Haider Ali speaking to the media today:

On absence of Lockie Ferguson

"It is important that we prepare to face all New Zealand bowlers in this series; We have seen before that its not necessarily the best bowler who takes all the wickets; A lot of times, good bowlers go wicketless but a part-timer gets the wickets; Our focus has always been on all New Zealand bowlers and not just on Lockie Ferguson"

About any funny incident during isolation

"During this time, it was difficult to keep track of time so we would be getting up at odd hours for our training in our rooms; I had a habit of jogging in my room after Fajr prayers and Shaheen Shah Afridi's room was below mine; He complained to me later that he hadn't slept all night but when he did start to fall asleep in early morning, he was woken by sound of me training in my room"

What changes do you want to make to your game?

"I need to give myself more time on the crease, as its not enough to just hit 2-3 boundaries in an over and then be dismissed on the next ball which only helps the bowler; The idea is to hit 1-2 boundaries and then take a single to help rotate the strike as well which will help the team and also my wicket will be preserved"

Very disappointed with the questions asked in the presser, first question was basically “we see young New Zealand players doing well but our youngsters always fail in New Zealand, how much pressure is there on you to cement your place in the team?”

After he gave a composed answer to this, the second journalist asked him the exact same question again.

Why are these leading questions allowed to be asked?

Third question: “you’re a T20 specialist and were picked on the basis of T20 performances, do you have it in you to play the longer formats?”

Fourth question: “it’s a green top, and our batsmen always have difficulty there. How much pressure is on Haider Ali to perform?”

You are right - same question was asked of Misbah and really no idea the purpose of it.

This is why we didnt mention those questions in post #1

Impressed with Haider during the presser..he is a confident and sensible individual

Indeed, I realized this when I read the original post. Sounds crazy to have to thank someone for this, but thank you for being well-intentioned!

Why don't PCB's media remove the accreditations of those journos ?

If you keep inviting them to your pressers these daft questions will keep being asked.

That should be the case but, then they will try to make big deal out of it and will probably start bashing PCB’s management based upon that. Still I agree that there should be certain filtration of journos who are invited.

The term “Freedom of media” is exploited to ask and say almost anything, that too without much accountability all around the world.

Pcb cannot do jack they are very powerful especially just look at the amount pcb spend on media for foreign tours and building vip stand in stadium for these lifafa mafia

There is no control on quality of questions and all are friends of PCB.

Sensible comment from Haider regarding rotating the strike.

Let's see if he can actually do it though.

Just hope he doesnt get into 2 minds when playing as it could hurt his natural style of play.

If we are to avoid another decade of being also rans at 6 and 7th ranking we need HA, Abdullah and at least 3 or 4 others to join Babar and score runs consistently. They need a combination of hard work, intelligence and luck to be successful.

Glad that he knows his own areas to work on, and hopefully, we can see him perform even better in this series. He's an exceptional talent, and we need to make sure that he is training correctly and performing to the best of his ability.

Atleast he recognises his areas of improvement but i hope his head doesnt get confused he should stil play in his aggressive way

These journalist need to be taught a lesson they ask some stupid questions they should be removed if they cant ask resonable questions

Haider Ali is a supremely talented player. If he can work on his weaknesses and be sensible in his shot selection, he will be a brilliant player.

This series will be a test for him. Even if he fails , we should stick by him as other than Babar Azam I haven't seen Pakistan produce a more talented batter in the last 4/5 years.

This kid has the right basics.

But we've seen it before too many times - bright prospect, starts well, shows promise and then starts to go off the rails.

I just hope Haider keeps his focus on cricket. Only time will tell.

Good responses from Haider. Very excited about his progression as a batsman.

Good comments. Rotating the strike is crucial in LO Cricket. Haider has the shots, but sometimes he can get carried away. A balance is required - take calculated risks and rotate the strike. Haider is good enough to implement this.

Earlier I was not sure if Haider has what it takes to be a great player but after reading his response to the questions, I am assured he will be a Ross Taylor level batsman. Most Pakistani players are unable to understand their own game but Haider not only understood his weakness but is accepting of his weakness. I would be very surprised if Haider isn't in the top 5 batsmen in the world in 3-4 years.

I think he will be better than taylor maybe similar stats to rohit sharma with some breathtaking innings

Haider has the opportunity to stamp himself in the absence of Babar now in T20s. Easily the 2nd best batsman in the side. Hoping for the best.

Mainly shot selection. He needs to know when to attack and when to see off a bowler. Also would like to see him improve his offside game . Needs more first class cricket to improve in all aspects.

Yeah i agree to some extend about off side game but definitely agree with shot selection

Looking at his past innings, he looks like someone who is an extremely nervous starter. I would be more keen to see if he starts differently and more confidently. Most if his issues are more mental than skills.

That is very important point. Once he starts to get the attention and gets pampered by the fans, can he stay grounded ....

To be honest, I’ve always thought it’s the opposite. He often goes for a boundary on the first ball.

These are usually self explanatory things. You play the game according to the situation, if you come with this mind set of the approach it is not good. Sometimes hitting 2-3 4’s and hitting out is the way to go and sometimes you have to play out full maiden overs, some times you have to go for a 6-4 every ball.

As a top order bat his role is to give solid starts and attacking starts depending on the situation.
Let’s hope he has the cricket acumen. Good luck to him

Yeah, don't know what he's talking about. Haider so far has been a lot like Umar Akmal. Come out, hita really nice 25 and then get out.

Needs more work Haider - frustrating to see him lose his wicket like he did today

Concerned with Haider's batting. He was struggling with the bounce, and started to pre-meditate his shots. Looked downright ordinary today.

Stop expecting miracles from youngsters who have just come onto the scene extremely high expectations for a mediocre team Chadda Saab

I think succumbed to the pressure. Too much was riding on his shoulders after Hafeez got out. Looked uncomfortable at the crease and felt overawed by the situation. He's 5 T2OI games in, and the expectations shored high for him afterwards.

Played like a rabbit caught in the headlights today. His technique too against pace and bounce needs a lot of work

He gets squared up very easily and all this hit and giggle t20 stuff is exacerbating that flaw.

His initial batting stance is too wide and then he commits too heavily on the front foot. He needs to look at Babar's technique to develop that initial neutral stance from where he can transfer weight on both feet depending upon the length of delivery. Otherwise he will struggle against bounce in Southern hemisphere.

Yup

No wonder he struggles against short ball.

he just hits mostly on leg side, and a couple of lifts. May be better in tests because what i saw in U-19 in batting against India, have not seen that kind of technique yet from him. Trying to score fast may be..
but a good prospect.

It is a problem with 99% batsman in Pakistan domestic cricket. They commit on front foot despite whatever the length of the delivery is. It can work in SC but not in NZ/Aus/SA.

Shadab did decently because he isn't one of the batsman that I mentioned. He plays well on both feet, he didn't have a problem against pace

He is young and will learn but why is he trying to slog almost every ball in cow corner? When I saw Haidar Ali bat in U19 WC, he looked much more orthodox and assured. Younis Khan should work with him and ask him to play more proper cricket. Talent is there but execution is required.

There are going to be a lot of poor days mixed in with some brilliant days, until his batting matures.

This tour will be a huge learning exercise for him.

People going after This poor kid who just arrived at international cricket like there is a pakistani batsman who can play om bouncy wickets

Pakistan domestic pitches have improved but are still too easy paced. Need to introduce more bounce.

Exactly my thoughts bro..
He had got the orthodox shots.. may be he is told to go for it. But I think he should take some time even in t20s. He has orthodox shots. Hopefully matures more

ABD averaged 15.79 with a SR of 66 in his first 14 ODI matches. This one of many stats just to put things out in perspective (Not comparing anybody here).

If one follows career of any young batsmen, there are a lot of things which develop over time. Failure in few innings shouldn't be a problem as far as player shows growth in his game and adaptation of international cricket.

People talking about Umer Akmal should realize he didnt show growth rather deterioration in his game over the years. Expensive gameplay doesnt mean someone is another Umer Akmal in making. There are numerous examples of players who grew and developed into top class batsmen despite them being pretty aggressive but, there is no magic wand and developing a player takes time.

Haider so far has showed good attitude towards the game, if that starts to deteriorate than that would be a concern. Failure in few innings now or even in future at this stage of his career isnt.

Thankyou for being so elaborate in your thought. What would we do without your tremendous analytical ability and farsight.

Well everyone wants him to do well including me. He is not even 10% of the player we have seen during his U19 days. Don't know how this approach is going to shape his career. Had he been in any other team, he would have got world class coaching to develop his career. But allas it is Pakistan, we never develop our player like other nations do.

I wouldn't expect anythimg from him right now.
He is an investment. Let him play and get some experience. He will repay the faith in the years to come. Until then, patience is the word for everyone.

Zeeshan Malik is another one who camps on back foot and can do well in southern hemisphere.

Haider was surprised by the bounce today. Pak should have played more practice games against NZ A or a President's eleven.

Even a more experienced Hafeez didn't saw it coming today. Poor preparation in general and the fact that we are poor against bounce in most conditions.

Yes very early days but today he was clear struggling with the bounce..Our players need to be educated about the conditions. All the top order were clueless i dont know how we managed to make 150

Another reason why younger players cannot flourish in the international system. Every shot of every damn inning is criticized. Fgs, he is 20 years old. Just let him play his cricket.

Give him some time hes only 20 years old he will have bad days and good days.all the batesman struggled against the bounce.people need to cut the stick

He needs to tighten his technique now - YK needs to help him.

Rashid Latif today on Game on hai was talking the same. It is a problem that needs to be solved at youth level

Worst part is: You give them 10 games, and they will repeat the mistake 10 times. The stubborn ability to not worry about your shortcomings, and improve them is only found among Pakistan players whether young or old.

Shoaib Akhtar on TV:

“Even if someone has told you to play attacking cricket, it does not mean that you go out and play reckless shots,”

“Look at Haider Ali, he smacked a six and tried to repeat his shot rather than placing the ball into gaps or play a different shot like down the group or on the up.”

11, 8, 3 are his scores in this series - not good at all!

I disagree, T20s are not the format to judge a youngster especially if their natural role is as aggressor. These 11,8,3 scores are par for some of the best aggressors in the world, let alone a recent debutant playing in completely foreign conditions.

First two matches, he made the mistake of playing across the line. It seems he reined in those natural instincts today - looked a lot more assured at the crease. Needs support from the management, he’s already showed what he’s capable of in that 50 against England.

The disastrous three games Haider has had in NZ doesn't make him any less or any more talented! He should remind himself of that . . and stay away from Misbah (and co) telling him he needs to change his game style!

This is a test for Haider . . he can fade away or learn!

Most folks with a decent knowledge of the game picked up the fact that Haider struggles with bounce/short stuff . . because of his natural style, he gets himself into a position to attack those balls . . when they come quicker than he is used to and bounce more, he gets into all kinds of awkward positions.

Haider isn't going to play test cricket but he is going to remain in NZ! Get a Hasnain, Musa, Wahab, etc. to bowl to him day in, day out!

Also, a lot depends on our dressing room! If this were Mickey, he'd be placing bets . . who are the players who will deliver in 2 3 years . . With Misbah, there's no direction so not sure what he is doing!

Very young in his career. Let the guy play some games. Experience at international level can only come by getting matches under his belt. Hopefully he will respond well going forward.

I'm afraid but he's on path to become next Imran Nazir. He plays some great shots like Naxir & then throw his wicket.

Forget his batting, I’m more worried about this guys fielding. Really disappointing to see a young cricketer be so poor in the field. Fumbles galore in the outfield and always has a confused look on his face when he’s out there fielding.
