What's new

"It's not enough to just hit 2-3 boundaries in an over and then be dismissed" : Haider Ali

Have been saying this for over a year, and today's dismissal showed why.

Was nearly dismmised in the same fashion in the first game. He needs to work hard. Disappointed that he won't play red ball cricket this season we are hampering his progress by making him play too many t20s and it's not helping.

Yes, the t20's are really hurting his progress and exacerbating his flaws.

He also needs to work on the short ball as well. I hope we have some red ball practice games aginst South Africa other he would have gone a year without playing red ball cricket. I really wish we had mickey now to help him and Abdullah shafique.

Haider is undercooked. Technique needs improvement, needs to stay side on and look to hit down the ground

Mickey would have licked his lips with the talent we have right now.
He made significantly lesser talented players into serious commodities.

It's criminal he has gone the full season without any 4 day games really sets him back by a year in his development

Exactly. I would never forgive mani, wasim or whoever didn't renew his contract and gave us shameless misbah

Was always going to be a tough tour for him. He needs to play more first class cricket to improve. Also needs to work with a professional batting coach as Misbah doesn't have a clue.

To be fair to him today he was a little unlucky that was just really good fielding.

Given his natural game is to hit i wonder how much he's really benefitting coaching wise from Younis and Misbah :13:

We probably need to consider having someone in the backroom who can help tailor Haider towards his strengths.

In my view he plays every game for Pakistan for the foreseeable future, he is clearly worth investing in.

Seems to have a technical issue gets in a awful squared up position tryin to work good length balls to leg

Really needs to play some fc and work on his technique

3, 8 and 11 in the T20I series - ouch.

Well Younis Khan, over to you. Earn your salary. Here's a young batsman who needs your help on technical issues, patience and his temperament.

Not a good series for Haider, but he needs to be given a long rope. For t20s, at least he needs to play in the WT20 in India.

Not a good series but he will come back strong.needs to play alot more domestic games.

Don’t think Younis Khan is the right coach for Haidar Ali.

Haidar is an aggressive player, YK isn’t.

If anything, a player like Shahid Afridi would be perfect for him, Afridi may have been a bit reckless but he knew how to set himself for the big shot, he knew how to use the crease, how to create angles and find gaps.

Ohh bhai...nhin...bilqul nahin.

Technique wise. Afridi was ahead of his time, he would be perfect for him, just watch the innings in SA where he made 88, he played every shot in the book. Watch how he set himself to hit big.

You are trying to convert him into a hitter.
He needs to look at a guy like Rohit or Ab and be a full rounded batsman.
You dont want him to ignore his defence by becoming a baseball style hitter which Afridi trained for in the latter half of his career.

Gets squared up way too easy.

I said this a while ago as well that his technique is poor against the new ball.

It's not just the squared up part, he tries to clear everything in the wrong place. Southee bowls one outside off and he tries to hit it on the leg side. He's clearly in all sorts at the moment, and we need him to develop proper cricketing shots like straight drives, cut shots, and a whole arsenal of flicks so that he can at least take singles during the powerplay.

His mindset at the moment of hitting everything with power isn't working, and also, he leans too far back when playing some of these shots as well. New Zealand played him into a good trap by not giving anything on the leg side, and Haider truly struggled against that.

He needs some of Babar's strokes from the back foot and needs to also improve his off-side game. Hitting straight down the ground is also something to work on, because it's more about timing as opposed to power.

Pakistan should do what they should have done with Umar Akmal early on - send him back to the domestics.

They can ill afford to teach youngsters who are not yet ready with technique or temperament to learn their craft in international matches while the team loses key games.

Give him a year away from senior team, then bring back slowly - through the ranks. Both Haider and Pakistan cricket will be better off for it.

You don't want him to become tullaybaaz.

Saw a clip where Younis Khan was pointing out the importance of top (left) hand in batting to Haider. He can't be bottom handed while opening the innings and Younis was spot on. He needs to work on his footwork as well.

Looked good on 51(26) as did the Shaheens vs Northern Knights but just doesnt seem to have the ability to finish things off!

Haider has a few years until he’s international cricket ready. Dumb move by Misbah and co to fast track him.,,,(in my humble opinion)

He’s saying this as if this is some new revelation which he realized recently

95 from 87 balls from Haider Ali today in the Pakistan One-Day Cup opening the innings for Northern.

He has got some impressive natural skills as he showed again against KPK in Pakistan cup. Just needs to keep working on his game, rely on shots which he is more confident with and are high percentage.

Liked the way he batted after the 50. He seriously needs to throw away the ugly slogs to legside and stop pre meditating. Never used to play like this in u19 level. It all started with t20s. Hopefully after a 1 year or so of games under his belt he will be more polished will know his game more.

Yes, hopefully he will start to get better as he plays more and becomes more mature. A lot of positives are there in terms of his overall attitude towards the game at this age, just needs to maintain that and keep his head down.

I am concerned that his game isnt growing. I hope he isnt one of those low IQ guys.

I think its to early to judge with just one complete FC season and very few white ball matches and months at international level. I would be worried if his game doesn’t mature in next 2-3 years.

Great players are great self reflectors.
And a self reflecting individual can improve in even 3 months.
I have backed him all the way, but It has been a year now and he is playing the same way. No improvement in his approach or technique.

Quite a few good players in last couple of decades struggled a bit in their initial few years with mediocre records but, became top players few years into international cricket. Self reflection is something which also improves and matures with time if a player is willing to self reflect.

Nobody can predict what he will become in few years but, I believe its too early to judge him as of now. If some other players would have been judged in a similar fashion in international cricket during their initial few years then some great players would have been lost to world cricket.

We as fans need to realize that it takes time to develop players. Some of our young players just dont have even enough domestic matches under their belts. I agree, that his game play hasnt been refined in few months he has played international cricket but, then again we have seen countless good players not showing the growth within months.

Will have to wait and see how he goes. I understand that its natural to be apprehensive about every young talent considering the way some of the players in the past decade have gone but, it would be unfair to look everyone from the same magnifying glass and stereotype in my opinion.

Completely agreed if anything he has regressed. I am personally getting sick and tired of his approach and i backed him when i saw him play, it was different Haider Ali. Never played with this approach in u19 days.

Even Kamran Akmal had a go at his approach in the PSL draft.

In addition to his issues against short balls, his hands are too tight for an opener due to which he doesn't rotate strike as often resulting in higher dot ball percentage. He must be sent to M Yousaf.

Yes we can hope he improves as we can't afford losing him. No doubt hes talanted but needs to starts maturing now.

He needs to pace himself more and take out the reckless shots. He needs to craft the art of building a innings which he is. He must also look to improve his judgement.

Sorry to say, but he doesn’t have a back foot. Every single one of his pull shots has been played on the front foot, with his quick hands getting the job done. There’s no back and across to cover the line of the ball, and as long as that issue isn’t sorted, I doubt he will succeed at the highest level.

But it’s also surprising that this guy has been in the system for the past 2-3 years and this issue hasn’t been addressed or solved, highlights the domestic scene in Pakistan for you!

He’s begun pacing his innings better. Taking more singles and playing correct strokes (though he still plays 2-3 tulla shots per innings).

Watch his innings against KPK from day before yesterday, you’ll see what I mean. He’s very good.

Needs to work on the pull shot and the cut shot.majority of his shots are on the front foot

I watched his full innings. Agreed he was a bit more patient but he needs to completely eliminate these tulla shots. Also pulling off the front foot may work here in domestics but not in international or against top teams. He also needs to stop pre meditating due to which he misses out on balls which he can put away. Most importantly he needs to get side on was watching his first class innings he was vetter at the crease then.

I am sure coaches must be had a word with hm regarding his approach even babar mentioned it in the Zimbabwe. So it time he calms downs a bit.

Haider Ali speaking to the media:

To questions, young batting sensation Haider Ali said the practice sessions for the T20 series were of great value for him as NCA batting coach Muhammad Yousaf had given valuable tips to the batsmen to do well without being under pressure in high-voltage games.

On fans’ expectations from Haider Ali, he said, “I try my best to come up to the expectations of the fans and emulate the feats of Babar Azam”, adding that the team wanted to beat proteas 3-0 in the upcoming T20 series.

He said as a batsman he felt less pressure on home soil as compared with the away tours, adding that knowledge of the home-grounds and playing conditions gave him more confidence as a batsman.

He said as a batsman he tries to give his best on the field but performance is in the hands of God, adding that he was mentally prepared to open with Babar Azam during the T20s in Lahore.

“I am prepared to open the innings with Babar Azam as I have played as an opener in the ICC U-19 World Cup and there is no question of any pressure”, he said.

Pakistan’s star batsman Haider Ali, while talking at a virtual press conference on Tuesday, revealed the advice given to him by legendary former batsman Mohammad Yousaf which was to occupy the crease without adding pressure early and compensating during the end with big shots.

The youngster stated that the players had learned a lot from the presence of legends such as Saqlain Mushtaq and Mohammad Yousaf in the side.

“Our practice sessions have been really good. We have learned a lot from Yousaf bhai and Saqlain bhai. We have learned from Yousaf bhai on how to develop a good temperament, how to score runs off good bowling and how to rotate strike along with many other things. It has been a great learning experience. We will try to learn more from them as time goes on,” Haider said.

“I have been playing my natural game. I have realised after talking to Yousaf bhai that standing at the crease would get me runs. I can hit the big shots and I was told to not take too much pressure and occupy the crease and later recover by hitting the big shots. We always try to give our 100 per cent. The rest is in the hands of Allah. Our task is to give our best for the team and perform wherever we are needed,” he added.

The power-hitter revealed that the Men in Green would be looking to win the T20I series three-nil in the same vein that they won the Test series against South Africa.

“The way we have won the Test series, we will be trying to win the T20 series three-nil. We lost the New Zealand series but we will try to win the next series and continue to improve in the future,” he said.

“My performances have brought a lot of expectations from me and I try to live up to those expectations. I try to be available and score runs wherever the team needs me. I will be trying my level best to help my team win,” he added.

The 20-year-old claimed that he was ready to open for the Pakistan side in the upcoming T20I series against South Africa.

“I am mentally satisfied. I have been talking to the coaches and support staff. I have no problems playing at any position for my team. I am ready to open for our side. I had been opening for my under-19 team. One down and opening does not have many differences. I am mentally ready for the spot. Every player wants to be the man of the series at the end. I will also try my best to achieve it and give my all for the side,” he concluded.

Pakistan won the recently concluded Test series against South Africa two-nil and will now move towards the T20I leg of the series which includes three fixtures that will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on February 11, 13 and 14 respectively.

If this kid can just play more cricketing shots, he will start contending for places.

MoYo is perfect to work with him, especially in the off season which should give them ample amount of time until PAK’s next outing.

I remember listening or reading something from MoYo about Umar Akmal a few years ago.

He said something along the lines that when Akmal broke on the scene, he had a great eye but no off-side game.

Five years later he commented that Akmal had hardly grown as a player. He was still deficient on the off-side and had trouble rotating strike.

Haider needs to figure out whether he wants to be Umar or Babar.

Just as Babar needs to figure out if he wants to be remembered as a talented batsman who scored aesthetically pleasing 6000/7000 runs for PAK or as PAK’s highest run getting in Tests which he is capable of challenging for.

Still can't progress past the type of batsman that hits 2 or 3 boundaries in an over and gets out.

No game plan or strike rotation, just see-ball, hit-ball, hopefully not caught. Needs more domestic experience, or to just come in the 15th over and do his see-ball hit-ball routine.

Waste lots of ball in blocking and get out to compensate those dots. He needs to learn how to rotate strike and hit intelligently.

Haider's wicket:

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 45.283%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/sgpoy7" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Total runs today in the 1st T20I versus South Africa - 21
18 of those runs came from 3 balls
The other 13 balls he faced he scored 3 runs

Strange innings.

He’s clearly got all the talent and ability in the world. You can see how cleanly he strikes the ball that he’s a special talent. Needs to get some work done on his strike rotation and knowing which specific balls to hit and which to let go. Ideally, we should get him as many sessions with Mohammad Yousuf as we can to polish him as a batsman. But he needs to be persisted with, worst thing for him right now would be if he gets dropped from the team.

He wont get dropped

He’s started to frustrate me a bit , he needs to really focus on building his innings, you can be a hitter and still be mature and disciplined, not just focus on flashy knocks which will cause to end up averaging about 20.00

Hoping to see some signs of improvement from Haider. If all he can do is slog, why is he at #3 and not #7?

Hard hands at every ball.

Deliveries that he could work around with soft hands for a single, he is hitting hard to mid on and mid off.

Something to work on.

More work needed on shot selection and field placings awareness.

If you want to hit the ball in the air on a regular basis then you have to know where the fielders are.

Rinse and repeat from the first T20I. Haider goes for 10 from 11 balls:

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 45.283%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/8yln6e" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Hopefully, this is the end is of this mediocre player along with Talat. These two belong in Mickey Mouse cricket.

Who do you propose takes his place? Umar Akmal?

Haider is an automatic selection and that says it all about the sorry state of our t20 side right now.

One word to describe his batting at the moment - frustrating.

The lad has ability, he has a wide selection of shots, he has power, he has skills, but he just lacks shot awareness and where the field is set.

He likes to hit the ball in the air on the leg side and the South Africans are onto this and are setting the field accordingly. He needs to think about his shots, where the field is set and the scores will come.

And yet you keep repeating it. How difficult is it to understand. Yet you get out the same way you did in the last match.

These guys lack in match awareness, skills, body language, confidence, communication and every thing needed for an international sportsperson

The way he will learn this is by playing first class cricket.

The thing is that Haider is the best amongst all our T20 hacks. He is still young. I would stick with him.

Both the shots he played were defonitely on he actually tried to time the ball instead of slogging.if he had slogged it proberly would have gone all the way

I don’t know about match awareness.

The kid certainly doesn’t lack PR skills. He knows that he must say the right thing in public even if he does the opposite of it on the field.

That is just the problem with you Haider!

Pakistan isn't able to produce a finished product and the product comes as a faulty item into the international arena where these things can't be fixed quickly enough.

Remind me a lot of Umar Akmal. Ton of talent, stroke making ability, power, but lacks game awareness.

He's fell right into the trap at deep square leg. Really elementary stuff

Given what we have in the cupboard, I'm tempted to stick with him for a bit longer. It's clear that he has so much ability but it just boils my blood how he doesn't have the awareness required.

I'm hoping he can play a good knock tomorrow but we have to polish him becuase he's the best young batsman we have right now

Doesnt seem to be one that is lesrning from his mistakes

I hope hes given more chances but he really needs to knuckle down n start to think about what hes doing

The concerning part is that the younger you go (hoping to be hungry, confident, talented, willing to work, succeed), the more extreme brainless/timid variations you're getting. Either you're an over-confident hack or you're extremely under-confident.

Off-topic: However, this is very much like how the Pakistani culture is back home for those who are aware. The discipline scene is quite poor, and short-cut scene is at an all time high. Just the other month, there was bhangra at Pakistan being named in the top countries with highest rate of free-lancing. This later turns out that the making online assignments for school/college kids and selling them for money is a thriving business back home, whilst calling it free-lancing.

Our youth, relatively speaking is embarrassing sorry to say, and cricket is no different. In this day and age, when your 20 year olds don't have any communication skills and cannot put a sentence together then that says everything you need to know.

Haider Ali moves up the order to open instead of Babar. Very interesting move

What is this guy doing? Blind slogging is for the number 7 and 8 batsmen. Maybe he should be there instead

Poor stuff from Haider. Shades of Kuldeep to Babar.

His dismissal against Shamsi today looked like a batsman who has never played against a left-arm chinaman bowler.

The gap between bat and pad was nothing short of embarrassing.

Another poor innings from Haider.

He hasn't done anything to justify the hype. He has actually gotten worse with time. His technique is regressing and he is becoming a slogger. Wonder what is YK getting paid for?

So many technical deficiencies have crept into his game.
He needs some serious time at a professional high performance center somewhere. Not the farce that is the Nca.

Just never looks in. I think like a lot of Pakistani batsmen he wants to play certain shots when he feels like it rather than according to the ball. Maybe he should be thinking about playing proper cricket shots and making a score rather than hitting big sixes.
