The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday conducted a raid at the Lahore residence of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif.

As per reports, a six-member NAB team raided Shehbaz’s house in Model Town, where his son and opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly, Hamza Shehbaz, was present.

Television reports suggested the anti-graft body was aiming to arrest Hamza, who is facing three NAB inquiries related to the Punjab Saaf Pani Company, Ramzan Sugar Mills and owning assets beyond means.
A PML-N official pointed out that any such development would be in contravention of a Lahore High Court interim order issued in November last year, wherein the court said that NAB must inform Hamza 10 days before any move to arrest him.

However, the LHC order would be overruled by the Supreme Court’s written order issued on March 27 in which it authorised NAB to arrest anyone without prior intimation if it had irrefutable evidence against the suspect.

A spokesman for Hamza Shehbaz later confirmed that the NAB team departed the residence after almost an hour.

There were also reports of scuffles between NAB officials and the PML-N leaders who gathered outside the house.

Addressing the media after NAB’s raid, Hamza Shehbaz claimed that he has always appeared before the accountability watchdog and never ignored the bureau’s summons.

“Asad Munir committed suicide due to their discriminatory attitude and the CII said that they humiliate people by arresting them,” said the provincial assembly’s opposition leader.

He also alleged that the PTI government was responsible for massive corruption in K-P. Criticising the incumbent government, Shehbaz added the current economic situation was suspicious.

Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader Marriyum Aurangzeb vehemently condemned the NAB raid, saying that the anti-graft body came without a warrant and did not complete other formalities.

She alleged that the raid was conducted on the directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan. “The prime minister is under mental stress and has come down to such high-handed tactics. What justification does NAB have for this operation? Why have they conducted this raid without a warrant and in broad daylight?”

The former state information minister reiterated that despite repeated attempts no charges of corruption were ever proven against the Sharif family.

‘Authoritarian and undemocratic’

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari condemned NAB’s raid on Shehbaz’s house. He stated his party doesn’t “oppose accountability but oppose political vendettas”. He termed NAB’s raid as an “authoritarian and undemocratic” move.

NAB are awful- they deliberately mess up cases to let these crooks go and then do these dramas. We need a young energetic chairman to sort this rubbish out.

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Malik Ahmad Khan on Saturday said National Accountability Bureau (NAB) teams have once again reached Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif's residence.

Police officials have surrounded Shehbaz's 96-H Model Town residence and cordoned it off.

A day earlier, NAB conducted a raid at Shehbaz's residence. A press release by NAB said a team had gone to the residence to arrest Hamza Shehbaz on the basis of evidence against him in the assets beyond means and alleged money laundering case. The press release added that NAB officials were manhandled by Hamza’s guards, their clothes were torn and death threats were given.

"NAB officials had gone to the residence with an arrest warrant and the Supreme Court had stated that the accountability bureau did not require to inform any accused prior to arresting them," read the press release. The press release added that Hamza had violated the law and the bureau on the basis of evidence against and in light of Supreme Court directives would arrest him.

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Saturday once again reached Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif's residence and cordoned it off in an attempt to arrest Hamza Shehbaz.

Contingents of police, Rangers and anti-riot force have surrounded Shehbaz's 96-H Model Town residence, 24 hours after NAB first raided the PML-N president's family residence to arrest Hamza. Police has been stationed outside the main gate of the house and contingents of female police officers are also present.

A large number of PML-N workers also reached the residence and clashed with police as they attempted to reach the gate of the house.

Additional Director NAB Chaudhry Asghar while speaking to PML-N lawyer Atta Tarrar outside the Shehbaz family residence said, "We are here to arrest Hamza and should be allowed to go inside the house."

"We have Hamza's arrest warrant," the NAB additional director said.

Later speaking to the media, the NAB additional director said, "We are not being allowed inside the residence to arrest Hamza and no one is cooperating with us."

"Hamza is a renowned politician and should behave like one. Hamza should not hide behind workers," he asserted. "The whole Pakistan is watching that a renowned politician is hiding from arrest."

The NAB additional director said, "I do not have any weapon on me and I am not a terrorist. I am here to arrest Hamza as per the law. There are multiple cases against Hamza — he was involved in money laundering and the country is not moving forward but we all can see who is moving ahead."

Further speaking to Geo News, PML-N leader Malik Ahmed Khan said, "NAB is ignoring LHC orders and misinterpreting Supreme Court's directives."

"The government has made a NAB state and these raids are being carried out on Imran Khan's orders," he added. "NAB officers are issuing political statements and it seems that they prepared what to say after sitting down with Shahbaz Gill."

The PML-N leader further said that they have appealed to party workers to remain peaceful.

Hamza's secretary, however, said, "We will not let Hamza get arrested at any cost."

"We have directed party workers to reach the residence and are ready for all circumstances. Hamza is not a terrorist that he be arrested like this. We will fight democratically," he added.

Regarding the raid, Punjab chief minister's spokesperson Shahbaz Gill while speaking to Geo News said, "NAB is independent and not bound to inform us regarding inquiries."

"The accountability bureau has also arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders," Gill added. Criticising the PML-N's reaction to the raid a day earlier, the Punjab CM's spokesperson said, "PML-N's reaction has always been shameful and they manhandled the NAB team yesterday.

A day earlier, NAB conducted a raid at Shehbaz's residence to arrest Hamza. A press release by NAB said a team had gone to the residence to arrest Hamza on the basis of evidence against him in the assets beyond means and alleged money laundering case.

Earlier today, a first information report (FIR) was registered against Hamza's guards on an application filed by NAB. The FIR registered in Lahore's Model Town Police Station states that Hamza's guards manhandled and threatened NAB team members who raided Shehbaz's residence.

Lahore High Court restrains NAB from arresting Hamza Shehbaz till Monday, April 8

A team from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Saturday returned to the Shehbaz family's 96-H Model Town residence in Lahore to arrest Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Hamza Shehbaz.

After a nearly five-hour standoff outside the house, media reported that the Lahore High Court's chief justice had barred NAB from arresting Hamza till Monday, April 8, after being petitioned by the PML-N's legal team.

The arresting party started returning around 4pm after the short order was issued.

Advocate Amjad Pervez had appeared before the high court on Hamza’s behalf. He argued that Hamza has filed a request for interim bail and if he is taken under custody, he will lose his constitutional right to appear before the court in order to secure bail.

LHC Chief Justice Sardar Shamim Ahmed summoned the record of the appeal filed for interim bail and barred NAB from arresting Hamza meanwhile.

After the NAB team left Model Town, Hamza appeared before emotional supporters and said that the LHC had said that Hamza has been cooperating with the anti-graft watchdog and there was no need for arresting him.

He thanked his supporters for standing before NAB's team like an "impenetrable wall" as if they were protecting their own house and said: "These are not PML-N workers, they are my family."

The PML-N lawmaker then pointed his guns towards the government and said that the prime minister should "stop lying and acting out of jealousy and bias".

"Pakistan's economy is drowning, we don't have money for debt servicing. I ask them [government] to draw a road map to fix the economy and provide relief to the poor. People are tired of hearing [about] 'thieves'," Hamza said.

The development came just a day after NAB conducted a failed 'raid' at the same address to arrest Hamza on charges of money laundering and possessing assets beyond means.

NAB officials had earlier said that they would not enter the house and that the PML-N leader should turn himself in. However, the accountability watchdog had also petitioned an accountability court seeking permission to enter the house to arrest Hamza.

"We mean to arrest Hamza Shehbaz by all means today," the NAB deputy director leading the team had told the media.

After the accountability court issued its decision on the matter, PML-N counsel Atta Tarar, while commenting on the order, stated that the court had "dismissed" NAB's petition and refused to give NAB and police permission to raid the house to arrest Hamza. He said the arresting party should, therefore, turn back.

However, while the accountability court had, in fact, dismissed the petition, it had made clear that it was only doing so because NAB already had all authority it needed to execute its arrest warrant in line with Chapter V of the Code of Criminal Procedures.

The court said that "no specific direction is required to be issued to execute the duly issued warrant of arrest if same is not suspended by the competent authority".

Maryam Aurangzeb declares soon Lahore High Court is going to issue orders for NAB to go back and not arrest Hamza. And low and behold the LHC orders the pre arrest bail, is justice Qayyum still in office or is the whole court Justice Qayyum types?

All Pakistani institutions are sold out, people sell their souls for bribes. Sad reality. The rich and powerful will always elude justice if you allow them to use the system.

Maryam Auregzeb let the cat out of the bag by telling everyone that bail will be granted 2 hours before it was, how did she now? the LHC is for Corrupt to the core and the mafia will be without a protector. Hamza will have to hide permanently in the toilet, the case must be good if the Nooras have to use all the Rona dona to avoid getting arrested.

LAHORE: Opposition Leader in Punjab Hamza Shehbaz on Saturday asked Prime Minister Imran Khan not to scare him of jails as he had faced them and been through 10-year accountability process by Musharraf regime.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader said so while addressing party workers outside his residence, after the Lahore High Court (LHC) barred National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from arresting Hamza.

"The nation is awakening. The workers are standing firm here," he said. "Our workers are our asset and I respect them from the core of my heart."

Hamza said the constitution and the law won today in the country.

He noted that his party's leadership faced cases against them and appeared before investigating agencies despite all reservations.

"Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan to face cases against him, leaving behind his ailing wife. But not a single penny worth of corruption could be proven against the former prime minister," the opposition leader said.

"We appeared before the NAB despite all reservations and the anti-graft body stated before the court that Hamza Shehbaz was most cooperative of all."

LHC bars NAB from arresting Hamza Shehbaz till Monday

He said he had the court order with him, adding, "Court orders should be respected for the sake of rule of law in the country. You cannot arrest me".

Hamza said tyrant are those who enter a person's residence by scaling the walls and detain the occupants.

He said he was scared due to the present economic conditions of the country.

"The economic conditions of the country are haunting me today. Niazi sahib, you have deprived the masses of food, while the tests being conducted in public hospitals are costlier than tests in private hospitals," the opposition leader said.

He invited the incumbent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government to hold talks with them on Charter of Democracy, saying that opposition would play its role for the sake of people.

"There are ages left for political rivalry. The price of dollar today has been putting a question mark on Pakistan's economy," Hamza said. "The economy of the country is declining and there is shortage of capital even for debt servicing.

He invited the government to come and try jointly carving out a roadmap to help strengthen the economy.

The opposition leader advised the prime minister to stop telling lies, saying that the masses did not have enough money for treatment of their children.

He said they would resolve public issues the way they eliminated load-shedding from the country.

"The people have sent us to assemblies. We took oath despite worst rigging, for the sake of continuity of democracy," Hamza said.

"Niazi sahib, I have faced 10-year accountability by Pervez Musharraf government," he said further.

"I served time in Adiyala jail when I was 18-year-old. Do not try and scare me."

Proud of CJ Saddar Shamim and the LHC judiciary. They took a patriotic decision.

They will inevitably pay a heavy price for it in this fascist regime, but they have showed that their is still hope.

This political witch-hunting must be opposed, which can only happen if the judiciary shows courage.

Only in Pakistan will this be considered a qualification:

"I served time in Adiyala jail when I was 18-year-old. Do not try and scare me."

And what to say of those who support such criminals

They opened on a Saturday to grant bail to crooks , do they do this for everybody? How did Maryam pumpkin face know they were going to do it 2 hours before it was granted? I think that anyone that thought that they were neutral has been humiliated, and what's more the case is so strong ( you know it is because if it wasn't, he wouldn't have been hiding in the toilet) even NAB can't save him from 14 years or more.

I think the revulsion on social media from people shows that LHC belongs to a different era. LHC IA will be disbanded

I think the LHC decision should be challenged be in the SC today. Hamza looks to be bricking it after the evidence shown.

NAB under fire after raids on Hamza’s house

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau’s two successive raids to arrest Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shahbaz from his residence have generated an interesting debate as the government terms the aborted efforts NAB’s failure, while the opposition accuses the anti-graft body of violating the rule of law.

The NAB raids have not only prompted the opposition Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party to lambast both the anti-graft watchdog and the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), the government also came out chiding NAB for not employing serious effort to arrest the “accused” for laundering about Rs85 billion abroad through fake accounts.

Prime minister’s spokesman Nadeem Afzal Chan termed NAB raids failed operation and said the bureau had given “political mileage” to Hamza Shahbaz. The opposition leader, however, lost a chance to gain politically and become a role model by courting arrest. Mr Chan also said the Sharif family’s five members were already absconding, while PTI leader and provincial minister Aleem Khan was in jail and others were facing NAB references.

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Monday restrained the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from arresting Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Malik Shehzad Ahmed Khan heard the PML-N leader's bail petition. Restraining the accountability watchdog from arresting Hamza until further notice, the court sought a detailred reply from NAB.

Further, the court directed Hamza to submit bail bonds worth Rs10 million.

NAB had carried out two successive raids on Friday and Saturday at PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif's Model Town residence to arrest Hamza.

During today's hearing, Hamza's lawyer told the court, "In an earlier order, the high court had directed that Hamza be informed 10 days prior to his arrest. The LHC had granted bail to my client in the Ramzan Sugar Mills case."

"Hamza is the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly and the 10-day order had been issued so the relevant forum can be approached for bail. Hamza is seeking pre-arrest bail so he can appear before NAB," the PML-N leader's counsel further said.

Justice Malik Shehzad then asked the NAB prosecutor regarding the cases in which they are seeking to arrest Hamza. At this, the PML-N leader's counsel said his arrest warrants have been issued in a case pertaining to assets beyond known sources of income.

The NAB prosecutor said, "Three cases against Hamza are being probed in NAB Lahore."

Hamza's lawyer then said, "NAB should share evidence against us and we will respond. Hamza had also approached LHC before this on November 1 and is innocent."

However, the NAB prosecutor stated, "We have solid evidence against Hamza. On April 3, an inquiry against Hamza was upgraded to an investigation. Hamza's earlier bail petition had been declared ineffective and the Supreme Court has issued a ruling on this matter."

At this, the bench said, "Both the matters are separate."

After hearing arguments of both sides, the court restrained NAB from arresting Hamza until further notice and sought a reply from the accountability bureau.

The hearing of the case has been adjourned till April 17.

On Saturday, the LHC issued a short order granting interim bail to Hamza until April 8. The high court's written order stated that an interim protective bail has been granted to Hamza "in order to enable the petitioner to approach" the concerned bench for the hearing of a bail plea that was filed on April 4. Advocate Amjad Pervez had appeared before the LHC on Hamza’s behalf and argued that Hamza had filed a request for interim bail.

LAHORE: An accountability court in Lahore indicted PML-N leaders Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz in the Ramzan Sugar Mills corruption reference on Monday.

The father and son – opposition leaders in the National Assembly and Punjab Assembly respectively – pleaded not guilty to the charges. They have been accused of misusing government funds and abuse of power.

The counsel for Sharifs, Amjad Pervez, argued on behalf of his clients while National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor Waris Ali Janjua represented the anti-graft watchdog in a hearing presided by Judge Syed Najamul Hassan.

NAB arrests Ramzan Sugar Mills top official

Janjua said NAB maintained that government funds were used to build a nullah catering to the needs of the sugar mill owned by the Sharifs.

At this statement, Shehbaz attempted

to speak but was prevented by the court. “You will be given an opportunity to speak. We need to follow protocol,” said the judge.

The former Punjab chief minister said he had saved billions during his tenure. “Why would I misappropriate government funds?”

“For now these are only accusations. No charges have been proved yet,” said the judge.

The court indicted Shehbaz and Hamza in the case and summoned witnesses to record statements in the next hearing.

LHC grants Hamza pre-arrest bail in Ramzan Sugar Mills, Saaf Paani Company cases

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday granted Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Hamza Shahbaz pre-arrest bail till April 17 in the Ramzan Sugar Mills and Saaf Pani Company cases.

The high court also ordered him to pay surety bonds worth Rs10 million each and issued a notice to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) seeking its reply in the matter.

A two-member bench of the high court headed by Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan heard two separate applications that the PML-N leader had submitted for pre-arrest bail earlier today.

According to the bail petitions, Hamza was fearful of arrest by NAB in the two cases. It stated that previously NAB had "called politicians in one case and arrested them in another case". The PML-N leader was fearful that the same would happen to him.

During the hearing, Hamza's lawyer revealed that in a notice issued last night, the provincial opposition leader was summoned by NAB in a money laundering and assets beyond means case today.

The lawyer recalled that the LHC had granted Hamza bail in one of the cases against him. He said the PML-N leader had been indicted in the Ramzan Sugar Mills case and therefore they were fearful that NAB would arrest him.

On Monday, the LHC had approved pre-arrest bail for Hamza till April 17 and restrained NAB from arresting him until then in a case of alleged assets beyond means.

A day later, an accountability court indicted Hamza and his father, National Assembly Opposition Leader Shahbaz Sharif, in the Ramzan Sugar Mills case. Both father and son pleaded not guilty to the charges framed against them, which involve the misuse of their authority and the illegal use of public funds.

Hamza was present in the LHC for today's hearing. The court expressed displeasure at the disorderliness of PML-N party workers.

Justice Khan observed that the workers had behaved in a similar manner on Tuesday and even today they were making noise.

"This is not the right approach," he said, adding that the bench was not happy with the disorder.

The judge remarked that everyone had come to the court "to get into the good graces" of the PML-N leadership and that videos and selfies were being taken in the court.

Hamza agreed with the judge but said that he had left his house without announcing the move. He said a mechanism would be decided on to ensure that such a situation did not occur in the court again.

Lohar High Court- What a bunch of criminals.

Legal system has loopholes which the rich and powerful exploit. The prosecution authorities in Pakistan need to get a lot more competent. Far too many crooks, criminals get exonerated in court whereas if they were being tried in the West, they Western authorities would have found a way to find evidence, build a convincing legal case and get convictions.

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Saturday raided home of former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif's home at the Model Town area of the city, sources informed Geo News.

The police have surrounded the area and have not allowed anyone to access the area.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz spokesperson Maryam Aurangzeb in her reaction to the development questioned the constitutional validity of the action.

"What kind of accountability is this? How can one raid at someone's residential place without giving notice," she asked.

Meanwhile, the NAB has already summoned Shehbaz's wife and two daughters.Shehbaz's wife has been summoned on April 17 while his daughter Rabia Sharif has been summoned on April 18 and Javeria Sharif has been summoned on April 19, sources in the accountability watchdog said.

The wife and daughters of Shehbaz have been summoned for questioning regarding business transactions, the NAB sources further said.

The PML-N president's son, Hamza Shehbaz, has also been summoned on April 15 in a case pertaining to construction of a nullah from government money. Hamza has been summoned on April 16 as well in a case pertaining to assets beyond known sources of income, sources added.

The Lahore High Court on Monday restrained NAB from arresting Hamza. NAB had carried out two successive raids last week at Shehbaz's Model Town residence to arrest Hamza.

Hamza Shahbaz's bail extended till April 25

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday extended pre-arrest bail for Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Hamza Shahbaz till April 25 and restrained the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from arresting him.

A NAB team seeking Hamza's arrest was embroiled in a nearly five-hour-long standoff with his private security and supporters at his family's Model Town residence on April 6. It was the second day in a row that the NAB had approached his residence for his arrest. The stalemate ended once the LHC restrained the bureau from arresting the MPA and granted him protective bail until April 8, before extending it to April 17.

In today's hearing, the NAB lawyer told the court that the bureau's replies in the Saaf Pani case, the Ramazan Sugar Mills case and the money laundering case had been submitted.

The defendant's lawyer argued that he had not been provided proper copies of the reply. "The copies we got are not readable. Had we had proper copies we would have submitted our response to the replies today," the lawyer said.

The bench, after calling Hamza to the rostrum, extended his bail till April 25.
