What's new

Islamabad (177/6) defeat Karachi Kings (135/9) by 42 runs to win Match 14 of PSL 7

Shadab has been the man of the tournament so far.

He has been impactful with the bat, decisive with the ball, electric as always in the field and his captaincy has been spot on throughout.

I hope to see him deliver like this for Pakistan.

Kings need 150 runs in 88 balls.

Karachi needs to get a partnership here , try to win the game

Waqar showing his 80's mentality here. Recommending scoring boundary and getting off strike.

Brendan Mccullum in contrast advocated that when you score a boundary you go for the jugular and put extreme pressure on the bowler.

Waqar knows the conditions and the team better as in context of the game, if KK can hit a boundary an over they can must up a win. They're over reliant on Babar and Sharjeel and simply don't have any other players that can do what Brendan says.

On these types of pitches, Hasan can be successful, but he is a match loser on half-decent batting tracks.

This is becoming embarrassing.

Miracle needed by KK.

Heads need to roll in the khi kings franchise for this performance. Maybe getting rid of the franchise owner perhaps? I can't believe KK investors keep tolerating this mediocrity

Many fans were trolling Babar for his supposed "selfish" performance in the last match.

He gets out early today and the rest of the batting line up crashes down like a group of amateurs.

This Gregory guy. Who is he. Why is he in PSL everytime.

What a shameful display by Karachi. Despite it being played qt home.

Imad is seriously over rated. Cannot recall any match winning performance under pressure with the bat from him except for that 2019 ODI WC match against Afghanistan where he needed 2-3 lives.

Looks like they just picked a gora for the sake of it. Rashid Latif does not have complimentary things to say about his previous franchise, he literally accussed them of buttering to foreign players and officials. He wants the PCB to replace the franchise owners with someone else who is more committed to running the franchise and talent hunt competitions, academies for the whole year rather than just one month of the year before and during the PSL

He is not overrated but right now Pakistan should stick to Nawaz and Shadab , you cannot have three spinners in Australia

Taha seems to be a terrible pick by KK. Not that other are world beater in this side, but what is the point of having a player who can’t bat or bowl for you in a match. Might as well just play with 10 players.

Taha refusal to review the decision sums up the KK mindset in the camp

Kings need 90 runs in 30 balls.

Required rate 18 an over :)))

Karachi is making most games boring

What a shame this season is for karachi, it’s people and the cricket team

Haven’t won a single game in your home town

It’s so pathetic

What are these guys doing. I actually started a thread on this issue last week.

I had called this first game

Looks like they’re just showing up without any planning or any sort of strategy.

This will leave a huge question mark on Babar’s captaincy - just wait and see!

People will question whether Pakistan’s success is because of rizwan and shaheen doing well or is it because of Babar. Just watch.
This is how kohli’s downturn started.

I don’t understand why the most powerful man in Pakistan’s cricket and our captain and ODI player of the year doesn’t have the courage to say enough is enough and pick a decent team.

Shambolic effort that from KK.

Questions have to be asked.

Look like a disinterested team.

Everything starts with the man on the top. KK investors and sponsors need to withdraw their sponsorships if Salman Iqbal continues to run the franchise unprofessionally

Shadab Khan, United skipper and Player of the Match: Last two years I had lots of struggle with injuries and stuff like that. It really feels nice to do well in all the departments. As a captain you need to lead from the front and glad I am able to do that. The kind of bowlers we have, they are world class and the plan was to respond well and deliver under pressure. The team is doing well and that really matters the most to me more than my personal milestones.

Babar Azam, Kings' skipper: Unfortunately we lost all the games so far and hopefully we can turn it around and want to keep that belief and confidence going for the rest of the season. Whatever mistakes we did here we will try to avoid in Lahore. No partnerships with the bat tonight and nothing went to plan today.

Paul Stirling: It's been brilliant, good batting tracks here. I think that was the best performance, we spoke about complete team game two nights ago and we did it. It's fun to watch him (Hales) take on the bowlers and watch from the other end.

Karachi, 6 February 2022:

Karachi Kings suffered their fifth successive home defeat while Islamabad United notched up their third win in the HBL Pakistan Super League at the National Stadium on Sunday.

Alex Hales and Paul Stirling provided third 50 runs plus opening start as Islamabad United collected 177 for six in 20 overs. While Islamabad United scored 53 for no loss in their PowerPlay overs, Karachi Kings managed 35 for the loss of Sharjeel Khan and Babar Azam to eventually finish at 135 for nine and go down by 42 runs.

The result means Karachi Kings are winless at their halfway stage and staring in the eyes of an elimination. The 2020 champions are by no means out of the competition, but if previous events have anything to do with this year’s tournament, then they will have to win the remaining five matches in the Lahore-leg and also improve their net run-rate so that they remain in contention for a place in the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Islamabad United are on six points from five matches, Multan are at top of the table with five successive wins and Peshawar Zalmi are fourth with two wins and three loses.

Second-placed Lahore Qalandars will take on fifth-placed Quetta Gladiators in the 15th and last match of the Karachi-leg matches with the first ball to be bowled at 7.30pm PKT.

Other performers

Stirling, playing his last match for United before he joins Ireland on national duty, top-scored with 39 from 30 balls with three fours and two sixes, while Hales scored a 21-ball 30 with five fours. Their 66-run stand for the first wicket was the third time they had crossed the 50-run mark. Their other partnerships in the Karachi-leg remained 112 (v Zalmi), 22 (v Sultans), 55 (v Gladiators) and 16 (v Qalandars).

The middle-order thrived on the top-order’s start with Shadab Khan scoring a 19-ball 34 with four fours and a six and Colin Munro contributing a run-a-ball 33. In the death overs, Azam Khan hit two fours and six in a seven-ball 16 and Faheem Ashraf clobbered a six in his five-ball seven as United scored 47 in the last five overs to finish at 177 for six.

Kings, to secure their first win in the series, needed a solid and confident start. All they got were the run-outs of Sharjeel and Sahibzada Farhan, and Babar and Ian Cockbain missing straight balls as the 2020 champions slipped to 42 for four in eight overs.

Shadab then took four wickets in eight balls as Kings stuttered to 135 for nine with Mohammad Nabi providing some consolation with a 28-ball 47 not out with five fours and two sixes

Shadab, who is now the leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets besides his 186 runs at a strike-rate of over 182, had Lewis Gregory stumped, then had Imad Wasim caught in the deep, cleaned up Chris Jordan and was lucky to grab Mohammad Taha after television replays confirmed the ball would have missed the wickets.

Player of the match Shadab Khan: “I am delighted with my fitness and form as it is a reward for my efforts and hard work over the past two years. Awards are important for the confidence of any player and while I had been trying, this is my first player of the match award and I look forward to winning more.

“Batting first after winning the toss was a strategic decision as we have the firepower and wicket-taking bowlers who can defend any score. I am happy with came together to the party and everyone picked up wickets and contributed evenly in the team’s success.”

Scores in brief:

Islamabad United 177-6, 20 overs (Paul Stirling 39, Shadab Khan 34, Colin Munro 33, Alex Hales 30; Chris Jordon 2-36)

Karachi Kings 135-9, 20 overs (Mohammad Nabi 47 not out, Sahibzada Farhan 25, Shadab Khan 4-15)

Islamabad United have assembled one of the most fearsome batting line ups in T20 history. Trust me, on their day they can take down any side with the bat. It is a truly ferocious assembly of power hitters.

On the other hand Karachi have assembled a team of unknown no hopers and their two leaders ( babar and imad) can legitimately be accused of chickening out when the going gets tough.. There was only one way this was going to go.

funny thing is Munro couldnt even bat properly :))

the top order batsmen have been picked based on data. They always play a top order of foreigners, never local.

It's going to be a cathartic season for KK and there'll hopefully be some changes behind the scenes leading to changes in the player selection next year.

On the other hand, it's embarrassing and hilarious at the same time watching Sharjeel field.
