Is there any hope for Bangladesh after Shakib Al Hasan retires?

Injuries are getting very frequent now for Shakib. I’m starting to think his career is slowly coming towards the end phase. Bangladesh are very reliant on him as a wicket taking bowler and a breath of fresh air for their brittle batting order. Their senior players have hit 30, and although they can hang around for another 5-6 years. Surely, they will have to retire.

I personally, think Bangladesh will reach their previous rankings of 9 or 10 and languish their after their retirements. As their is no real talent emerging from Bangladesh.

What are your opinions??

Lots of world class players r coming out of Bangladesh due to its superior domestic structure.

What's surprising is the fact that it's first class structure isn't even 20 years long. In future the number of world class players coming out of BD will increase by ten folds since its domestic cricket will get more nature by then.

As for the main question of this thread, yes BD will continue to be the second best team from Asia, especially in ODIs.

Remember how BD thrashed Pakistan with their second string team in Asia Cup. That team didn't have shakib, tamim and couple of other key players.

So yes, shakib will be a big loss, but I believe even after his retirement BD will continue their dominance.

their current bunch of junior jokestars are worst than the likes of akmal brothers. It's a shame really. The team started to finally show some potential, but after their senior retires, I see them back to where they were not to long ago.
Not necessarily.

All of them have potential. Their problem lies elsewhere. Most of them r very young. Hence, they don't have the mental ability to cope up with the sudden fame/popularity. Once they get psychologically mature enough, these same bunch will dominate world cricket with their performances.

Mushfiqur Rahim is the perfect example of that. His performance in the early part of his career was abysmal.

But that same Mushfiqur has become an unstoppable force in recent years and now he's considered as one of the top 5 middle order batsmen in the world across all format.

They have got some decent batsmen, the main thing I noticed about Bangladesh is that they don't have any quality bowler, which will haunt them for a long time.

Well this Bangladesh team beat Pakistan in UAE without Tamim or Shakib and almost won the Asia Cup, there is life without them. It will still be few more years before he and others retire and by that time new youngsters will possibly come up.

Asia cup is not a good to judge BD cricket. Liton Das scored a century in the final, but he has been a complete hack.

Shakib already basically retired from BD cricket, you rarely see him play for BD these days.

This world cup is BD last chance to achieve anything in Cricket before all the 5 senior players retire. On paper the team actually looks decent.

Surprised you think BD domestic structure is good. Anamul Hoque who has been an utter failure in international is now scoring centuries for fun. Even the likes of Farhad Reza can BOSS BD domestic.

I don't think you are understanding the point here. Mushfiqur almost took a decade to up his game to where he is now. Possibly your best batsmen in the team. However, to keep the same tempo and expecting to climb up the ranking ladder, you can't expect the same of the current juniors. You can't expect them to take 10 years to stabilize their game. If that is the case, its back to square one.

Also, a bit off topic, some of the things I've read about the BD players are pretty bad when you're a public figure. Hitting kids, beating up wife, beating up house-maids, list goes on. Once stories like this is made public, it takes a toll in the cricket field. Mental stress outweights skills in many cases. BCB needs to hire a psychologist to make them strong mentally and avoid doing stupid things like I mentioned above.

I've understood ur point clearly my friend.

Let me elaborate the point I made in my post by giving the example of Mushfiqur.

As u know, he's one of the top 5 middle order batters in the world right now. But even a player of his caliber struggled in his initial years due to lack of maturity.

Same goes for the new Bangladeshi players. There r 8/10 top class young Bangladeshi players who r either in the team or warming up the bench.

These players have the capability. But since they r young/immature, they can't actually replicate their full potential on the field. This is why u will see that one day they r playing innings that's simply out of this world and the very next day they r playing as if they haven't played cricket in their entire career.

If u look carefully u'll see that most of the Bangladeshi young players r excellent stroke makers. They have the ability to smash any bowling attack on their day. But their problem is they always try to play too aggressive(due to their lack of maturity) and in the process get out.

These very same bunch will cut down their aggressiveness with time and as they get mature.

My point is players like Amanul, Soumya, Miraz, Sabbir, Taskin all posses exceptional ability which they have already shown in many occasions. Their main problem is in their consistency which will improve with their maturity.

By the time Mushfiqur, Tamim, Shakib and Mahmadullah will retire these young players will get mature enough and will be ready to take the mantle form their seniors.

So did Ashraful, look where he is at now. Talent without hardwork can only take you so far. These young guns don't seem to work hard to begin with. There is no doubt that the young fellas in the team has potential and are capable of doing the miracle once in a bluemoon, however consistency is what you want. Without that, your team will be a bottom feeder.

One thing I consistently see alot of BD posters do is always play the maturity card. Like bro, how much more mature does a player needs to be? Take Sharkar as an example, the guy has played close to 100 international matches (all formats combined), still bats like a rookie most of the time. Not to mention he is 26 - how old is too young and not mature for you? Even Taskin has about 50ish international matches under his belt - don't see much improvement from him either. Sabbir, 27 years old, too has over 100 international matches under his name but can't cross that 25 avg, just like Ashraful. The list goes on. However I think that Miraz kid might turn out to be a gem for you guys.

Bangladesh cricket chief Nazmul Hassan said Shakib Al Hasan will remain as Test captain despite disliking the format and expressing his reluctance to stay on following this week’s embarrassing defeat to Afghanistan.

Nazmul admitted the allrounder had shown little interest or enthusiasm for the five-day game — an attitude which would not have been helped by Monday’s 224-run loss to Afghanistan in Chittagong. “We have noticed he did not have much interest in Test (cricket). You have seen that when we were touring foreign countries, he wanted to have a break during the Tests,” Nazmul told reporters in Dhaka late on Wednesday.

“Naturally he might have less interest. But we never heard that he has less interest in captaincy. If he is skipper, then he has to play. If you are not skipper, then you can skip,” he said.

Hassan’s comments came after Shakib said he no longer wanted to lead the side in Tests following the chastening defeat to minnows Afghanistan, who were playing only their third five-day game. Bangladesh became the first team to lose to 10 different Test sides with the defeat, which followed a lacklustre World Cup and 0-3 one-day whitewash by Sri Lanka in July.

Shakib, who shone at the World Cup with 606 runs and 11 wickets but was skipper for the Sri Lanka tour, said his performances might improve if he relinquished the captaincy. “It will be best if I didn’t have to lead,” Shakib told reporters after the Afghanistan loss. “I personally believe it will be good for my game.

“And if I have to continue leading, then obviously there is a lot to discuss about (with the board),” he said.

Hassan said he spoke with Shakib on Tuesday after the Afghanistan loss, but that the player did not raise any concerns. “Our boys are emotional. I will speak with him when things get calm,” he said.

Shakib will now lead Bangladesh in a tri-nation Twenty20 tournament involving Afghanistan and Zimbabwe starting in Dhaka on Friday.

Things are not looking good for Bangladesh at this moment. I don't know what the future holds.

To be fair, when Shakib started his career, he was a nobody. He was nothing special. He became a star later on through hard work. We need a few players to step up like he did.

One of the problems is that the coaching staff sees themselves as coaches of a 'minnow' team so are happy to aim to be a middling outfit.

Also seems guys like Mashrafe, Mushfiq, Shakib and Tamim have not played their role in grooming the next generation

You are correct. Coaches can't set too high expectations because team doesn't perform consistently. It has been the story since our inception. I think solution is to improve skills at grassroots level.

I can't say how ready the next generation of players are. We have to wait and see. Afif is looking good and hopefully he can replace Shakib after he retires.

Shakib s once a generation type player who would have walked in to any ODI team in his peak so even Australia would struggle to replace him let alone Bangladesh. It would be unfair to judge any new player in that regard

#DidYouKnow ?

Shakib Al Hasan made his T20I debut in 2006. For nearly 15 years he wasn't out LBW🫡

In 2021, Shakib was Out "LBW" for the first time in his career. The bowler was Adam Zampa.

Bangladesh was improving during the mid of 2010-2020 and much of its credit goes to the club cricket circuit along with the dhaka premier league.

At one time it looked liked as if they would take over Pakistan when the Bangladeshis were winning at home.

But than politics happened. The sanr old subcontinent tamasha where the chairman thinks he k ows better and he starts to destroy everything and gets directly involved in the selection matters.

Another problem was, Bangladesh never had a good captain and they failed to develop Nasir Hossain. For many months Nasir was kind of an anchor in between that always gave a chance to Bangladeshis.

I think they shpuld had developed Tamim as a captain. Guys like Shakib and Rahim were just jazbati fools that did nothing for the team as captains and only know how to overreact to the smallest of things.

Bangladesh needs to find a captain first, and move away from shakib, rahim, mahmadullah and co.

Get a captain, bring a few anchors and bring stability in the batting.

Also in the bowling they need to keep on developping an arsenal of an attack.

Like the Indians, Bangladeshis went gaga over 2 or 3 bowlers they unearthen. I think it was that mustafizur and than taskin on whoch they were going crazy. They even did not allow Mustafizur play alot of games because they feared he would be figured out lol. This was because their BCB chairman again got involved and made the decision not to play him

Anyways, in the long run their bowlers failed to live up the hype.

Bangladesh cricket has learned to survive and will also survive another decade, but if they want to start winning again from home, they need to find their captain.

Bumrah, shami, siraj and ishant have helped us win multiple test matches and series in SEA, unlike your legendary phaast bowlers who couldn't win a single home series against eng, aus, nz and got whitewashed in aus.

Oh, how can I forget the dropping matches to even sl and wi.

And how many icc trophies in the last 10 years?

Plz dont derail this thread now. Come back when you hold a current icc title

This thread is about Bangladesh and Shakib, Please do not turn this thread into India team thread. Stay on topic

come to me when you don't get spanked in a test series at home and not get humiliated by us is in a wc. Is that too big to ask?

and you are the one who brought up india in a thread that has nothing to do with it

Only one match winner can't make you a champion for that a team must have at least 5 to 6 performers on whom they can build their side. So I think after Shakib's retirement Bangladesh will go further down the slope.
