What's new

Khalid Latif likely to face ban up to 10 years for spot-fixing in PSL [Update #935]

imagine.
A convicted spot fixer whose been through rehabilitation (ICC Courses etc etc), makes a comeback into the International team and now a colleague is suspended for "corruption"...

If this is true then, and having been in the changing room and played alongside someone whose literally been though it, how stupid can a player be to indulge in these practices???

Don't the players talk to each other in the changing rooms? Didn't Ami impart any of the knowledge, worldly experiences he gained over the last 6-7 years???

PCB should have shielded his players from a convicted fixer like Amir. Instead they pardon him and allow him inside the dressing room . Now PCB is facing the consequences

Does anyone remember video of sharjeel where he is saying that some people are blackmailing him and threating to upload his video

Does anyone remember video of sharjeel where he is saying that some people are blackmailing him and threating to upload his video

Yes... He looked scared in that. But that was a long time ago.

Maybe the bookies did their research on him and dug up something from his past.

When I heard Wilkins announce it during the match,I almost had a mini heart attack. Both of them should be banned for life if found to be guilty.

Why?

For PSL 1 year is enough after all Amir got 5 years for international cricket?

Who cares?

PCB did the right thing here. Its only day 2 of PSL and they have found this out.

This goes out as a warning to every other player that PCB won't allow such matters go unnoticed.

By this being made public, atleast we know that the next couple of games would be cleaned, as everyone could see the warning

I get what you're saying - but it doesn't seem like our players take such warnings seriously and still fall into this idiotic trap.

On the flip side - if they do end up being innocent - the damage the PCB would have caused to the PSL will be irreversible

I think it was necessary, because if they wouldn't have then there would have been a lot media conspiracies.

...well I'm glad we avoided that Bullet :13:

From Sethi's comment, looks like they are pretty much convinced that they are guilty. Also, you don't understand Pakistani sports media.

This is beyond depressing.

Sharjeel was our only weapon and he just took himself out.

Very irresponsible from Sethi to make such statements.

Nothing should be said until inquiry complete

Well there's the first corruption scandal of the PSL. These lucrative T20 leagues are a ripe target for corruption, and the UAE has a history with match-fixing as 90s fans will remember.

I will reserve judgement until further details emerge but I'm extremely disappointed, not only because of the abilities of the two players in question, but how Pakistanis never seem to learn their lesson.

The players are educated about bookies approaching them so a lack of information is not an excuse. They are made aware of the consequences of failing to report an approach let alone actually engaging in fixing. The sight of their own teammates being jailed for spot fixing only six years ago should be seared into their memory.

Of course its impossible to prevent every act of human greed, but the virus of corruption infects Pakistani society at every level from top to bottom. Enough of the tough talk, no more "soft corners" for corrupt players, zero tolerance should mean zero tolerance. If these charges are serious, the maximum penalties should be imposed.

Yes... He looked scared in that. But that was a long time ago.

Would you happen to have a link to this?

If it is true than expect 2 year ban. This case is similar to Mohammad Ashraful of Bangladesh , he was banned for 5 years but he managed to return to competitive cricket after 3.

Terrible this.

Hope it's not another case of career thrown away by a promising Pakistani cricketer or two.

imagine what Salman Butt is thinking :))

So close to test team(postive comments from Inzamam) and now won't be selected

Unfair to speculate at this stage, but from what I hear it doesn't look good for the players.

hmm...Looks like Sharjeel Career is over, he was the only positive sign from tour down under, what a waste, have to go back to square one

their zero tolerance is very encouraging, should be welcomed and appreciated ... But anything that needs professionalism don't expect from these bufffooooonss and PCB...

So when do things get clear over the issue?

Let's not jump to conclusions. For what we know they may be innocent. Pcb could merely be acting on intel, which doesn't necessarily mean it's concrete truth.

Not guilty until proven.

Very irresponsible from Sethi to make such statements.

when players are defying the PSL orders of not mingling with suspected people for the sake of the leagues and the players own reputation, and yet these guys are, then why should Sethi and co be labelled irresponsible?

At the end, you need to make examples, and this provisional suspension is the right way. Its just been only 1 day of PSL, and these players have got themselves in this mess

An hour after the news broke and we are on post number 110 with about 100 posts bashing the two players senseless without any idea of what happened :13:
Well at the very least sth happened so yes they are to blame

Poor Pakistani fans. WTH is wrong with Pakistani players ? Some of these players have no shame at all.

That video appeared to be 'embarrising' and once something is on the net it ain't ever coming off

just wonder how lucky Mohammad Sami was not to go out that night with his karachi fellas

still fuming. this is just 2010 again. which was basically 99. but then i didn't really know how the world worked in a way.

I was thinking the same. It's pretty amazing.

I am sorry to say but Pakistan have set a precedent that this sort of behaviour is deemed forgivable and that there is reclamation if you are caught.

No no one is implying Sharjeel or the other player are guilty of it, yet. But if they were I would blame the system more than them. When you don't have a system that punishes for such offenses in a way that puts fear into the players for even considering such a prospect no matter how lucrative it is, then you are just making it easier for them.

Match-fixing/Spot-fixing/inside info be it a domestic game/Intl game. Just ban the player for life from all forms, its short-sighted to think that a player is important than setting a precedent for a future generation of players.

This is beyond pathetic.

I'm hearing about them being banned for 2 years, is that correct?

In any case, downright embarrassing and heartbreaking. Ban them for life if guilty.

I hope thats not true.

Why don't you learn you lesson PCB!

Once there was Azharuddin, then there was a Jadeja..........Sreesanth........Still Chennai Super Kings happened........
I won't mind life bans if that is made the law but there could still be such incidence. 100 percent transparency is difficult to achieve, especially at league level. Nevertheless, efforts could be made to achieve that aim.

Well said. There is just too much easy money to make for trivial stuff.

agree you cannot stop it 100% but you can monitor and ban players for lifetime if they are remotely linked with match/spot fixing with solid proofs.

Speculation about players other than Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif will not be tolerated until further news emerges.

Maybe it is time to quit watching cricket

This!

These players have no talent, no work ethic, and on top of everything they are greedy and crooks. This is reflection of us as a nation. Why does it keep happening in Pakistan? Let's stop wasting our money and time on these fools. Nothing good will come out of our country in the next couple of decades.

If these guys are back in Karachi then they've already got lucky.

Last time I checked gambling is prohibited in the UAE and punishments there seem to be far more strict then in Pakistan.

lets stop being emotional. At least we have filtered two crooks out of our system.

They would have made so much money with PSL. Sharejeel was due to play in England T20 comp too. Why would he throw all that away. I just don't understand what goes through their minds.

Shaharyar Khan, the PCB chairman, said: “I must remind all players of their responsibilities in the fight against corruption. They must understand that if they even think they may have been the subject of a suspicious approach, it is their obligation under the PCB anti-corruption code to report it to an appropriate anti-corruption official as a matter of urgency.”
On the guardian

So they didn't report an approach? A tournament ban in that case to teach a lesson and back to normal.

That's why I want to hear interviews from these fixers.

Nothing complicate in this ,it easy extra moneys and if someone fix he doesn't do it just one time generally.
It's like tax evasion (not completely) people can make 100000 a month they will still try to avoid tax and fraud.

Wth... Hope this is just a precautionary thing and they haven't done anything wrong. Khalid is an experienced guy and Sharjeel would never do something like this. Sharjeel is the most important batsman in our Limited Overs teams

Just when we found a good opener

ahhh damn it i hope this is a misunderstanding

loosing Sharjeel sinks our odi team, he is more crucial than any other player

just shocking , these fools never learn

That's terrible terrible news, he is the only modern day batsman we have

Looks like they failed to report an approach by bookies. Is that a crime under any law? Can someone please dig that out? Don't want to lose Sharjeel at this juncture

Losing Sharjeel would be terrible. He's the only modern baseman in our team.

You guys have the wrong way of thinking.

Crucial or not to our ODI team - he should have known better and should not get any leniency for being a "crucial" member of the ODI squad. Everyone from an ATG to a random domestic cricketer should be treated and punished the same when it comes to fixing.

That is a completely different matter.

If Butt performs - he should be in consideration. Back then - we did not have such strict standards and training and coaching with regards to bookies or even an anti-corruption unit. Anyhow - Butt already served his time and completed his punishment.

If guilty - Sharjeel and Latif should be given harsher punishments as they should be full aware of the consequences of fixing after the fate of the trio. Looks like they did not learn a single lession....

Wasn't old enough in 2010 to know how big fixing was and how a real fan felt.

Unfortunately, 2010 has been repeated and I feel like freaking ****.

Itna paisa mil raha tha ** T20 Leagues aur International cricket se aur kia chahiye.

If he's crying on the plane than I doubt he's innocent.

If he wasn't guilty he probably would've posted a video on facebook in desperation like last time.

Who knows, that video might have something to do with this fixing scandal.

But if he's found guilty, a part of me will die. I haven't felt this bad even after losing to India in WC matches.

Betaa koee hope nahee hai. Ronaa shuroo karde. :(

Looks very bad indeed, plus the reports I am getting form a few sources tells me that there are three other players who might be involved in this - I can't name them from reasons you guys would know but one of them played very recently in a Pakistan game.

I blame this on the 90s man !! had we curbed the evil back then, 2010 and now this would never have happened :69:

Apparently more player are involved, a Facebook page claimed 3 others. All I will say is that one of these guys lacked a brain on the pitch with his daily job. So no suprise he's involved.

Won't mention the name as mods won't allow.

I agree, very disheartening the recent debacle; we can only take so much.

lets stop being emotional. At least we have filtered two crooks out of our system.

A few other names are being mentioned in this scandal, it seems like we might get rid of more than just two "crooks".

Ban both of them for life. No mercy this time for these horrible fixers. We already have one playing in our team and it makes my blood boil seeing him in green colours. This time no mercy.

I want to wait till it's proved but part of my heart has sank. I really didn't expect this from Sharjeel.

In 2010 I was too young but now that I see it, I know why people didn't want Amir back.

May be Sharjeel did not fix anything, he might have been approached by someone suspicious and got suspended for failing to report.

Most posters should stop their dramaybaazi of my heart sank this and that.

You are the same lot who defended amirs comeback so wjy cry now.

Even if the player gets banned, after a year or two most will be crying that he should return

Word around town is Sherjeel khan had a £70'000 offer on the table from Essex to play the t20 league this summer.

whats worryingly similar is how Amir back in 2010 had a similar offer signed with Lancashire to play the county season with them before the spot fixing saga broke out.

weird trend, why are the youngest and the brightest stars from pak cricket risking so many lucrative contracts and sponsorship deals in world cricket for match fixing money.

the money in matt fixing must really be huge

It really isn't. Amir was offered £8k. That is just pocket change. Some of these players are village idiots and don't understand risk vs reward.

Just listening to Sethi right now and he comes across off as more level headed than Sheryar. He said there is sufficient evidence for them to suspect these player to have been involved in fixing. However, let's hope these guys are innocent.

Apparently there was a big gambling syndicate trying to contact players and the authorities were aware of that, sharjeel and khalid met a suspicious man after the first match.
Not sure if 100% correct btw
