Has the India-Pakistan rivalry become overhyped?

Is the India vs Pakistan rivalry still the biggest spectacle in cricket, or has it lost its edge?

For decades, India vs Pakistan has been billed as the biggest clash in world cricket, a game where emotions run high, stadiums sell out in minutes, and fans on both sides treat it as more than just a match.

Is the hype still justified, or are we holding onto nostalgia?

With one-sided results, no bilateral series, and rising commercial interests, is this rivalry still the pinnacle of cricketing competition or has it become a marketing product that doesn’t always deliver on the field?

Forget about Rivalry. Pakistan as an individual unit has lost charm. Because they lack superstars, personalities. They look like how Bangladesh players looked when they started playing. Looks like an unit of no-names with no real world class achievement. It is unrecognizable compared to yesteryear pakistan units.

It’s certainly feels totally one- sided (for now) but for old timers like me, it’s difficult to fully let go.

I’ve followed the cricket for long enough that even Wasim, Inzy, Waqar, Shoaib etc are a recent phenomenon.

I still remember watching live guys like Asif Iqbal, Miandad, Imran, Qadir.

So I remember their glory days, that incredible aura on some of those lads, and while I massively enjoy every beat down we manage to give Pakistan, I have a lot of respect for who they were. Woh bhi kya khiladi they

I am curious to know if these cinema houses will be filled.

As per reports: PVR INOX will show the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup final across 100+ screens in India.

From boycott to public screening...within two weeks...LOL

what a turnaround and hypocrisy reaching new heights... @DeadlyVenom @Mamoon @mominsaigol @Rana wana go to cinema to watch this??

If only Pakistan can win this final to claim the bragging rights , let's hope FM gives them a pep talk before game

I still enjoy it throughly beside the results, it's like watching horror movie when you know most, if not all the good guys, will get slaughtered but you hope they can come on top somehow.

My obsession is Toxic?

Didn’t I tell you to stop the obsession with Harris? It will come back to haunt you?
Most posters so far have been right about Mohd Haris, he is no match for Rizwan, certainly not in keeping and batting performances been insignificant mostly, but I will still give him longer rope to prove himself as he has not had a permanent position in the batting order.

From packing the beg to play against UAE after surrendered infront of BCCI and ICC.

I clearly remember how Pakistan fans started to celebrated as soon as rumour of Pakistan boycott against UAE spreading over social media.

@Major was already opened a thread about celebration of boycott joined by @DeadlyVenom and rest of Pakistan fans .

But soon PCB Shown the mirror by experts about boycott ,they surrendered and Play the match with same match referee .

so you're going to which cinema to watch the game because your bhangra of boycott is over?

I wanted match to happen as its always pleasure to watch when India humiliate Pakistan .

I usually like to watch cricket alone so that no one can disturb me.

Had the rivalry been overhyped the coming game would not have the potential to be most watched game of 2025.

The rivalry is and was always there. Even before Miandad's last ball six when India never let Pak win after their 1983 world cup victory. It was even there after the Miandad's six ,when Pak didn't let India win for more than a decade and a half.
Afterwards, India tactically chose to not play Pak because cricket was married to politics and India wanted to avoid embarrassment

The only reason India is playing the Asia Cup right now is because they have a stronger team currently. If we were a stronger team, this Asia Cup wouldn't be taking place right now.

In summary, regardless of which team is stronger...the rivalry was, is and will always be there because...Pak vs India cricket matches are not only a battle of cricket skills but also a platform to maintain unsettled political scores and emotional grudges.

Agree with most but disagree with the highlighted part. Asia Cup has always happened before. It's been happening since 1984 and this is already the 18th edition in 41 years.

Did I hit a nerve of poster who is always embarrassing himself.
No, you only continued what you people do. Make things up…

Such as “paKisTaaN wiLl noT suRviVe in IntErnAtIonal cRickEt wIthOut baBar anD riZWan” 🤡

Just be quiet now. Sit down. Enough of you people’s nonsense!

That's not complete info. Asia cup was supposed to take place every two years. It was skipped multiple times.

When did India stop playing Pakisran out of embarrasement ?

If anything India used to play more often in the 90s when they wer losing more often. And then stopped playing when we had better side. We used to play in all sorts of random places in the 90s - Toronto , Sharjah , Singapore. Bilateral series were banned but it was on both sides. Pakistan withdrew from 1990 India tour due to Kashmir issue ( 1 day before 1st test )

Never ever said any of that, simply criticised Haris on merit, difference between you and me is you attack players on your own personal agendas, which you admit to, whereas I do so on performance and so far I have seen nothing from Haris to say he has performed better than Rizwan, who himself is not suitable for the modern T20s. Now go and sit at the back if class and come back with better excuse.

But strictly talking about Asia cup , Pakistan never has a good record even when they had Miandad and others. This is a bogey tournament for them.

India reached three ICC finals in a row—ODI WC, T20 WC, CT—and still couldn’t generate cinema-level hype. But one Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup? Boom. Big screen treatment. That’s not just cricket, that’s Pakistan’s aura.

If Pakistan doesn't win today, then it will be officially end. Losing 3 games in a row against your archrivals will be pure humiliation.

These guys and their bubbles!! Boom 🤣

I just don't feel the hype i felt say 15 years back. It feels contrived and forced. It is going to be the same feeling had BD or SL met India in the final. Except i wouldn't bother much losing to them. That is the only interest. For broadasters sake these commentators hype these matches. They get instructions to hype. It is a staged drama. This Asia cup will have some relevance only if Pak wins. If India wins it will be a tepid affair.

No hype but 100 cinema screen across India and full stadium,.

That would be the same if INdia had faced Bangladesh lol You think Indians will turn off TV had they faced Srilanka? Purely from a cricketing stand point this rivalry is dead long back.

It's ok, SKY made a good statement now we can go back to normal like nothing happened
I disagree with the reason of SKY. But agree with point about rivalry being dead. IPL matches sIndia vs zimbabwe had an attendance of 87000 at the MCG in 2022 T20 worldcup. India vs Pakistan had an attendance of 89000. People watch India matches for India not for who they play. Be it is England or Australia or South Africa. They will watch for India. Pakistan cannot steal credit there. Both are heavily populated countries. Obviously there is going to be increased viewership. India has played what 12 matches against pakistan in the last 10 years?

For the record 2021 india vs pakitan world cup had viewership of 165 million. One of the highest
2025 IPL final had 169 million viewers.

Jason Holder while speaking during Game on with Grace:

"I don’t like this whole India and Pakistan beef. They are two powerhouses in world cricket. To see how things have transpired it’s just sad. I saw India win the Asia Cup and didn’t go on stage to accept the trophy. I think it’s too much; these things should not be in our game.

We as cricketers are ambassadors for the world. If we are talking about world peace and making the world a better place, that’s not what you want to see from your idols. If you are inspiring a generation, we have to find a way to come together. I get it, it’s a long history behind it. But it can change if we as cricketers, come together because we have the influence."

Grace Hayden: "We saw what happened during the IPL and PSL. It was scary. I was in India at the time and it was tough, you did not know what was going to happen. I have great respect for both countries; they are such beautiful people, beautiful cultures. I love both countries. That’s why it hurts everyone in cricket in times like this, because we have such respect and love for both countries."

Holder: "I was in Pakistan at the time. I didn’t feel unsafe but it was so much uncertainty. I think it’s so hard to be in a World Cup for example and you have to shift games because India can’t come to Pakistan when cricket is supposed to be played in Pakistan or vice versa. I think it’s so wrong.

Jason Holder's social media will be fun to look at now. Rabid degenerates will be flooding to write one hate comment after another.

Pakistan needs to win some games to add spice to this now paper rivalry.

Im pretty sure Pakistan fans will agree its not much of a rivalry currently. With conmen like Naqwi currently at the helm of PCB, things will only get worse and the gap will widen. Currently I see Pakistan as a Tier 2 team.

It’s definitely a rivalry re-awoken after Surya’s antics.

This is a meaningless, white ball only (primarily t20) rivalry. 20 years of no tests between these two teams. Boring.

Dear Brother,

This is not a rivalry.
It is the sorrow of two brothers standing on opposite banks of the same river, waving at each other across history.

Every time India and Pakistan meet on a cricket field, something older than the sport awakens. We are reminded not of victory or defeat, but of what we once were, and of the strange, painful fact that we are no longer one people under one sky.

The match resurrects memories we did not personally live, yet somehow carry in our blood. A shared language of streets and songs. Shared tears, shared prayers, shared soil. And alongside it, the long civilizational tension between Islam and Sanatan, unresolved, layered, heavy with centuries of belief, fear, devotion, and misunderstanding.

The cricketers are not warriors. They are mirrors. Puppets of collective emotion, carrying on their shoulders our pride and our pain, our anger and our longing, our hope and our heartbreak.

That is why this encounter will never be ordinary.
It is not just bat against ball.
It is memory against memory.
Brother against brother.
Love quietly arguing with loss.

And perhaps that is why, no matter how many years pass, this contest will always feel different. Because somewhere beneath the noise, we are not watching a game. We are watching ourselves.

India v Pakistan was huge , bigger than most football derby’s.

There is too much cricket now , too many formats , lack of great players on either side .

You will never a Kapil v Imran or Akram v Tendulkar.

Nay... not overhyped... It is the crowd puller... people want to see these matches.

India vs Pakistan: Eager fans brave surge in travel costs for T20 World Cup

For Indian cricket fans travelling to Sri Lanka this weekend, the opportunity to watch their team take on archrivals Pakistan in the T20 World Cup has come at the cost of inflated airfares, soaring hotel prices and a long wait for matchday tickets.

But these are mere sacrifices that thousands are willing to make to witness the most heated rivalry in the sport as it unfolds on Sunday at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Fuelled by a decades-long fraught political relationship, cricket encounters between India and Pakistan are among the biggest spectacles in sport — often framed as bloodthirsty contests of national pride.

For the first time in the history of the World Cup, geopolitical tensions threatened to put the marquee contest in doubt until Pakistan’s government reversed its order for a boycott of the match.

While the near-last-minute U-turn revived excitement, it came at a price for the Indian supporters making late travel plans. Pakistan’s participation was confirmed only six days before the fixture, triggering a sharp surge in airfares from several Indian cities.

Fans who booked their air tickets weeks in advance, too, paid significantly higher fares due to the significantly higher demand surrounding any India-Pakistan match, which is commonly deemed the most lucrative fixture in cricket.

“I paid a premium of approximately 50 percent compared to the usual rates,” Aditya Chheda, a finance professional from Mumbai, told Al Jazeera. “This was despite booking a month in advance and opting for a layover instead of a direct flight.”

Flight, hotel prices skyrocket

A nonstop round-trip journey from India’s western metropolis Mumbai to Colombo, which typically costs approximately $275, went upwards of $1,000 two days before the match.

Similar fares were spotted for nonstop journeys from Bengaluru in southern India, while round-trip nonstop flights from Chennai to Colombo – a route that takes only about an hour and 20 minutes – had surged to at least $550, up from its usual fare of $165.

Planning ahead helped Bengaluru resident Parth Chauhan secure deals at a good price, but his friends accompanying him to Colombo had to pay a steep premium – three times the usual cost – after booking closer to the match date.

Accommodation costs rose sharply as well. Tariffs at five-star hotels in Colombo ranged between $400 and $1,000 per night from Saturday to Monday, when most spectators were expected to fly in and out.

Chauhan, who works in a cybersecurity organisation, had to wait a whopping four hours in a virtual queue to buy match tickets, but he insists the hassle was worth the wait, as he gears up to watch India play abroad for the first time.

“It’s an opportune moment, and there is a lot of exuberance to witness this because it’s a historic fixture,” he said.

For a lucky few, the surprise came not from the difficulty of securing tickets but from their unusually low price. Piyush Nathani, an IT professional from Bengaluru, paid only $5 for the fixture, which draws millions in broadcast, sponsor and advertising revenue.

“This is the cheapest ticket I’ve ever purchased. Just $5 to watch a World Cup match, that too of the magnitude of India vs Pakistan, is a steal,” said Nathani, who has travelled with a group of six friends.

‘More than a cricket match’

Having been part of the Ahmedabad crowd in 2023 that saw India beat Pakistan in a 50-over World Cup group game, Nathani is relishing the chance to watch Sunday’s match in a neutral venue, where fans from both countries are expected to be present.

“The feeling of beating Pakistan is something money cannot buy,” added the 29-year-old.

Like Nathani, Chheda has also travelled abroad previously to watch Team India. The 32-year-old watched India lift the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados and now wants to “pick up where I left off”.

“When there’s a World Cup, the first thing Indian fans hope for is to beat Pakistan,” he added.

“Winning the World Cup is the biggest target, but beating Pakistan feels like a moral victory – it’s more than a cricket match.”

Yes, because it's hyped more for what happens off the field than on the field. That's the dictionary example of something being overhyped.

This is a meaningless, white ball only (primarily t20) rivalry. 20 years of no tests between these two teams. Boring.
Great point, how can it be a rivalry without the highest and best form of cricket between the two?

India Pakistan rivalry will always remain but in the last couple of decades it’s more because of the political history between the two countries rather than cricketing match up. India has become far too dominant over Pakistan, so while Pakistan might win 10-15% of the games once in a while - including some knockout matches - the gulf between the teams is too wide.

People will always watch any India Pakistan game, even kabaddi, so it’s a rivalry between nations, not really a cricketing rivalry anymore.

Indian players earn 100x of Pakistan players.

Indian woman cricketers earn more than Pakistan's male cricketers.

Pakistan was beating India regularly in 70s, 80s and 90s when India was a poor nation. Now the financial gap is huge. 4-5 states of India has higher GDP individually than entire Pakistan.

The gap ll widen more and more in coming decades as India moves more into middle income and higher income brackets in the world.

There is a direct correlation between economy and sporting success of a country.

This is not entirely true. THey sure beat them in bilaterals. But when it comes to multinationals like World cup, benson & hedges only multinational back then, Asia cup record stands at India 7 Pakistan 2 No result 1. India won matches that mattered.

Moeen ali in his beard before wicket talked about batting technique. Agree with him about difference in batting technique is chalk and cheese between two teams. He has interacted with Indian coaches. So his comments have some value how superior the Indian batting technique is. Head position, feet movement. et
c etc everything looks poor for a pakistan batsman.

India vs Pakistan didn't happen till 1992 WCs. India won a world series 1985 final against Pakistan. India is not a big cricketing country in 80s despite a 100/1 odds 1983 WC win...

India beat them in rothman's asia cup inaugural one.. i think they won a few more. Pakistan was good in bilaterals.

Ok let's do it this way. 4-5 Pakistani players from 80, 90s era will get into Indian side of 80, 90s era quite easily. Which Pakistani player from yesterday's eleven ll get into Indian side? None.

That is the point. indi was a great TEAM. That is how they won tournaments in the 1980s. Everyone chipped in. No individuals. Even 1983 was won as a team. Everyone chipped in. INdia probably inadvertently introduced the value of bits and pieces players in LOIs in the 1983 world cup. Bowlers who can bat a bit, batsmen who can bowl a bit. I think apart from Vengsarkar, Gavaskar, Yashpal pretty much everyone could bowl. That is the same template teams are trying to fine tune in T20.
