Is this movie based on Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's classic "The Killing Joke" widely considered the best Joker Origin Story.

The teaser looks very interesting, nothing like the over-the-top stylized DC version we have become so accustomed to seeing. Joker is by far the best character in the Batman series, at times more fascinating than the Batman himself. Joaquin Phoenix is probably the best character actor working nowadays. He is especially good in playing dark and psychologically messed up characters like in The Master. This could be very interesting.

The movie may not be a part of the DC universe but they are sure taking inspiration from The Killing Joke, everyone has their opinion on the character with some wanting to maintain the mystique; I understand the Joker should't be overexposed because it emphasises what a maniacal Machiavellian he is when you're not so sure about his motives.

The origin story ought to develop a little sympathy for him but am all for this so long they produce a high calibre movie, there is certainly potential for that, this adaptation will be a lot more grounded and gritty. I believe Scorsese is involved and he wanted Dicaprio to assume the role but he declined, Phoneix is not a bad choice at all and am sure he will do a great job, the Joker character is not easy to play but can be rewarding to if the execution is bang on.

Leto is still going to be the Joker in other DC movies

I think if Phoenix's casting works, they could incorporate him in other DC movies,replacing Leto.

His sad and troublesome past certainly makes him the perfect candidate for such roles. I remember during an presser when he was asked about how he prepared for role his in role in The Master. he snapped back saying "What do you mean by acting? I agree with both your opinions (on Leto and the fact that others can reinvent the character)

Leto is a great actor, but I feel his look was messed up,with the face tattoos etc. That may have put people off his performance. He was given only a few minutes in the movie and hopefully he shines in upcoming movies.

Every reincarnation of the Joker has a different timeline, different backstory and so different age difference with the Batman.

Very recently it had even been revealed that the Joker was an immortal entity.

But I mean they have to make Batman a non factor in this film, else if he was old enough the question would be why doesn't he stop him.

I like how they made him relatable at first. Someone who tried to see the good in the world, but the world drove him away.

Some renditions of the Joker have him simply as a purely evil and at times immortal entity.

To be honest we've not even seen much of Leto but from what I have seen he hasn't been terrible at all, perhaps people have more of an issue with the incarnation but even then he has barely had much screen time. Also, people always bring up Ledger's magnificent performance and it was great but so was Nicholson and my favourite Mark Hamil; each version was distinct and great in their own way, there is no reason why one can not reinvent the persona or present a different take.

I don't want to hype it up. I want to see the whole movie and then judge.

This will be a decent outing imo, better then the stuff you usually see in the genre and more grounded / gritty which means more potential for a decent narrative

Phoenix perfectly cast - they can now make him look old and embittered enough for the role.

He perfectly captured an ascent into violent solipsistic megalomania with Commodus, so given his now greater experience and the mythology of the Joker character then I’m sure this will be even better.

The thing is the MCU distorted the perception of comic book characters in general because graphic novels like the dark knight returns primarily revolved around very gritty adult themes which revolved around the thriller and psychological horror aspect, the same can be said about the killing joke, watchmen novels etc Saw the trailer today, it looked ok but wont have high expectations; this movie will join a very small list of releases which focused on super villain origins so it's going to be hit or miss I reckon, it should be solid though if not spectacular. It will be a while until we see something on the level of Nolan series / Logan, maybe Batman solo will do well to compete with those.

I see where you're coming from but the character itself has largely not received much screen time as far as live action movies are concerned in general and if we go by the same logic then perhaps Alan Moore should never have written the Killing Joke but it didn't harm the characters perception at all in my opinion and from what I have read this movie takes inspiration from that novel for its own premise so it should be fine. The challenge is to enthral us whilst leaving a decent amount to the imagination, I don't think they will go into too much detail and there is only so much you can cover in a couple of hours.

I still don't believe any other Joker would be as good as Heath Ledger's Joker. Everything about that Joker was masterpiece.

I am aware of different versions of Joker. But, this movie seems to humanize Joker. I prefer Joker that is absolute vile and remorseless. This Joker is not that. Ledger's Joker was that.

So, I finally watched this movie today. I have to say that it is a great movie with lots of great actors/actresses. However, I can't call this Joker the best Joker.

I have to call this Joker second worse Joker of all time (just better than Jack Leto). Both Ledger and Nicholson played better Jokers.

The thing that turned me off was the fact this Joker was way too emotional. It was like an emo Joker. I am giving this Joker C- and the movie B+. It also had a pretty lame ending. Joker got caught way too easily.
