Zimbabwe’s remarkable 151-run win against Bangladesh in the 1st Test match of the two match series was their first Test victory since September 2013 and was also there first Test victory away from home since November 2001. The win, achieved in just 4 days, shocked Bangladesh cricket fans who, based on the visitors' overall record could have been forgiven for assuming that a victory was a foregone conclusion. It also sent a strong statement to the cricketing world which said that Zimbabwe’s days of being marked as pushovers could soon be coming to an end.

32-year-old Pakistan born Sikandar Raza played a pivotal role in this historic victory for Zimbabwe, scoring 44 runs and taking 6 wickets and in an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, described his side’s elation after a brilliant performance.

<img src="https://i.imgur.com/6f0hoKm.jpg" width="700">

“It was a brilliant win for us, more so because we had two debutants and that was a great experience for them, to be part of a winning side. This will do a world of good for the new players as when you are a part of a losing team, it does dent your confidence a bit. As for me, winning a Test match after 11 matches I have played for Zimbabwe is certainly exciting and humbling at the same time.”

Zimbabwe’s tour of Bangladesh did not start so promisingly as they were whitewashed by a supremely confident home-side in the 3-match ODI series. In Raza’s view, the visiting side may have been somewhat weakened by the absence of some key players but they were never lacking in confidence and the results could have been different if the tosses had been in their favour, “I joined the squad in Bangladesh and was genuinely worried that we would be really missing the services of Graeme Cremer who is by far our best bowler and one of the best in the world, in any form of the game. Of course, the presence of Sean Williams and myself did make some difference but in the ODI series we had the misfortune of losing important tosses. I am not using that as an excuse, but had we not batted second in the 2nd and 3rd ODIs, the score line may well have been different. But make no mistake, every time we put on our jersey, we don’t just go out there to make up the numbers, we go in to show that we can compete. Those days are behind us and now we want to win, and that is what we showed to the world when we won the first Test match.”

Zimbabwe’s poor record against international sides has been a source of concern to many observers of international cricket with many wondering if the side was good enough to compete in the toughest format of the game. However, as Sikandar explained, given the confidence and the positive mood in the Zimbabwe camp during the very tough tour of Bangladesh, the victory in the first Test should not have come as a surprise.

“Honestly speaking, a lot of us were carrying a lot of pressure on ourselves due to the issues of recent past and Bangladesh is a very tough place to tour as is. However, every time we sat down to talk between ourselves, the conversation was always about how to win games and how to beat Bangladesh. There was a real desire to win the games and be successful at an individual and collective level. We wanted to show the world that we could also win games if we were given the same opportunities to compete like other nations. Hopefully, this Test victory will turn things around for us.”

Sikandar Raza’s own form in recent games has been very encouraging and his presence in the side has been termed as crucial for Zimbabwe’s success which obviously has been source of great satisfaction for the cricketer. For Sikandar, his current form is a product of some hard work with the likes of Grant Flower and Lance Klusener as he explained.

“The basis of my current confidence was put in place by my interaction with Grant Flower. Before meeting him, I had very little idea of what cricket was all about. It was then the association with Lance Klusener which played a huge part in helping me to achieve better results for my country and myself. I remember speaking to him and saying that I did not agree with some of his recommendations regarding my batting. He told me to trust his judgement and whilst I may not get a chance to bat up the order where I could possibly score hundreds, I should look to finish games for Zimbabwe consistently and that would make me become a better cricketer. Once I started doing that, then I could start batting up the order and start scoring big in all formats of the game. I believe that his advice is now paying dividends.”

From an occasional bowler to the status of a genuine all-rounder, Sikandar Raza’s bowling abilities have been instrumental in giving his side an added advantage which saw him take 6 wickets in the first Test against Bangladesh and he credits this transformation to Heath Streak as he explained, “I always considered myself a part-time all-rounder but the belief in myself as a good bowling option really came from my interaction with Heath Streak who told Sean Williams and myself that if we could combine and give the team 10-15 overs, we could achieve better results for the side. For me, it's also about trying new things and not to be scared of being belted out of the park which is the kind of attitude that may have worked well for me.”

Whilst the Test series against Bangladesh may not be over yet, the fact is that Zimbabwe cricket has been dealt a shot in the arm with the side’s recent victory and this could mean better times ahead for the future of the game in the country.

“This Test victory has obviously done wonders for the game in Zimbabwe. This can be judged by the messages of congratulations we received from the Chairman, club cricketers, the net-bowlers who had helped us prepare for this series as well as the government ministers. This is a remarkable achievement for not just the team but the country as a whole. There should be no doubt about the fact that cricket is still big in Zimbabwe and its possible that we were losing a few supporters due to the poor results that we were achieving but it's victories like the one in the first Test against Bangladesh which have done a lot of good, I can assure you of that.”

The proliferation of Twenty20 leagues around the world has meant that cricket happens 12 months of the year which is great news for the fans of the game but plays an equally important role for cricketers from countries like Zimbabwe as Sikandar explained, “Twenty20 Leagues are very useful for Zimbabwean cricketers as we don’t have a busy international calendar which is probably why we are yet to cross that line into becoming world-class cricketers. Because of these gaps in our calendar between international assignments, these Twenty20 Leagues give us an opportunity to play cricket throughout the year and also to learn from other top-class cricketers. This is why leagues such as APL this year and BPL have really helped my cricket and hopefully there will be a few more options coming up in the future to play in such leagues. And it goes without saying that Twenty20 Leagues are also a great source of financial stability as Zimbabwe cricketers have very little international cricket, so we don’t have massive central contracts and match fees coming our way as is. So, playing in Twenty20 Leagues does help us as cricketers and put in good performances as that is one less thing to worry about.”

The fourth edition of the hugely successful Pakistan Super League will take place early next year. For a cricketer like Sikandar who has early childhood friends and family roots in Pakistan, the opportunity to play in such a premier Twenty20 tournament is one that he will accept with both hands.

“It would be great to be part of the Pakistan Super League and I can only hope that my good recent performances catch someone’s attention and open the door for my participation in the PSL. I understand that eight of the matches for the next edition will be played in Pakistan and as someone who has family and friends from Pakistan, it would be a great honour to play for one of the franchises in the PSL. I have had prior experience of the passion for the game in Pakistan during our visit in 2015 with the Zimbabwe team and to play in such an atmosphere again would be a fantastic experience for me.”

For a consummate professional like Sikandar Raza, any chance of challenging himself in tough situations and improving his skills by playing in top-class tournaments is one that he will not let go and playing in the Indian Premier League would be one such opportunity but he is aware that he has to keep himself focused on immediate goals and bigger opportunities will follow logically, “one can wish for many good things in life, however fantastic they maybe so playing in the Indian Premier League is another option that I would love to have. But, at the moment, my focus is to get myself a place in the UAE T20x and PSL tournaments and if I can get that to happen, and get noticed due to good performances and be included in the IPL, then that would be a great outcome,” he concluded.

Sikandar is one of the nicest and most motivated cricketers I have had the pleasure of speaking to. Speaks with passion and clearly wants to succeed for Zimbabwe and himself.

One of the most improved cricketers in the last year or two. Never would have thought that he would become such an integral part of the zim team when he started off however he really has impresses one and all. Has become a reasonably good spinner as well lately. Hallmark of a truly hard working cricketer.

Vastly improved cricketer who I believe would be a fantastic signing for any PSL team.

A good fielder, useful with the ball and competent with the bat.

Think he should be signed up. Him committing to play in Pak is obviously useful.

He would be a good pick for any franchise. Decent player of spin , bowls spin, and good fielder.

Would be a good pick imo.

Don’t know for sure. But I believe he can. Considering his age it wouldn’t be a viable move.

The PCB should rope him zimbabwe cricket board is not giving the respect he deserves and he is only getting wasted there.west indies tried to apply the same formula with jofra archer but couldnt succeed but our board can offer him a central contract and hopefully he can be part of our cricketting set up.

He is very happy to play for Zimbabwe now.

Handy all rounder. Would be a good player for any T20 team and it's a given he'd travel to Pakistan so hope someone signs him up.

Good addition by KK. Good batsman and can bowl a few overs if needed.

Also he will of course travel to Pakistan.

Good to see Sikandar visiting Pakistan - and looking forward to seeing him in PSL

Sikandar at the crease for the first time in PSL - Good luck to him in this tournament.

Doing well for Karachi Kings and seems to be enjoying himself

Good with the ball today and awful with the bat.

Zimbabwe's spinning all-rounder Sikander Raza took six wickets in the day, finishing with figures of 7/113 – his country's second-best in Tests in the 2nd Test vs Sri Lanka.

7 overs for 26 so far for Sikandar - done very well.

And the important wicket of Haris Sohail to his name now.

ZIMBABWE cricket all-rounder Sikandar Raza is excited he has survived a cancer scare.

Raza underwent a successful operation two weeks ago after a tumor was discovered in his right arm. The 34-year old, who is set to miss the current series against Pakistan, took to social media last night to expresses his joy and relief.

“I want to thank you all for your prayers.

Prayers certainly were answered and I’ve been cleared of tumor and cancer which is nothing short of a miracle.

I am short of words to express and show how grateful I am to you all for your prayers,” said Raza.

The all-rounder has received messages of comfort from across the world, with many wishing him a speedy recovery and a quick return to the field.

Raza was part of Zimbabwe’s squad on their last assignment against Afghanistan held in the United Arab Emirates.

But he is set to watch from the sidelines as his Zimbabwe teammates take on Pakistan in a series that begins in Harare today.

The Chevrons have put Pakistan to bat first after winning the toss ahead of the first T20I. Zimbabwe will engage Pakistan in three T20Is and two Tests.

The second T20I is on Friday while the final match has been scheduled for Sunday. All the games will be played behind closed doors at Harare Sports Club, with no spectators allowed in the stadium due to COVID-19 protocols.

The first Test match will be contested from April 29 to May 3 and the second Test is scheduled for May 7-11.

ZIMBABWE cricketer Sikandar Raza says he is responding well to medication after undergoing a successful operation on his arm earlier this month.

The all-rounder is recovering from the surgery he had two weeks ago after suffering a bone marrow infection. It was suspected to be cancerous but he has since been cleared of any serious illness after the surgery.

“It’s been 14 days after the surgery and rehab has started,” he tweeted on Friday morning.

“Wound healing nicely and body is responding well to the medications. Inshaallah, on the mend and be on the park soon. Thanks Physio (Travor) Wambe for all the help @ZimCricketv,” tweeted Raza.

The 35-year-old was left out of the recent series against Pakistan because of the operation. Raza was part of Zimbabwe’s squad that played against Afghanistan in United Arab Emirates two months ago.

But he is set for more weeks in the sidelines, as Zimbabwe Cricket discuss finer details against the Bangladesh Cricket Board for a possible tour next month.

Apart from national team duty, Raza is set for another dance in the Caribbean Premier League after he was retained by his club, Trinbago Knight Riders, for the 2021 edition.

Raza became the first Zimbabwean cricketer to feature in the tournament last year and he went on to cap the historic outing by winning the CPL title.

This year’s tournament is expected to get underway in St Kitts & Nevis on August 28, despite the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Raza is among the 13 players that have been retained by the Knight Riders. The side completed a perfect season in 2020, winning all 12 of their matches on their way to a fourth Hero CPL title.

Really great initiative by the Foreign Office, congrats to Sikandar to be part of the honours list.

Zimbabwe cricket team star Sikandar Raza will have an opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the world leading cricketers in the shortest format of the game after being signed up by the Khulna Tigers for the upcoming season of the Bangladesh Premier League.

The 35-year-old allrounder will be the country’s lone representative in the upcoming BPL which will take place between January 21 and February 18.

Raza took to social media to express his excitement ahead of the tournament.

Six teams Khulna Tigers, Chattogram Challengers, Dhaka, Fortune Barishal, Cumilla Victorians and Sylhet Sunrisers will feature in the tournament which will be played in three venues across Dhaka, Sylhet and Chattogram.

Raza will feature for the Khulna Tigers alongside

Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Men’s T20 International against Namibia at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo.

Raza was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.”

In addition to this, two demerit points have been added to Raza’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period, taking his cumulative demerit points to two.

The incident occurred in the 16th over of Zimbabwe’s innings when Raza was given out LBW. He questioned the decision by showing his bat to the umpire, used inappropriate words about the decision numerous times as he was leaving the field of play, and shouted his displeasure again as he entered the dressing room.

Raza admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Match Referee Andy Pycroft, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Iknow Chabi and Langton Rusere and third umpire Forster Mutizwa levelled the charges.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Amazing from Sikandar today vs Bangladesh, smashing an unbeaten 65 off just 26 balls.

Have always maintained he could have been a good no.5 for Pakistan. Is a very good offie as well.

Scored 135* (109)

Brilliant form.

Another superb innings today.

4 out of Sikandar Raza's last 5 scores:

117* (ODI)
135* (ODI)
62 (T20I)
65* (T20I)

In the form of his life. Great to see him and Zimbabwe on the winning end for a change.

Promoted to captain today. Hopefully doesn't affect his form

Good insight into what he was feeling because of health issues - great to see him back in action after what he went through on his health front.

Another brilliant innings (in vain!) 115(95) - almost won the game for his side!

Looks better than most of the current Pakistani batters in my opinion.

He deserved a win today. Well played non the less. If Raza keeps up his current form he can raise Zimbabwe cricket to its golden days in ODIs.

Speaking ahead of the game against Pakistan

“I am really looking forward to this game. We've had some very good games in the past against Pakistan. Now that we are on the board as well with the point as well, hopefully a win tomorrow can take us forward in the tournament"

“In my opinion Pakistan has probably one of the best attacks. I think it is certainly one of the best attacks in the tournament. England's got a very good attack as well as Australia and India. But I do think Pakistan has got the right mixture when it comes to seamers"

“Pakistan has always been a very strong bowling side. And, having said that, with Rizwan and Babar at the top as well and the way they have performed over the years, if I'm not mistaken, these two have the world record of the most number of runs scored as a partnership.

“So, I think Pakistan got the right mixture of cricketers when it comes to bowlers and batters to chase down or to defend any sort of total. So, it's quite important and exciting match and we are really looking forward to it together.”

“What will be, will be. I've done the work in the nets and leave the rest to Allah [Almighty] hands. I've done all I could to give myself a chance to do well. If I do well, Alhamdulillah [all praise is due to Allah Almighty]. If I don't do well still Alhamdulillah, [because] it's something that's out of my hand. What is in my hand is to work hard and I've done that"

Continues to perform for his side - what a player?!

Pakistan would wish to have a player like Sikandar in their team right now. A very good hitter and a decent bowler to go along with it. Could have been a perfect all rounder for Pakistan like Maxwell is for Australia.

Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza was arguably the pivotal player in his team’s shock but deserved win over Pakistan at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Thursday.

And Raza has credited a Ricky Ponting interview on the ICC website for inspiring his brilliant display in which he took three quick wickets at a crucial moment, including two in two balls, to blow through Pakistan’s middle order.

“I couldn’t sleep much last night, for me this game was playing over and over again, how we were going to bat,” Raza said. “I made a few notes and I was reading over them again and again, and I said I’m going to stick with this. For Zimbabweans a lot of the learning is on the job, we don’t get to play the top nations a lot.

“When I woke up a friend of mine sent me a message and said, ‘hey have you seen a clip on the ICC page? Before I ruin it for you maybe have a look.’

“That was Ricky Ponting talking about Zimbabwe and in particular me."

The clip in question saw Ponting tell the ICC how Raza had stood out to him right through Zimbabwe’s qualification campaign and the early rounds of the tournament.

And Raza revealed his family were brought to tears by the words of Ponting, and that the Australian’s remarks inspired him ahead of the Pakistan fixture.

“Some of my friends and family members messaged and they said they had a kind of tear in the eye,” Raza said. “For me, I had goosebumps – one of the greats of the game talking about Zimbabwe and in particular me.

“Not that I need an extra kick, but if I needed one that clip did the job for me. I wanted to stay calm but also pumped up for this game.”

In his video interview, ICC pundit and Australian legend Ponting explained why he had been so impressed by Raza and Zimbabwe.

“He's 36 years of age, but he’s playing with more youthful exuberance than that,” Ponting said in the video. “It looks like he’s 26 again, running around the pitch enjoying himself and leading from the front.

“He’s had an amazing couple of years in international cricket. It seems to me his level of maturity has gone through the roof. He’s standing up in pressure moments, which you need to do. When you start talking about World Cups, players’ names and reputations are forged on how you perform in big games.

“He stood up in the qualifiers, basically single-handedly got Zimbabwe into the World Cup in the first place, and the two games they’ve won in this World Cup so far he’s been Man of the Match in both.”

Fired up by those words, Raza stood up once again to put his side in a position to secure a famous win, one of the T20 World Cup’s biggest-ever results.

Sikandar is now a Qalandar

The allrounder returns to the PSL this season, and will play for Lahore!

He has improved a lot.

He is now one of the best all-rounders in the world. But, he is 37. Not much left probably.

Isn't he going to play IPL too in the upcoming season ? Decent player, his stocks have massively risen since the last T20 WC. Much better batsman than the likes of Haider Ali, Asif Ali and even contributes with the ball.

That may be true but even then you don't tend to see players with this kind of commitment. I don't think he is someone who needs the money so he must have a very strong relationship with this team.

This shouldn't be allowed. There is a major conflict of interest here. Technically his test match could still be ongoing.

This guy loves his cricket. Impressive to see someone with such a hunger for the game even at 39 years of age.

How is it a conflict of interest? Also, the test match is over. That's why he is here.
A player may not be fully motivated to try to save the follow on or to bat longer to prolong the match.

It is a similar situation when players jump from league to league. I believe a cool off period should be mandated.

Strange way of looking at this situation. Can't say I agree.

If that was the case he did not need to bat for 68 balls yesterday. Could have just got out early.

Wow what dedication from this guy watched him live at Nottingham tuned in to find out he landed in Lahore to play to my boy what a guy

I am not talking about Sikander specifically bro just making a general point about potential conflicts of interests and how these should be better managed - especially with the money floating around the game.

Tbf I don’t understand these rules

If the guy left the tournament, and LQ have signed up replacements such as Shakib, Miraz, Rajapaksa…how does he still get to play after leaving a second time?

PSL management keep doing these family friendly moves. There is no strictness!

PZ manipulated the rules too to make Luke Wood a permanent member
