Captain Jason Holder has become the first Windies player in 45 years to top the list of all-rounders in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings after slamming an unbeaten double-century that helped script a memorable 381-run win over England in the first Test in Bridgetown.

Sir Garfield Sobers was at the top last in March 1974 and Holder has now emulated him following his 202 not out off 229 balls in the second innings in Bridgetown, which is the third highest score by a number eight batsman in Test history after the Pakistan pair of Wasim Akram (257 not out) and Imtiaz Ahmed (209).

Holder, who was associated in an unbeaten seventh-wicket partnership of 295 with Shane Dowrich (116 not out), leapfrogged Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan and India’s Ravindra Jadeja to grab the number one spot for the first time in his career. Holder has also moved up the batting rankings to take a career-best 33rd position, after gaining 25 places.

Dowrich has moved up to a career-best 47th position among batsmen, having also scored 81 in the first innings of the match. Others to benefit in the update, that also took into account performances in the first Test in Brisbane which Australia won against Sri Lanka by an innings and 40 runs, included Shimron Hetmyer (up 11 places to 40th) among batsmen and Kemar Roach (up five places to 20th) and Roston Chase (up 14 places to 41st) among bowlers. For England, Ben Stokes has moved up one place to 29thamong bowlers.

For Australia, Travis Head has moved up 17 places to 43rd after scoring 84 runs in the Test while fast bowler Pat Cummins’s player of the match effort of a 10-wicket match haul has helped him move up one slot to grab a career-best third position among bowlers. His rating points are the highest for an Australia bowler since Ryan Harris tallied 870 in March 2014.

Sri Lanka’s Niroshan Dickwella has gained nine slots to take 37th position among batsmen after scores of 64 and 24 while Suranga Lakmal (up two places to 31st) and Lahiru Kumara (up one place to 39th) have made upward movement among bowlers.

Well deserved. He's come a long way from when he was appointed captain with both bat and ball. I remember how innocuous he looked in the pink ODI vs SAF when De Villiers smashed him around the park.

Despite a lack of pace his accuracy is superb and his height means he can extract awkward bounce. With the bat he's produced many counterattacking and gritty knocks in the lower order when his teammates have collapsed.

Not much all round competition but his work over the last 18 months have been immense, and as a bloke, he seems like a good, upstanding man. A better example of what young West Indians should look up to than the likes of Gayle in the past. Well deserved.

WI cricket can consider themselves very fortunate to have him as their captain.

He's really worked hard at his game, sets a great example and is improving in all facets- bowling, batting, captaincy.

I'm a big fan of Holder but Gayle is a WI legend, so no need to slag him off.

Deserving - fast bowling all-rounders are the MVP of the game, particularly Test game. He has 5fors/10fors with ball, and 100/200 with bat, easily the most impactful fast-bowling all-rounder now. Leading his side as well.

I hope he gathers the courage to bat at 7 in Tests & play 4 pure bowlers at 8-11 .

He's easily the best fast-bowling all-rounder (the Rolls Royce of Test Cricket) since Flintoff.

Such a hard-working cricketer who continues to improve.

What a great ambassador he has been for Windies cricket.

Gayle might be a WI legend performance wise but what Holder does deserves a lot of respect, Gayle prefers money from leagues over playing for his country which makes me lose a bit of respect for him and he is hardly a role model for upcoming cricketers. I am over the moon for Holder. He is becoming one of my favourite non-Pakistani cricketers.

You can't say he played for money after earning over 100 test caps. Why is he a bad role model for upcoming cricketers?

I share the same energy in regards to Holder but why not give both players the respect they deserve?

Because we all know the background with the administration of CWI and Chris Gayle has made it clear he'd rather play leagues than play for his country. And I didn't say he's a bad role model either, he's just not a great role model, at least not compared to Holder, who deserves the utmost respect from everyone involved in West Indies cricket.

The way I see it, CWI is the most dysfunctional cricket board of all the major 8 cricketing nations. Along with him numerous other players have refused to play WI on a regular basis.

Even in his late 30s he put his hand up when WI desperately needed his batting in WC qualification. Despite the disagreements between CWI and most prominent of WI players in the past, can't fault his commitment to the national side.

I know you haven't mentioned it but I feel Gayle is a cricketer looked down upon on PP, merely because of a sexist comment he made in BBL.

I still feel that he should be played as a batting all rounder. He has very good untapped batting potential.
