Kusal Mendis - A new ray of hope for Sri Lanka

Got embarrassed by Siraj ie clean bowled in the Asia Cup Final like a tail ender

On a serious note, he is a serious underperformer.

He should be right up there with the best players in the world. In my opinion, he is the best pure batsman Sri Lanka have produced since Sangakkara and Mahela.

He should be averaging 40+ in all formats. His current numbers don’t do justice to his ability.

At 28, he could be entering his prime and he could make amends in the next few years.
Sometimes your company defines your attitude towards work.
He is already the best batter in the team and I don’t think he has the motivation to get to the next mile as his place is pretty secured.

If he was there along with Sanga,Jaya and Dilshan he would have worked a lot harder, probably the same thing happened with Mathews and Chandimal, both of them are world class too.

One can say the same thing about Babar, the lack of competition for quality batsmen in the team has bred complacency in his game.

He is self motivated.
If averaging 58 is complacency then I don’t know what more you need.

Jayasuriya is smiling back at Mendis for what he did today. Brought those memories back.

Kusal Mendis played his heart out, scoring 76 off 42 balls.

76(42) 4 fours and 8 sixes SR 180.95

The best batsman produced by Sri Lanka since Sangakara and Jayawardene.

This guy is absolute garbage and everytime I see him bat I am reminded of that fact.

If you consider the amount of investment Sri Lanka have put in him and how much he has actually delivered, you realize what a waste of time he has been.

For me, he is their version of Umar Akmal.
Incredible insight.

Fantastic century by Kusal Mendis

What a knock, smashed hundred from just 65 balls

Fastest 100 for a Sri Lankan in a World Cup

Kusal Mendis achieves his 28th ODI fifty but is dismissed for 61(65) against Afghanistan in the 2nd ODI. However, his struggle with the ability to rotate the strike is evident, and it's an area he needs to focus on. A straightforward solution could be for Kusal Mendis to either open the batting (if there isn't anyone else) or bat at no. 5 or 6, as he seems to be putting unnecessary pressure on the lineup.

Kusal Mendis slams a 28-ball fifty against Bangladesh in the First T20I. He scored 59(36). Such an explosive batter he is. What a find for Sri Lanka.

A T20I career-best for Kusal Mendis

What a fine knock by him. Should've gone on to get a century. He scored 86(55) against Bangladesh in 3rd T20I

59(75) for Kusal Mendis against their arch rivals of late Bangladesh in the first ODI between the both sides in 2024.

Sri Lankan batter Kusal Mendis has found himself in the spotlight not just for joining the IPL, but for the way he left the Pakistan Super League (PSL) high and dry. In a tweet that raised more than a few eyebrows, Mendis wrote: “Unfortunately when I had to leave @OfficialPSL suddenly I had to leave my kitbag behind, Tried everything to get it down to join @ipl but nothing worked, when this amazing Sri Lankan Mr. Wayne who is living in Pakistan, flew all the way to Colombo to bring my kitbag, amazing human.” While he poured praise on a kind stranger for delivering his kit, what stood out was the glaring omission of any acknowledgement, let alone regret, for abandoning his PSL side, the Quetta Gladiators, mid-tournament.

Despite having prior commitments with the franchise, Mendis chose to pull out after regional tensions escalated, a decision many deemed understandable at the time. However, his quick switch to the IPL, coupled with a tweet that almost reads like a celebration of the move, hasn’t gone down well with PSL loyalists. As he now gears up to debut for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, replacing Jos Buttler, it’s clear that Mendis left more than just a kitbag behind; he left unfinished business and a few sour tastes in Pakistan.

Every time Kusal Mendis scores an ODI hundred, Sri Lanka triumphs. Today was no different!

He has been an important player for SL after the legends retired.

Very attacking batter.

The difference maker for Sri Lanka

He is at the age that batters traditionally peak. Hopefully SL will see the best of him over next 2-3 yrs
