Is the 2019 Cricket World Cup the worst World Cup ever?

The excitement of tight and pressure matches are going to start tommorow with Bangladesh beating Australia, Australia and NZ have only been playing pathetic teams so far you gotta remember that. Partially the same for India as well. The rain might have killed the excitement a bit because we all have to admit that the rain set up all these rubber matches but there has been a lot of close matches so far. definition of Rubber is 2015 world cup

Are you for real?

India have already played strong teams, Pak, NZ (Abandoned), AUS & SA. Barring Eng, we have pathetic teams to play like Ban, WI, SL & Afg.

Which world cup are you watching delusional?

If by the end of league stage we are still with the same standings then it’s not the formats fault if mid to bottom ranked teams cannot be consistent.

If anything it will go in favour of the format enduring the best of the best teams are able to exhibit the depth of their talent over a long period of time

All World Cups have been craap since 1992, 1999 was Ok-ish.

1999 and 2011 were quite phenomenal.

2011 had most quality games in a World Cup ever by far. Even by leagues stage it had cemented its place at the top.

I think they should go back to two groups. Putting all teams in one group is boring. The format killed the tournament in my opinion.

I would not call this World Cup the worst but it is definitely not the best.

It’s clearly better than both 2007 and 2015 already, they were both ultra dismal particularly the latter.

2007 World Cup was pretty exciting actually. Ireland and Bangladesh caused some upsets. Only issue with the tournament was it was too long.

2015 World Cup was probably the worst in history. It bored me big time.

2007 CWC had some thrillers. Upsets. Drama.

2011 CWC was awesome too. 2015 CWC was dull but we still saw unexpected results, high quality cricket and quarter finalists not decided till the very end.

Go on then.

Ones I can recall off top of my head.

NZ vs Bangladesh
AFG vs SL (being a bit generous here, SL won easy in the end)
Eng vs Pak
Aus vs WI
NZ vs SA
Ind vs Aus (again, being generous, Aus never looked like winning).
BD vs SA (again, BD always in command but I'll grant it).

Thats 7 by my count.

Awful games that were over very early on

Eng vs SA
Pak vs WI
SL vs NZ
Afg vs Aus
Eng vs WI
Eng vs Afg
Eng vs BD
Afg vs NZ
AFG vs SA
Ind vs Pak

Forgettable games

Ind vs SA
WI vs BD
Pak vs Aus

Could include wash outs too.

Issue isnt again necessarily with these games, but the format and TV scheduling. Other competitions have 1 or more games daily so if one game sucks another one immediately follows. This tournament has on occasion had two games a day. Why isnt this the norm? Schedule them as is and let fans choose what they want to watch. Game 1 ends as Game 2 hits the innings break.

WI v BD and Pak vs Aus weren't forgettable. It was a great partnership by Shakib + Litton. If it was a stronger team chasing it down then yes it would be one sided but cos it was Bangladesh chasing down such a big target with ease it was quite a big deal. And Pakistan Australia was a great match. It swung constantly, at one point Aus were ahead, then Pakistan, then Australia, then Pakistan looked like they could pull off an incredible heist at the end.

The same format was used in 1992 as well. It is the best format because every team gets to play every other team and the best and most consistent teams qualify for the semi finals. Teams who are not good enough to win most of their matches are eliminated. The likelihood of a couple of lucky wins cannot alter the course of the tournament much.

So what if some fans find this format "boring" just because their team is not good enough to win matches in this format. It is in this same format that Pakistan had won their world cup title in 1992. It is ironic to find some Pakistan fan reminding us of that title win and in the same breath berating the format of 2019 world cup, which is exactly the same format that gave Pakistan their only world cup title so far.

Ultimately, it is about the better teams advancing and weaker teams falling by the way side. It is not about the lack of enjoyment of those fans whose teams are not doing well. Fans of India, England, Australia and New Zealand are enjoying this world cup alright. And that is what matters.

This format for the worldcup is the best one. Keeps viewership instead of early knockouts. Can potentially be full of twists. Every match counts. But that being said this is a terrible world cup in terms of close matches. Thrillers, upsets. Alot of the reasons why modern 50over cricket is boring because it has gotten so one sided amongst teams are being showcased. in terms of competition I think 2011 was the best in recent times. Plus the rained out matches have spoiled this WC. Its got less to do with fans being upset their team didnt reach the top 4. Look at it more objectively

This world Cup is not for lower ranked teams. Best teams will win the world Cup.

Only concern about this World Cup is the weather.

The top four looks on a different level to the rest.

Bad Weather, Rain has hurt as well. Pitches have been fine, variety is there but overall I will say it was a kind of underachiever.

The WC could have been much better.

So far what's the memorable moment of this world cup? Only thing I can think do is rain.

India demolishing Pakistan is also so common now it's lost its charm.

Every world cup over the years is remembered due to the memorable performances, whether by teams or individuals. No one remembers 95% of matches of a world cup after few years they only remember the memories.

So far this world cup has not given us such memories. I think we need few close matches or some big performances to make it a memorable one.

The WC is too long and so far there has been no surprises either so its been a bit boring and most fans are waiting for semis.

Surely, the ICC people are not passionate about the game? It was plain money for them, with longer schedule. This World Cup has one again shown cricket is a rich mans sport.

The 2 ball per ODI rule has destroyed any competition between bat and ball in ODIs. FACT.

If my memory serves me correctly, the 2 Ball rule was invoked late 2011, after the 2011 WC.

This is why the last WC worthy of note was 2011.

Oh and get this, since the 2 ball ODI rule, boundaries have been galore!

Sixes used to be so rare they were memorable – not any more

It was entirely fitting that the former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd presented Eoin Morgan with the man-of-the-match award on Tuesday. There, in the image of old Supercat himself next to the man who has hit more sixes in an ODI innings than anyone else, was evidence of an unbroken link between master blasters past and present as well as a clear demonstration of how much the game has changed.

2 magnificent games today and particularly the night fixture. Humble pie for OP.

You gotta be joking. Washouts aside, we've seen some breathtaking games.

Worst because Pakistan may not qualify. Although, if we had been performing well, it would have been the best. Sounds reasonable.

Yes this is the worst world cup ever. My team cant is trash and cant perform against top teams therefore this is the worst world cup. Please close this thread.

Lol what have you been watching? what else do you want?

Just because Bangladesh doesnt make the world cup dosent mean that this is the worst cup ever. 2007 and 2015 were trash. You were just saying that because your team did bad those years.

Turning out to be pretty good, I would say better than any edition in this century.

Some really fantastic results and performances so far!

Might eventually be the best since 99.

Which was also in England.

Jolly old England.

2011 was awesome of course. Still up there.

Best World Cup since I have been watching cricket. Did enjoy 2011 as well. But this one has been something else.

Actually turning out to be decent In the sense that there is good balance between bat and ball and the tournament is alive courtesy of Lanka and Aus beating England

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is going to be the best ever. Fantastic games all the way through . It would've been even better if the matches werent washed out but cricket needs this format where top teams play each other once atleast.

The first week had some outstanding cricket and close contests. Eng-Pak, Aus-WI, Afg-SL and BD-NZL were superb games.

I don't how anyone can say its been worse than 2015 which was an appalling World Cup full of one sided runfests and barely a handful of close contests.

Yes the rain is massively frustrating and the venue allocations puzzling but what we HAVE seen when rain hasn't intervened has been far more entertaining than 2007 and 2015.

I came here to say just this plus in the past week or two we've had some more really good matches. The NZ/WI match was so freaking enjoying best game in this world cup!

Yep with the real intense matches with all to play for yet to come. This could end up being quite the tournament.

Gotta give england credit.

2011,2015 and now 2019.

They love keeping WC group stages alive

The tournament has been blown wide open thanks to England (well, their shortcomings at least!)

I guess they really meant it when they said they wanted this to be the best World Cup ever... a HUGE week coming up!!!

If WI beats India tomorrow and SA beats SL on Friday and we take down Afghanis on Saturday along with Aussies winning against NZ and then the ultimate punch of India beating England on Sunday - this wc will be the most thrilling ever.

England are under immense pressure now. More than they've ever been in the last 4 years now. They got knocked out in 2015 WC. They gave everything to prepare great team for WC19 and to win it.

I think poms will crumble under pressure and lose against India

It has been really exciting and the format has made it wide open which is just wonderful. I think this is one of the best WCs ever.

Few rained out matches and England choking have turned this into a thriller of an world cup. 6/30/2019 will be the D day. If England wins all the drama will be over.

The washouts are now a distant memory. It’s brilliant.

This has been the best world cup so far, the table is wide open and I still feel that Srilanka will make the last four.

Most of the posters didn’t like this format because Pakistan were doing poorly. I haven’t heard much complaints since we started winning.

Rain is back to play spoiltsport.

Could have been one of the best editions if not for rains...many close matches.

I still don't like this World Cup's format. It makes it too long.

They should have four groups with each group having three teams.

You can’t fight nature.

This is also the World Cup where quality of teams has been worst ever. Is that also England’s fault.

It’s just a sorry generation which probably deserves such weather lol

I think with rain ruined what could have been one of the best world cups if not the best.

But lately I have enjoyed it when matches get completed so I won't say it's as bad as 2007.

England should be banned from hosting world cups until they install retractable roofs in their stadiums

Actually India, New Zealand and England have their best bowling attack in a long long time. Australia has Starc giving GOAT level WC bowling performance...even Afghanisthan have two decent spinners...SL and WI are weak though...

But still no Namibia/Kenya like teams that batsmen stats boost against :sachin

Another thing i disliked about this world cup is that teams batting first have had a huge advantage once they are able to score 250. In 25 matches so far 250 has been scored by the team batting first and has been chased down only twice!

Glad England won't be hosting any more tournaments for a long long time.

Pathetic country to hold Cricket in.

I feel england is the best place in the world to have a world cup, if the weather is nice!
Unfortunately, the weather has been horrible and ruined this wc!
I feel sorry for the ecb, but i have to say this has been the worst world cup.ever due to the rain!

The World Cup started before the Champions League final.

The Champions League recommenced its qualifying stages this week.

The World cup is still going :))

Tbh the world cup hasn't had as many twists and turns as I would've liked I mean despite SL's win over England and Carlos nearly upsetting NZ, the same top four who pretty much had confirmed spots after the first few games have ended up qualifying so despite all the "action" no new team has made it into the top four.

It's been a fun world cup since I got to go to a few matches and the crowd was amazing every time except the Afghans. From Pakistan's perspective it was much much better than 2015.

From indian perspective its been a great wc bar all the rain, totally satisfied with the cricket we played.
Amazing stuff

lol barely an over lost to rain for weeks, then we have to use a reserve day to complete a (full, 100-over!) semi-final and this thread gets reactively bumped.

It’s been a good World Cup. Many enjoyable games. Better than 2007 and 2015 by far.

Some people are impossible to please.

It’s a been a good tournament bro. Some of these minnow nations who played poor quality cricket and got knocked out as a result will never be happy.

It’s been a fine tournament which may yet have some surprises.

I like the league format better than the group format because less is reduced to chance, and that Super Six idea where loads of games are played to eliminate two teams was just awful.

Let's be specific here.

The format is good no doubt, because it tests a team's endurance over a period of time, & luck doesn't plays that big a role.

However, the weather has been awful to say the least. I still feel that had that league game between India & NZ gone through, India had better chances of beating NZ, & in that case, pak would've gone through to the semis. So with Rains affecting the games, the luck factor does sneak in, which otherwise was eliminated by the format itself.

Should such major tourneys be held in England anymore? I am not too sold on it. We do have better venues in terms of weather.

Let's hope the upcoming T20WC & next 50 Overs WC have better on offer.

The whole second innings of the first semi-final was incredible - wow!

This result alone makes it the greatest ever!

Also kinda puts to bed the notion that NZ would definitely would have lost to India in the group stages, hence they were lucky to qualify.

I must give kudos to the ICC for not having 400 run pitches. There was no early swing much but something there for the bowlers for sure.

But rain played a massive spoilsport

Even the rain couldn't ruin this semi final. The heartstopping finishes and drama has been off the charts.

There's been more tense matches in this tournament than any World Cup since 1999.

PAKvENG
SRLvAFG
BANvNZL
AUSvWI
NZLvSAF
SRLvENG
AFGvIND
NZLvWI (pick of the tournament for me)
AFGvPAK
SRLvWI
SAFvAUS
NZLvIND

Now compare this to the pathetic 2015 WC where there were about three close games with the pitches being flat roads for the most part.
