Eyewitnesses said Jo Cox, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was left bleeding on the floor by her attacker. A man also suffered slight injuries.

A 52-year-old man was arrested near Market Street, Birstall, West Yorkshire Police said. The MP holds a weekly advice surgery nearby.

Ms Cox's assistant confirmed she had been attacked.

The MP was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary, where armed police are stationed outside.

A 52-year-old man was arrested near Market Street, Birstall, West Yorkshire Police said. The MP held a weekly advice surgery nearby.

The MP's death was confirmed at police headquarters in Wakefield.

Police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the country would be "in shock at the horrific murder", describing the MP as a "much loved colleague".

I jumped the gun initially because that's what Sky news had said that the guy was a wierdo mental type but now it's clear he was a right wing extremist - apparently from the group Britain First.

I did a thread on Britain First a while back after watching a documentary, because I was shocked how they were getting away with peddling blatant lies in public in order to propagate hate against certain communities.

The whole of Yorkshire Cricket will be paying tribute to local MP Jo Cox from Batley and Spen at Headingley tonight following her tragic death in senseless circumstances yesterday.

Ahead of tonight’s NatWest T20 Blast match against Notts Outlaws, players, officials, Members and spectators will join together and remember Jo by observing a minute’s silence. The players will also wear black armbands during tonight’s match.

Mark Arthur, Yorkshire County Cricket Club Chief Executive, has paid his own tribute to the much-loved local MP.

“Jo was a kind, intelligent person who was generous with her time,” Arthur said.

“She genuinely wanted to help others, particularly those in her constituency, and make a difference to their lives. My heart goes out to her husband Brendan and their two young children.”

Jo Cox, 41, a respected Labour Party MP, died Thursday after Thomas Mair, 52, allegedly stabbed and shot her and referenced a far right anti-immigrant group opposed to Britain's membership in the European Union.

The SPLC, which tracks hate groups, said that Mair was one of between 15 and 20 people to appear at the gathering 16 years ago, which aimed to expand an American neo-Nazi's "white power" music business into Europe.

The report cites Todd Blodgett, a former GOP domestic policy analyst and consultant who became involved in the radical right in the 1990s and helped arrange the London meeting. In May 2000, when the group convened, Blodgett was working as a paid FBI informant, according to the report.

Mair appeared to be loosely connected to a local chapter of the neo-Nazi group National Alliance, Blodgett told SPLC. He described Mair as a "working-class kind of guy" who was self-educated, well read and an admirer of the white power band Skrewdriver, as well as a Holocaust denier.

my stance is quite simple.

i'm in favour of all hard working honest people regardless of their colour, creed....what I don't tolerate are people that work cash in hand illegally, tax & benefit cheats + people that refuse to integrate / assimilate.

Also I think it is unfair for Europeans to come over to the UK and start claiming benefits inc housing, health, etc the same day they arrive - one should only have the right to claim if you put in (people that can work have to work).
