One should play on at least senior level county cricket in England, Australia or South Africa to be able to get full advantage of the Signature bat.
The reason is the quality of cricket balls that hit the ultra expensive piece of timber.
Or unless of course, if you are gifting as a souvenir or decoration piece? In which case make sure you buy only the main Signature bat. Usually it's a set of two bats, the $700.00 match bat, and an al-cheapo one with the same weight and feel for net practice since its a sin to take the orginal Signature bat to nets and play with old hard and brittle balls.

Have you had experience with the signature?

Last time when I inquired about getting one (back in 2001) I was quoted $1200.00 by James. It was a set of two. The main Signature and a practice bat, all packed in a special case.
I said to myself, now I am not THAT big of a player.
So I decided not two.

Later a friend told me, imagine the feeling of fulfillment if you'd buy a regular bat for a couple of hundred dollars and donated the $1000 to a poor family in Pakistan. You could have fed a thousand people.

I understand what your friend told about donating the money to a poor family instead of paying close to 1000$ for a bat. Even I am not a big player, but its the passion to have the best as life is short mate. 1000$ investment is once in a life time for me. Hope he enjoys it.
