What's new

Is this the biggest India - Pakistan game there has ever been?

I'm still amazed at how Pakistan lost the 1996 QF. That 96 team was complete, moreso than the much more heralded 99 side. There was a real gulf between the two sides but India handled the pressure better.

Waqar choked big time, continually missing his yorker length as Jadeja smashed him to all parts of the ground. To make matters worse we had one less over to chase the score due to slow over rate.

Despite that, Anwar and Sohail got us off to a lightning start. We were 84-1 after 10 overs and 113-2 after 15 - we don't make such starts even in T20s nowadays that's how ferocious that top order start was ! I still remember the hushed silence and sound of a handful of claps as our openers made that start.

Then Sohail got stupid and the middle order imploded though there was some late resistance from Miandad (who got criticised for tuk tuk) and Latif.

The atmosphere was electric in Bangalore and I remember the banter in school. Still have a bitter taste from that defeat.

yeah and with the final in Lahore it was a game set for Pakistan to win consecutive world cups.

Read a funny one on whatsapp -
70 saalon bad England ne phir wahi kia
Tum lado hum chalein :))

Being a proper one day final it is indeed the biggest Indo-Pak match until now. Regretfully, even if Pak win I won't feel as if we have avenged all those past defeats.

2011 WC semi has to be the biggest, as it was on a bigger stage. I'd even say 96 QF was bigger. WC > Champions Trophy.

This is probably on par with 2007 T20 final... IMO T20 = ODIs.

Lol, most people in India aren't even aware of what's going in the tournament and you are comparing it with a World Cup match :))

Not best match though would be one of the best match . but i want pakistan to win this match though i know people like latif will do chitroll to india still. The reason is i want pakistan to taste the victory in these important matches that how it feels. The whole atmosphere, watching match with friends, party time, big screens everywhere, media , celebrations., cricketers become huge stars..its awsome, cant really explain.Only then you wont even mention like sharjahan wins or kitley putley cups wins.
Plus it will bring back rivalry of both india versus pakistan.we indians wud really want then to play and beat the sh* t out of them. it will help pakistan cricket to grow.

Nope, biggest was the 2011 semis.

If Pakistan wins this then we will see a new generation of great talent coming out of Pakistan.

Yes, we have lost to India many time in world cup and other matches, but 2011 semi final loss still hurts, we lost due to Misbah was trying to draw it.

That was the biggest India-Pakistan game we ever had, was too much at stake.

1996 quarter final comes 2nd

This is the biggest since 2011 Semi final.

What??? Your TV programmes can't get enough of talking about the tournament. Far more Indian then Pak fans are attending matches even in the UK:rahat1

2011 Mohali was the biggest and also the most painful Pakistan defeat since I started watching cricket.

The fact that we had in my opinion the better team, and how we could have defeated them in their own backyard in front of their PM and all their celebrities is something that is extremely difficult to get over.

Also what makes it worse is that if it wasnt for incompetence in the field on our behalf, and a glaring umpiring error, we probably would have got the win too.

That 2011 World Cup was ours

What a team we had

Kamran
Hafeez
Shafiq
Younis
Misbah
Umar Akmal
Afridi
Razzaq
Gul
Ajmal
Akhtar/Wahab

Why did we loose remember I went mosque to go for my lesson really hard all the lads came,Towards the end I learnt from one of the lad that they were loosing,We obliviated every single team in that Cup even the mighty Australia lost to us,apart from New Zealand(remember I started to cry on the sofa because they lost)Ever since that New Zealand game I hate saying Shoaib Akhtar is a good bowler.

For me personally 2011 was the biggest cricket match ever.
SRT's last chance of winning a WC.
India had a chance to win at home.
The final took part in Mumbai (2 and a bit years after the Mumbai terror attack - should not link it to cricket but was part of my thinking).
The only time i have ever struggled to sleep because of a cricket match.
Would not swap that win for anything (cricket related).

I would say the Benson and Hedges 85 was bigger than this
Reasoning
It was a mini world cup final, like the champions trophy with group matches and then knockouts semi finals onwards, the first time the two teams were meeting in a final, and balanced teams.
Above them are the World Cup knockouts, 96 quarter final, 2011 Semi finals, 2003 virtual knockout
The t20 finals is nearly equivalent because the tensions were running high, it was the first t20 cup

So this one is nearly 5th, only the 99 match would rank below this.

Bro are you sure you watched that NZ match?

Ross Taylor was dropped twice off Akhtar and another time off Afraid.

Pakistan dropped Tendulkar what? 4-5 times?

Pakistans fielding lost them that World Cup.

this time pakistani team looks much stronger and confident than any other previous encounters

In which universe is the team made up of current hacks better than the one that played in 1999 and 2003 WCs? That team had Akram, Waqar, Inzi, Md. Yousuf, Akhtar, etc. Or the one in 1992 WC which had Imran and Miandad.

Course I watched it I was at school,For majority of both matches but,I heard they dropped tendulkar 5 times, had to go mosque during Paks innings,

Off course they dropped Taylor but he gave Shoaib a right beating,They made 100 in like 6 overs, was at school at the time

because in 1992 luck favoured pak and due to rain qualified for next round, in 1999, pakistan lost 2 out of three super six matches and because it only needed one game to win, it defeated zimbabwe to reach semi finals

but in CT17, the team has defeated top level teams convincingly to reach the finals

Oh I see. So you're acknowledging that 1992 was 100% fluke and that your 1999 team was weak? Fine. I'll let you argue this point with your own countrymen. In another thread, someone was claiming that Pak deserved to win the 1999 WC!

no i didnt say that, all i said is, the present team is looking much better and has better chances than all previous teams to thrash india and win CT, thats all

Based on what? This team was beaten black-and-blue less than 2 weeks ago! At least in 2003, you guys ran it close till the half-time. This time India didn't even allow Pak to enter the ground.

The hype for the 2011 SF was next level. This one does not even come close.

1996 QF probably generated the most passion in fans.

A match that had ball tracking fraud to ensure Tendulkar was not out. The single most obvious cheating to save a batsman. The company behind the ball tracking admitted later that they had used the wrong ball tracking template to show the ball missing the stumps. It was obvious that the ball was clearly hitting the stumps and the english umpire who gave the initial out was astonished to see his decision reversed. I think that was the biggest match, unfortunately the political emotions to that match were high.

The upcoming final is a mismatch. India have moved on significantly and a very strong outfit. Pakistan have surpassed their expectations and current rankings, I do not have any expectations to win and hopefully they don't get embarrassed again. If they fight hard and keep it close then that would be good.

.

Got a credible source to back that up ?

Markhor, even in the end we needed 58 off 36 balls with 5 wickets left.

That game was there to be won.

I think it depends on what kind of a final we´ve. Simply stating which was the biggest won´t suffice for me if the match itself turns out to be a completely one-sided affair. In that sense, World T20 Final 2007 is to this day the greatest final that a cricket world event has seen. Extreme pressure, and the game had like 100 moments where the game kept on shifting the momentum. Besides, it had some quality cricket, some smart batting, jaw-dropping hitting, accurate bowling containing toe-crushing yorkers, and some brilliant fielding (something that you can´t associate with an Indo-Pak match, especially 10 years ago). So it had everything that you can wish to see in a final.

Mohali 2011 was another big occasion of course, but it had poor cricket on display from both sides, mostly at least, and the winner was clear the moment the likes of Razzaq and Afridi got out. Hoping for Misbah to do something impossible that evening was hoping against a hope.

I don´t have any memories of watching the quarter-final of 1996, but highlights and the scorecard to this day suggest that that too must´ve had some quality cricket on display. But again, the result was obvious once Pakistan had that collapse after that bombasting opening stand.

The World Cup 2003 match possibly contained the most classy ODI innings of all times, certainly the most jaw-dropping, amazing and awesome display of batting that I´ve seen in my life, but the occasion of course wasn´t as huge. It was huge, just not as huge.

So again, for me at least, the end result will decide how big the occasion was.
