Pakistan veteran Younis Khan may have belted Australia's bowlers to all corners of the SCG in the third Test, but he had some kind words for pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood.

Younis, who finished on an unbeaten 175 as his side struggled to 315 all out on day four, picked Hazlewood as the best of the Australian bowlers, comparing him to the metronomic genius Glenn McGrath.

"He's very young in Test cricket, his body language. It is very fantastic," the 39-year-old told Grandstand.

"He doesn't give you any easy runs. So I think he will be the next McGrath for the Australian team."

Despite the efforts of Hazlewood, who finished with figures of 4-55 in Pakistan's first innings, Younis accumulated runs with relative ease, and is now within touching distance of 10,000 career runs.

He needs another 36 runs to reach the hallowed milestone.

"If you see that list you will see no Pakistanis. So it was my wish to have at least one or two guys there and they make 10,000 for their country," Younis said.

"If I achieve that I will be very proud of myself and all Pakistan will be proud of me."

Pakistan finds itself in a similar situation to the Melbourne Test, faced with the prospect of surviving the final day to save the match.

Younis says the side will be looking more to Brisbane for inspiration.

"The fifth day of a Test match is always hard. It will not be easy tomorrow and the way Australia bowls, not only the spinners but the reverse swing and pace.

"I think it is going to be hard for us but it depends on us, how we deal with things so if we are calm and cool overall it will be a good fight tomorrow."

YK is such a legend. He has earned my respect. One of the best batsmen of all time.

That's scary. Left arm rocketspeed at one end and The New McGrath at the other.

Is Josh Hazlewood the new Glenn McGrath?

South Africa and Pakistan visited Australia during the summer. Fans were already billing the series as Rabada vs Starc, Amir vs Starc, etc., to increase the hype and excitement before the series. While I suspect most Australian fans genuinely appreciate the talent of Hazlewood, he always seems to go under the radar of other country fans where Starc often overshadows him popularity wise. Afterall who gets excited by a boring line and length bowler.

But Hazlewood has silently gone about his business during the Australian summer averaging just 20 during both the series. In comparison, the other bowler sharing the new ball, Starc averaged 32 during the same period.

His economy rate of 1.99 in the recently concluded Aus vs Pak series is the least a bowler has conceded per over in about 30 years in Australia.

If Starc's strength lies in suddenly producing a magical delivery out of nowhere, Hazlewood's strength lies in being consistently "boring". Afterall the greatest prototype of his kind, Glenn McGrath became one of the best ever fast bowlers in the game by merely being just that, boring.

After the same number of matches, Hazlewood's numbers compare to Glenn McGrath as:

Glenn McGrath:
Matches - 26
Wickets - 110
Average - 24.90
SR - 56.1
5fers - 5
10fers - 0

Josh Hazlewood:
Matches - 26
Wickets - 109
Average - 24.78
SR - 52.5
5fers - 4
10fers -0

The stats of both bowlers after the same period are so similar that it's staggering. It's almost like Hazlewood is the heir apparent to Glenn McGrath. It's all the more outstanding considering that the pitches have become very flat roads over the last few years in Australia.

Do you think Hazlewood can reach the heights that McGrath reached?

Haze has potential, to early to compare him to McGrath yet and he will need a few more good seasons to see where he really stands.

Hazlewood is a far better bowler than stark.he gets top order wickets through his line and length where as stark is a spraygun who relies on speed to get batsman and also he doesnt have the consistency of hazlewood.starc can be useful to remove the tail faster due to his pace and yorkers but he will always be expensive

I rate him higher than Starc. When Starc is on song then he looks absolutely stellar, but when it's not going for him then he can look like a middle-class man's Wahab.

Hazelwood on the other hand always has a probing line and even when not picking up wickets he is keeping a lid on the run scoring.

Looks like Aus is finally are getting the pace in order and every bowler is remarkably similar age line now with difference of 1-2 years.

Very imporant fact not to be missed

Younis is not the first one to says that, many think Hazelwood is next McGrath.

Even when Hazelwood isn't picking wickets up he can find a way to stop the scoring rate.

Was outbowled (massively) by Starc in SL, in not so unhelpful conditions, then Philander & Rabada were easily better than him in the first two tests. I'd say waiting for a couple of years, before proclaiming him to be the next Mcgrath, would be better for him & his fans.

Rabada IMO is the best quickie going around these days, took another 10fer against SL, was the key enforcer in the 3 man attack on the highway at Perth. If he's fit & plays a good amount of tests, over the next decade, he should overtake Steyn & perhaps even Glen.
