Did anyone watch the electrifying speech of Kanhaiya? He totally laid into Modi and exposed the hypocrisy of their government. What was heartening was the coming of age of the nationalist communist, someone who loves the country and cares for all. There is still hope for India as long as young men like Kanhaiya are there. May he guide the youth of today with his pride and conviction. No matter what your political leanings are, I suggest all Indians to watch that speech with honesty. The best thing to happen to Indian political scene in a very long time.

Key points from his speech:

I want to thank everyone who has stood with JNU.
I want to thank the people sitting in Parliament deciding what is right and what is wrong.
I want thank their police and some media channels.
I have no hatred towards anybody, especially towards ABVP.
Because the ABVP we have on campus is more rational than the ABVP outside.
There will be no witch hunt against them.
We have no ill feelings towards ABVP because we truly believe in democracy and the Constitution.
We don't look at ABVP as the enemy, we look at them like the Opposition.
The best thing about how JNU has stood up in one voice was that it was spontaneous
They had all of it planned but we were spontaneous.
We stand up for all parts of Constitution - socialism, secularism and equality.
I don't want to comment on the case. It is sub judice.
I have many differences with the PM but I agree with his tweet - Satyameva Jayate - truth will triumph.
In railway stations you will find a guy who shows you magic tricks. We have some people like that in our country.
They say black money will come back, sabka saath sabka vikas, equality and all that.
Yes we Indians forget things too soon but this time the tamasha is too big. These jumlas wont be forgotten.
But what will happen if you speak up?
Their cyber-cell will release doctored videos and count condoms in your dustbins.
This is a planned attack to delegitimise the UGC protests, to prevent justice to Rohith Vemula.
But let me just say it is not easy to get admission in JNU neither it is easy to silence those in JNU.
You cannot dilute our struggle.
They say soldiers are dying on the borders - I salute them.
I want to ask the BJP lawmaker who said in Parliament that soldiers are dying on the border - is he your son or brother?
He is the son or father of the farmer who is dying of drought.
Do not create a false debate in this country.
Who is responsible for their deaths?
We will not rest till everybody has an equal right to prosperity.
We are not asking for freedom from India because India has not colonised anyone.
The man fighting on the border, perhaps he wanted to study but he couldn't get to JNU.
You want to silence one Rohith, today look how big that revolution has become.
I realised one thing in jail. We people of JNU speak in civilised voices, but we use heavy terminologies.
Perhaps it doesn't reach the common man. We have to establish communication with the common people.
We will bring Sabka Saath Sabka Vikaas for real.
Today the honourable PM was talking about Stalin, I say Modi ji speak about Hitler too sometimes. Or maybe Mussolini?
He speaks of Mann Ki Baat but doesn't listen.
What is happening today in the country is very dangerous.
It is not about one party, one news channel.
I have never told this to anybody but my family makes Rs. 3,000. Can you imagine somebody like me doing a PhD in any other college?
And they are calling anybody who stands up for this, traitor?
What kind of a self-proclaimed nationalism is this?
I want to remind our government that 69 per cent voted against you.
Just 31 per cent voted for you and some of them were caught up in your jumlas.
And today they are running a distraction campaign so that people don't ask them the real questions.
RSS mouthpiece The Organiser did a cover story on JNU.
If they can reason in a debate why JNU should be shut for four months, I will agree with them.
They want to suppress the voice of dissent but I want to tell them, you will never be able to do that.
Once again let's raise slogans for freedom - not from India, but within India.
Freedom from hunger, poverty, the caste system - all of that.

Kanhaiya Kumar - Hope for India.

Yes. and he had kind words for ABVP too. And that is the kind of environment india needs, where right and left both listen to each other. Ok, forget the right..but I like the resurgence of the new left. This is kind of youth India needs.

Thi is the youth world needs..I really envy India I wish we had such student leaders in Pakistan.

this stream of nationalist extremism in India can only be stopped by such people....I wish him lots of success in his cause and future.

A 29 year old still in college.

That says it all.

Nobody in India stays in college after 25. Most finish their graduation by 24 or 25 max.

What is this guy still doing in college. Probably getting paid by CPI and other useless parties to caryr out their dirty work.

From "We will break India into hundreds of pieces" to "We just want freedom in India". What a turnaround.

Guy should have been working in some job for the past 5 years. Yet he still is in college.

Not sure if serious or sarcastic :murali

Maybe a masters student?

Masters students finish by 25. All of my cousins finished their Masters by Age 24 and Bachelors by 21.

Most companies do not hire once the person turns 30 and if he is a freshie.

5 years from now, you will see this Kanhaiya Kumar still in JNU doing useless stuff. These people are called Scholars.

20 days in jail has taught him a few lessons. His speech has turned from ideological to political.

Probably serious. He might not know much about these Student Leaders of political parties.

CPI itself is extinct in India. What will this guy become after he graduates (if he ever).
RaGa and Congress have made a massive blunder. One of the few places in India where CPI has presence is Kerala and Congress is their opponent there.2 months before election Congress have given them a face. This is hilarious.

Ultra right is doing it for centuries...time can change your ideas belong to right so its hard for you to understand that change is a reality.
Communism is almost finished around the world and India. All they have is presence in 2-3 states and couple of Unis like JNU and JU.This ideology is finished.

He is pursuing PhD. What is the average age of PhD students? And he is not loaded like your cousins. Poor students dont have the luxury the rich can afford.

Its always up and down curve in this world and you never know when certain trend rises..I still feel that this rise of extremism in world (not only in India) will help left ideologies to grow not necessary with the name of communism.

So he is doing PHD for the past 5 years then. Nice to know.

Even PHD's who intend to graduate finish by 27 or 28.

Loaded like my cousins? All of us are middle class. We worked hard and got jobs. No freebies.

Not surprised that the right wing supporters are here mocking this brave young man. One Kanhaiya will be enough for 100s of you. May their stock rise. and great to see Kanhaiya stepping on the tails of modi toadies.

I am a strong critic of BJP and their Chaddi organizations.

I am also a strong critic of these Bozo student leaders who stay in college even when reaching 30's. All they do is instigate fights, beat up a few and get paid from the politicians.

In my college also, there were ABVP, AISF, SFI and a few other student parties. Thanks to them, half of the time college used to be closed. Most of them are in Mid 30's now without jobs. They have all opened up some small grocery shops or took up their dad's profession. Whenever there is Bundh/Strike by some political party, they bad mouth politicians as it is affecting their business. But when they were students, they did exactly the same.

Colleges and Universities are for studying. Not for joining Thug organizations and involve in strikes, Bundhs and vandalism.

typical for right they panic really quickly....even in Pakistan you see all these jamati parties start crying since Qadri is hanged because they feel threatened when their fellow is punished for the crime.

Just because you are not a BJP supporter doesn't stop you from being a classist. Both are harmful for the country, those who believe in their ultra religious nationalism, and those who want their class hegemony to be preserved and cannot tolerate a poor guy rising on the horizon.

Leftist ideology cannot grow because they inherently promote stifling freedom of people.Look around the world.3 communist states stand and all of them stifle liberty of their people.

stop mixing communism with freedom of living please..left ideology is not only communism it includes anarchists, socialists, progressives, anti-capitalists, anti-imperialists, democratic socialists, greens, left-libertarians, social democrats, and social liberals.

This is not your typical chinese or cuban communist. They are not talking about over throwing the state. They believe in the constitution, believe in freedom of speech. respect their political opponents. Dont differentiate based on caste and religion. This is what India needs. Not modi toadies.

Kanhaiya and his clown friends were giving speeches about breaking India. Now they changed their tune and trying to be India loving.

Do you live in India? Do you vote in Indian elections? Or just one of those na ghar ka na ghaat ka.

I did not vote in last elections. I was away from India. I live a few months in India every year. Such is my job.

What has that got to do with what Kumar and his clown comrades said?

Nothing to do with him. Just wanted to know if you matter a bit to India and are worth my valuable time.

All this controversy has earned nothing else but a firm seat for Kanahiya in CPI-M's future political hierarchy.
He will be Sitaram Yechury of the future.

We have the example of models of supposedly great communist govts. for 3 decades in the erstwhile flourishing state of West Bengal.

Anarchists is not left ... anarchist is simply anti-govt, anti system. It can be either left or right.

BJP have made Kanhaiya kumar a hero. It should be a wake up call for them. People voted for them in the name of development, not to build temples, enforce beef ban or act as the thekedars of desh bhakti.

The left would inspire if they only had "something" to show up for.Their methods have failed miserably not sure how long would India keep ruining itself based on these idealist power hungry idiots.

We have become too cynical. Lost our idealism. The world that we dreamt of. I include myself when I criticize others. Let us all pause for a moment and think, what kind of freedom we want? Can we have freedom when people are divided on religion and caste? Or when dissent is curbed with the excuse of nationalism? When the flag stops being the symbol of hope and becomes a shroud to cover the death of opinions?

JNU is a great place for students to engage in civilised political debates. Anyone who tries to destroy that atmosphere will look like idiots. Look at the support this guy is getting.

This

Who cares what someone eats or how much of Desh Bhakt someone is (as long as they don't talk about Breaking the country).

BJP better concentrate on real issues instead of making fuss about Beef, Temples and making irrelevant people like Kanhaiya Kumar heroes.

Nautanki saala

People who remember 90s when mandal commission issue started and students came on to roads. How fast it spread all over India.

In this case young people have literally no support for this joker.

It's clearly a case of pappu and paid media managed politics which will die of its own death soon.

It is interesting how the media is propping up Kanhaiya and also how apparent the divide in media has become.BJP gives the curious impression of a party still in opposition despite being in power.

More authoritarian anti free speech nonsense.

I’m no fan of commies but come on these are British era laws they’ve been charged under - laws created to quell political dissent. What they said back in 2016 has not weakened the Indian state one iota - in fact they shone a light on the JNU activists and exposed them foe what they were - so why go through this 3 years after the event?

The authorities are so stupid - this is just going to make Kumar and co into martyrs for many and receive the level of media attention, so close to an election, that even money can’t buy.

Do you really support these sedition laws? Politics is all about rebellion - hell all of the Indian freedom fighters were rebels.

Sure protect society from aggressive disharmony and violence but the state is going down a dangerous path here by prosecuting Kumar for this.

Politics is all about rebellion? you must be joking. Politics is also about administration. and when people create anarchy and threaten the state or the nation itself, they need to be made an example of. every traitor must be neutered and kept in solitary confinement and fed stale bread with escherichia coli.

This guy won't win anything or lose anything, but just cause a ruckus for years on end. Refer Raj Thackeray - and at least he has a political party.

What a waste of taxpayer's money - him at the age of 29 pursuing a PHD in African studies and failing his exams eleven times. Digest that for a second.

What is the average age to pursue a phd according to you? evidence that he failed eleven times, please.

Age 32.

And there are many such students. Shehla Rashid, Umar Khalid etc etc etc.

On research, the allegation of him failing 11 times seems to be fake news so I withdraw that comment.

So bharat tere tukde honge slogans should be tolerated. Right?

There is a reason sedition laws were kept by the constitution makers as part of the constitution in 1950.

He started his Phd in 2011. That should tell you something.

And anyways he is on taxpayers money to study. Not to go all around India doing political dramaybaazi.

It is only normal that those who come from unprivileged background and villages where it is considered a great achievement if you get to settle outside the village, will take longer than those who are from cities and have access to information.

He is supposed to be a scholar and intellectual

The taxpayers dont get to decide what political belief he has or whom he dates or what he does outside his classroom.

The likes of Umar Khalid should never be tolerated.
