What's new

Lahore Qalandars (144/5) defeat Islamabad United (143/9) by 5 wickets in a thrilling encounter

Too many runs given away by Shadab. This is my first time watching him play as captain. Looks like he feels burdened, he is rushing through between balls and overs with field placements, losing focus on his bowling. But he is a good player, I am sure he will get better at managing captaincy and his own performance.

He was focused first two overs but in the third he indeed looked to be rushing and with mind elsewhere.

Have to say home grown hitter of LQ Sohail Akhtar looks better and more sensible in most of his innings than finishers like Asif and co.

Or batting!?. Him and faheem are the most typical examples of pseudo all rounders

Neither of them are proper all rounders, and include Imad, but they are useful contributers more often than not delivering reasonably in one or other discipline.

Poor captaincy from Shadab.

Should have brought Ifthi on for an over or two.

Wicket is ideal for spinners and pace off the ball.

Yes. And this being the first match after a long gap also matters. I think, Shadab, along with other players would be rusty; they would all get better in their roles as the tournament goes on.

Agreed, but at least Faheem is working on his game and has improved as a batsman (Test)

Shadab is just horrible and we made him the VC of our T20I and Odi sides. What kind of planning is that?

Such players go missing in demanding situations of weak skill set. I think all rounder must have match winning ability in at least one discipline.

In T20s mini all rounders are O as long as the team has proper batsmen b4 them.. Imad, Fahim and Shadab have won quite a few matches between them. Ideally we should have a proper all rounder but we have one in domestics atm.

He's only regressed since he started so i think criticism is justified
Past year and half atleast he has been injured and keep making comebacks partially injured. So let's judge him once he played a full year I jury free and see if he is maturing with age or not His captaincy has been quite good, it was good even when he captained Northern

On what basis have they appointed him as babar's deputy I think no one can understand. May be he talks a good game

Can’t hear even the artificial crowd noise
Saj please let WK know, they could do better with the sound broadcast. This was actually a decent match but it’s lacking serious atmosphere, even if it is artificial

As poor as our batting reserves are, we keep finding these more than useful pace bowlers!

I know I don't have much to back this up with, but let me make a very bold statement here.

Faheem will become a fantastic all rounder for Pakistan in all formats if we persist with him. Mark my words.

Faheem is one of those players who will take his sweet time, but will come good eventually.

Ok. Really had no idea he's been struggling with injury for so long.

DHONI183, I am going to stop playing that competition with you as I just can't win a game no matter what I do. How the hell is Lahore losing today? lol

I had lohare winning to !

Captain should have bowled himself. Hussain talat just serves pies after pies

Good match to resume PSL.

Lol at Talat’s bowling.

Any match that goes to the last ball is a good one. This match too, although IU threw it away in the final over.

Shadab bottled it as a captain

This guy is supposed to be the VC of Pakistan?

All shdab needed was bowl homaelf get tim david on strike
Yet this idiot gave it to a guy who has not bowled. Unbelievable, how the hell can you bottle such a game. Hassan ali had won them.

I am soo gutted

Lahore always ensures thrilling games. To be honest from pure neutral spectators point of view Lahore always gives exciting games. Not great to be their fan though as they take you through heart attack like situations most of the time. Well done to Lahore. Well played Rashid Khan (MoM today).

Never thought shadab to be hiding behind it,, new batsman in the middle should have bowled himself..

Day by day shadab's value as a bowler, batsman and now as a captain is going down the hill..

It was right move not to bowl a spinner in the last over as they can be taken to cleaners when batsmen are going for slogs.Talat just bowled poorly.

He actually captained well in the match to take the match to last over with smallish score.

IU didnt realise that it was actually a very good score! He was the one that was keeping LQ in the game with his trash bowling in the middle overs, otherwise the other bowlers went according to the script!

Talat isnt a white ball bowler! The kind of guy that will go for 6x6 against the likes of Andre Russell.

Shadab had to bowl to Rashid the flukey tailender and some Singapore international! Surely he has played enough cricket to back himself against these two batsmen??

Rashid Khan receives the Man of the Match award:

Moral of the story, don't bring Hussain talat to national teams, he was bowling lolipop deliveries asked to be hit.

James Faulkner after the win against IU:

It’s been unique firstly coming into the bubble and now we are finally playing. It’s been a long wait but it’s good to be on the ground and it’s great for the fans all around the world who follow the PSL. It’s good to get underway and there’s a lot of cricket still to be played.

The pitch had a little bit in it for the whole duration of the match and it was stopping with the slower balls and there was a little bit of seam and bounce every now and then. It was about summing up the conditions and I don’t think I bowled particularly well, I just got a couple of wickets here and there and that’s the nature of T20 cricket you can bowl well some games and get belted and some days bowl well and not take any wickets. All in all we are here to win and contribute to the team and so far it’s a good start.

We’ve got a pretty decent bowling combination and we’ve obviously got some great young Pakistani fast bowlers in our squad and so do other teams as well. It’s early doors in the tournament, there’s a hell of a lot of cricket still to be played, so it’s a good start.

I don’t really look at the table, it’s all about getting momentum and get as many wins in the box as you can. It’s a pretty easy philosophy.

His 3 overs were decent he looks better than in previous games better control today

To much criticism for shadab he actually bowled quite well and to take it to the last over was brilliant effort.

Shadab Khan after today's loss to LQ:

There were quite a few positives from the match. We had a low total but we put up a good effort. I’m really pleased with the effort of the bowlers and the fielders supported them and we can take these as positives for the next match.

We should have batted according to the pitch but unfortunately we didn’t. We will learn from our mistakes and try to change our batting strategy. We will try to play cricketing shots and grab every opportunity.

We’ve put up a good effort out there and I feel we have a good combination and we are in good shape. The dew factor will play a big part like it did today The pitch changed after 7 or 8 overs of the second innings and spinners weren’t as effective in the second innings. We have to learn from this and I feel the toss will play a big part in these matches here too.

A comeback after injury is always tough and there was pressure on me because I was playing after 2 to 3 months. I’m confident and happy with my fitness and hopefully the upcoming performances will be good too.

Mohammad Wasim is a very impressive bowler and he performs even under pressure and in the death overs. It’s a great sign for us and for Pakistan cricket that an emerging guy is performing like this.

Despite the loss we had a lot of positives and we will take that to the next match. The negatives we will ensure they don’t happen again.

Brilliant stuff from the captain Sohail Akhtar today. Still looks dodgy against spin.

The sixth edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League resumed with a thrilling contest as Lahore Qalandars – the finalists of the 2020 tournament – sealed a five-wicket win over 2016 and 2018 champions Islamabad United on the final ball. This was Qalandars’ just third win over United in 11 matches and took them to the top of the points table.

Qalandars chased down a tricky 144 at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi thanks to Rashid Khan who smashed Hussain Talat for three fours in the last over. Qalandars required 16 from six when Shadab Khan, the United captain, brought Hussain into the attack to deliver his only over of the match.

Rashid, who had earlier bowled a staggering number of 15 dots in his four overs to return one for nine, welcomed the right-arm pacer with three consecutive fours and stole two runs on the fourth delivery. The last two balls brought two singles as Qalandars registered their fourth win of the season – the most for any side. United, meanwhile, slipped a spot to the fourth.

United looked in contention after Hasan Ali, who took two wickets for 27 runs at a decent economy of 6.75, gave away only seven runs and dismissed Ben Dunk in the penultimate over. Hasan bowled a clean over darting four dots before Tim David finished it with a six that went over the bowler’s head.

Qalandars’ innings was anchored by their captain Sohail Akhtar who top-scored in the match with a 30-ball 40 and smashed five fours and a six.

Sohail’s knock included a 38-run partnership for the third wicket with Mohammad Hafeez (29 off 25, three fours) that steadied Qalandars’ innings after losing their first two wickets for 44 runs in 7.4 overs. The highlight of their partnership was the 12th over in which the pair smashed Shadab for three fours.

The next over, Fawad Ahmed helped United pounce back in the contest as he trapped Sohail LBW and that dismissal paved the way for Hafeez’s return to the pavilion in the 15th over when he pulled Hasan’s slower delivery into Asif Ali’s hands at deep square-leg.

David, however, maintained his calm in the crucial moments and scored a handy 23 not out off 15.

Sohail maintained the trend of fielding first after winning the toss and Qalandars were provided an excellent start by Australian pacer James Faulkner as he accounted for a batsman each in his first three overs in the powerplay that left Islamabad United reeling at 43 for three.

Qalandars could have had the first wicket in the opening over when Usman Khawaja chipped Shaheen Shah Afridi’s length delivery to mid-off but it was put down by Haris Rauf. That missed opportunity, however, did not bother Qalandars as Faulkner bowled Colin Munro in the next over after being smashed for a four and a six.

In his next over – the fourth of the innings – he had Rohail Nazir caught in covers and made the United captain miscue a slower delivery to be held by his counterpart at mid-off in the last powerplay over.

The left-arm pacer finished with three wickets for 32 from four overs.

Faulkner was also involved in the fourth dismissal as he caught Usman safely at deep third-man when the Australian top-order batsman cut Rauf in the seventh over.

A 22-run partnership between Iftikhar Ahmed and Talat ensued. It was broken by young pacer Ahmed Daniyal, who took two wickets in the match, in the 12th over as United lost half of their batting lineup for 72 runs.

The pressure continued to mount on the batting side thanks Rashid’s mysterious leg-spin. The Afghanistan leg-spinner accounted for Talat in the next over after Iftikhar’s wicket.

As United fans pinned their hopes on hard-hitting batsman Asif Ali to come to their rescue, a fantastic take by Mohammad Hafeez at short mid-wicket brought an end to his innings.

Faheem Ashraf, however, rose to the occasion and provided the desired boost in the death overs during his 24-ball 27 that set 143 for nine.

After entering the death phase of the innings – the last five overs – with 99 runs and three wickets intact, United managed 44 at the loss of two wickets.

Hasan Ali, who continues to entertain the fans with his batting exploits since his scintillating century in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2020-21 final which helped his team Central Punjab secure a tie against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, struck two boundaries, before Mohammad Wasim Jnr smashed a four and played a bold ramp shot against Rauf in the penultimate over for a six.

Rauf was the other bowler to finish taking two wickets in the innings.

Scores in brief:

Lahore Qalandars beat Islamabad United by five wickets

Islamabad United 143-9, 20 overs (Faheem Ashraf 27; James Faulkner 3-32, Haris Rauf 2-28, Ahmed Daniyal 2-29)

Lahore Qalandars 144-5, 20 overs (Sohail Akhtar 40, Mohammad Hafeez 29, Tim David 23 not out; Hasan Ali 2-27)

Player of the match – Rashid Khan (Lahore Qalandars)
