A Martin Guptill drive has floored former Australian test bowler Joe Mennie in English county cricket.

Mennie, who played one test and two one-day internationals in 2016, was struck on the side of the head and fell still on the wicket as players and officials, including Worcestershire's Guptill, rushed to his aid.

The Lancashire bowler became the first player to be subbed out of a game with concussion.

Mennie reportedly deflected the ball towards his temple.

Danny Lamb replaced Mennie under new rules instigated this season.

A fractured skull and internal bleeding from a training accident forced Mennie to miss two months of cricket last season.

Guptill went on to make 111 from 106 balls as part of Worcestershire's 361 for four. They have a lead of 478 with two days' play remaining.

Joe Mennie substituted after being hit in the head while bowling in English county cricket

FORMER Aussie Test bowler Joe Mennie has become the first player subbed out of an English county game with concussion after he suffered a nasty blow while bowling for Lancashire.

It comes after Mennie, who played his only Test in Hobart in 2016, was forced to miss two months of cricket last year after suffering a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain following a training accident.

This time the 29-year-old was struck by a drive from powerful New Zealand one-day opener Martin Guptill, who was batting for Worcestershire in a four-day game at New Road.

Guptill drove the ball back at Mennie and it hit the South Australian seamer on the right side of his head after deflecting off his hand.

Mennie was able to walk from the ground unassisted, but after assessment in the rooms was deemed unfit to go on.

Mennie was able to be replaced by all-rounder Danny Lamb under rules under new rules enforced for this season.

Lancashire officials were being ultra cautious with their international player who suffered the fractured skull in January 2017 after an incident in the nets while training with Big Bash team the Sydney Sixers.

Mennie suffered minor bleeding on his brain and missed two months of cricket before returning the Redbacks in Sheffield Shield cricket.

He was being sent to hospital for scans with Lancashire officials to provide further updates on his condition.
