Kusal Mendis played a remarkable innings in the first Test against Australia at Palekelle. His 176 was crucial in ensuring that Sri Lanka had enough on the defend

TOday again he played excellent inning Against quality Aus bowling side .Even Chris Woakes came into his own in england series. But he played a couple of gritty innings on that tour

Do you think Srlianka have found great young talent or he will fade away like alot of young srilankan player have in the past like Dinesh Chandimal or lahiru thirimanne

Chandimal hasn't exactly faded away , averages 45 in test cricket and I believe will get better with time

tbh Chandimal has been ok. Hit a hundred in England too. He, Mendis and Matthews can form a strong core along with the new spinners. Cricket needs a strong SL side.

Was talking about his limited over record where he only average 33 in odi cricket and average of 17 in t20 considering who people where hyping him it is not up there where it should be
but in test he is very good no doubt about that

Mendis is a serious talent. As is Sandakan. Along with Chameera, they make SL a fun team to watch now.

Chandimal's average is boosted by bullying minnow Bangladesh of pre 2015 and Indian phast bowlers like Ishant Sharma.

This guy is seriously talented and the impressive thing is he score quickly either it is test or odi

Two 50+ score in a row for him .well played Kusal getting better and better

Could tell as soon as he scored that 176 against Starc and co where his team was doing terribly...

What a inning today 166 notout at the strike rate of 68 :bow:i hope tomorrow he gets his maiden double hundred

I have never watched him bat but he seems to be doing amazingly well.

Is he real ATG material?

Heard so many good things about him.

Sif you know very hard to predict that but yeah he is extremely talented who likes to dominate the

opposition with aggressive batting

Of course not asking to predict.

Asking whether he is an all round bat who has the potential?

He played a brute of a knock against Aus on a rank turner last year. He played some good knocks in SA too right?

yeah he has potential

that knock against aussie was very good but unfortunately he has dip in form after that series. He was

struggling in every format but he has come back in form today which is good

in overseas he was poor but he is still young and can be super star for srilanka who can play all the format

This kid is quality. SL are investing in him despite his FC record not being too flash but they've definitely identified a real talent in him and are willing to give him a long rope. Had a tough tour of SA but as a young Asian player that isn't a surprise, would've learnt a lot from it hopefully just like Babar did from the Tests against Australia.

He edged his first ball and was caught behind but the bowler overstepped just by a fraction. A good innings but a lucky one.

It's kind of impossible to score a hundred against Bangladesh without some luck. Their attack is quality.

Very much inconsistent, struggled badly in SA recently

Though being very young he has lot of time to improve

missed out on a double ton, but very well played for 194 against Bangaal

Bump.!!!!

Scored brilliant hundred in odi match against ban today that too after a very slow start .he needs to be

more consistent with bat talent is their

Guy has been excellent for them. Clutch player. Classical player. Ideal no. 3

bump

Brilliant inning unlucky to miss out the century .A classy player improving day by day

He has alot of potential. Is good defensively and can attack when required.Just requires more consistency and, dare I say it,he can be the next Sri Lankan great.

Kusal, Chandimal and Angelo Mathews are all very exciting played but inconsistent

He has improved a lot. He was an overseas player for Southgate (which is in London) a couple of seasons ago and was only average my friend played against him had him dropped off his bowling

Had a bit of Sachin in him. I think Sri Lankans increase their age unlike Pakistanis, every player looks much younger than their listed age.

Mendis' innings actually helped Sri Lanka achieve a victory. Can rotate the strike AND find the boundary consistently. Something which Babar hasn't been able to do yet.

Babr averages 54 with SR of 9 with 5 100s and he hasn't even played 30 ODIs yet. How can you say he is below Mendis ? Babar is your countrymen. Shocking.

the knock Mendis played vs Starc and Co Babar can only dream off Mendis is the next SL batting great not Chandimal.

Gunathalika is the real deal. This guy will play second fiddle to him.

Kusal Mendis Discussion Thread

First took notice of his talent in 2016 when he hit 171 vs Australia. Very young at 21 or just turned 22 and has already played 20 Tests. So he will be an experienced guy leading SL's batting for the next 15 years.

but he seems to have hit a bit of a rough spot. his average is only in the mid 30s despite two big tons, and while he hit 194 vs Bangladesh, he was lucky to have not been out for a golden duck due to a no ball. Also missed scoring easy runs vs Zimbabwe recently.

but the boy has undoubted levels of talent.

Has a lot of ability. In a bad patch now, but he needs more time invested in him. Got to remember that he is only 22 and was brought into test cricket after only 15 or so first class games. Needs to be persisted with.

He is one of those potential picks Somya Sarkar is another one their FC stats were mediocre when they started.Has already played an Atg knock against Starc n co consistency will come in time.

He is the second best batsman in the SL setup after Mathews, with potential to surpass even him.He will improve with time.

he's an elegant player and he has the ability to play the long innings. He's just out of form right now though.

Stick with him and he will come good. Has the ability to take the game away from the opposition on a good day.

Was very impressed by his knock against the Australians last year. Looks a fluent strokeplayer.

People mentioning his rough patch of form - given the chaos in SL cricket at the moment and his young age these things are to be expected.

Some would argue he's ahead of Babar Azam in his development right now, at least in Tests.

2 of his centuries are almost double centuries, not bad but rest of their team needs to perform. It was so painful to watch.

He got destroyed by Hasan Ali for mocking his celebration. Don't mess with " The Generator Man ".

Haha good one.

But seriously he shouldn't have been dropped. He's a talented player who needs backing.

Story of a every Sri Lankan wonderboy. Remember when Kusal Perera was the next Jajyasuriya, Thirimana was the next Sanga and Chandimal was the next I don't even know what. Chameera bowled a 149KM killer delivery to Yuvraj when I first watched him and he is trundling now. Dickwella seamed like a another wonderboy when he played vs South Africa in T20, dilscooped Rabada couple of times. Sri lankan players need to be managed well, they just fade away. Poor management but players should also take responsible.

Doing a great job in this run chase vs BD in the Asia Cup

This guy is absolute garbage and everytime I see him bat I am reminded of that fact.

If you consider the amount of investment Sri Lanka have put in him and how much he has actually delivered, you realize what a waste of time he has been.

For me, he is their version of Umar Akmal.

Should've been out early. But, BD gave him life after life.

He is a good hitter though.

Kusal Mendis brings up his 8th Test hundred in the 1st Test vs Ireland.

Pak fans will dismiss his runs because he scored it against Ireland.According to them Ireland is on par with a school team so these runs don’t count.

he is one of the best in Srilanka right now, he knows how to operate the game smoothly without taking any chances which he shown quite well tonight.
All the best for Final!

Genius as I always say. Incredible insight.

On a serious note, he is a serious underperformer.

He should be right up there with the best players in the world. In my opinion, he is the best pure batsman Sri Lanka have produced since Sangakkara and Mahela.

He should be averaging 40+ in all formats. His current numbers don’t do justice to his ability.

At 28, he could be entering his prime and he could make amends in the next few years.

Good eye for talent.
