen, & Rauf should be the main three pace bowlers.

Its a terrible decision to include Rauf in test cricket. We need line length bowlers, Naseem is a much better option. Rauf will be all over the place.

Haris rauf has no control over line and length, i dont know how he got picked in the test squad.

It would be very exciting to see him play a test match, but I think he's not there yet.

Update: Haris Rauf has tested positive (Rapid Antigen Test). He has been isolated. Further details will be provided in due course.

Didn't the whole Lahore squad go see Aaqib in his hotel room with the trophy while he was isolating including Shaheen? Stupidity of the highest order...

Hope he gets healthy soon.

Pakistan have this long term flawed thought process that they will blow opposition away with their pace. They have paid the price for it since Sachin’s 98 in Centurion. That’s 2 decades.

First of all, fast bowling is not the same as quality fast bowling. Big difference. If you have pace but no movement, swing or seam, then you are just a plaything for pace lovers like Warner, Kohli etc.

Secondly, learning your craft over time is crucial to success. Throwing kids to slaughter without experience of different conditions, just because they have pace, is proven over and over again to be disastrous.

Finally, many pacers aren’t even that quick. Haris is quick but most others tried are 145 at best and 140 consistent - so there is no blowing away anyone.

Yes if you have an Akram or an Akhtar at your disposal, break the rules. Otherwise, we have seen an experienced Faheem at medium fast is preferable to an inexperienced, interested Naseem at fast medium.

Rauf needs more fc cricket

Naseem is going to come in most likely as he is there as reserve with the team.

Issue with guys who are part of the national team even in whiteball cricket is that they are never going to play a lot of FC matches as they are mostly travelling with the team. So you either have to wait before selecting a bowler one thinks has a future in red ball cricket or once selected in any format you have to play the guy in a format the guy has potential or has created an impact in limited season matches he gets to play. No other way around it I guess.

Don’t think Rauf will be bowling regular spells of 145-150

I would rather take Naseem Shah who is very confident as a bowler these days

Poor Harris... its like The Mountain vs NoBody

Haris today joined the squad

2QmQkWC.png

It's such a shame that he isn't playing this test. We need to find out pretty quickly if he is worth the investment in tests. He has an excellent seam but on the other hand he isnt the sharpest knife in the draw.

If Fahim and Hassan are fit then they should play ahead of Raud definitely

Rauf has to play if he is fit. He has the seam to move the ball at pace , the question to be answered is whether he has the grey matter. I would advise him to attack the off stump by bowling full and although it will mean leaked boundaries, it will also mean wicket take opportunities

We should go with Haris. To increase the pace of this series we should go in with our new guns.

If Faheem is fit he should play, one of Sajid or Naumaan are enough. Obviously we hope Karachi pitch will offer something, especially after this one is deemed below average.

If Haris Rauf returns anything other than 1-126 or similar i will be absolutely shocked.

At best he is a 40+ averaging bowler in tests. In his first ever test against Australia on these wickets? It could be a massacre.

The fact that someone as inexperienced and inconsistent as Rauf is even being considered for a test call up should send great big alarm bells to whoever is responsible for our domestic system.

On current display in the County season, red-ball cricket is not suited for him

Could be his chance in the 2nd Test as Shaheen injured?

Should not be in the final xi for the first test.

Only concern is workload. Haris rauf is strongly built and is our strongest player physically. Still workload needs to be managed.

I think he should focus only on 2 formats. For now loi is fine.

He can maybe play alternate test matches. Management needs to be careful and NOT OVERBOWL HIM
DO NO RUN HIM TO THE GROUND.

Why not play another spinner? I mean its Galle. Even Australia didn't go with three frontline seamers. And their pace attack is far better than ours.

Also doesn't make alot of sense to play Haris and Naseem considering they are similar kind of bowlers. Faheem Ashraf would be a better pick.

Not better than ours in Asian conditions. Only Cummins is good in Asia.

Well Asian conditions and Sri Lanka are two different things. Starc and Hazlewood might not have great records in Asia, but Starc has an excellent record in Sri Lanka and Hazlewood doesn't have bad numbers there either. Compare that with the Pakistan attack, which for all its merits is seriously inexperienced. And although Naseem has the capability to put up some brilliant performances, he is very much a work in progress who does oftentimes upset the balance of the bowling attack.

Yeah agree. If he is to play test cricket I would want him to show a bit more in FC cricket before he is selected for Pakistan. Simply selecting him because he has 'pace' is stupid and nonsensical. And something you would only see happen in a country like Pakistan. If you lack control with the ball (which he does) you can never be truly successful in test cricket. We saw even in county that batters had a go at him. If he is turning up an ER of 4, 4.5 in a test match, he is doing more damage to the side than any kind of benefit...even if he picks up a few wickets.

Right now, he should focus on ODIs and T20s. The next 12 months are highly important with two World Cups coming up. And Pakistan need him at his best if we are to have any kind of a chance in these tournaments.

Exactly about time we have a structure in place. Choose players based on specific formats they are likely to excel In.

Agreed about the pace part. Only we go off pace. We need to think about lengths and bounce plus accuracy etc.

Remember haris just started playing a few years ago. He was a net bowler and played grade cricket in Australia a few years ago. He has risen through the ranks quite rapidly. Let him focus on LOI for now. Fast bowlers need to be managed well.

He has not played a test match yet and only plays t20s and ODIs so workload shouldn't be an issue as of today however I still say he shouldn't play ahead of Dahani or Naseem.

Naseem and Fahim are not similar bowlers or ask to perform similar roles.i would play naseem and Fahim as the latter can offer batting ability and bowl some overs for control.

I said Naseem and Haris, not Naseem and Faheem.

Haris Rauf for test cricket?

I think he is at his bowling peak and now has the skills and discipline to do well in the longer format. I would be happy if we can use him well for two three years in test cricket.

Thoughts?

I think he is a very good hit the deck bowler and bowls at pretty good pace. He will definitely generate that bounce which will be lethal in venues like Australia.

Haris Rauf has 31 wickets from 8 FC games (bowling average of around 28). Not bad.

Should be given a go in Test probably.

I hope not. Test cricket is DEAD.

Let him rest and keep him fit for the WC in India.

It’s like driving a Ferrari in the country side on those farm roads full of potholes.

Do Pakistani fans value test cricket these days ?

Test Cricket is dying. It will remained confined to 5 nations - Ind, Eng, Aus, SA and Pak.

The rest simply don't have a fanbase for the longer format.

He will for sure play at home against England.

We must ensure though that we play 5 proper bowlers in the test XI so that his workload is managed.

Will make it to the Test side for the lack of better options, but I don't see him and Naseem in particular as Test match bowlers.

He would be a decent option, but they need to manage his workload. He is a bowler who works best when he bowls in short sharp bursts, so test cricket would take a lot out of him.
Personally I would leave him to LOI for now, especially with Shaheen's injury problems. In tests I don't see Pakistan competing on a regular basis regardless of Haris Rauf firing.

He can be used but smartly by the captain. Bowl him in short burst of 4-5 overs then let him take rest outside the ground, then again in next session.
Will love to see him with a 60 overs old ball which is reversing. Can bowl some game changing spells.

With Shaheen out, give him his debut. He has learned and improved so much in the last two years. He is hitting great lengths and getting the ball to move away. With his pace, he will be lethal with reverse swing as well.

There is absolutely no point playing 130 kph bowlers in Pakistan.

I think there is nothing to gain from a 29 year old who is better suited to just limited overs cricket

We could ruin one of our potential match winners in ODI/ T20i cricket by wearing him down through Test cricket

Multiform pace bowlers are struggling in T20 cricket because of the workload and the varying demands of the formats.

Rabada, Starc, Cummins have all been poor in this World Cup. PAK should not sacrifice a strength to plug a weakness.

We missed the chance. 2024 we have no hope. Time to focus on Tests and ODIs

We need to take test cricket seriously. If we get 4 wins in 4 tests Vs eng and NZ , we can get to the test championship final. It's worth playing him in these 4 games

We missed the chance. 2024 we have no hope. Time to focus on Tests and ODIs

Pakistan's batting struggled at every venue except Sydney. The bounce on offer was the main reason for the struggle.

The Caribbean pitches will suit your batsmen and your finger spinners also. PAK will be a bigger threat over there.

Should be picked for tests vs Eng and NZ. our strength is in pace bowling in comparison to spin in tests.

Don't think he has the legs for red ball cricket should be kept only for Jamodis and pyjama cups

Will be lucky to win 1. Our Test team is a joke.

Not really, the batting in home conditions is solid enough.
England's test team is an actual joke and NZ are heavily reliant on Kane. Their bowling isn't upto much.
So let's give it our best and stop doing a mamoon

After his wonderful performance in T20 Wc, I think we should preserve Rauf for WBC only. Playing in all formats will shorten his longevity. He is approaching 30 , not a perfect age to start test career.

Let younger ones, Naseem, Shaheen and Husnain play the longer version and sharpen their skill further.

Rauf will not last long if he starts playing all three formats.
