The Kandy Warriors recorded their second victory in the Lanka Premier League after defeating Dambulla Giants by 6 wickets on Thursday. After restricting the Giants to 130/9 in their 20 overs, the Kandy Warriors chased down their target in 19.2 overs.

Ravi Bopara played a fantastic innings of 59* runs from 50 balls, laced with 3 boundaries and 2 sixes. Opening batter Kennar Lewis and Angelo Perera chipped in with scores of 27 and 29* respectively. The Giants dismissed Charith Asalanka, Minod Bhanuka and Kamindu Mendis for not too many runs on the board, however, the 60-run partnership between Bopara and Perera ensured that the Warriors walked off the field as winners.

Earlier, the Dambulla Giants couldn't find a way to get going with the bat as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Ramesh Mendis was the only highlight of Giants' batting card with an innings of 41 runs from 28 balls. He struck 2 boundaries and 1 six during his innings. Binura Fernando and Al-Amin Hossain were the pick of the bowlers for the Warriors with figures of 3/22 and 3/32 respectively.

Mickey Arthur, the outgoing Head Coach of the Sri Lankan team under whom the Sri Lankan team showed remarkable progress, credited the Lanka Premier League for playing an impressive role in the growth of Sri Lankan cricket.

Arthur guided the Island nation brilliantly in the recently-concluded ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021, wherein the entire team and especially the likes of Charith Asalanka, Lahiru Kumara and Wanindu Hasaranga impressed the entire world with their performances. All of the three players showcased their talent in Season 1 of the Lanka Premier League and have continued to take massive strides as cricketers in Season 2 of the Lanka Premier League as well.

"I think the Lanka Premier League is such a good tournament, particularly for the younger players, because it gives them an opportunity to play under pressure. There's a crowd and there's a good TV audience. You can go and play in the nets a million times, but you can't replicate this atmosphere at the ground. The Lanka Premier League has to allow young players to develop, the franchises have to be very competitive against each other, but the young players must be put under pressure and they have to come through that," said the former Sri Lanka Head Coach.

Arthur added that one more team can be added to the Lanka Premier League. Currently, the competition has five franchises - Jaffna Kings, Galle Gladiators, Dambulla Giants, Colombo Stars and Kandy Warriors.

"I think there's room for one more team in the competition. There's still a lot of good players that didn't get picked. As long as the competition stays good and sound and we get good overseas players like we have had, I think the tournament will just get better and better," said the South African.

When asked about his feelings about leaving the Sri Lankan camp, he said, "The one thing I take a lot of pride in is that I think I have left the team at a far better state than I found it and any coach would like to do that. I think if they stay consistent, which I am sure the selection panel will and if the players are backed, I tell you the country will get some talent."

Arthur also added that the Sri Lankan Test team have the skill level to perform away from home, "I think our Test team is in a really good shape. I think it's really well led by Dimuth Karunaratne. There are a lot of experienced players there. We have developed a really good crop of fast bowlers. Dushmantha Chameera is world class now, Suranga Lakmal is the Asian Anderson, you've got Vishwa Fernando, who bowls left-arm pace and there are so many other good young quicks. I think Sri Lanka can hold their own away from home as well. The batters have good techniques to play in overseas conditions."

The Colombo Stars registered their fourth victory in the Lanka Premier League after defeating Kandy Warriors by 58 runs on Friday. After posting a total of 182/6 in their 20 overs, the Stars bowled out the Warriors for 124 in 17 overs.

The Kandy Warriors couldn't find the momentum during their chase as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Jeffrey Vandersay set the tone with the ball for the Stars by picking up the wickets of the opening batters Kennar Lewis and Minod Bhanuka in the third over.

Thereafter, the Warriors failed to string big partnerships. Ravi Bopara was the only highlight of the Warriors' batting card with an innings of 47 runs from 31 balls. He struck 5 fours and 1 six. Vandersay was the pick of the bowlers for the Stars with magnificent figures of 6/25.

Earlier, Kusal Perera smashed 58 runs from 38 balls at the top of the order for the Colombo Stars. Perera smacked 6 fours and 2 sixes during his innings. Dhananjaya de Silva and Dinesh Chandimal also chipped in with scores of 40 and 44*. Chandimal provided the final impetus to Colombo Stars' innings with a knock laced with 3 boundaries and 2 sixes.

Mohammad Amir, who has helped the Galle Gladiators book a place in the final of the Lanka Premier League, expressed that the IPG Group and Sri Lanka Cricket have done a terrific job by organizing the T20 tournament. The Galle Gladiators will take on the Jaffna Kings in the Final at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota on Thursday.

"The IPG Group and Sri Lanka Cricket are doing a wonderful job. This tournament is very important for Sri Lankan cricket. They are doing well. Most of the youngsters are coming in and chipping in with their performances in this tournament. The future of Sri Lankan cricket is very bright," said Amir.

The fast bowler added the team will try its best to win the final, "When you get the momentum in the right time, it helps you a lot. Last time we lost the final, but this time we will try our best to win the final. We have a good momentum now, so let's see what happens."

Amir also expressed that he always looks for wickets with the new ball, "I was struggling a little bit in the beginning because I was coming back from Covid, but now I am getting better as I have been bowling consistently. As a new ball bowler, I always look for wickets, even if I go for a few boundaries. We are getting more bounce here and the length ball is also working for us. And with the new ball, you have to try and swing the ball."

The Galle Gladiators Head Coach Umar Gul also commended the IPG Group and Sri Lanka Cricket for providing a platform for youngsters, "The IPG Group and Sri Lanka Cricket are doing a great job. However, the Lanka Premier League is not only important for the Sri Lankan cricketers, but also for all the youngsters from around the world. They will learn something from here. It is always useful if one shares a dressing room with experienced players."

When asked about the overall performance of the team in LPL 2021, Gul said, "I am very happy with the way the team has performed. After winning our first match against Jaffna Kings, we got the momentum from there. We lost some close matches in between but we always ensured that the dressing room atmosphere is good. I am happy with the team's performance in all three departments of the game. Hopefully, we will win the final."

Jaffna Kings were crowned as the champions of Lanka Premier League 2021 season after defeating Galle Gladiators by 23 runs in a high-scoring finale at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota on Thursday. Avishka Fernando, who smashed 63 runs off 41 balls, and Wanindu Hasaranga, who made a big dent in Galle Gladiators run chase, by picking 2 wickets for 30 in his four overs, starred in the encounter for the Kings.

Chasing 202, Danushka Gunathilaka gave Gladiators a brisk start as he smashed 7 fours and 3 sixes to score 54 runs in 21 balls at a strike rate of 257.14. Seeing the pacers getting hit for plenty of boundaries, Jaffna Kings captain Thisara Perera handed the ball to his trusted spinner Hasaranga, who dismissed Gunathilaka, and also got the wicket of dangerous Ben Dunk for a golden duck in the same over.

After Mohammad Hafeez got run out for 10 in the 7th over by Chaturanga de Silva, Jaffna Kings further stamped their authority on the match.

With required run rate climbing, Gladiators captain Bhanuka Rajapaksa went for a slog sweep off Maheesh Theekshana in the 11th over, but he mistimed his shot, and was caught by Hasaranga at deep-mid wicket for 14. Kusal Mendis, who appeared to be Gladiators' one ray of hope, was run out by Perera for 39 after a big mix-up in the middle.

Gladiators continued to lose wickets in quick succession, and eventually could only muster 178/9 in 20 overs, falling short by 23 runs.

Earlier, Jaffna Kings captain Thisara Perera's call to bat after winning the toss proved to be the correct one with openers Avishka Fernando and Rahmanullah Gurbaz giving their side a flying start. The duo added 56 runs in 5.2 overs before the latter was dismissed by Galle Gladiators spinner Samit Patel. Fernando went on to complete his half century, but Nuwan Thushara dismissed him with a slower one for 63 runs.

Fernando tried to chip the ball over deep-mid wicket, but he was deceived by the pace, and Danushka Gunathilaka picked an easy catch.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore also went on to score his first fifty of Lanka Premier League 2021 season, while Shoaib Malik (23 runs off 11 balls) and Perera (17 runs off 9 balls) added crucial runs in the death overs.

Kohler-Cadmore remained unbeaten on 57 off 41 balls as he helped Kings post a mammoth total of 201/3 in 20 overs, setting a target of 202 for Galle Gladiators to chase. Gunathilaka's fireworks at the start of the chase was not enough for Gladiators and Jaffna Kings won the match easily to lay claim to the prestigious trophy.

The Player of the Season trophy was awarded to Avishka Fernando, who was also named as the man of the match in the final, for his innings of 63 runs in 41 balls. Overall, he scored 249 runs in 9 games in the tournament at an average of 31.12 at a strike rate of 152.76. The Emerging Player of the Season trophy was awarded to Janith Liyanage. The Strongest Player of the Season title was awarded to the trophy-winning captain of Jaffna Kings, Thisara Perera.
