Is the Bangladesh cricket team the most unpopular cricket team right now?

It was funny to watch the shocked reactions on Bangladesh social media to the utter thrashings dealt out by India.

Like dudes, were y'all really expecting anything better ? :kp

You ain't toygers. More like our bunnies in Tests and T20Is.

The Indian team is in transition with Kohli, Rohit, Jadeja out of T20's and well into decline phase in Tests and still slaughtered your team.

Shanto doesn't even want to lead this team anymore just like Litton didn't want to.

Bound to happen.

He should still retain ODI captaincy in my opinion.

He has been their best ODI batter along with Mahmudullah and that guy has retired.

There's no other option and BD look like they are going to decline in ODIs too in the short term.

In T20, they should give it to Fizz and in Tests, maybe Mehidy.

LOL. How did you come to this conclusion? Don't think you follow BD domestic cricket much.

They should be okay in ODI but may struggle in T20.

In the short term I said. Maybe after 2027 World Cup.

But I don't see anyone capable of replacing Shakib, Mahmudullah, Mushfiq in the meantime
 
In cricket, you give it your all, doesn’t matter if you are liked or not.
Bangladeshi players and fan are aggressive and passionate, cricket needs that.
 

Bangladesh Make Massive Cricket Board Overhaul, Sack 11 Directors From BCB​


The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have ousted 11 directors from the board after they missed three or more consecutive meetings in accordance with the board constitution. Among those removed are former BCB president Nazmul Hassan and Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) chairman Sheikh Sohel. The others include Manzur Kader, AJM Nasir Uddin, Anwarul Islam, Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, Ismail Haider Mallick, Tanvir Ahmed, Obeid Nizam, Gazi Golam Murtoza, and Nazib Ahmed. Additionally, the board accepted resignations from three other directors: Naimur Rahman, Khaled Mahmud, and Enayet Hossain Siraj in its 15th meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Since the Awami League government was overthrown on August 5 following a violent student uprising, none of these directors have attended BCB meetings. Many have direct or indirect links to the Awami League. Nazmul previously served as the sports minister, Shafiul as an Awami League MP, and Nasir as Chattogram's former mayor during the Awami League's 15-year tenure. Sheikh Sohel and Nazib are related to Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister, and Mallick was closely associated with Nazmul.

Prior to these departures, the BCB had 25 directors; following the recent removals, 10 remain, as one director had passed away before August.

To ensure the BCB remains functional and responsive to contemporary needs, the board has decided to form a Constitution Amendment Committee. This committee, to be headed by BCB Director Nazmul Abedeen as convener. The Committee will be responsible for assessing the current BCB Constitution, identifying areas of improvement and proposing amendments that align with the strategic goals and evolving needs of the BCB.

In a significant move to bolster athlete training, the BCB has approved the establishment of three fully equipped modern gyms at the Test venues in Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet.

"The BCB is committed to delivering the 11th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 with utmost excellence, supported by the Bangladesh Government," the board said in a release. The BPL is scheduled to commence on December 30 with the final set for February 7, 2025.

The BCB has also agreed in principle to introduce a full-fledged e-ticket system for the 11th edition of the BPL, aiming to streamline the ticketing process for fans.

I kind of over rated BD after Pakistan's series.

BD is back to very ordinary test performances. I could ignore Indian series, but folding so easily at home against SA is poor.

I guess, we need to see sustained good performance in future and not one off series to rate BD high. Yes, even if it's not series win, but good performance will do for me. They were horrible in India and horrible at home after Paksitan series.

It is possible BD players got carried away after a bit of short-term success.

Until that mentality changes (being carried away due to short-term success), I don't think long-term success is possible.
 

Hannan Sarkar resigns from selection panel to focus on coaching​


Former Bangladesh opener Hannan Sarkar has decided to resign from his role as a national selector, opting to pursue a career in coaching.

He has already informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in writing and will remain in the position until his tenure officially ends on 26 February.

Cricbuzz reports that Hannan submitted his resignation letter on 1 February, confirming his decision to step down. "Yes, I have handed them (board) the letter yesterday to step down from the selection committee," Hannan told Cricbuzz on 2 February.

Explaining his reasoning, he added, "I wish to have a career in coaching, and as a result, I don't want to continue as part of the national selection panel. If BCB feels they can include me as a coach in their setup, in that case, I am ready to consider it."

The 42-year-old played 17 Tests and 20 ODIs for Bangladesh in an international career that lasted two years.

Following his playing days, he worked with the BCB for nearly a decade as an age-level selector, playing a key role in Bangladesh's youth cricket development.

During his tenure, the Under-19 team won the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2020 and later secured their first Under-19 Asia Cup title in 2024.

His success at that level ultimately led to his promotion to the senior selection panel.

Serious question - who takes BD seriously? They don't win everything like Australia, they don't have the magic and madness of Pakistan, they don't have mystery spinners of SL or big hitters of WI. They are a very boring and unlikeable team to watch and I actively root against them. ICC has given them too much preference.
 

Faruque Ahmed removed as BCB president​

Faruque Ahmed is no longer the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president after the country's sports ministry removed him as its representative on the BCB's board of directors.

They also claim Faruque didn't perform due diligence when approving BPL franchises Durbar Rajshahi and Chittagong Kings in the 2024-25 season.

"Capable professionals have been overlooked while loyalty and personal allegiance have been rewarded," the letter read. "He is neither working for the development of Bangladesh cricket nor respecting the spirit of democratic governance."


 
BD cricket showed good signs when their pacers did well last year. Their batting has been suffering a lot. They find themselves at the same point they were in 2008. Let's see if the current pillars of the team can become the next Tamim, Shakib, Mushfiqur, Mahmudullah and Mashrafe. Litton is good. Hridoy has the raw talent.

Liton shows flashes of brilliance on occasion but he's too inconsistent to be someone they can rely on. Bangladesh has never been a particularly good team but in the past they had one world-class player in Shakib and a few okay to good players who made valuable contributions fairly regularly like Tamim, Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah. The worrying sign for Bangladesh right now is that there isn't a single world-class, or reliable player in their team. They don't seem like they can be competitive with top teams right now...in any format.

Shakib didn't become a worldclass player till 2010. He was a rising star in the preceding years. Which is why Ive said they find themselves in a position they were in 2008 or 2007.
Tanzid, Shanto, Hridoy, Shamim, Rishad, Liton all can show flashes of brilliance. But can they become reliable players remains to be seen. As we've seen from Bangladesh Cricket History, most of their cricketers' development is done after they're in the senior team. So it remains to be seen. The onus is on their board to provide them stability and conditions(coaches etc) to produce reliable players. Apart from Mustafiz, there hasn't really been a Bangladeshi player who polished his game from the domestic cricket. They usually call them up at the very start. Guys like Mosaddek who had a great record in domestics, couldn't reproduce it at international level hence the gap.

Shanto is a mediocre player. I don't ever seeing him getting better than he already is. Hridoy, Rishad, Liton all have potential but somehow don't see them rising to the level of a Shakib or even a Tamim. Out of them all Tanzid has the most potential and seems like the most natural talented. But he needs to work on his ability to convert starts. Still a batter like that who can bat with intent is a valuable addition to the white-ball sides.

Yeah but when you look at the output, its not that great. A side like Afghanistan that came much later is producing far more world-class level talent than them,
 
2019 World Cup was the last time there was excitement around the Bangladesh cricket team. They opened their campaign with a bang by beating South Africa. Pulled off an incredible run-chase against the West Indies. Even the matches they lost to better teams, they lost respectably. I remember them scoring 330+ against Australia in a match where they were chasing close to 400. Shakib had an ATG-level tournament with the bat. Mustafizur was one of the leading wicket-takers. They rarely ever looked like making the semi-finals but coming out of that tournament you felt like they were getting better and developing into a dangerous white-ball team.

Unfortunately, since then, they have only regressed.

So in July , Pakistan will tour Bangadesh for 3 T20is, hopefully Pakistan will complete the 6-0, though pitches will be anything like Gaddafi , slow and low it will be

Yes. BD pitches are likely going to be sluggish if venue is Dhaka.

If venue is Chittagong, they can expect flat pitches.
 
Bangladesh's most recent ODI series win came in March 2024, when they defeated Sri Lanka 2–1 in a home series. Since then, they haven't won a single ODI series.
 
Bangladesh hires former ICC ACU chief Marshall; Hemming joins from as chief curator after leaving Pakistan

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has roped in Alex Marshall, the former head of International Cricket Council’s (ICC’s) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), as a consultant for one year to oversee its operations.

The move comes in the wake of the BCB’s intention to “enhance its reputation” after being rocked by numerous episodes of match-fixing in recent years.

Besides Marshall, the BCB made appointed Julian Wood as a specialist batting coach for three months and Tony Hemming as head of turf management for two years.

Hemming, who resigned as chief curator of the Pakistan Cricket Board, will also be in charge of all international venues and curators in Bangladesh.

Wood is a power-hitting specialist who recently worked with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

Marshall was the ICC’s anti-corruption unit general manager until September last year.

These decisions were taken during a meeting of the Board members at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium here on Saturday.

“We appointed Alex Marshall for one year because we feel we need to enhance our ACU activities. They need to be more vigilant and receive more training,” BCB’s media committee chairman Iftekhar Rahman was quoted as saying by reporters after the meeting.

“We are receiving a lot of complaints regarding corruption. We cannot sit idle, so all we can do is increase our manpower, bring in a proper trainer, and strengthen our ACU activities - that is why we are appointing Alex for one year,” he added.

“He worked with the ICC. We think our ACU needs strengthening, which is why we are bringing him in,” he added.

Rahman also said the ICC’s integrity unit will monitor the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Meanwhile, the BCB introduced Mymensingh as the latest first-class team while replacing Dhaka Metropolis, which was introduced in 2011.

Bangladesh have announced the central contracts for their men's side for the 2026 season, covering the period from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026.

The number of players under BCB contract has risen from 22 in 2025 to 28 in the latest list.

Pacer Taskin Ahmed, who was the only player in the A+ category last year, has dropped to Grade A. An Achilles injury in February set his season back and he did not play a single Test match in 2025. He was still a presence for Bangladesh in white-ball cricket, claiming eight wickets in six ODIs and 24 wickets in 13 T20Is.

Meanwhile, Mushfiqur Rahim has dropped to Grade B since he retired from ODIs in March last year.

Consistent performances by Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Rishad Hossian and Shak Mahedi Hasan were awarded with a promotion to Grade B. Tanzid Hasan was the highest scorer in T20Is for Bangladesh in 2025, while Rishad Hossain was the top wicket-taker in ODIs as well as T20Is last season.

Their fans are actually more entertaining (for all the wrong reasons) than their cricket team, I'd give them that much.
 
I used to think that but i realized this time seeing all the people that have missed them in this world cup, that how valuable and dear they always were but we never realized that.

Bangladesh was only unpopular because despite ICC funding and pampering them for almost 3 decades, all they ever had to offer was mediocrity and being a waste of space in the World Cups.

Now that it's no longer the case, people should stop hating on the Bangladesh team, they are a non-entity.

Lol poor guy probably washes dishes for a living in an Indian restaurant, not like there is anything wrong in that, it’s just that the amount of time he spends here makes it seem like he doesn’t have much of a life outside this forum.

He seems to use trolling Indians online as a way to cope with whatever misery he’s dealing with in real life.
