What's new

Islamabad United (204/4) beat Karachi Kings (201/5) by 6 wickets in Match 19 of PSL8

That's a good shot by Azam Khan.. good over by Amir too (apart from those 2 wides)..

Good day for Pak fans in both Azam and Imad getting runs...both should be given a go in the ODIs against the Kiwis

How was that Azam khan's fault? Faheem was not interested at first and Azam turned back.

Azam khan wasnt even looking at him and yes there was a second run and as a batsman you should always be looking at the ball and any opportunity to run one more.

Imad’s 2nd over was a dumb move especially when Shamsi was bowling fine!

Probably Azam Khan's best innings ever at the PSL.

I hope in future, there is a relegation system in PSL. Teams like KK and QG are just dragging down the standards of PSL. KK is a joke of a franchise.

Shadab Khan: We lost the toss but we wanted to bowl. Typical Pindi wicket. Very difficult to contain on this wicket. Our dressing room always stayed calm. Azam is dangerous against spinners. He mostly smashes me in nets. During the time-out, he told he will kill the game off. We wanted to play fearless. We will accept the failures. We might get all-out for 90 or 100. But we need to play smart cricket with fearless approach.

Azam Khan, Player of the Match: I think it is all about practice. I try to keep calm in the practice games back in Karachi. I will rate the Quetta innings higher. Basically, I was trying to ask Faheem to take singles. I wanted to take on Tabraiz. I was confident about Asif. He took out some pressure from me.

Imad Wasim: I think 200 was a very score. Azam played really well and took the game away from us. Our bowling in the last 5-6 games hasn't been great. Azam played really well and played all around the ground. You have to give credit to others sometimes. We just got to sit and talk. It has been 8 games and we haven't executed our plans. I am upset but it is cricket and life moves on.

Islamabad United set the record for their highest chase in the HBL Pakistan Super League as Azam Khan’s sparkling 72 not out off 41 (eight fours and four sixes) helped them roll over Karachi Kings’ 201 with six wickets and four balls spare at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on Friday. Never before had Islamabad United – the two-time champions – chased a target of 200 or more.

Azam entered the fray at the dismissal of Rassie van der Dussen in the eight over with 69 on the scorecard and Islamabad United needed him to showcase his extraordinary repertoire of strokes. He did exactly that after settling in and stitched a match-defining 125-run partnership with Faheem Ashraf, who made 41 off 32 (two sixes and one four) and mostly played a supporting act.

Islamabad United had a solid start to the run chase despite Mohammad Amir removing Colin Munro (11 off five) in the first over. Alex Hales smashed 34 off 16 and added 50 runs for the second wicket with van der Dussen before the former was bowled on the last ball of Powerplay by Aamer Yamin.

When Tabraiz Shamsi bowled van der Dussen two balls later, it rang alarm bells for Islamabad United, but Azam and Faheem negated the Shamsi and Shoaib Malik threat cautiously before launching a brilliant counterattack.

Karachi Kings were rescued and then dragged over 200 by yet another outstanding Imad Wasim innings. The Karachi Kings captain smoked 92 off 54, hitting 11 fours and two sixes, and added 99 runs with Muhammad Irfan Khan, who played a decent supporting hand with 20-ball 30. Over the course of this innings, Imad became only the second batter in the HBL PSL 8 to cross the 300-run mark.

Imad had to walk to the middle with five Powerplay balls remaining as Karachi Kings lost three wickets for 53. Firing cameo by Tayyab Tahir (19 off eight) and Adam Rossington’s 20 off 16 made sure Karachi Kings’ scored at a respectable run rate despite the fall of wickets in the first six overs.

Shoaib Malik was the only batter to fall in the middle overs when he was bowled by a beautiful Faheem delivery that nipped back into the right-hander and Islamabad United had to wait till the penultimate over for the next wicket and it came off a brilliant acrobatic effort by Hasan Ali at the boundary straight down the ground.

Irfan launched Tom Curran high into the night sky and the fast bowler caught the ball diving backwards, but such was his presence of mind that he relayed the catch to van der Dussen before coming into contact with the rope or crossing it.

Islamabad United now have four wins from six matches, while Karachi Kings have lost six of the eight.

Scores in brief:

Karachi Kings 201-5, 20 overs (Imad Wasim 92 not out, Muhammad Irfan Khan 30, Adam Rossington 20; Tom Curran 2-43)

Islamabad United 204-4, 19.2 overs (Azam Khan 72 not out, Faheem Ashraf 41, Alex Hales 34, Rassie van der Dussen 22)

Player of the match – Azam Khan (Islamabad United)

Van Dusen, Faheem Ashraf were struggling against the spinners but Azam Khan had other ideas. Totally destroyed KK's game plan to contain in the middle overs via spinners.

*Rossington reveals reason behind Kings defeat against United*

Rawalpindi 4 March 2023:

Karachi Kings’ wicketkeeper batter Adam Rossington coined his side’s inability to get wickets in the middle overs as the reason behind their close six-wicket defeat against Islamabad United in the 19th match of the Pakistan Super League.

Rossington, who played a crucial 20-run knock up the order, spoke to the media here and expressed his disappointment over the Kings’ six-wicket defeat against United before asserting that the game got away from his side in the wicketless middle period.

“It is disappointing obviously to lose another game on the bounce. I think we probably got to a par score and our captain played really well,” said Rossington.

“And then, a few early wickets got us into the game, I think it was just that middle period in which we couldn’t take wickets, that’s where the game got away from us and those two lads [Azam Khan and Faheem Ashraf] played really well and didn’t really give us a chance,” he maintained.

Rossington then went on to term Kings’ total a roundabout par after a slow start before asserting that the ordinary bowling cost them a crucial match.

“I think it was probably roundabout par from where we were especially, we lost early wickets and still took it to 202. Obviously, our captain played brilliantly again today to get us to what was probably a par score or maybe we could have added 10 more,” said Rossington.

“I think we’ve been pretty good on the hold with the bat so far, it’s just with the ball, other day we were a bit expensive at the death and today it was the middle period, not taking wickets. I think it’s one of the things that if you can take wickets and get new batters coming at the crease, it’s always easier to slow down the score,” he concluded.

It is worth mentioning that the Kings remained at the fifth position with four points in eight matches in the PSL 8 standings with a narrow six-wicket defeat against Islamabad United.

Kings’ skipper Imad’s brilliant knock of 92 runs off just 54 balls went in vain as Azam Khan’s quickfire 72 sealed the deal for the United.

Great innings from Azam. Imad also looking fit finally. Maybe he can talk some sense into our round friend. As for being ready for Pakistan. Won't last two minutes against a fit side like England or Oz.
