Indian middle order problem in ODIs is often discussed. We dont have a settled no 4 and 5 also need a replacement of Dhoni.

One factor often overlooked is a part time bowling.During 2000-2008, we had Sachin, Saurav, Yuvraj, Sehwag even Raina. These guys could have been rotated according to pitch conditions. These part timers have 500+ wickets amongst them and did a decent job on economy front. They used to bowl 16-18 overs together on avg. in ODi per game. That allows you to play with 4 regular bowlers.
Why dont teams have many part timers now?

India used to have gun batsmen who could be more than useful with ball. Decent bowlers who could be more than useful with bat. Nowadays bowlers suck at batting. Batsmen suck at bowling. This is why show pony like Pandya are still in the reckoning.

Yes, you always need to have a sixth bowling option in ODIs because Pandya will more often be taken apart or if one main bowler struggles, you need someone to make up for it.

Hence, also why Pant doesn't make it to XI. He won't be preferred over MS due to biasedness. And while I feel he walks into team as batsmen alone, India need someone who can bowl a bit in that position as well. So, they are going with Rayudu or Jadhav.
