A fast-track court in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district on Wednesday sentenced 11 people, including one local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, to life imprisonment for lynching a Muslim trader they suspected of transporting beef last year. The court didn’t decide on a 12th convict who is reported to be a minor.

The court of additional district judge Om Prakash had held the 11 men guilty under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), among other offences, on March 16.

The 11 men — Santosh Singh, Chottu Verma, Deepak Mishra, Vicky Saw, Sikandar Ram, Uttam Ram, Vikram Prasad, Raju Kumar, Rohit Thakur, Kapil Thakur and BJP worker Nityanand Mahto — were convicted of murdering Alimuddin Ansari alias Asgar Ali, a 55-year-old trader, on June 29 last year. The convicts were also fined Rs 2,000 each.

Additional public prosecutor Sushil Kumar Shukla said this was the first case of cow vigilantism in the country in which the accused were convicted and punished.

“However, the court is yet to decide on the defence counsel’s contention that the 12th convict is a juvenile. We have opposed it on the grounds that he is over 16 years of age,” he added.

Defence lawyer DN Singh said he will file an appeal against the convictions in the Jharkhand high court.

The court has forwarded its order to the district legal services authority, so it can initiate steps to compensate the victim’s family.

The victim’s wife, Mariam Khatun, welcomed the judgment. “The death of my husband came as an irreparable loss. The accused deserved nothing less,” she said.

Last June, a mob, allegedly of more than 100 people, lynched Alimuddin alias Asgar Ali, who was on his way back home after buying meat from a local market, on the suspicion that he was carrying beef.

The mob surrounded him at Bazartand in Ramgarh town, about 45km from the state capital Ranchi, and set his van on fire after killing him. Cow slaughter is banned in Jharkhand.

The lynching occurred just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned against such attacks by vigilante group, saying the killing of people in the name of protecting cows was unacceptable.

Similar cases of cow vigilante violence — including the lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq in Uttar Pradesh’s Dadri in 2015 and that of Pehlu Khan in Rajasthan’s Alwar in 2017 — remain at the trial stage.

Ansari’s lynching followed a string of similar attacks in Jharkhand by cow vigilantes last year. The attack rocked Parliament with several opposition leaders questioning the administration’s resolve to tame cow vigilantes.

In the face of widespread criticism, the state government warned officers-in-charge of police stations across Jharkhand that they would be held responsible for any such incident taking place in their jurisdiction.

The state government also requested the Jharkhand high court to constitute a special fast-track court to try the Ramgarh lynching incident. Police filed the charge sheet in September, and the trial was completed in less than six months.

Justice served, hot. With (beef) fries.

Good decision. The law of the country has to be respected. If the law allows consumption of beef then Hindu's need to accept it. Hope Muslim prisoners give these 11 criminals a good bashing in prison:viru

Good. All such morons need to be be locked up for life. I hope other prisoners make life miserable for those scums.

These murderers (who have been released on bail) were just decorated with garlands - on its own that’s disgusting stuff but to make things worse this was actually done at a government ministers house and in his presence. He even fed them sweets.

Wow.

Absolutely horrible.

Why would a govt minister decorate convicted killers? Am I missing something here?

Appeasement of militant should help to increase his vote bank and assure him being elected especially if those militant acted against minority that is hated f the most for their religious belief.

Similar event have happened in Pakistan.

It seems Pakistan is getting out of militancy whereas Indian are happy to be fooled and adhere to it willingly.

What a disgusting act, that too coming from a Union Minister. In an ideal world he should be sacked, it is scary to see what India has become since 2014. Modi may be our Zia-ul-Haq.

BJP is cancer.
These incidents are increasing day by day.
BJP knows it has done nothing in 4 years so is trying hard to please Hindus by doing these kind of stuffs. Unfortunately our aam janta is uneducated and easy to manipulate, they will again vote for Modi in 2019.

I'm way too embarrassed to even express my self. Disgusting, that's all I can say.

He’s not even some uneducated guy turned government minister (not that that’s an excuse anyway) but he’s an IIT, University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard Business School graduate, has worked for multinationals in the US and is the son of a respected former finance and foreign minister. Abominable and appalling behaviour by Jayant Sinha.

I’m not surprised that he got in HBS. Its the IIT that surprises me. IITs / IIMs are one of the very few institutes that select candidates based on merit and not nepotism.

For a man who is touted to be a future Fin Min and is very highly educated this is a grave mistake. He cannot claim ignorance in not knowing the difference between suspension and overturning of conviction.

Yes the opposition hails convicted people like Laaloo even hob nob with convicted murderers like Sahabuddin or Ansari but thats one of the reason they are out of power. Repeating similar mistakes will not help BJP leaders.

Difference is that he still might end up becoming India's FM. In fact his playing to his gallery could increase his chances. Its the blueprint that has worked so far.

Well he may yet become Fin Min. You are right. But then Laaloo became CM and Railway Min. Sahabuddin was MP. And these are accused of murder or multi billion scams.

Sadly in India politics post Indira Gandhi has turned into two things.

1. Appease the muslims at the cost of hindus.

2. That ultimately gave rise to the second stream. Any dispute between hindus and muslims is a religious issue and attack on hindu religion and support the hindus.

The thing is no one needs to be appeased and law needs to be followed. But there is hardly a politician in India except may be Naveen Patnaik who can win an election with no religious polarisation.

Jayant Sinha says he and other BJP members helped Jharkhand lynching accused with legal expenses

Union minister Jayant Sinha on Thursday told the BBC said that he and members of the Bharatiya Janata Party had given financial aid to persons accused in a lynching case in Jharkhand to help them pay the legal fees. Sinha was clarifying his stance on an incident in which he was criticised for garlanding the men accused of lynching cattle trader Alimuddin Ansari in Jharkhand in 2017.

The BJP MP from Hazaribagh condemned the lynching but said that the accused in the case were innocent and had to unfairly remain in jail for a year. “I am very sympathetic to Mariam Khatoon [the victim’s widow] and Alimuddin Ansari,” Sinha said. “But the people who came to my house were innocent and very poor. It was a private occasion. They [the accused and his family] came to my house and told me that I have given him a new life and asked me to garland him. And I complied.”

The minister said that someone uploaded footage of the event on Facebook and the media picked it up and distorted it.

Sinha denied that his action was inappropriate and described a certain section of the media as biased. “There are so many friends in the media that are connected with an ideology, and believe that they are guilty,” Sinha said. “If anyone studies this case and reads the High Court’s bail order, it will be obvious that those who came to my house were innocent.”

The BJP leader said he stood for “absolute justice”. “I say that the victim should get justice, but so should those who have been imprisoned for a year,” Sinha said. “He [the accused] was so poor that he did not even have the money to present his case properly in court.”

To a question on if he helped the family of the deceased, Sinha said, “If Mariam Khatoon came to my home or someone asked me for help, then I would have been absolutely cooperative.”

When asked if he would garland any lynching accused in the future if the opportunity arises, Sinha answered in the negative. “I say no, because people misuse such situations to benefit themselves,” he said. “The optics become bad. I acted that way to ensure that justice is done.”

In July 2018, Sinha had expressed regret for garlanding eight men accused in the case because it gave critics “an opportunity to say I was condoning vigilantism”, Hindustan Times had reported.

Meanwhile, Khatoon told the BBC that she will only be convinced that the government was ready to help her if they give her son a job.

Sinha is the son of former BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, who has been critical of the party and the Centre.

If leaders can provide legal help to ISIS terror accused or Mumbai bomb blast accused or offer to withdraw terror cases againist muslims or offer to give amnesty killers of Rajiv Gandhi, why is this wrong?

People are still backing this dastardly act. On expected lines though.

A new low by even your standards. Defending this as well?

Owaisi provides legal help to ISIS accused.

Lawyers lined up at the supreme court at midnight and got the judges to hear the case of mumbai bomb blast accused Yakub Memon.

Akhilesh Yadav govt withdrew cases againist terror accused.

TamilNadu govt wanted to withdraw cases againist LTTE terrorists convicted in Rajiv Gandhi assasination.

If all this is right why the BJP providing legal help to these people wrong?

1 Lynched, Other Injured for Allegedly Stealing Goat in Jharkhand

Two young men were tied with ropes and reportedly beaten up brutally by locals in Kathikund village in Dumka, Jharkhand, for allegedly stealing a goat, reported ANI, quoting the Superintendant of Police, Dumka.

The man who died was Subhan Ansari, 26. While his friend who is in the hospital is Dulal Mirdha, 22.

A senior police officer Ambar Lakda stated that an FIR will be filed against the villagers involved in the lynching, according to NDTV.

Villagers have claimed that they were spotted butchering a goat outside the village by some men who had surrounded them and accused them of theft.

The crowd allegedly dragged them into the village and tied them to a tree.

Then they thrashed the two men, and by the time the police arrived, they were found injured and bleeding.
