What's new

Jason Roy as a Test cricketer?

i said this before he debuted that i dont think he will succeed in test cricket. doesn't have the defensive technique to survive on seaming/swinging wickets.

his mindset is hit first, with that mindset he will always be nicking off to the slips or getting bowled through the gate.

Just the way he defends the ball is so awkward to see. He is falling over every time. Finch struggled in tests but he was mostly hamstrung by batting in the wrong position (he plays in the middle order in Shield cricket) but Roy makes every ball look like it is swinging and seaming like Wasim at his peak whether he is opening or batting at #4 or whether the ball is new or 75 overs old.

Last chance saloon for him today.

It won’t go well.

Needs to play the ball quite a bit later... keeps searching for it rather than letting it come to him.

Quite painful to watch him to be honest, goes at the ball way too hard. Needs to play with softer hands.

That was his best knock of the series. But that’s not saying much.

massive gap between bat and pad again, painful to watch and have to say it but even Leach as no 11 has a better defensive technique

Needs dropping asap.

Just shows how poor England's Test batting resources are that this guy is playing Test cricket.

Looking awful in test's. But, nothing unsurprising as most people thought he will be a failure. Time to get players who can play test. His technique is shockingly poor.

If he is not playing his natural game, his selection is pointless then

He will just reach the dressing room quicker if he plays his natural game. There are a lot of superb fast and spin bowlers going around now and test cricket has become more of a balance between bat and ball than it was in years.

If Roy can come to Pakistan without security, why can't the Sri Lankan team.

England opener Jason Roy set to make red-ball comeback for Surrey

England's World Cup-winning opener Jason Roy is set to make a surprise return to red-ball cricket after being named in Surrey's squad to face Warwickshire in the County Championship Division One at Edgbaston from Friday, May 9.

Roy, who is known for his fearless batting approach and ability to score briskly in the white-ball formats, has played 87 First-Class matches, scoring 4,850 runs at an average of 36.46 and a strike rate of 80.75. He has also represented England in five Tests, scoring 187 runs. The last time he appeared in a red-ball fixture was a one-off Bob Willis Trophy appearance for Surrey against Hampshire in the Covid-marred summer of 2020. He registered scores of 4 and 14 in that encounter.

His return to the format comes on the backdrop of Surrey looking to fill the void created by the absence of the club's ECB-contracted batters, Ollie Pope and Jamie Smith, who are rested for this fixture alongside Gus Atkinson ahead of the forthcoming Test against Zimbabwe later this month.

Roy's availability also highlights his dwindling demand in the global T20 arena. He played a significant role in England's white-ball revolution post the 2015 ODI World Cup. However, he wasn't picked by the selectors in the Three Lions' title defence in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. The right-handed batter didn't find a team at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction after withdrawing for personal reasons on three occasions in 2020, 2022 and 2024.
