What's new

Karachi King's (162/5) misery continues after a 6-run loss against Quetta Gladiators (168/7)

I've seen enough of Naseem Shah to know he would get smashed against good batsmen in the back end of an innings.

Pakistan will not have any chance of winning an ICC tournament if we're relying on him to deliver at the death. He's great with the new ball and he knows how to utilise conditions which are conducive for pace bowling but he'll get destroyed by top teams especially on good batting wickets.

Amir won Pakistan the 2009 WT20 and 2017 CT. I'll wait and see what Naseem does for Pakistan.

Naseem was among the most economical bowlers in the recent WC against 'good batsmen of top teams'

And Amir didn't win the WC or CT alone, it was a team effort and Amir just played his part.

Naseem is leagues above the current version of Amir.

Overs from Naseem and Hasnain turned the game in the end.

Truth is karachi won their only PSL due to babar batting and not due to imads so called captaincy

I hope so because we need younger players in the team.

This.

Babar absolutely dominated the tournament which KK won.

He was ahead of almost everyone in terms of runs scored, average and strike rate.

Even Imad knows that he has a PSL title to his name thanks to Babar's brilliance with the bat.

Hate to see my team at the bottom of the table

Heads need to roll at KK - top to bottom - rebuild the team

It’s a fact. They only won because of Babar.

Joke of a franchise..if yu continue with poor players poor captains and an overated Director this is what yu get..I mean their bowling attack is garbage ..

Wasim Akram must go as he has no clue what he is doing. Way too much politics there.

KK has no choice but to rebuild in the offseason.

Sarfaraz Ahmed | Quetta Gladiators skipper: We had the belief at the halfway stage that we could defend the total. The bowlers bowled brilliantly, especially in the last 3 overs. It is important to get some momentum early on in the league and hopefully Guptill can continue his form. It is not easy to bowl in the second innings but our bowlers were spot on with the execution and that made my job easy.

Martin Guptill | Player of the Match: After being 4 down in 7 overs is never ideal and to be able to do it at the end, big credit goes to Iftikhar. I tried to stay as deep as possible and that's what I tried to do. I tried to be positive as it was a difficult wicket to bat on.

Imad Wasim | Karachi Kings skipper: We bowled really well in the first 6 overs, we should have restricted them under 160 but that didn't happen. Few errors in the field and the drop catches didn't help either. We are bowling well in the powerplay, but not backing up in the middle overs.

Martin Guptill’s superlative century – the first of the HBL Pakistan Super League 8 – scripted Quetta Gladiators’ six-run win over Karachi Kings at the National Bank Cricket Arena on Friday evening. Guptill’s astonishing effort - that saw him rack up the joint-second highest individual score in HBL PSL history with 67-ball 117 - consigned Karachi Kings to their third straight defeat of the season.

Quetta Gladiators were in dire straits early in their innings when the opposing team’s skipper Imad Wasim ran riot with a scorching spell upfront returning three for 16 in his four overs. He began proceedings with a double-wicket maiden, grabbing the scalps of Jason Roy and Abdul Wahid Bangalzai for ducks before castling Umar Akmal with a sharp incoming delivery to leave Gladiators tottering at 13 for three in the third over.

Sarfaraz Ahmed could not offer much resistance and was sent back after a struggling 11-ball five on the first ball of the seventh over. It brought Iftikhar Ahmed to the crease with Guptill and the two batters added 69 runs for the fifth wicket in 52 balls before Iftikhar miscued a pull shot off Mohammad Amir to Imran Tahir.

What then followed was a blistering exhibition of quality striking from Guptill, who launched a death overs onslaught. The 36-year-old New Zealander reached his half-century in 44 deliveries and then accelerated to score the next 50 runs in just 18 balls. The highlight of his ballistic charge came in the penultimate over when he smashed three sixes and three fours off Andrew Tye. He clubbed 12 fours and five sixes in total as Quetta Gladiators posed 168 for seven.

In reply, Karachi Kings’ progress was beset by the loss of wickets at frequent intervals. Sharjeel Khan failed to add anything to his side’s score, falling to Mohammad Nawaz, while Haider Ali, also perishing for a duck, was bowled by Qais Ahmad.

The 11th over saw dismissals of Matthew Wade and Imad off Mohammad Hasnain’s bowling that left Karachi Kings struggling at 76 for five. Shoaib Malik then conjured a fighting half-century similar to his innings against Peshawar Zalmi on the same ground on Tuesday as the hosts took the game to the last over.

Malik played some delightful strokes in his 49-ball 71 not out embellished with eight boundaries and a solitary maximum. Irfan Khan made an unbeaten 37 off 26 deliveries with one four and three sixes. The unbroken 86-run stand between the two, however, was not enough to haul Karachi over the line as Naseem Shah (one for 29) and Hasnain (two for 29) gave away just six and seven runs respectively in the 18th and 19th overs leaving an improbable task of 24 runs in the last over of the game.

Scores in brief:

Quetta Gladiators 168-7, 20 overs (Martin Guptill 117, Iftikhar Ahmed 32; Imad Wasim 3-16, Aamer Yamin 3-37)

Karachi Kings 162-5, 20 overs (Shoaib Malik 71 not out, Irfan Khan 37 not out, James Vince 22; Mohammad Hasnain 2-29, Naseem Shah 1-29, Qais Ahmad 1-29)

Player of the match – Martin Guptill (Quetta Gladiators)

Sunday’s fixtures:

1400 – Multan Sultans v Islamabad United at Multan Cricket Stadium

1900 – Karachi Kings v Lahore Qalandars at National Bank Cricket Arena

Very happy for Sarfaraz today

Great win buddy

Not easy to defend a below par total in Karachi

Absolutely

Has been under a lot of pressure but he did his team proud with his captaincy. Getting in his best bowlers to kill the game early was very smart although as he said in the post game, wouldn't have been that smart if it hadn't come off.

Vintage Sarfaraz

I told you, he needs to be himself and not worry about being perceived negatively. He took some brilliant catches behind the stumps

Why? Karachi has a proud tradition of cricket and it needs a team to represent that.

Pakistan cricket and PSL need Karachi Kings to work. I am from Karachi and I have tried my best to support them ever since PSL started, but unfortunately they are only interested in playing politics.

Imad Wasim speaking to the press:

"We played poor cricket"

"We made mistakes which cost us in all three matches. We played good in phases but couldn't finish it off well"

"As a captain, I am not under pressure at all. Whether we lose or win, I can assure you that we are not going to give up till we are knocked out of the tournament"

"I will definitely give credit to Guptill. He played too good and took the match away from us"

"Our focus now is to win our upcoming matches and make a comeback. Good teams make comeback in tough times. We will try our best to qualify for playoffs," he added.

About Amir:

"A fast bowler should be aggressive. I don't think he does anything intentionally, it happens in heated moments"

"As far as there is no objection on him by match officials, I don't have any issue"

Major is one of the great posters we have and he has done a fantastic job of exposing the politics in this franchise in one of his recent threads where he is talking about how Karachi has let go so many good players in the past 5 years and how they are never interested in developing new and emerging talent. You should all read that thread.

Seriously, what went wrong for Karachi? Last year, everyone blamed Babar but this season is proving that Babar was only good thing in this team. If KK has a horrible season it will close down doors of Imad and Amir in Pak national team.

How was Babar the only good thing in this team?

Would have been hard on Guptill if they lost, man fully deserved the victory today.

Karachi surely does have a proud tradition of the game.

What I was talking about is the fact that the current KK set-up is most probably the most disliked in the tournament this year.

The fans have gone against the team because the squad is surrounded by a toxic environment, players who have tainted pasts, but still have the audacity to throw stones at others, players who stink of jealousy, and have openly made toxic statements against the most loved player of the country.

They are the reason why KK has gone from one of the most supported to easily the least supported franchise this season.
