Is SuryaKumar Yadav the most overrated/overhyped player ever?

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma feels most teams, including his own, are taking risks in the ongoing IPL and it is paying them rich dividends. Chasing a stiff 200-run target set by Royal Challengers Bangalore, MI on Tuesday romped home in 16.3 overs. "We restricted them to less than 200. Was a great effort, It could have been 220 or more. I have no idea what a safe score is. The last four games we have seen excess of 200 has been scored. Most of the teams are taking risks and it is coming off.

"The batters are taking risks and 200 plus scores are being chased. The mindset of the batters is to do something special for the team and it is coming off as well," said Rohit at the post-match presentation.

Rohit praised the star performers his team including Uttarakhand pacer Akash Madhwal "It is a good pitch. If you apply yourselves, you can get runs. Those four guys played well. Akash (Madhwal) was with us last year as well. We saw the skill set. We wanted to give him a role. He is quite confident. He leads his Uttarakhand team. He knows what field he needs."

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis felt they were 20 runs short.

"I think at least 20, the context of the wickets so far this season, anything under 220 with MI's batting line-up. They are a strong side, they bat deep. We didn't capitalise on the last five overs (of our innings), so very disappointed," he said.

Du Plessis was in awe of Suryakumar Yadav's 35-ball 83-run knock for MI.

"(SKY) He's one of the best, when he gets going he's really difficult to bowl to. So many options you can't shut him down. (Siraj) He's been fantastic, the nature of T20 cricket is bowlers will be under pressure. That is the nature of the beast, long batting line-ups and guys are going to come out and play positively," he said.

Let's hope we don't kill future Suryas by making them to wait to play in this format for long and request the services of Dinesh Karthik & co time and again!

If he is the most overrated player, then who is the right player according to op?

Maiden IPL 100 for SKY

Here is his fifty shot

It's an absolute joke to compare orthodox 125 strike rate batsman like Mohammad Rizwan to such an high impact high strike rate batsman like Surya Kumar Yadav.

T20 genius. Hope they don't extrapolate his T20 skills and expect him to do the same in ODI. He might do in a match or two. Couple of cameos. But he is not going to be consistent there

There are cricketers in 2023 that are purely T20 specialists, not white-ball specialists. SKY is one

High time T20 is played only by specialists! This way actually more teams/nations can get into cricket choosing this format...

Against England , in wc finals , this is the guy u want . Now he is got his odi game going

Plays in the v first 5 -10 balls and then goes 360 .

Little OT but Kapil's knock among the list was special. 72(38) , against an attack of Marshall , Roberts and Holding was top notch. It marked first Indian ODI win vs WI.
SKY can be genuine match winner on dead tracks. He needed to improve on tracks which gives help to bowlers especially in ODI.

SKY again proved his critics wrong by scoring 49 runs in 47 balls… scoring with strike rate of 102 on difficult pitch and wicket falling on other side. Remember SKY is not lucky as KL Rahul as later got ample opportunities to fix his place in Indian team

Most Overrated and overhyped ever is going way way way way too far.

I can think of 50 players who were way more overhyped and overrated then him lol

SKY in Odi is not just working for India. His techniques suits t20 style. He may be called a finisher and good for last few overs to bat in ODI.

In response to the OP’s question. He still isn’t the most overrated/overhyped player in world cricket

The answer to the question is a player you all know very well.

End of his ODI career for sure. Am sure Aksar Patel could have done better he almost won a chase for Ind against BD in Asia Cup. Whereas SKY is just made for T20s, hasnt done anything of note in ODI’s. his IPL heroics wont be able to transferred to ODI’s like he did to T20I, different international ball game.

T20 Specialist. Doesn't have the technique or temparament in ODI Cricket. He's received enough chances in the format

You are right, its sarfaraz. Hai na?🤣

Like come on. The amount of Hype we saw about SKY this and SKY that, surely you would expect him to do fireworks here. He was at the middle or more than 10 overs, because i remember he was there for about an hour. And yet the guy who is like there power hitter and so called best batter batted with a strike rate of 64.

He was extremely over rated by Indian fans and now i hope the will come back to reality with this guy.

I remember how Indian fans were going gaga over Varun Chakravarthy, again based on IPL performance.

He is good for T20.

I don't think he is good in ODI where you need to adapt your game according to situation. Team had no confidence to send him ahead of Jadeja to bat overs. Left and right combination is not good enough reason.

God send for India in T20Is. To average close to 50 with a strike rate in excess of 170 are unreal numbers.

In ODIs however, he shouldn't be playing ahead of Pandya.

But I would still take SKY over Ifti any day of the week even in ODIs. The reason I bring up chacha is because according to OP, he's better than SKY.

Australia executed their plans perfectly against all batters

Why is SKY being singled out?

He would be righly hyped in T20Is, but hasn’t done anything of note yet in ODIs. So no, he’s not the most hyped player ever, he’s suited to a different format than was played in this World Cup.

T20 cricket is played in 20 overs.

Surya came in when there were 15 overs remaining today.

The dynamics dont really change.

Its not like a test vs Limited overs comparison

The Indians made the same mistake Pakistan made when they selected an entire ODI based on T20 performances.

SKY, Rauf, Shadab, Nawaz, Ifty, Usama Mir are all T20 players not suited for ODI or tests.

Nah, I doubt he comes in to bat when 15 overs are left in T-20. If he comes in that situation he needs to bat differently and he does not have skills to bat differently.

So the last day of a Test match becomes an ODI? Do you think before you write? They are just different formats.
last day of a test has 90 overs.

Surya was there for 15 overs. Now if you are going to say that Surya can only bat if 5 overs are left, than i cant argue further.

Thing is, you can change the name of the format, but the number of overs left and the kind of cricket (white ball cricket) that was being played cannot be changed.

still he stayed out there for 1 hour. He bottled. He was trying to hit everything at the back and failed massively.

Dynamics don’t really change?

The balls were 16-17 overs old each from both ends on a very dry wicket.

There was hardly any pace on offer in the wicket and the Aussies were not offering any pace either to him. Cricket isn’t the same on each and every occasion. It’s a very complicated game. Sky had a bad game but he is still levels above every Pakistani batsman

How do you explain his superhuman efforts in T20s compared to ODIs then? He always comes in the last 15 overs only in ODIs but has done exceptionally well - better than any other batsman in the world- in T20s. There’s more to it than just the number of overs remaining.

which is why he ended up batting at a strike rate of 65?

16 over old ball? Now that is an issue?

A proper old ball is about 30 overs+

a purple patch. He is decent batter, but Indians over rated him as if he was the next best thing.

Point is, if he was, the stage was set for him to win the game for India. He had 15 overs in todays final. Should had done something instead of bat at a strike rate of 65+ and play a test match.

Its funny, how we will be having T20 cricket legends now.

So what did you expect him to do? Blast every ball for 6 because it’s reversing and the Australians are not giving him any pace to work with?? Did you watch the game or just followed it on cricinfo?

I don't really watch T20, but I think he does not really play hanging out game in T-20. If I am right he comes late and simply hits.

Here he had to hit without taking risk and I have not seen him doing it whenever I have seen him bat. He takes plenty of risk.T20 and ODI are not comparable and I am not sure why Indians played him in ODI. Yes, he stayed till the end but he was trying to not take risk and he does not have game for it.

Anyway, don't take my observation that seriously, I have seen very little of him and that too in ODI format.

I just answered your question about “most overhyped player ever”. Purple patch or not his overall T20I stats speak for themselves. Nobody hyped him in ODIs, and he has justified his hype in T20s. Stop creating exaggerated, over the top threads and level up.

Thing is, he had a purple patch and everyone went gaga. Against good quality attack bowling of Pakistan, he stood exposed.

That is what Cummins did, the guy couldn't even connect a single ball. A batting strike rate of 65 .

He was getting 2 slow bouncers per over, but he is a very limited player that exposed himself tonight.

Anyways, he will score some runs in the next series and the hype will be back on i guess

I wish if you had applied same logic to other players and not just your favourites.

I guess Gill is a very limited player who was exposed today as well?

He is a little overrated sure, T20 is more his game atm. Still needs to adapt to ODIs.
I still wouldn't write him off completely though. Okay he may be 33 now but still has a few years left, let's see if he can bring more of his hitting power to 50 over cricket.

If Rinku Singh comes in and performs, than Surya's days are numbered.

What's funny is OP is dissing SKY's strike rate today.

He should be the last person to be dissing someone's strike rate and their inability to "connect".

He ought to be reminded in the 2011 World Cup Semi-Final, there was a certain Pakistani player who played out 42 dot balls, which was the most among Pakistan's batsmen. In his first 42 balls, he scored only 17 and played 27 dots. During this period, Pakistan's asking rate went up from 6.07 to 8.45.

Oh the irony.

Proved to be the selection that cost India's batting in the end

Rest had bilateral ODI numbers when this guy didn't even have List A numbers

Gamble that failed brutally .
It was a major gamble and it indeed failed badly. Age is not on his side. He should stick to T20’s only from now on. India can try someone like Rinku or Tilak Varma.

I can understand why Indian selectors was were adamant about his selection. He is a frickin x-factor. But not every tree you invest in bears fruits.

I feel we should take a balanced perspective.

SKY’s reputation is built on making spectacular 20:20 runs on mostly hard pitches conducive to 20:20 batting, in short but very effective bursts.

The pitch in yesterday’s WC final was totally the opposite of what he was used to. Moreover, none of the other Indian batsmen were able to force the pace either and they had lots of time. SKY had to take off from the word go.

In the context of others’ performances he didn’t do badly with 18/28. Iyer and Gill failed. Rahul’s strike rates were pretty average. Moreover, SKY never got a decent opportunity during the tournament to get some match practice.

However the fact is that the opportunity was there, India’s need was great, but he was unable to
play that explosive innings expected of him. He was there to do a job and he could not.

This will set him back immensely and he may not play an ODI for a while, if ever. But I don’t think he’s done yet in T20s at least.

Australia turned things around when we stopped getting seduced be these sort of players (eg Stoinis) and picked a balanced team to win matches.

All flash, all hype no substance and his innings was genuinely cowardly in how he failed to protect the tail from the strike.

His game is not situated at all when the ball is old, he is a touch player who does well in T20 cricket when the ball is hard and new. You need full extension of the arms players that can strike belligerently like Maxwell, Stokes and Miller.

How could Rohit pick him at 6 for that role in ODIs?

Failed in the match that matter, now the fans are coming out of the cave to celebrate a meaningless t20 innings

You have to admit though he's better than any Pakistani player in T20Is. His record is exceptional in the shortest format.

Baba was failed in both world cup so far in his career .so babar all the nom 1 ranking stats was are useless , isn't it?
Failed in the match that matter, now the fans are coming out of the cave to celebrate a meaningless t20 innings

And THAT @Major is your answer. He’s a gun T20 batter, regardless of how he does in any other format no matter how many overs are left. Now go sulk again trying to put down a gun player in a format he owns.

He has played many single innings that I do not expect ANYONE in the Pakistan team to play in their lifetime
