Labour's Sadiq Khan elected London mayor [Update Post #89]

Elections: Labour's Sadiq Khan elected London mayor

Sadiq Khan has been elected the new Mayor of London - boosting Labour after it slumped in Scotland's elections.

Mr Khan is the city's first Muslim mayor, after beating Tory Zac Goldsmith by 1, 310,143 votes to 994, 614.

The result bolsters leader Jeremy Corbyn after Labour were beaten into third in Scotland by the Tories and lost English councillors.

Mr Khan's victory ends eight years of Conservative control of City Hall. The former Labour MP and minister, 45, becomes London's third mayor after Mr Johnson and Ken Livingstone.

In his victory speech, Mr Khan referred to his humble origins on a council estate and said he had never imagined that "someone like me could be elected as mayor of London," promising to be a mayor "for all Londoners".

He said the campaign had not been without controversy, but added: "I am so proud that London has today chosen hope over fear".

He added that the "politics of fear is not welcome in our city".

Mr Khan took 1,310,143 votes after second preferences were taken into account, beating Conservative Zac Goldsmith into second place on 994,614. His tally gave him the largest personal mandate of any politician in UK history.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn led congratulations on Twitter using the hashtag YesWeKhan and telling the new mayor: "Can't wait to work with you to create a London that is fair for all".

Mr Khan distanced himself from Mr Corbyn during the campaign, pledging to freeze fares on the capital's transport network and build more affordable housing, but also promising to champion business and cut taxes on enterprise.

His victory follows a controversial campaign in which the Conservatives were accused of trying to smear Mr Khan by accusing him of sharing a platform with extremists - tactics defended by ministers but questioned by some in the party.

Mr Goldsmith's sister Jemima has criticised how his campaign was run, while former Conservative Cabinet minister Baroness Warsi called it an "appalling dog whistle campaign".

Ms Goldsmith tweeted: "Sad that Zac's campaign did not reflect who I know him to be - an eco friendly, independent-minded politician with integrity."

She also congratulated Mr Khan, calling him a "great example to young Muslims".

the problem i face, as do many others, is that i cant think of any party that holds a balanced set of sensible principles. i like corbyns social philosophy, but his economic ones are puerile and fatal for the country. i like the economic policies of the tories (relatively speaking), but their social philosophy is bordering on extreme right wing and is repulsive.

.....yeah, I pretty much agree. In the end I voted for Caroline Pigeon.

Galloway got 1.4% of the vote - must have been a late surge for him as he wasn't cracking the 1% barrier at lunch time today.

Congratulations to Sadiq Khan. Not a Labour man nor a London man myself, but sounds like a deserved win.

Galloway should retire.

Being the Grandson of a Pakistani immigrant bus driver myself I have massive respect and admiration for this achievement.

Well done.

London Has Fallen : Sadiq Khan’s First 100 Days as Mayor

https://mediadiversified.org/2016/03/14/london-has-fallen-sadiq-khans-first-100-days-as-mayor/

As I travelled at high speed through Zone 1 on the Jubilee Line in the greatest city in the world a nascent thought germinated: cancer has taken Bowie and Lemmy, but it didn’t kill Jimmy Savile, which in anyone’s book is reason enough to declare a long and costly war on cancer. Yet according to a cursory study of New York Times articles, Muslims are worse than cancer.

How did this visceral fear of Muslims come to pass? Who cares – I want to concentrate on what the first 100 days of MP Sadiq Khan’s turn as Mayor will look like. Because if anything, smears in the Tory press that he is a closet Islamist hell bent on turning London into a Khanistan with him as de facto Caliph have only been constrained by our PC libel laws.

Never mind that Khan lent a quote to The Sun on their 1 in 5 Muslims are terrorist sympathisers front page and voted in Parliament to bomb a Muslim majority country. Forget even his work with the LGBT community and vote for same sex marriage, something our current Education secretary voted against, Sadiq Khan is definitely an Islamist.

Amidst all the hot takes on how Trump won’t be the Republican party’s nominee and now that he has been nominated, how catastrophic he’ll be as president, we have ignored the Islamist rise of Sadiq Khan, MP of Tooting twinned with Raqqah. At least with Trump, he will build things like a great wall. With Sadiq Khan there is always the chance he might just blow things up. After all, as a Zac Goldsmith mayoral campaign worker told a constituent, he is a “Muslim.”

So what would the first 100 days of a Caliphate of London look like? Red letter boxes painted black to make London welcoming to veiled women from Saudi Arabia. The banning of all hate preachers like Nigel Farage or at the very least do what we did with Gerry Adams in the 80s, and dub his voice with that of a refugee every time he spouts his bile.

It’s not all doom and Islamism though, this dystopian future comes with some benefits as well:

There will be feminist-only carriages, the dudebros will be no-platformed at the platform, and we already have a name for it, the Elizabeth line. Because in Sadiq’s eyes, you’re all Queens. Going from home to work shouldn’t resemble a Hunger Games battle for survival, dodging being accosted by angry men who inhabit the comment section of articles written by women.

Khan will also cut the zip carriage thing between London and South London that Boris spent 25 million on. We have to recognise that there is little value in visiting South London, apart from seeing Beyonce at the 02. This is not a strictly Islamist policy but sensible pragmatism.

Cat Stevens, or Yusuf Islam as he is now known, will compose an anthem for London; the remix will feature Zayn Malik. Oxford Street will not only be paved over to cut car pollution, but will be carpeted like a Mosque, so people can give thanks in prayer for the 75% off sale at Top Shop.

Sadiq Khan will have a memorial for Princess Diana on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square because even though Queen Elizabeth stripped her of the HRH moniker, she will always be a princess for a whole generation of Muslim women.

Sadiq will also end the blight of ugly skyscrapers like the Shard which hold little religious value, and insist all future tall buildings resemble giant minarets.

Jamie Oliver with his overpriced lubbly jubbly bleu will be told to do one. Auntie Bushra with her Gharam Masala will be advising on school dinners in London.

Imagine bland school dinners being replaced with dishes from the Islamic world: Jollof Tuesday, Shawarma Thursday and of course Curry Friday. Hot cross buns will be banned and replaced with Paratha with a filling of your choice, call it an Islamist Crêpe if you like.

Don’t believe Britain First: Christmas will not be cancelled, but you will get Friday afternoons off to spend time in Weatherspoons drinking Arabica coffee.

Islam is not just a religion but a complete way of life, so Westminster Abbey will no longer be the nexus for Royal weddings. That honour will be transferred to East London Mosque.

Everyone will pay a standardised tax plus 2.5% extra for multinationals, Bankers and non-Muslims.

This may feel like an overtly ambitious Islamistfesto by Sadiq Khan. But he will encourage Muslims to breed and thus forever swing the vote for a perpetual Muslim Mayorship for London. This will irk those who warn us of a Muslim baby demographic ticking timebomb (Mohammed is already the most popular baby name) but think about it – if Muslims are making love that means they’re not making Jihad.

If this all seems a bit farfetched, then imagine being a Muslim in the spotlight of Muslim scare stories in the press.

Bigoted blind spots from the media when it comes to visible Muslims are ubiquitous. Should they have gone to Specsavers, one wonders? Because having your humanity constantly on trial with bizarre smears which accuse you of being in an ISIS book club can be draining. They did it to Baroness Warsi; they’re doing it with Sadiq Khan now.

If you don’t know, now you know.

Happy with the result. Congrats Sadiq.

I'm glad the hysteria is over. No doubt now the national media tune will turn 180 degrees and we will get some sensible discussion once reality has set in.

Have been arguing with Americans on another board that this is not creeping Islamicisation of the UK and Caliph Sadiq won't have the rest of us paying for dhimmi.

Told them he is a thoroughly secular bloke who never mentions God once (unlike Cruz), has spoken out against British burkha-wearers, and allegedly had a fatwa raised against him by a Bradfordian imam for his support for same-sex marriage.

Fell on deaf ears. Binary thinkers, those Yanks.....

Congrats to Sadiq Khan
Finally some positive news about Pakistani ppl in UK, hopefully he ll b good mayor for city of London

Many of them have never stepped foot outside of their trailer parks, what do they know?

Hearty Congratulations to Mr Khan. He has clearly worked hard and deserves his victory.

He may well preside over the fall of London if the UK decides to exit the EU, but he can celebrate for now.

I will not support an individual just because he has a Muslim name, but only if he is honest, sincere, truthful, transparent, humble, knowledgeable and wise - characteristics most politicians are devoid of. Before Muslim media and people get excited, they ought to await Khan's policies, and see whether he attends to the needs of the poor, homeless, vulnerable and disabled, regardless of their background and ethnicity.

He is a sell out unfortunately so expect him to serve his Zionist masters

He is a sell out unfortunately so expect him to serve his Zionist masters

He is a typical politician, so what do you expect? Are politicians in Pakistan, or Muslim countries, pure, honourable and sincere? No. Are politicians anywhere in the world pure, honourable and sincere? No. So why would you even think Sadiq Khan might be different?

He hasn't even been in the job a day and you already say he is dishonorable and insincere?

Earlier you said:

Well conversely before people write him off as a zionist puppet, dishonourable etc perhaps we should await Khan's policies "and see whether he attends to the needs of the poor, homeless, vulnerable and disabled, regardless of their background and ethnicity" etc.

Btw nice to see you back posting on here. :)

Firstly, thank you for being so welcoming! :)

Secondly, I did not mean to imply or infer that Sadiq Khan is 'dishonourable and insincere' - if people came away with that impression after reading my post, then I do apologise.

My second comments were supposed to tie in with the first: namely, that I honestly do not believe it makes a jot of difference what religion or ethnicity a politician may be, because most tend to be the same, or at least, exhibit similar characteristics.

Regarding the new mayor of London: indeed, we must await his policies to determine wherein his priorities lie.

Good to be discussing issues of importance with you again!

Turns out loads of our top politicians are bus drivers’ kids

Welcome to British politics in 2016, everyone. It’s pretty awesome (in some ways at least).
ICYMI, Sadiq Khan was elected as the new Mayor of London last night, after a landslide victory saw him get 57 per cent of the votes.

The result makes history in a few ways. First of all, Sadiq got the largest mandate of any British mayoral election ever.
He is also the capital’s first British Asian mayor, and its first Muslim mayor.
Sadiq also grew up a council estate in south London, and is the son of a Pakistani bus driver.

After Sadiq’s victory, Tory business secretary Sajid Javid tweeted this

https://twitter.com/sajidjavid/status/728677799356211200?ref_src=twsrc^tfw

And then Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, former chairman of the Conservative Party, added this
https://twitter.com/SayeedaWarsi/status/728704683871711232?ref_src=twsrc^tfw

Which led conservative activist Tim Montgomerie to quip…

https://twitter.com/montie/status/728705783043592193?ref_src=twsrc^tfw

Sadiq also laughed: ‘You wait ages for a Pakistani bus driver’s son to come along. Then two come along at once.’
He may have been joking around, but the new mayor is right – we have been waiting a long time for this kind of visible social mobility.

Here’s hoping our top politicians – across the parties – inspire the next generation.

You must have missed out the bit when he was a defence lawyer for both both baber Ahmed and majid nawaz when he was locked up in Egypt
Boris Johnson also called London the 8th emirate of the world and talked about being a grandchild of Muslims

Londonistan has existed for 8 years already

Congrats to him, I voted for him as my 2nd preference despite him being generally insipid and uninspiring. I see one of his first acts as Mayor was to attend a Shoah Memorial event, I wonder if he will attend a Nakba Remembrance Day event which is May 15th; I won't hold my breath.

Also it's incorrect as some are stating that he's the first Muslim mayor of a European city as Rotterdam holds that distinction since 2009.

George Galloway, who was also running to be mayor, crashed out of sight with just 1pc of the vote. When the Iraq war was ongoing, or at least fresh in the memory, Gallo*way’s fiery rhetoric att*racted so much support in constituencies with large numbers of Mus*lim voters that he was twice elected to parliament. But when a Muslim emerged as the frontrunner in the race for mayor, Gal**loway’s support base slipped away. Galloway is now considering standing for parliament again — this time in the South London Tooting seat that Sadiq Khan will vacate now he is mayor.

The below is story of Indian liberals as well:

here is one final irony worth pondering. Many of London’s liberals, especially in the elite, make no secret of their hostility to religion particularly when it surfaces in public life. But, for some reason, they are more willing to accept religious belief in minority communities.

His comments are aimed at the vote base which is still overwhelmingly white. You will see similar remarks from many politicians around election time, then the issue will be quietly dropped.

In any case, was he physically attacked as you suggested he may be? I haven't read any news of it so I assume not.
Doesn't change the fact he's correct that educated Pakistanis in metros for the most part are more modern than British Pakistanis.

My experience is the same.

The mayor is right to point these things out. Hopefully the death threats against him for being so brave from Bradford Pakistani imams stop.

Two of the frontrunners for the Labour candidacy for the seat are Khans as well.

Complete odds:

Rosena Allin-Khan 10/11

Martin Smith 4/1

Naushabah Khan 4/1

Mike McLoughlin 5/1

Jasvir Singh 10/1

Labour win 1/4

Conservative win 11/4

George Galloway 33/1

Liberal Democrats 100/1

Green Party 100/1

lol, look at these idiots acting like it would make a difference in their lives all the way back in Pakistan.... 'Defeating a Jew' obsessed with non muslims, pretty much sums up why the muslim world is in the mess it is in currently.

True is really pathetic how badly these guys in Pakistan are obsessed with Jew hatred.

I can understand Arabs being upset with Jews based on the Palestine issue but Pakistan with their Passports and "defeat jewz" lol its a bit much.

When will people these these fellows realize they'll never be made honorary Arabs despite their best intentions?

Don't forget the love of Hitler that runs rampant on Pakistani social media. #HeilHitler was trending in Pakistani Twitter when the Gaza siege was going on 2 years ago.

Good god - I just googled this and youre certainly right. The brownie points these guys are hoping to earn with imaginary Arab allies is mindblowing.

Typical backward, extremely close minded thought. I bet even Sadiq Khan would be ashamed of that thought process.

Absolutely. Wonder how these guys would feel if they found out the first place he went as mayor was a holocaust memorial.

None of you got it. These people are Nawaz Sharif's party members taking a dig at Imran Khan for his support for Zac Goldsmith. PML N calls Imran Khan a Jew agent and that's why they especially wrote the word Jew. This gathering of a couple of people has nothing to do with Zac Goldsmith or Jews or even Sadiq. You can see on the right sight of the banner, "Lead by PMLN (Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz)" Pakistan's Federa' minister had been saying, "PMLN won (because Saqdiq Khan won) and the Jew agent Imran Khan lost because Zac Goldsmith lost". LOl
Pathetic isn't it? and then people ask why we hate PMLN. Idiots can't even spell his name right.

Don't notice him most of the time. He's an irrelevance. Just look at the look he replaced.

So Londoners, 8 months after taking office, how's the Mayor doing?

Judge him after 2 years I think.... ken already implemented the easy revolutionary ideas. Wish the mayor gets rid of these silly cycle lanes that seem to be taking precedence

Khan has handled the aftermath of the London Bridge attack like a true statesman. I believe he'll watch, from the outside, the Labour Party implode after Thursday's election and then position himself for a run at the top job in a few years time. #Sadiq2022

Didn't he at one point call Majid Nawaaz and the people at Quilliam "Uncle Toms" and then retracted it when he got himself into a position of power?

He is a hardcore Zionist so that could help him but no don't see it.

4 attacks in one year - should he resign?

Preventing terror attacks is largely the role of agencies like MI5 and GCHQ - Khan is not responsible for these agencies. He's responsible for the police in London and if they've failed in the aftermath of an attack (no one has accused them of this recently) then sure the buck stops at the Mayor.

What can he do ? As Gabbar Singh says, Sadiq Khan is only a city Mayor with no authority over the intelligence services who are better placed to intercept these threats.

Has done nothing of any note for London

Just giving pointless interviews

Looks physically drained from the job and at times a rabbit caught in the headlights like he doesn't want to be there

dont think we will get another Muslim Mayor anytime soon in London. Sadiq Khan's tenureship will always have negative connotations attatched to it

Sadiq has been a bloody embarrassment. Guy is more angry with Donald Trump than the actual terrorists.

Look forward to seeing Part and Parcel posters around London next election. Guy has crushed the chance of any Muslim or minority for that matter becoming a mayor anytime soon.

The mayor has limited control in such cases so making him a scapegoat is useless. It's a political way of "sweeping things under the carpet" and hoping it works out.

The next mayor would face the same problems.

Plus, if campaigns are won on a grossly misinterpreted quote than that says a lot about the voting population's IQ.

He is not going all the way though, not with Brexit.

What's the job of the Mayor?Only Law and Order and awarding infra rights?Seems like a pretty dumb job tbh why can't someone from ruling party just put a man incharge for the same.
