Latest ICC Test rankings : Roshen Silva breaks into the top 50 batsmen [Update Post #7]

Batsmen from either side have reaped the benefits of a high-scoring draw in the first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Chittagong by making impressive gains in the latest MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen, which were released on Monday morning.

Five centuries and six half-centuries were scored in a match which saw Bangladesh posting 513 and 307 for five, and Sri Lanka amassing a colossal 713 for nine declared in their only innings.

Sri Lanka opener Kusal Mendis, who was the top scorer in the match with 196, has vaulted 12 places to claim 23rd position, while Dhananjaya de Silva, who contributed 173 and featured in a 308-run second wicket stand with Mendis, has lifted eight places to occupy 38th spot.

Roshen Silva’s 109 has moved him from 106th position to a career-high 78th spot.

Mominul Haq, who became the first Bangladesh batsman to score two centuries in a Test while hitting 176 and 105, has risen 15 places to 27th position. In doing so, he has become Bangladesh’s fourth highest-ranked batsman after Tamim Iqbal (21st), Shakib Al Hasan (22nd) and Mushfiqur Rahim (25th). The four Bangladesh batsmen are separated by just 24 points.

Liton Das is the other batsman to head in the right direction. The wicketkeeper-batsman’s 94 in the second innings not only helped the home side to escape with a draw but also earned him nine places and 81st place in the batting table.

The Chittagong Test was a tough one for the bowlers and this is reflected in the latest bowlers’ rankings.

Rangana Herath has slipped one place to seventh position after bagging five wickets in 65 overs, Dilruwan Perera has dropped two places to take 27th,place, Mustafizur Rahman has slipped two places to 59th position and Lahiru Kumara has plummeted seven places to 76th slot

The bowlers to move up the ladder include Bangladesh’s spin duo of Taijul Islam and Mehedi Hasan, who have gained one place each to move to 36th and 38th rankings, respectively, and Sri Lanka’s Lakshan Sandakan, who has earned three places to rise to 57th position.

Australia’s Steve Smith is the number-one ranked batsman, while James Anderson of England is the top-ranked bowler. Shakib Al Hasan leads the all-rounders’ list.

After scoring 56 and 70 not out in the second Test against Bangladesh, the 29-year-old has been rewarded with a jump of 29 places.
Roshen Silva has continued to rise in the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen following a player of the match performance against Bangladesh in the Mirpur Test, which Sri Lanka won by 215 runs to take the series 1-0 on Saturday.

Silva scored 56 and 70 not out on a pitch on which 40 wickets fell for 681 runs inside three days. For this performance, the 29-year-old has been rewarded with a jump of 29 places, which has put him inside the top-50 batsmen in 49th spot for first time in his career.

Silva had scored 109 in the first Test, which had lifted him from 106th position to 78th rankings. The rise in the latest batsmen’s rankings has made Silva the seventh highest-ranked Sri Lanka batsman after Dinesh Chandimal 12th (down by three places), Kusal Mendis 21st (up by two places), Angelo Mathews (24th), Dimuth Karunaratne 32nd (down by four places), Dhananjaya de Silva (38th) and Niroshan Dickwella 45th (down by four places).

Bangladesh’s batting failure in the Mirpur Test is also reflected in the latest rankings.

Shakib, who missed the Test due to an injury, has stayed in 22nd spot but Tamim Iqbal has fallen five places to 26th, Mushfiqur Rahim has dropped three places to 28th, Mominul Haque has slipped three places to 30th, Mahmudullah has plummeted six places to 54th and Sabbir Rahman has tumbled 17 places to 104th.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers, Akila Dananjaya has made an impressive entry following his three for 20 and five for 24. The off-spinner has entered in 58th position, while fast bowler Suranga Lakmal, who took three for 25 in the first innings, has moved up three places to 30th position.

Rangana Herath, who became the first left-arm spinner to take 400 Test wickets during the match, has remained his country’s highest-ranked bowler despite slipping one place to eight following his four wickets in Mirpur.

Bangladesh have something to smile about as left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and seamer Mustafizur Rahman have headed in the right direction, while returning veteran Abdur Razzak has reappeared in 95th spot after his five wickets in the match.

Taijul, who took four for 83 and four for 76, has moved up two places to a career-high 34th position, while Mustafizur has jumped 10 places to 49th following match figures of five for 66.

The batting table is headed by Steve Smith of Australia, with Virat Kohli of India in second and Joe Root of England in third positions, respectively. James Anderson of England is the highest-ranked bowler, and is followed by Kagiso Rabada of South Africa and Ravindra Jadeja of India.
