Is the 2019 Cricket World Cup the worst World Cup ever?

Ever since the world cup was introduced for LOI cricket it has been the the global brand associated with this game.
Everyone who watches cricket even casually remembers who won the world cup in which year.

After 4 years of waiting fans get to watch their favourite players try to take their team to the glory of being called world champions.

To win the world cup a team has to play fierce cricket and give their best against the very best from around the world.

Yet, this time the CWC seems to be somewhat different. It's been organised in UK during the monsoon season. Crucial matches are being washed out and the weather forecast seems to be indicating more matches which will be washed out.
The world cup is now not about who plays the best cricket throughout it is slowly becoming more dependant on luck and winning a one off match to reach knockouts.

However bad the 2007 WC was because of time zone difference for sub continent and India/Pakistan crashing out early along with the lack of 70000+ crowd matches and a bad format it was still not as bad as this world cup is turning out to be.

How did ICC and ECB not have the foresight about the poor weather in June/July in England? Why did they not shift the CWC 1 month later?

This has been a disaster so far and if the trend continues will go on to be remembered as the worst CWC of all time irrespective of who wins. The format was suppose to ensure the best 4 teams reach the knockouts however it is turning into a total farce and luck based event.

Quality is also missing. e.g SA and SL line up is really poor. With Afghanistan and BD still not good enough to make semis. That leaves 6 teams and Pakistan's matches are getting washed out so they might not have a good chance to make final 4 due to weather. All these things might add to a dull world cup.
 
Following American sports for an year or two and lol cricket looks so lame comparatively , at best comparable to Baseball which itself is terrible.

I dont blame ABCDs hating cricket , most of them are into basketball which makes so much sense.. eventhough theh ll probably not make it
 
This is an absolute joke from ICC, they had years to think and organize this tournament and this is just shambles. Poor advertisement for the game.
 
UK does not have monsoon!!
It is summer in UK which can have occasional rains - that is the general behaviour.
This world cup though seems a bit different wherein frequency of rains has increased.
I agree with the intent of OP though - rains, sticky bails, poor umpiring, one sided contests (barring a few) are not doing good adverts for cricket.
 
Dodgy umpiring, teams not even attempting to chase targets,no stand out players rain ruining matches left right centre. Should be the last wrld cup.
 
Valid questions raised. The problem was ECB was trying to have to too much on their plate with WC as well as Ashes.

Same thing can be said about American sports by a cricket fan. They all feel lame compared to cricket.
Basketball is just ridiculous if you ask me.
 
The first week had some outstanding cricket and close contests. Eng-Pak, Aus-WI, Afg-SL and BD-NZL were superb games.

I don't how anyone can say its been worse than 2015 which was an appalling World Cup full of one sided runfests and barely a handful of close contests.

Yes the rain is massively frustrating and the venue allocations puzzling but what we HAVE seen when rain hasn't intervened has been far more entertaining than 2007 and 2015.

Bangladesh has produced two of the most exciting matches in this tournament and still can qualify for the semis , please take your bias elsewhere
 
Mate, it’s summer here !!
But June can be notoriously unpredictable — you can have days when it’s 25 C and days when it is 13 C and pouring with rain (like today).
The tournament should have been scheduled in July when the weather is most predictable and the days long enough to get games in.
It it rather seems the English obsession with the Ashes meant that was prioritised (or the ICC have made one awful mistake)
More rain predicted for this week.....
 
Summers or monsoons whatever it is people living in UK will know better however point was ICC and ECB should know that this time of the year rains will be common in UK. The fact they did not postpone it by 1 month and now seeing the weather prediction for upcoming week, if it stays this way ICC it will become a WC if luck..

I hope you realise there is are "monsoons" here in the UK. There's no better weather than what we get in June-July in the UK, any other month is just as likely to have rain if not more. I'm not sure you understand. It's an unpredictable climate.
 
Rain is the only winner here I am sure this could have been organized better with reserve days and better grounds to host the matches.
 
Teams prepared & fans waited for 4 years & we all ended up waiting for cricket action at small tiny micro sized stadiums drowning in water. England is the worst place for cricket. They can't even build a single decent size cricket stadium in centuries. Even Pakistan stadiums are far better than these. ICC should not accept any bid from ECB in future to hold any major event until they find a solution to rain problem & improve stadium'capacities.

The rains are common any time of the year Historically july / aug may be slightly drier but theres no guarantee with the uk weather when it may rain or not Like some poster said you can have a few days of dry 25c followed by rain and 11c It really is unpredictable and a lottery

The 99 world cup was in may \ june and from memory went fine westher wise Its just one of those things

What would that be - a weather machine ?

As for decent sized stadiums - Lord's, The Oval, Old Trafford, Edgbaston and Headingley are big enough and have hosted many major events successfully like the 1999 World Cup.

Not every stadium needs be a concrete jungle like most in SC.
 
There are some serious problems with this WC.

1. The ticketing process/costs.
2. International ticket purchases should've been capped.
3. Ticket allocations.
4. No contingency for the weather.
5. Stadium sizes.
6. Stadium selection for matches. 8000 capacity grounds are a joke for a WC match.
7. Commentary team selection on SKY.
8. The general broadcasting pattern on SKY.
9. The balance between bat and ball.
10. Too many one sided matches.
11. Gut wrenching radio broadcast on BBC 5 Live EXTRA!

Not sure about the worst, but CWC19 could be a contender based on the tournament thus far!

Reserved days, use of floodlights, alternate venues, indoor stadiums etc there are many solutions don't need a machine, a willing authority & a little financial sacrifice would solve the problem.
I fully agree not every stadium should be concrete jungle, but a big3 cricket board should atleast have one or two 50,000+ capacity stadiums & rest of them should be 20,000+. Its not like that its not in their culture, look at football stadiums across UK.
 
We have had a few good games so not completely horrible, but the weather has ruined some excitement considering the amount of games that will be washed out this week alone.

I fully agree on reserve days. It's foolish to take risks given unpredictable UK weather.

They did think about using the Olympic Stadium which I think is 60k but logistically they couldn't convert it into a cricket venue.
 
For me, yes, it is. It is so so annoying when a game is washed out. Why did they put it in England in the first place where rain is so frequent in the first place ? It's not fair when a number of games are/will be washed out. There should have been an alternate venue/reserve day for the matches where there's definite forecast of rain.

ECB should build its own iconic stadium (wembley like) in birmingham or manchester, i believe cricket is most popular in those regions. Look at BCCI & CA, they are building/renovating stadiums every year.
 
How on earth is this the worst WC based on the quality of action so far ? we've had some pretty close games already. The weather is a disappointment right now in this moment but it's not something we can control, last year we had a very lengthy heat wave !
 
Points for abandoned matches should be awarded wrt last 10 matches between the involved teams.
70-30 in favour of Team A = 2 points for Team A
60-40/50-50 = Both teams share 1 point apiece.

Also this will add more value to bilateral ODIs.

But again, not every WC is in England in June.
 
This is what happens when cash-laden leagues be more important for ICC than world-events. Its only to sustain ICC's claim over game. You could almost see Australians and few other players not even trying to win. They just wanted to go through the motions.

But still, its not worse than 2007 one. Everyone around me just wanted that WC to end asap.
 
Have people forgotten about the dreadful 2007 tournament already? 2015 was pretty dull as well.

This one has been good so far. Rained off games are an irritant no doubt, but interruptions due to wet weather and poor light are part & parcel of the game all over the world, not just in England.
 
2007 was pathetic, yes. If we manage to get the rest of the league games in this could be one of the most closely fought WC tournaments ever. Apart from Afghanistan, all other teams can still make the semis.

I am going of weather predictions about lot of matches being rained out .

If it happens then this will go down as worst ever WC.
 
Definitely it is going to be one of the worst. I didn't like 2007. But this is going to be on par with that. We have already had enough rain interruptions. Two completely washed out.One partially interrupted. Few warm ups were also washed out. Expected more like this. This is not fair.

This so called cwc should be renamed as International Premier League & the final must be held in the sun-baked mumbai.

No matter which nation manages to reach the final, ICC must ensure CSK or Mumbai lifts the trophy to please 1.3 billion viewers of STAR Network (as per script) & the disciples of mr. balidaan jaggu jadeja, suresh reina should see dhenier off to a masterfully-choreographed sunset.

Yes with all the rain effected matches we are gonna get it is becoming that way. Those who don't make it to the semi's will have every reason to complain.

I work on weekdays so miss most of the action during the week games so it is only fair that no one else gets to see the games as well :asad1
 
It is summer here in the UK, this year it has rained way more than usual for June. However it looks like the ECB has prioritized the Ashes instead of the WC as early July-Aug is generally drier. Ashes should either have been delayed or cancelled this year.
 
The affected matches this week
Bangladesh sri lanka tommorow
Pak v aus wed
Ind v NZ Thursday

All will be washed out
 
Well,just like Pakistan is barred from hosting international cricket due to fears of terrorism,England should be barred from holding tournaments due to unpredictability of weather.
 
The quality of the tournament has been really good. Such thread are only being made due to the rain which is out of the organisers hands.

Game after game being washed out.
Terrible pitches.
Useless ball, not to mention gigantic bats and small boundaries.
Bails that dont dislodge even when the ball strikes them.
Yes i know we are barely into the second week of this world cup, but honestly, i have lost most of my enthusiasm for this world cup!
My question is , by the time this world cup finishes, do you think it will be the worst world cup ever, judging by the first 12 days?
 
It’s already better than the 2015 World Cup tbh apart from the NZ vs SA semi
 
It started really well but the rain is spoiling things ... I hope we don't see any more washouts.
 
Should have been hosted in July-August. It rains a bit too much in June.

But the variety of pitches has been a plus.
 
The funny thing is that this WC was supposed to eliminate any doubt who the best team is because everyone plays everyone in the group stage. However, with so many matches being called off, i think the debate will continue.

I know alot of indian and pak fans disliked that wc because they both got knocked out in the group stages. However, i dont think it was a bad wc.
 
92’ WC was the best ever. 99’ WC would have been even better had Pakistan won it. Regarding this WC, it depends on how Pakistan does in the rest of it’s matches.

I thought 2003 was loads of fun and Pakistan was utter trash that year.

99 was better than 92 despite PAK losing. That tournament had some of cricket's greatest players in their prime.
 
At the moment yes, but this thread is way too early, its like saying your new friend sucks just because you knew him for a couple of days, wait until the tournament is over before you really judge it.

If more important games get washed out and a knock out game is massively affected then yes.

I know there are other reasons why a tournament can be bad, but not playing some games is the absolute worst because its not an even playing field.

Imagine if Pakistans matches against Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh all got washed out, these teams are by no means weak teams, but we would have had a better shot at winning these but lost 3 points because of something we can't control.

Lets see which poor team rain messes up the most.
 
Better than the last WC. Bowlers are getting help from the pitch bar one or two matches. If it wasn't for rain spoiling things, it would've been a best WC.
 
Lack of quality and rain ruining games. Tournament could end up being a joke if more games are rained out.

Also, if that happens can we organise a petition to ban ICC events from England?

The format of the league matches was great as everyone was playing everyone. So, we get to see all kinds of dream matches or encounters in WC. However, these rain matches are spoiling the tournament. I am ok with the quality of the tournament till now. It is just a start and a long way to go.
 
I've enjoyed it so far.

Yes we've had a couple of rain-affected matches, but this was always going to happen in England.

I think it's one of the most exciting WCs ever, because at this stage I think India, England, Australia, New Zealand & the West Indies are all an outside chance of winning it.

Normally in World Cups, there's only 2-3 sides who realistically look like they could hold up the trophy, this time it's 4-5.
 
This CWC19 is already tiring for its matches held mostly in single-traffic-light-towns/areas which always are more impacted by weather at this time of year, atrocious umpiring decisions and practices with ICC not even bother apologizing for, ICC oozing delinquency by not investing in a full-covering of the playing area/ ground and not installing state-of-the-art drainage systems.

Both ICC and ECB look fool now with cricket matches are getting washed out and there is no plan B.

Firstly I have no idea who holds the WC currently. I could tell you who won up until 1996 and where, but not since.

Secondly, there is no monsoon season in the British Isles. We are having unseasonal heavy rain. Usually it is sunny by June. The 1983 World Cup was held here at this time of year in hot weather. Rain in the UK is not predictable. Had they held it in July it might have hosed down then instead.

Thirdly we are only 25% of the way through the tournament so there is time for the weather to improve.

Fourthly three of the top four picks are in the top four so far.

I was also thinking of doing a similar petition If loads of games are rained out. But also this was simply horrible planning from ICC and I guess also ECB.
 
There will be no match today and tomorrow as per the weather forecast at both the places, Bristol and Taunton respectively..We might also see a washout of the match between India and Pak as there are chances of rain on 16th in Manchester...
 
Women's footy world cup is getting more coverage than cricket world cup.

With the likes of NZ topping the group rain ruining matches, will go down as worse world cup since 2007.

The weather is unpredictable!
Its the risk you take playing in our beautiful country!
If the weather is good, then theres no better place on earth to hold a cricket world cup.
Its a risk worth taking in my opinion!

Having said that if the rain continues throughout this tournament and washes out games or affects results,then unfortunately, this will be remembered as the worst wc ever.
Lets hope the sun gets it hat on soon!

That would be because of a few reasons.

1. Australia holds it in 2015.

2. Since 96, Australia has held 5 of the 6 World Cups.

3. Since 96, England have been terrible in all the World Cups played.
 
The matches have been very good but the rain is ruining things.
 
If it wasn't for the Ashes this probably would have been held in July and August (driest months in the UK).
 
Great tournament so far.

Rain is a spoiler somewhat, still tournie is great.
