What's new

Is the golden era of Indian Test cricket (2001 to 2023) now over?

Good to know that some Pakistanis are willing to acknowledge a golden period of Indian cricket even existed. Even if it's in hindsight. It's always easier to acknowledge something scary when you truly believe that it has passed :dhoni

As to OP's question - just need to find a third seamer to partner Bumrah-Siraj. I think it's Arshdeep. Gill needs to be more assertive in team selections and weed out the hangers-on like Jadeja, and India can then rebuild to something very watchable.

Lol I've never been scared to praise Indian cricket. Ganguly and Kohli are icons.

Yup. I think it is over.

Lost 0-3 to NZ at home
Lost 1-3 to Australia away
Struggling in England now
Dropped in ranking too; they are now at #4 (may become #5 after England series)

You guys are defo weaker then kohli's era.

First and foremost ashwin is gone. Jadeja is terrible overseas and at home hes a fraud duatbowl king who satner exposed after ashwin was finished.

Kohli in his prime avg 55 and was a much better no 4 batsmen then current Gill.

Bumrah is declining now. He's still a goat bit i can tell BGT kinda killed his stamina with rohit running him into the ground.

India will never be able to play all 5 test series with bumrah, bunrah will now play 3 max meaning 2 matches will be played without your ace star.

In 2 years that no will decrease from 3 to 2.

The current crop of bowling is rubbish. This arshdeep myth will be exposed as well although granted he is much better then Shan Masood(Krishna) as a bowler.

Sai and Karun will falter.

I will keep my mouth shut on jaiswal for now cause rowdy crowd.

Gill isnt a great test batsmen. I was trolling earlier but Mr feet dont move, I will only play grounded shots is playing whiteball cricket shots in red ball cricket. His peak will be a 40 avg at best and his decline will be 32-33. Currently hes 35-37 anyway.

Pant is a gem(i was wrong about him) but he alone aint doing jiggly jack.

This test side isnt strong. Infact india in early 2000's were much stronger. They had a batting lineup that could ensure draws or wins and cover for a non existent bowling lineup which is why they managed to upset classic aus.

This batting lineup is not that strong lol. The tail is worse then 70 era tail, the ace star batsmen at no 4 is at best a 38-40 avg batter.

Heavy heavy load on Pant.

The "golden run" was over when they lost that NZ series at home.

It's going to be a 1-2 year rebuild phase for India's Test team where they rework the Test combination. Gill also needs time to grow into his captaincy role.

What can Indian fans learn?

They should learn how to be humble. Cricket is a funny game. Things can always change quickly. :inti

Without Kohli and Ashwin team looks lost. After the humiliation by NZ and now this embarrassment surely the team is at it's lowest ebb since the late 90s?

Unless a new Ganguly emerges can't see a recovery.

Even the Aussies haven't got the guys who can form a world class attack.

In 2011 ish, they produced Hazlewood, Starc , Cummins and Pattinson at the same time.

I'm not sure they have even 1 bowler of that quality waiting in the ranks.

Maybe Vidler in the future but that's it.

I said it as far back as that infamous SA tour of NZ where they sent a completely new side

Test cricket was never going to be the same after 2023

How is losing an away test match with a young team in transition on the final hour of 5th day is embarrassment?

India had this Test match in the bag, but they threw it away and frankly, they deserved this humiliation. The way Gautam pushed Virat, Ashwin and Rohit into retirement, sidelining three of the most experienced players, backfired spectacularly. Today’s loss to England from a winning position is on the management.

After Rohit’s retirement, the Test captaincy should have gone to Virat, who is easily India’s greatest captain in Test cricket. He deserved the chance to finish on a high and to be given the respect he earned through his leadership and performances. But Gautam clearly had a personal agenda and ignored him, handing the role to Gill, who with his poor Test average was neither ready nor deserving of the job. The order should have been Virat first, then Bumrah, and if not them, then Pant. This is the Indian national team, not someone’s personal property where you bring in your favourites and misuse the power that has been given to you.

Nah...all is not lost.

Had we took even half our chances this game, we wouldn't even see this thread.

But yes...we ain't never going back to the highs of 2021. Indian test cricket was at its all time high when we beat England at the oval and took 2-1 lead.

This will be an era of test cricket where no team is dominant away from home. India will be fine they will mainly win at home, as will England and Australia.

After Pakistan’s humbling defeat to India in the Asia Cup, the narrative from some Indian fans has been that Pakistan’s downfall in ODIs and T20s began after that crushing 228-run loss. From rank no 1, to a humiliating outing in 2 world cups. The argument goes that Pakistan never recovered from that humiliation, spiraling downwards in the aftermath in odi cricket and t20 cricket.

But let’s turn the lens around. India, not too long ago, faced their own massive defeat at home, getting bundled out for a mere 46 runs by New Zealand. They followed that by being swept 3-0 at home in the series, then suffered a 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Most recently, India was hammered by England.

Now, the question: Why isn't the same analogy applied to India? Where's the acknowledgment that such a humiliating defeat could have had a long-term effect on India's cricketing fortunes? If we’re to take the “downhill spiral” narrative seriously, shouldn’t India's struggles also be seen as a result of that 46-all-out humiliation?

It’s time to stop cherry-picking when it suits the narrative and recognize that every cricketing team, no matter how strong, can go through rough patches.

LoI team is really good though

All the money is in LoI

But yea test is finished

India will just quit tests. No one wants to play anymore

Just quit I suppose

We should just eliminate ourselves no?

Gambir needs to be fired.
