”We also have other series lined up but in between, we have some time and they can go at that point and play in the LPL,” he added.

Bangladesh’s all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar have registered for the IPL.

The LPL 2021 is scheduled to take place from July 30 to August 22 this year. At the same time, Australia will visit Bangladesh for a five-match T20 series beginning August 2 to 8 at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.

Bangladesh will also host New Zealand and England after the Australia series as they look to prepare for ICC T20 World Cup in November-December.

Meanwhile, BCB has sent letters to the national contract probables to know about their availability for 2021-22. The Cricket Board is yet to disclose the names of players who will get central contracts. As many as 22 cricketers have received the letter out of which only 18 will get a central contract.

‘‘All the cricketers are ready to take part across format and they have informed national duty is their first preference. They have said that if they are picked and if they can manage to have time to play in LPL they will play there but not at the expense of skipping any national duty,” said Akram Khan was quoted as saying.

Sources say that Lanka Premier (LPL)'s second edition which was to be held at the end of the month will now be rescheduled to November due to the non-availability of foreign players' commitments to other leagues.

Pakistan's sudden planning of KPL puts SLC in a spot

The sudden scheduling of the Kashmir Premier League (KPL) has put Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in a spot as the Lankan board is now deliberating on whether they should go ahead with the second season of the Lankan Premier League (LPL) without some of the top Pakistan stars who were to be a part of the T20 league.

Speaking to ANI, SLC Vice President Ravin Wickramaratne said the sudden decision to host the KPL has now forced the Lankan board to meet and decide if the LPL should be held even if the Pakistan players are absent.

"We haven't decided anything as of yet, we will be deciding today. You will have to wait patiently. It is not PCB I think, it is the Pakistan government (who have decided on hosting the KPL). The SLC CEO is in talks, but you will have to be patient. We are discussing whether to go ahead or postponed the LPL, that decision the management will take. The KPL was not in the schedule," he said.

As per the website of the Kashmir Premier League, it is a T20 league having credentials from the Pakistan Cricket Board among others. KPL will see six teams -- including Rawalakot Hawks, Kotli Lions, Mirpur Royals, Muzaffarabad Tigers, Overseas Warriors, and Bagh Stallions - fighting it out from August 6 to 17 in Muzaffarabad.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had in May announced that the second edition of the Lanka Premier League would be held from July 30 to August 22. The first edition of the LPL, which is Sri Lanka's topmost domestic T20 league, with an international flavour, was initiated last year and was held at the MRICS, Hambantota, with the participation of five teams.

The first edition of Lanka Premier League commenced on November 26 last year. Jaffna Stallions won the inaugural edition of the tournament as the side defeated Galle Gladiators in the final on December 16.

Lanka Premier League Rescheduled

The Lanka Premier League 2021, which was expected to commence on the 29th July 2021, has been rescheduled to be held from 19th November to 12th December 2021.

The Governing Council of the Lanka Premier League is of the view that rescheduling the tournament will enable more players from leading cricket-playing nations to take part in the league.

The Council made this decision after assessing that at least one similar premier league and several international tours will be played among the cricketing nations during August 2021, during the period, which the LPL 2nd edition was expected to
be played.

The Innovative Production Group, the LPL Event Rights Holder, supports the decision of the SLC.

Colombo: Galle Gladiators fell short by a whisker to win the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League going down to eventual winner Jaffna Stallions in a closely fought final. But, owner of Galle Gladiators Mr. Nadeem Omar feels this will be the year of the Gladiators as they prepare to bounce back even stronger in the second edition of the premier T20 League in the island nation.

In the first season, the team was led by Pakistani star all- rounder Shahid Afridi in the early phase of the tournament and was later taken over by Sri Lanka’s Bhanuka Rajapaksa after Afridi had to leave the tournament midway due to some personal reasons. Former legendary pacer Wasim Akram was the team mentor.

Mr. Omar also owns the Quetta Gladiators franchise in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He is a Pakistani business executive and former scrabble player who is known nationally and internationally for his contributions to sports. He has been the president of the Pakistan Scrabble Association since October 2020 and the president of the Karachi City Cricket Association since May 2018. He is also the president of the Pakistan Cricket Club. The core motivation of the Galle franchise is to develop the game in the southern province of Sri Lanka.

“The upcoming season of LPL is very crucial for us especially after the way we fought back last season. We saw some remarkable performances from young players like Azam Khan, Dhananjaya Lakshan and Sahan Arachchige. They have set a benchmark of excellence for the younger talents who will come into the team. Coming into the next edition, we want to put up a better fight and clinch the trophy. We had great support from the fans around Galle, though they weren’t allowed into the stadiums but we saw their support online through various platforms. We urge them to extend their support in similar fashion and help us grow,” said Mr. Omar while highlighting the focus for the upcoming edition of the premier T20 League in the Island Nation.

Mr Anil Mohan, who is the Founder and CEO of Dubai-based production giant The IPG Group, the official promoter of LPL, added, “Gladiators set LPL on fire with their remarkable comeback in the first edition. But we are all set to witness a new chapter in its cricketing history with LPL becoming bigger and better. I am confident that the Galle team's performance will help the League grow in stature.”

Mr. Jawad Ghulam Rasool, Managing Partner & CCMO of The IPG Group added: “Last season of LPL saw Mr. Nadeem Omar’s team, the Galle Gladiators give us some nail-biting performances. Mr. Nadeem Omar will always hold a special relationship with us as the first franchise to be announced that kick started the league. I look forward to some thrilling moments in this year’s LPL which will no doubt be welcomed by sports enthusiasts not just in Pakistan but the world over. We wish Mr. Nadeem ‘Mr. Cricket of Pakistan’ and the Gladiators good luck for the second season of the Lanka Premier League”

The inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) which was played in a bio-secure bubble at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota from November 26 till December 16, 2020, reached a cumulative audience of 557 million people through TV, digital-social space, and traditional media outlets. Sponsors enjoyed a media evaluation (visibility) of $54.5m and title sponsor MY11CIRCLE enjoyed a ROI of 9.85x. Winner of the first edition of LPL Jaffna Stallions tops the valuation chart with $3.98m followed by Galle Gladiators ($3.82m), Dambulla Kings ($3.54m) Colombo Kings ($3.44m) and Kandy Tuskers ($3.19m).

The LPL matches which were telecast live by Sky Sports, Sony Sports Network, Geo, PTV, and Willow TV in Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, UK, US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand saw 155 million people tuning in to catch live action. On social media, it achieved a reach of 218 million and LPL found 133478 mentions as the league came alive with each and every match with some scintillating performances on the ground.

Lyca Groups bought Jaffna Stallions ( New Name :Jaffna Kings )

Winner of the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) Jaffna Stallions have a new owner as Sri Lanka-born British entrepreneur, Allirajah Subaskaran, enters the second season of the premier T20 tournament of the Island Nation by acquiring the Jaffna-based franchise in the tournament.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to make following clarification pertaining to a recent news article published under the title of “LPL Transparency at stake over questionable deals” and with a lead of “were proper protocols followed in naming new franchise owner for Jaffna and US$ 10 Mn TV rights deal?”

At the outset, SLC wishes to enlighten the media and the public on the business model of the Lanka Premier League that is being followed by Sri Lanka Cricket for the next 5 years from 2020, with the aim of giving you a clear understanding of the content described herein. The said model has been adopted after taking into consideration the models followed by other leagues, such as the Indian Premiere League and the Big Bash League.

Pursuant to meticulous analysis and varied tender processes carried out by the SLC, and with a view to making the LPL a highly sought after and profitable Premier League Tournament in Sri Lanka, It was decided to award the entire commercial
rights of the LPL inclusive of franchise ownership rights ('Event Rights') to a third party through an open tender process whilst retaining control and management rights by the SLC.

Accordingly, the Event Rights of the Lanka Premier League was awarded to the Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG), a UAE-based private-owned Sports Management Company (‘Event Rights Holder’), for a period of 5 years commencing
from the year 2020.

In terms of the agreement, which SLC entered into with IPG pursuant to the Tender Process, the commercial rights such as International Media Rights, Ground Rights, Terrestrial TV Rights, Terrestrial Digital Rights, Franchisee/Team Ownership Rights
etc. have been granted to the said Event rights Holder with the option of sub-licensing to third parties in order to maximize its commercial elements and subject to the terms specified in the agreement.

Being a privately owned company with a view to maximizing its profitability for the investment therein made, the Event rights holder is permitted to exploit the rights granted herein strictly subject to the screening, control and or supervision of ICC and the SLC. It should be noted that in terms of the provisions of the said agreement, the SLC is entitled to receive a share (proportionate percentage)
from some of the rights granted to the event Rights Holder when the same is being exploited by the event Rights Holder.

As such, we wish to state that the content of the said article which claims that the dealings in relation to the LPL had not followed the proper protocols is factually wrong and in fact, the rights which claim to have been sold unjustly are the rightsowned by IPG pursuant to an open Tender Process carried out by the SLC and therefore, the exploitation and or sub-licensing of which to a third party are the right
exclusively held by IPG subject to the terms in the agreement.

Therefore, we categorically deny any statement which claims that SLC had not followed the protocols in granting of the rights herein and SLC shall have no interest to interfere and inquire into whom such rights are being sublicensed by the IPG in so far as such dealings are done in compliance with the terms of the agreement entered into with SLC and are made with the persons/firms and or organizations that had not been excluded by ICC.

At a time when global sports and other activities are threatened by the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic, the support from media institutions are considered to be paramount which helps to brand the LPL as the elite event in the World Cricketing
calendar.

Thus, SLC sincerely requests all journalists to join hand and work towards enhancing the Sri Lanka Cricket and LPL brand and seek clarification from SLC prior to publishing any information that would unduly and adversely affect the Country, the Sport of Cricket and the brand image of the SLC and the LPL.

The player draft of the 2nd Edition of the Lanka Premier League 2021, which was scheduled to be held tomorrow, has been rescheduled and will take place on the 09th November 2021.

This decision was taken to accommodate a request made by several ‘Franchise Owners,’ owing to the fact that the draft coincides with the ‘Diwali’ festival season, which is currently being celebrated.

STATEMENT PERTAINING TO THE ‘PLAYER DRAFT’ OF THE LANKA PREMIER LEAGUE 2021

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that the Player Draft of the Lanka Premier League 2021 was
conducted with utmost transparency with clear processes and procedures set in place on the criteria
of selection of the players and also clear guidelines are given on the same to the franchise holders.

For this year’s edition, the Lanka Premier League 2021 received 673 applications from foreign players
expressing their interest to be included in the player draft, whilst 358 local Cricketers, (including
players who have entered into central and domestic contracts with the SLC) who were keen to
represent the Domestic presence at the LPL was included in the ‘Player Draft’ following
recommendations made by the Major Clubs with the consent of such Players.

Accordingly, a total of 1031 players (local and overseas) went into the draft, whilst the ‘Right’ of
selecting the suitable and desirous players for the 20 member squads, was solely vested with the
‘Franchise Owners’ subject to compliance with the guidelines set by the SLC.

As such, Sri Lanka Cricket is pleased with the overall process, as the said Player Draft was carried
out as planned in a timely manner and with the participation of all stakeholders, ensuring the highest
level of transparency.

However, despite the overall success, Sri Lanka Cricket, which is the governing body of the LPL has
observed that franchise owners have opted not to select certain national players and some young
players who play excellent domestic cricket and are considered potential future stars.

Considering the above deficiency and in the interest of the game of Cricket in Sri Lanka, the
Governing Council of the Lanka Premier League 2021 decided to forward the names of 10 deserving
players, (including players who have entered into central and domestic contracts with the SLC)
who missed out during the Player draft, to all the franchise owners, and make it ‘mandatory’ for each
franchise to select two players out of the given 10 into their squad, thus expanding the squad strength
from 20 to 22.

As such, Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that along with the Event Rights Partner of Lanka
Premier League [‘Innovative Production Group (IPG)] all required steps will be taken to ensure that
the Lanka Premier League 2021, of which the inaugural edition was a huge success story, will be
continued on an even bigger scale, whilst ensuring that the league is run with integrity as its topmost
consideration.

Jaffna Kings leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been in superb form in the ongoing season of Lanka Premier League 2021, having already picked five wickets in three games. But the Sri Lanka international, hopes to get wicket of one of his favourite batsmen Virat Kohli one day.

"I would love to get my favourite cricketer Virat Kohli’s wicket someday. I also want to pick Babar Azam and Glenn Maxwell's wickets as well," Hasaranga said when asked to name the players who he wishes to dismiss in his career

Hasaranga was the leading wicket-taker at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021, with 16 scalps in 8 games, despite Sri Lanka not reaching past the group stages. On being asked about the reasons behind his personal success, Hasaranga said that he always try to do the best for his team.

"When I am bowling, I always try to take wickets. When I am in the national team, I always try to do my best for the team. That's why I am successful," he said.

Confident Hasaranga does not want feel the pressure of media and fans comparing him with former Sri Lanka legends Muttiah Muralitharan and Rangana Herath.

"I am always motivated to perform. I don't feel any pressure. I don't want to be the next Muralitharan or the next Herath. I want to be the first Hasaranga," he said.

With the rise of T20 format, it is largely believed that cricket is becoming a batsman's game. But Hasaranga explained how the spinners can prove to be match winners in the shortest format.

"Leg spinners can do anything. Because in T20 cricket, batsmen are going to hit big shots. We have a lot of variations. Sometimes, we can get hit for 40-50 runs in a match. But in the next match, we find a way to get back and pick 4-5 wickets. Leg-spinners can win matches," he added.

The 24-year-old bowler went on to credit Lanka Premier League for the rise of Sri Lanka Cricket in the past few years.

"Last time, we saw a lot of youngsters doing a good job in Lanka Premier League. In this kind of tournament, we always get a lot of good players. That is why Sri Lanka Cricket is better than last few years. These kinds of tournaments are always good for the growth of sport in a nation," Hasaranga signed off.

Angelo Mathews returned from an injury to lead Colombo Stars to a much-needed 41-run win over Galle Gladiators with a 57-ball 73 in Lanka Premier League 2021 match on Sunday at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

After electing to bat first, Colombo Stars captain Mathews opened the innings and helped his team in posting a solid total of 162/7 in the rain-curtailed 18-over match. He hit 8 boundaries and 3 sixes in his innings.

Colombo Stars innings was also bolstered by Dinesh Chandimal who made 36 off 14, smashing 4 fours and 2 sixes in his innings.

In reply, Galle Gladiators were bowled out for 121 in 16.5 overs with Stars pacer Naveen ul-Haq claiming 3 for 27, suffering their second successive defeat in two days. Kusal Mendis scored 64 runs in 39 balls, with 7 fours and a six in the chase. But he found no support from the remainder of the Galle Gladiators' batting order.

Seekuge Prasanna, who took 2 for 23, and Ravi Rampaul, who picked 2 for 34, also contributed with the ball for Colombo Stars as they picked up only their second win of the season.

Jaffna Kings fast bowler Wahab Riaz, who has already picked five wickets in three games at the ongoing Lanka Premier League 2021 season, went on to name his picks for top fast bowlers and batsmen in the world at the moment, and he included India pacer Jasprit Bumrah and opening batsman Rohit Sharma in the list.

In a recent interaction, Riaz was asked to name some of the best fast bowlers in the world at the moment, and he went on to praise Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mitchell Starc.

"They have a lot of capability. They read the game and execute their plans really well. If they require yorkers, or if they require slow ones, they would read the wicket and bowl accordingly," Riaz said.

The Pakistan speedster was also asked to name the batsmen he finds difficult to bowl to and he picked AB de Villiers' and also explained the reasons behind the same.

"There are a lot of such players like Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam who are hard to bowl to. But one player I have always been afraid to bowl to is AB de Villiers. He always knows what is coming next from me. He reads the game well, and always plays well against me," Riaz added.

The Pakistan speedster further went on to describe his Jaffna Kings teammate Wanindu Hasaranga as the best leg-spinner in the world right now and credited him for the team's success this season so far.

"If I am honest, Wanindu Hasaranga is one of the best leg-spinners right now in the world. Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana have been really good this season for our team. They really set the tones in the powerplay overs by taking wickets and restricting the opposition," Riaz said.

Kings have won 4 out of 5 games so far in the season and are currently lying at the top of the table. The defending champions Kings had lost their first game against Galle Gladiators but have bounced back superbly since then.

"We learned from the mistakes we made in our first match. Now we are trying to cover all those basics. Everybody is ticking every box and that's why we are winning as a team," Riaz said.

Riaz further went on to praise the Kings management for packing up a stacked squad this season with plenty of options on the bench.

"Hats off to Jaffna coach and captain who have selected this team knowing the conditions and what combinations this team needs. The good thing is that everybody is responding well to all of them," Riaz said.

Speaking on the team's game plan to defend the title, Riaz said that they are making plans game by game and not thinking far ahead.

"You have to play good cricket throughout the tournament. You cannot say you are the favourites in the tournament as that can put you on the back foot. I can see the hunger in boys to win. We are thinking about one game at a time. We are not thinking about championship or too far ahead," he said.

The veteran pacer further went on to praise the Lanka Premier League tournament for giving a chance to youngsters to learn from some of the best cricketers in the world.

"It's great exposure for youngsters as they will learn to play against some of the best players in the world. They will share the dressing room with senior players like Thisara Perera, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Perera, and gain experience. That is the exposure you require to make an impact at the international stage," he signed off.

Thisara Perera's Jaffna Kings continued their king-sized domination of the Lanka Premier League 2021 by demolishing Dambulla Giants by 7 wickets to pick up their fifth successive triumph on Monday at the R. Premadasa Stadium. With the win, the Jaffna Kings confirmed a spot in the playoffs.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Kings bundled out Dambulla Giants for 69 with Chaturanga de Silva coming to the party, picking up 4 wickets for 16 runs.

Perera's decision to bowl on a spinning track proved to be the correct one as off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana gave early blows to Dambulla Giants, dismissing Niroshan Dickwella and Sohaib Maqsood in the first over itself. In his next over, Theekshana dismissed Nuwanidu Fernando for 2 runs, forcing the Giants on the backfoot.

Afterward, De Silva’s magical spell began, as he cleaned up the Giants' middle-order in quick succession. Philip Salt, who was the only one who showed a bit of resistance, was dismissed by star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for 23 runs as the Giants were bowled out in just 14.1 overs, setting up a meager total for the Kings to chase.

In the chase, Jaffna Kings lost Upul Tharanga early on, but the side made a surprise call, promoting Wanindu Hasaranga to bat at No.3. The pinch-hitter rose to be the darling of the spectators as he bludgeoned an 18-ball 37 to set the tempo in that victory charge.

Upfront, Avishka Fernando infused the razor edge as he belted the bowling, scoring 22 runs in 17 balls with six and 2 fours in his innings, making a short work of the target. The game came to a close as hard-hitting opening batsman Fernando slammed the second delivery of the ninth over by Ramesh Mendis over mid-wicket for a six, finishing off the chase in style.

Kandy Warriors (Playing XI): Kennar Lewis, Charith Asalanka, Ahmed Shehzad, Tom Moores(w), Angelo Perera(c), Kamindu Mendis, Ravi Bopara, Nimesh Vimukthi, Sachindu Colombage, Binura Fernando, Lahiru Kumara

Colombo Stars (Playing XI): Pathum Nissanka, Angelo Mathews(c), Ashan Priyanjan, Seekkuge Prasanna, Sherfane Rutherford, Dinesh Chandimal(w), Dhananjaya de Silva, Thikshila de Silva, Dushmantha Chameera, Naveen-ul-Haq, Ravi Rampaul

Angelo Perera | Kandy Warriors captain: We would have loved to bowl as well. We needed somebody finishing the games. Ravi (Bopara) has done that. Hopefully the top-order will fire.

Angelo Mathews | Colombo Stars captain: We will have a bowl first because the pitch was under covers. It looks a bit moist too. He (Kusal) will take 3 odd weeks to recover, so I will stay at the top. Two changes for us.

Seekkuge Prasanna smashed unbeaten-32 off 6 balls, as he hammered 5 sixes to guide Colombo Stars to a nail-biting 5-wicket win over Kandy Warriors in the Lanka Premier League 2021 match at R. Premadasa Stadium on Tuesday. Chasing 147, the Stars found themselves in a spot of bother after Sachindu Colombage dismissed Dinesh Chandimal in the fifth ball of the 18th over.

Needing 37 to win from 13 balls, with five wickets in hands, Prasanna came to the crease to hammer his first six on the first ball he faced from Colombage.

In the next over from Binura Fernando, Prasanna once again struck a six on the penultimate ball, before running a double on the final ball of the over to put Sherfane Rutherford on strike at the start of the last over.

Lahiru Kumara was given the responsibility to bowl the last over for the Warriors, and Rutherford did well to run a single on the first ball to bring Prasanna back to strike. The right-handed batsman struck three consecutive sixes to help his team pick up the win with two balls to spare.

Earlier, Colombo Stars captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and elected to bowl. Kandy Warriors openers Kennar Lewis and Charith Asalanka stitched a solid 71-run stand for the first wicket. But after Asalanka was dismissed by Dushmantha Chameera in the first ball of the 9th over for 28, the Warriors lost the plot and went on to lose wickets in quick succession.

Chameera starred with the ball for Stars, picking up four wickets for 35 runs in his four overs, while the rest of the bowling unit chipped in with a wicket each. Apart from Lewis' 62, no other Kandy batsman could get going, and they could only muster 146/9 in 20 overs.

Colombo Stars started the chase poorly as Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for a duck on the third ball. Stars kept losing wickets at key moments and found themselves reeling at 110/5 in 17.5 overs. But Prasanna's heroics saved the day for Colombo Stars as they picked up two important points to go third in the table.

Jaffna Kings stars Shoaib Malik and Wahab Riaz sat down for a frank conversation on the sidelines of the Lanka Premier League 2021 season where the two veterans Pakistan cricketers revealed interesting and hilarious tidbits about each other. Riaz and Malik participated in the "spray challenge" as they answered a range of questions about each other.

Shoaib Malik, during the fun chat, went on to reveal why the Indian tennis star and his wife, Sania Mirza, does not like to cook for him. The two players were asked about who is fussier about food, and Malik said: "Ask this question to my wife. Then you get a detailed answer. That's why she does not know how to cook and she orders from outside. Because I am fussy."

When asked about who was lazier among the two players, Malik was quick to spray water on Riaz. "Because Riaz is a fast bowler, and he needs a lot of energy. Maybe that's why he is lazier," he said.

Malik also credited the Pakistan fast bowler to have a messier kitbag among the two. "He is an allrounder. He carries more bats than a batsman carries," Malik said, laughing.

Wahab went on to say that Malik has a better sense of humour among the two, but also cheekily added: "At times, he says somethings, and he laughs and nobody responds."

When asked who is a bigger foodie, it was revealed by the two that Malik eats 6 times a day. "Even at 3 am in the morning, there will be a club sandwich in his room," Riaz revealed.

"I may eat six times a day, but I take small meals," Malik responded.

Wahab Riaz also described Shoaib Malik as the bigger "party animal" among the two and revealed why their plans to party in Karachi this year could not come to fruition.

"He committed to me that he and I will be in Karachi, and we will have a lot of fun. But thank god, his name was in the T20 World Cup squad. He made a lot of plans with me. But nothing paid off," Wahab said, laughing.

Meanwhile, Jaffna Kings have already reached the playoffs in Lanka Premier League 2021 with a win over Dambulla Giants on Monday. They will face off against Colombo Stars on Thursday.
