...cool name & a decent opener. Nice simple technique and quite powerful too. Probably the bulkiest cricketer at the moment :13:

too soon to make a comment on him.

home conditions, no pressure, small totals...lets see how he faces upto someone like lee or steyn? or even ishant for that matter lol

Hes just starting his career off and also N.Z has ridicolously small grounds where miss-hits go for six, maybe the next mark greatbach!

His face reminds me of Inzi. It just has that chubby Inzi look and he is a bit tanned so all the more reason he looks like Inzi. Not liek every fat person looks like Inzi, IE Rob Key. But Ryder and Inzi have alot of striking similarites.

How is his technique? Does he look like a future star ala Duminy/R Sharma or a one hit wonder ala Sinclair?

Well I was from the same town as Jesse Ryder ( New Plymouth ) as he played for Central Districts, I watched him live many many times and seriously I thought he was certainly going to be New Zealands best opener even a couple of years back when he was very young...
He is very entertaining with a huge variety of shots and likes to attack which is very pleasing.

The only weakness of his is his attitude which has been questioned many times, such as drinking recklessly and misbehaving, breaking team curfews and clubbing most nights.
Also his fitness was a concern but nowdays maybe he has changed and I hope for a bright future ahead of this young star...

when i saw him first time i was shocked he seems very fat and is quite young i dont know how he will stay fit

He is supposed to be 23?

Man he has certainly gotten very, very fat.... my goodness he used to be so much skinnier -_- seriously too much fish & chips.

FOrgot to add he had a following of high school girls after him previously... when he wasn't so ummmm freaking fat!

I thought Afridi was supposed to be 19 or something?

if he keeps playing well and earns quick cash....the girls will always come back lol

why not?? if Wayne Rooney is 22 only, nothing wrong with that guy. just that he is big and hence looks older.

I work with a guy who played against him in the Liverpool league. Apparantly Jessie likes the odd beer or 19.

Present for birthday: Stairmaster

how does he run between wickets? Or does he expect to get all his runs through boundaries. Seriously how do you consider yourself an athlete and show up to camp like that. The ball is round yes, doesn't mean you have to be round too.

He could be 23.. i have seen lots of chubby kids who are much younger than 23 and much bulkier than Ryder.

atleast it's not as bad as this whale I guess. Still though, Jesse is representing a proper test playing nation.

No love for the fat guys?

I am a David Boon fan. Jesse looks very slim to me.

On another note, Kiwis and Ozzies - particularly if they have Maori/Islander heritage - can grow pretty big pretty early. For example, how old do you reckon this bloke is? He's one of our rugby props of Tongan heritage.

They grow 'em big in the islands mate. You should see some of the 16-18yos I had to play against when I was still at school. Some of them were pushing 110kgs already while I was still at 65-70kgs lol.

Ryder injured after breaking window

Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand opener, is expected to be out for action or three months after injuring his right hand following a window-breaking incident at the Christchurch Stock Exchange bar.

Ryder's injury occurred at 5:30am, the morning after New Zealand's series win against England when he was trying to gain access to a toilet area that had been accidentally locked. He was scheduled to be operated on in Christchurch Hospital this afternoon.

Ryder requires a reconstruction to the exterior tendon on his index finger, a flap reconstruction, and a skin graft. It is expected to be six weeks before he can start light training and up to three months before he can resume playing competitively so long as there are no complications.

Lindsay Crocker, the New Zealand team's general manager, said New Zealand Cricket and the team were disappointed in Ryder's behaviour and viewed this incident seriously.

"We recognise the pressure Jesse has been under through his success in the England series and he has suddenly become a high profile international player," Crocker said. "However, this behaviour is unacceptable and we will have a serious discussion with him to ensure situations like this do not occur in the future."

Ryder smashed 196 runs in the five ODIs against England at an impressive strike-rate of 91.16. "Jesse had shown increasing maturity during the England series and we had been happy with his behaviour up to this point. However in light of this event we shall ensure additional support is provided to Jesse.

"We have team behavioural protocols which are monitored by the group as a whole and this system has served us well for the past four years. The incident will be worked through when we next assemble to see whether there is anything which should be improved."

"Ryder will pay for the damage and apologise to the bar owner. No further disciplinary action will be taken as Jesse's injuries should serve as enough of a lesson on this occasion."

This isn't the first time Ryder has been in trouble with authority. He refused to play for New Zealand A last year and was sacked by Ireland after failing to turn up for a Friends Provident Trophy match against Surrey.

Ryder was tipped for a Test berth against England but the injury has ruled him out for the entire series and probably the return contest in May.

Ryder in trouble for late night noise

Ryder in trouble for late night noise

Cricinfo staff

August 7, 2010

Jesse Ryder has added another chapter to his troubled career after being fined for "intoxicated and rowdy" behaviour at a hotel during an indoor cricket tournament. Ryder, who is currently out of the New Zealand side with an elbow injury, admitted to a serious misconduct charge but is expected to be available for the tour of Bangladesh in September.

"I accept that being intoxicated and rowdy during the night put me in a position where I put New Zealand Cricket and my own reputation at risk and I accept this is not tolerable," Ryder said in a letter to New Zealand Cricket. "The potential consequences of this event have distressed me over the last few weeks."

Ryder said he had apologised to the hotel for his behaviour after a noise complaint was lodged. He had been staying there with his indoor cricket team.

"I have put a lot of time into working out a plan to prevent me being in this position again," he said. "I am committed to making the right changes in my life as I really want a long career as a professional cricket player. I've had enough of getting into this sort of trouble and bringing attention to myself."

The most serious of Ryder's indiscretions came in 2008 when he put his right hand through a glass window during a late-night session at a Christchurch bar. Early last year he gave up alcohol after another incident.

"I know the changes I am making do not dismiss the misconduct issue, however I am fully committed to [New Zealand] and I am committed to doing what is necessary to be the best I can be," he said. "I am grateful to NZC for sticking by me and I want to thank them by performing for many years to come."

Geoff Allott, NZC's general manger of cricket, said the matter was viewed "very seriously". "NZC is extremely disappointed in this breach of trust and protocol by Jesse," he said. "We have seen some positive progress from Jesse in recent times, which makes this incident even more disappointing.

"Jesse has been fined in line with our serious misconduct provisions and clearly understands we will not tolerate a repetition of this type of behaviour." He gave Ryder credit for letting NZC know about the incident.

Comments: I wonder why do Newzealand even put up with this guy and let him off easy everytime. He is always in the news for all the wrong reasons. He is not even a special player.

Jesse Ryder out as injury hits again

Jesse Ryder and injury have been unwelcome companions for much of his international career.

The latest issue is an inflamed shoulder which has forced the Wellington left-hander out of the New Zealand XI's three-day match against Pakistan starting at Whangarei's Cobham Oval tomorrow.

Canterbury batsman Dean Brownlie has been called into the side.

New Zealand Cricket medical staff have said Ryder's injury is not thought to be serious. The move is more of a precaution ahead of the first test starting in Hamilton next Friday, and designed to prevent any aggravation to an old elbow injury.

It leaves him little time to be ready for a five-day contest, after a diet of T20 cricket over the last month.

Ryder left the tour of India at the end of the third test in late November after suffering a calf strain in the first innings.

He returned to the Wellington side for the HRV Cup on December 12 and in four games of the 20-over format scored 4, 13, 86 (off 47 balls, against Northern Districts) and 56 (off 33 against Canterbury).

However, he had a poor T20 series against Pakistan, making 6, 0 and 0, and facing just 11 balls.

He was not expected to do any bowling in the two tests, but his batting average of 50.95 from 14 tests is compelling ammunition in his favour, provided his shoulder recovers.

Several New Zealand XI players will welcome a decent workout at Cobham Oval.

The Nos 1 and 11 in the batting order, Tim McIntosh and Chris Martin, have not played a game of note since leaving India after the third test in Nagpur ended a day early on November 23.

McIntosh will welcome a look at the Pakistani bowlers, while Martin, along with captain Dan Vettori, who missed the T20 series against the tourists, needs some bowling to prepare for the first test.

Brendon McCullum had one bat in the domestic T20 for Otago before withdrawing from the rest of the competition to try to iron out a niggling back complaint. Having missed the three 20-over internationals this week, he too will value time at the crease.

Most of those in the game are expected to be named in the test squad, with the probable exceptions of batsman BJ Watling and swing bowler Trent Boult.

The game will be 12-a-side, enabling both teams to use an extra bowler.

New Zealand are due to name the 12th player either later today or tomorrow morning.

The smart money would be on a Central Districts' fast-medium bowler who drops out of their HRV Cup final squad of 13, with perhaps either Mitchell McClenaghan or Doug Bracewell at the front of the queue.

In Pakistan's case, coach Waqar Younis confirmed the tourists will use their anticipated test line-up.

Their test captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, is one of four newcomers who were not in Pakistan's T20 squad.

The others are opener Taufeeq Umar, middle order batsman Azhar Ali and awkward left arm swing bowler Sohail Tanvir, who is a late addition after overcoming knee problems, which have blighted his career in recent months.

Waqar made it plain what Thursday night's thumping T20 win in Christchurch meant to the players.

"Just to get momentum going into the test matches we needed this victory, and the boys played to their potential," he said.

"It definitely gives us a bit of a push going into the tests. It's a new ball game."

Bhudda is out, but was he really a threat?

Who cares, he's nothing.

Care to explain why? His batting average of 50.95 from 14 tests certainly shows he's something than nothing.

Ryder has suffered several injuries in the past 5-6 months now it's obvious that the only way hr can possibly avoid that is to improve his match-fitness and lost some chunk he is carrying.

The guy averages 76 at home in 5 tests bit in fairness it was against India and Windies...
That being said when I saw he was injured I thought thats good news for us cos I cant imagine his replacement will be better...

He will do awful against us in the Test matches - his technique is flawed, no feet movement, and even with our much weaker test bowling line up he's going to be our bunny.
This was shown in the t20's, he got out to stupid shots because he simply can't play.

Asif bowling to him would have been a sight to see :(

How can you say he will do awfull against Pakistan without him even playing? You must be special to judge a player before he even plays in a different format.

Against India Ryder scored 3 hundreds and 1 double hundred against a side who are in the top 2 (Test rankings) and I didn't see anything wrong with his technique back then?

This was shown in the t20's, he got out to stupid shots because he simply can't play.

T20 is a completely different format to test - every batsman has a different approach to the bowlers which are appropiate for the format.

We'll see a different Younis in the test - because his approach will be different this time, same goes for Ryder (even though he's out with a injury).

Ryder Caught in Controversy | Twitter Incident

Ryder rants at team-mate

New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder has courted controversy by criticising a team-mate on Twitter during a domestic one-day game.

Ryder let rip after being run out whilst playing for Wellington in a clash against Northern Districts.

On returning to the dressing room, the left-hander vented his spleen at team-mate Stephen Murdoch who had left him high and dry.

Ryder tweeted: "I just got run out by my other batter. What a waste of time this day is. I love getting left high and dry by my other batter."

New Zealand Cricket has revealed it will not take disciplinary action against Ryder, 26, but said his tweeting was ill-advised.

This title is better.

Psychological battle is being won by us. :D

Hype up the controversy to make him look bad. Plus, you started it with your title. :)))

ryder is bad boy of newzland team. he has couple of controversy in past too.

Who cares, you're not really troubling us as much as we thought you'd be Mr. Doughboy.

i dont know...it would have been controversial if he said left high and dry by piece of cow crap batsman at other end or something and if he went on a rant about minorities...im just saying

What's so controversial about that?

It was the most diplomatic way to express his feelings.

Venting spleen?

Political Correctness fail.

ryder is a normal person who gets angry as normal ppl do........
nothing big at all,..
not even a controversy

Big deal. Journalists need to learn not to get over-excited by tweets.

Jesse is great on twitter:

@Martyguptill gincy I love getting left high an dry by my opening batter....

*** is this? I expected a real rant full of swearing and insulting his teamates cricket ability.. change the terrible title of thread plz mods

Great innings. He seems to have a lot of time to play his shots.

Brutal knock indeed.

Comeon NZ score more than 300, let's see how good we are.

He is a beast. Would be a wonderful test for us to win this now. 300+ looks imminent, and I cant wait to see Razzaq and Afridi go after this target with straight boundaries less than 60 meters away.
