Justin Langer may be filling in for Darren Lehmann as Australia’s coach for the triangular series in West Indies, but he insists he is in no hurry to take up the position permanently.

“I think the natural progression would be to one day coach the Australian cricket team, or certainly that would be an aspiration,” Langer told the Cricket Australia website ahead of the team’s departure to the Caribbean. “But I also know, having lived that life for so long, that you’re away from home for 11 months of the year and I also don’t think we can underestimate the importance of the role I’m doing at the moment as the head coach of one of the state teams. So who knows what will happen in the future.”

Langer is currently coaching Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield and Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League. He will be filling in for the national job for the first time, after Lehmann, who developed deep vein thrombosis earlier this year, was rested.

Though he has no plans to step away from the job in the foreseeable future, Lehmann has anointed Langer as his possible replacement.

Prior to his Western Australia appointment, Langer, who played 105 Tests and scored more than 7500 runs, worked as a specialist batting coach with the Australian team. He also had talks about the England coaching role last year, but decided against it, with the job going to fellow countryman Trevor Bayliss.

“It just didn’t feel right,” he said of the England job. It would have been difficult, he said, “looking over at all my mates singing the Australian national anthem and I’m in an England tracksuit singing the English national anthem”.

Australia begin the tri-series in Guyana on June 6 against South Africa before facing the hosts four days later at the same venue. The final is scheduled on June 26, and Langer said he was looking forward to the task at hand.

“Certainly this West Indies tour I’m looking forward to it, but I’m doing it with the respect it deserves,” said Langer. “I’m helping Darren out, I’m going to make sure the ship keeps running nice and smoothly in his absence and I think that’s the respect I can give him, it’s the respect I would expect if someone else was doing [for me] what I’m doing for him.

“Boof is doing a great job, I really admire how he’s going about his business and if I can help him for a few weeks then I’m happy to do that.”

Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc, 26, said he was raring to go after six months on the sidelines, declaring himself “fit, strong and ready”.

Starc has been out of action since fracturing his foot in last November’s historic day-night Test in Adelaide against New Zealand. “It’s been a long time coming. The foot has been great, there’s no pain in the ankle or the foot,” Starc told reporters in Sydney. “I’ve been really happy with it, it’s come along really well. I’ve had a good three or four months in the gym to get a bit of size back on, and I’m feeling really good; fit, strong and ready to play some cricket.”

His fitness boosts Australia’s pace attack that also features Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Scott Boland. Starc has been charging in off his full run-up and bowling with impressive pace at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane over the past few days, and said he was “in a good place”.

“I’m not sure if I’ll be back up to top speed straight away, it might take a couple of games as it normally does for fast bowlers coming back, but I’m excited to see how it comes out on the gun,” he said.

If Starc comes through the tri-series unscathed, he can look forward to a busy period with tours of Sri Lanka and South Africa. This is followed by a home summer featuring Tests against South Africa and Pakistan and one-dayers with Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Here is an Assessment & Prediction :

He will turn out to be one of the greatest International Coaches of Cricket provided he stays healthy.

Very underated cricketer think he will do well as a coach. Getting good experience in this tour of West indies and getting experience in domestic cricket. Aussies producing some good coaches. Wouldn't mind if we hired an Aussies coach in the future.

Justin Langer to coach Australia in KFC Twenty20 Internationals against Sri Lanka in February 2017

Cricket Australia (CA) today confirmed that Western Australia Head Coach Justin Langer will coach Australia for its three KFC Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against Sri Lanka in February 2017.

The appointment was agreed upon during a meeting of CA’s Board of Directors in Melbourne on Thursday.

Langer, who has twice coached the Perth Scorchers to KFC Big Bash League success in 2014 and 2015, will step in for Bupa Support Staff Head Coach Darren Lehmann, who will be on duty with the Test squad on the Qantas Tour of India as it prepares for the opening match of a four-match series.

Langer previously acted as interim Head Coach of the national side in June, linking up with the One-Day International squad in the Caribbean when Darren Lehmann took a break, piloting the line-up to success in a tri-series tournament against the West Indies and South Africa.

The KFC T20Is Langer will oversee will be at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (17 February), Kardinia Park in Geelong (19 February) and the Adelaide Oval (22 February).

Commenting on Justin Langer’s appointment, Cricket Australia Executive General Manager – Team Performance Pat Howard said: “We are delighted that Justin has agreed to undertake the role of acting Head Coach for the Twenty20 International series against Sri Lanka. We would also like to thank WACA for their support in releasing Justin.

“He did a terrific job in the Caribbean in June when he stepped in for Darren Lehmann during the successful tri-series and so is already familiar with the working environment around the Australia team.

“He brings a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach and his record in helping the Perth Scorchers to a sustained level of success in the KFC Big Bash League means he fits the bill in all ways.”

Justin Langer said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working with the national side in the Caribbean earlier this year and so I am excited and very grateful to get this opportunity to do it again, this time with the Twenty20 International squad against Sri Lanka.

“Twenty20 International cricket is the one format in which Australia is yet to win a global tournament so every chance we get to play it and develop our skills is very significant. That means these three matches will be hugely important.

“The advantage myself and the players will have is that the series will come just over two weeks after the KFC Big Bash League wraps up so we should all still be in Twenty20 mode.

“And with several senior players set to be in India ahead of the Test series, it really will give players an added incentive to perform in the upcoming KFC BBL to put their names forward for selection in the Sri Lanka series.

“Thanks to the officials at the Western Australia Cricket Association for giving me the chance to take on this challenge and thanks, too, to Cricket Australia for having faith in me to do it.”

Mickey Arthur is pretty much Aussie.

Has a cricket academy in Perth, Australia and is settled in the same city, I believe.

Jason Gillespie to work as assistant coach for Australia in IT20s against Sri Lanka in February 2017

Cricket Australia (CA) today announced that Jason Gillespie, the head coach of the Adelaide Strikers, will work as assistant coach for Australia’s three KFC Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against Sri Lanka in February 2017.

Gillespie will work with Justin Langer, who was confirmed as head coach for the series earlier this month.

The duo will step in for Bupa Support Staff Head Coach Darren Lehmann and his assistant David Saker, who will be on duty with the Test squad on the Qantas Tour of India as it prepares for the opening match of a four-match series.

Former Australia fast bowler Gillespie took 259 wickets in 71 Tests as well as 142 wickets in 97 One-Day Internationals and has extensive coaching experience, particularly in the shortest form of the game.

In addition to his ongoing role with the Adelaide Strikers where he is currently presided over a KFC Big Bash League campaign for the second time, Gillespie spent five years as Head Coach of English county side Yorkshire and prior to that he occupied the same role with the Mid-West Rhinos in Zimbabwe.

Commenting on his appointment, Jason Gillespie said: “I’m just buzzing to get this role – it really is an exciting opportunity – and I’m humbled to be thought of by Cricket Australia in this regard.

“For me, the chance to be working with Justin Langer is terrific. Of course he’s a friend and a former team-mate, but he’s also someone who’s had success in this form of the game (with two KFC BBL titles with the Perth Scorchers) and if I can learn anything from him and his approach then that would be great.

“I’m there to support and hopefully play my part in achieving some positive results for us and that is something that is important because Australia hasn’t had the success any of us would like in Twenty20 cricket. A series like this is the ideal way for us to try and get better and refine our approach.

“With some players likely to be away in India it really will be a shop window for players from the BBL to showcase their skills, and to show the selectors and the Australian public what they can do. It’s a chance for those selectors to see how, in the case of any new players, they deal with international cricket.”

The KFC T20Is between Australia and Sri Lanka will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (17 February), Kardinia Park in Geelong (19 February) and the Adelaide Oval (22 February).

Commenting on Jason Gillespie’s appointment, Cricket Australia Executive General Manager – Team Performance Pat Howard said: “It’s very pleasing that we’ve secured Jason’s services for the KFC Twenty20 International series against Sri Lanka to work with Justin.

“Jason has significant experience as a coach around the world and with his skillset we believe he and Justin will work well together.

“With Jason’s appointment alongside Justin, it means that not only will we have two terrific home-grown coaches to oversee the side but also that we have two individuals who will be coming off the sharp end of the BBL season.

“It means they’ll be immersed in the Twenty20 format ahead of the series which will hopefully help them to help us hit the ground running when the action gets underway.”
