What's new

Liverpool FC | 2017-18 Season

Liverpool have been worked out. I worked out how to play Klopss press so it wasn't long till experienced managers did.

This overrated joker does not know how to organise a defence and made a season-defining mistake not fixing the defence in the summer. Time and time again there is so much space for Spurs to exploit. How we are not 3 down already ?

Hansen and Lawrenson, Carragher and Hyypia to Lovren and Matip. Jesus Christ, no wonder we're shipping goals left and right.

There is no protection at the back when going forward. Liverpool will have chances but you cant win when you leak so many easy goals.

Don't let Klopp off the hook by blaming individual mistakes or FSG - he CHOSE to go into this season with these defenders and goalkeepers.

He signed off on Lovren's new contract.

This is the highest amount of goals Liverpool have conceded after nine top-flight games since the 1964-65 campaign according to Opta.

Klopp needs to go imo the club has regressed big time alongside with getting an image of becoming a selling club and people questioning whether we are big club in terms of ability to attract players

He isnt the right type of manager for Liverpool together with the tactics he uses.

Also as Liverpool fans we need to get ready for the sucker punch of our top players going i see coutinho and emre can leaving ;
And I wouldn't be surprised if someone comes knocking for saido mane and even salah

Very worrying
Liverpool fans have always grown up over the years witnessing a team with good defence and top defenders ,

Even under Roy Evans and Gerard houillier we had a strong defence.

Shambles again.

Where is this master tactician Klopp - was he lost in transit from Germany to Liverpool?

Where is this master tactician Klopp - was he lost in transit from Germany to Liverpool?

He never was a master tactican. He only has one plan which is to press. Once that is exposed by teams giving Liverpool the ball, he is clueless.

I think, Rafa still owns his mansion in Liverpool, where his daughters are schooling - but, I don't want him back under FSG. If we don't make the CL, hopefully Yanks will sell the club.

FSG is responsible for Lovrens mistakes and the way tactical genius Klopp set up yesterday?

Should have sold coutinho - and bought 2 cb and a left back - then next yr buy coutinho replacement

God please no, anyone but Rafa Benitez. His play style is unwatchable. Give Klopp time.

Under Benitez we were regularly finishing top four, challenged for the league title, regularly reached QFs and SFs of the European Cup and won the FA Cup.

Whereas under Klopp we bottled two cup finals and a title challenge last season where we scraped 4th.

I'd take the former's record over Klopp's "watchable play style" where we concede 3s and 4s every other week.

Three league wins in a row for the first time in the calendar year.

Next two games are Chelaea at home and Stoke away so let's see whether a corner has been turned or if we're just papering over the cracks.

Gutless team - cannot grind out a result if their life depended on it on a consistent basis.

There are no leaders or organisers who can manage a game. Henderson should be finished as captain and Klopp ought to reassess just why the hell Lovren and Moreno are deemed good enough for Liverpool Football Club.

We will not win a trophy with those two in our back four.

Oh, and Spanish police are thugs who seem to be stuck in the Franco era.

Been reading The Anfield Wrap's Twitter and some lads out there have been harrassed or hurt with many not being let in by police with no apparent reason leading to queues even at kickoff. Leicester, Friburg and Spurs fans to name a few have also complained about the police in Seville when travelling there for away games.

No wonder the Catalonians kicked off.

What lead is safe with this team ? Do we have to go 7-0 up before being sure of a win ?

There were some who believe we'd turned a corner defensively and pointrd to recent clean sheets at home - laughable, defence would always come unstuck under any pressure from a decent team.

Hope we can get into the Quarter Finals this year, important to keep improving our coefficient for more favourable draws in the future.

Our attacking ability has never been in doubt, its the defensive side that people question.

The best news from last night was Moreno getting injured..... him being absent improves the defence on its own.

I was heartbroken after our loss to Spurs. Since then we have been brilliant and should have additionally won a few more matches against West Brom and Everton as well. The team is developing well under Klopp and are so good to watch. If we can keep then add to our "fab four" can get even better. We must find a good replacement for Coutinho who is certain to leave in the summer at the latest. The average Can's and injury prone Sturridge and Ings impending departures do not bother me. The subs bench has never been so strong with Lallana and Ox on the bench. Could do with another forward when Sturridge leaves although Solanke looks promising, Origi may not return from his loan spell either. Despite VVD coming in Matip today proved the defence could need further upgrading. Having said all that with Man City almost 20 point ahead we are not any nearer to winning the title. A goalie, few defenders and a forward should be on Klopp's shopping list.

As I said in the VVD signing thread - this signing is the first step in fixing the back five but can't be the only step.

You have to accompany this with a GK signing and send the two incumbent clowns off to the circus.

So yanks make a massive windfall profit again

Vvd signing is just a cushion for the fall that is losing a star player like coutinho

Liverpool did really well today getting a crucial winner in extra time ending a good festive season, unbeaten. The Ox and returning Lallana both did well. Mane is out of form yet scored a brilliant opener only for the defence to again concede a cheap equaliser with three minutes to go. On to the crucial FA Cup Merseyside derby next possibly without the injured Salah I hear.

Barca/Nike seem to have made a crucial error when arrogantly showing of Couts as there player. This has infuriated LFC and Klopp who to punish them will demand an astronomical fee all upfront. There are also strong rumours that the manager may insist on a swap deal demanding Suarez in return. Great if that happens!. Liverpool's 2018 calendar has Couts shown on the January page that indicates he is going nowhere as least not during this window. I am excited too see if we make any further signings this month as well as VVD's debut possibly in the FA Cup match.

https://thefield.scroll.in/864070/l...coutinhos-deal-to-barcelona-finalised-reports

Barcelona and Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle for Philippe Coutinho to move to the Spanish giants for €120 million ($144 million) with add-ons worth another €40 million, a report said Saturday.

Barcelona-based Sport newspaper said Coutinho would join Barca this month on a deal for five seasons, although it said the details of the deal were still to be finalised.

“The club reached a deal in principle yesterday evening with Liverpool on the final amount of the deal,” Sport reported.

Another newspaper, Mundo Deportivo, said Liverpool were demanding €160 million for 25-year-old Coutinho, but that the sum would be made up of the transfer fee and other “variables”.

Coutinho’s departure would be a blow to Liverpool as he is just rounding into top form, scoring six goals in the last seven games of 2017.

Crucially though, acquiring the playmaker would allow Barcelona to move on from the bitter experience of losing his Brazil teammate Neymar last summer to Qatar-backed Paris Saint-Germain for a world record €222 million.

Coutinho’s age is also highly attractive to Barca, whose three main stars, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta are all in their thirties. Iniesta, at 33, has shown signs of fatigue this season.

Another report said Coutinho could arrive in Barcelona later Saturday and could be a spectator at Barcelona’s game against Levante at the Camp Nou on Sunday.

French sport daily L’Equipe reported on Saturday that Liverpool were lining up Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez to replace Coutinho, although other reports have indicated that the Merseyside club would prefer to sign Thomas Lemar from Monaco.

Coutinho played no role in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over city rivals Everton in the FA Cup on Friday. Liverpool’s winner was scored by Virgil Van Dijk, the Dutch defender signed last week from Southampton for £75 million ($101.7 million, €84.5 million).

I was expecting Couts to move on so it is no surprise, walk on. Great win against Everton in the Cup yesterday with the new boy getting the winner. I trust Klopp if he has decided to sell Coutinho. It has been a good holiday period for Liverpool having not lost any matches. The boys looked drained yesterday after having played so much recently but still got the job done. Okay, it was no penalty with Lallana falling down like a brick wall:shadab Then again, their lad did the same in the recent EPL match when they were given a pen. Karma and all that!

Many sources saying that Riyad Mahrez set to have a medical tomorrow! Oh no, i hope it is untrue as it is not the replacement I wanted for Couts. Mahrez plays in a different position. Nabil Fekir would have been much better. At least we are building our Muslim family at Anfield!:babar

Mahrez and Lemar linked with Liverpool.

If I was Klopp, I would try and sign Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez seems to have his heart set on joining Man City. We were in for him when he joined Arsenal at our expense. I have a feeling that JK may wait for the summer to find Couts replacement that would be a major blow. I don't want Mahrez neither do we seem seriously interested in him. Even though JK is great at developing he plays in the same position as Salah. Don't think Monaco will sell Lemar this month, not everyone is as stupid as Liverpool selling an important player mid season. JK may surprise us fans by bringing in someone like another Brazilian in Arthur of Gremio who is also linked. If Ings and or Sturridge leave this month we could need another forward as well, a new keeper is also rumoured. The door at Anfield will be a revolving one this month.

The owners made it clear that it was up to JK to decide on Couts sale or not. Had he been sold against JK's wishes the manager would have walked away as well. Couts was no longer committed to L'pool which is why he has been sold. I will be happy if we can bring in Lemar, a keeper and a forward this month. Some more will be leaving as well. We already have the Keita done with rumours that he may be joining up this month instead of waiting until the summer.

Liverpool are prepared to sell Daniel Sturridge this month - but they want £30million for the striker.

The 28-year-old frontman has informed the Reds that he wants to leave during the current window in order to secure the regular action required to force his way into England’s World Cup squad.

Jurgen Klopp remains keen for Sturridge to stay for the rest of the season but will grant him his wish if Liverpool receive an offer which they believe matches his value.

As it stands Sturridge isn’t available for loan with the Reds only considering a permanent move. That position could change later in the window if the asking price isn’t met and there’s a hefty loan fee on the table.

Southampton and West Ham have both been linked with the former Chelsea forward, who has found himself down the pecking order at Anfield this season.

Sturridge, who returned to full training at Melwood this week after a hamstring injury, hasn’t featured since the victory over Spartak Moscow on December 6.

He has only made five starts in all competitions this term with Klopp favouring Roberto Firmino in the central attacking role.

Coutinho will spend his season playing Alaves and Leganes when he could have helped Liverpool chase Champions League glory
Sturridge has scored 63 goals in 133 appearances for the club since his £12million move from Chelsea five years ago. He netted 24 times in the 2013/14 season when he struck up a deadly double act with Luis Suarez but since then he’s been hampered by a succession of injury setbacks.

He has struggled to hold down a place under Klopp and believes the time is right to pursue a new challenge. Sturridge was overlooked by Gareth Southgate for the November internationals against Germany and Brazil, and fears that if he stays at Liverpool he will miss out on June’s World Cup in Russia.

As well as Firmino, Sturridge finds himself battling with Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke for game time. Liverpool believe the £30million price tag is fair in the current market for a striker of Sturridge’s calibre.

Liverpool taking down City. Brilliant. As a United fan, I will admit that Liverpool have been the best team to watch this season. Can Oxlade-Chamberlain fill Coutinho's boots?

If Liverpool can get a world-class goalkeeper and strengthen the defence further they will be title contenders next season for sure.

Klopp is a mad genius.

Salah gets the fourth. Liverpool making a mockery of 'invincible' Man City.

Brilliant game.Great finish by Oxlade-Chamberlain,then Firmino scored after the halftime break, then an absolute belter by Mane.Salah capitalised well on GK’s mistake to make it 4.

They have been all over City..

Where's your Arab petrodollars now ?

They'll win the title but nice to be the ones breaking the streak and avenging the 5-0.

I have always felt that the Ox is a top talent. He was being wasted at Arsenal and his development had stagnated under Wenger. He stands vindicated in his decision to leave for Liverpool. He has been phenomenal today and hope he continues to build on this performance.

Awesome performance taking City apart. City have been very arrogant today showing a lack f respect to us. Even when he was at Arsenal I had a lot of time for the Ox, Wenger just didn't know how to get the best out of him. Other teams have been showing to much respect to City this season by not having a go at them. They can be hurt, they can be gotten at by being pressed like Liverpool have shown. 4-2 as I speak now. Still feel we need to sign a replacement for Coutinho before the window closes.

Obviously no match of Liverpool's is complete without some defensive shambles.

What a game! Promised to be a thriller and boy did it live up to the billing. Liverpool need to tighten up in the final minutes of the game.

I have had my nails for dinner!:amir3 I am gonna say that our defence gave in due to Dijk's absence! Two games in and he is already injured:facepalm: Some great goals scored today by the boys, credit to City for never giving up. That is what the champs should be made off, never say die:14:

We did it - without PC, without VVD .... & without a GK

Can't believe we are that far behind City in the league table. We've not lost since Spurs hammered us, just goes to show how awesome City have been. Now cap a great day by announcing the spectacular signing of a Lemar or Sanchez:klopp

Need a GK first - if we can score 4 against Pep's quarter billion $ back line, don't think winger or forward should be first priority.

We still need to replace an attacker like Couts as well. The bench looked rather weak today. Need to find a partner for Dijk more then a goalie. Mignolet is terrible but Karius is not that bad.

L'pool should consider bringing in Theo Walcott from Arsenal. I feel JK can reignite his career at Anfield like he did of Ox. He is a Liverpool boyhood fan who would welcome a move as well. Admittedly, goalie, holding midfielder and central defender remains the priorities.

No thank you. He is older than Ox no more a youngster who can re-ignite his career. Plus we are well sorted on the wing.

Great game yesterday. Saw the table after the game and realised we have only lost 2 games so far this season. It is the draws that have really let us down. No doubt we would have won games if we had a better defense and goalie which remains to be the problem. Within the current top 5 we have conceded 28 times in comparison to other teams like United, City and Chelsea have only conceded 16-17 which is the problem. Liverpool have taken a big step forward to resolve that problem with VVD signing. The last pieces of the puzzle now seem to be the goal keeper and right back. Until Clyne gets back not entirely sure about TAA or Joe Gomez. Andy Robertson on the other hand has been a great signing at 8 million. The way he pressed yesterday he was an absolute engine.

The other piece of the puzzle is to fill the void left by Coutinho, perhaps Lemar or Lanzini. Lanzini played really well against Huddersfield the other day. He would be a very good like for like replacement.

Slipped up against Swansea

Can't afford to lose games like these

We definently need another quality central defender

A goalkeeper is definently needed

We should buy malcolm and Lemar yes they will cost a lot

And also go for a big money signing in midfield like Vidal from Bayern Munich and try to get dani ceballos from Real Madrid

Also witn trouble at watford a cheeky bid for richarlson won't hurt

We have already signed a fullback Anderson arroyo but he will need a few years to get a permit but looks a good talent

Didn't take long for the "can't do any good business in January" excuses to be rolled out.

So we flog one of our best players and it doesn't look like anyone's coming in until the summer. Did it occur to the club hierarchy that the reason we are 4th in the table right now is because of the "Fab Four" providing attacking depth ?

We strengthened the defence with VVD but have weakened the attack. Its a joke that Danny Ings is playing in 2018.

To be honest I'm getting bewildered by fsg

I mean they don't even have to break the bank and sign the players mentioned above and get involved in some bidding war .

Simple shrewd signings like

A top in form forward for gremio who has been in top form in the South American version of champions league called LUAN he only has a release clause of 18 million he can play just behind the strikers like coutinho and as a proper striker.

Also there is a young midfielder in same team a combative midfielder called Arthur melo who was bought into the squad by big Phil scolari a really good talent .

Getting rid of dead wood like Ings , Ojo and out of favour Sturridge will raise the funds to get a proper striker like aubemeyang , a simple shrewd swamp deal of Sturridge going one way and aubemeyang coming the other way could work , he is a proven goal scorer in Bundesliga.

If they don't play for Southampton, they don't exist as per our "scouts".

Liverpool sign young Scottish left back.

Gallacher from Falkirk for 200000 quid

Nice to see coutinho money is being spent so well

What's the point signing these young players if klopp does not blood them through and give them games .
Case in point being solanke bought from chelsea and not played at all

Another one being ejaria and woodburn

We've been waiting 20 years for a title

I fully back the team and always will

I'm still out when it comes to klopp but he should be given a chance to build his team and then we can see the end result .

But I will be honest the way the fsg is running this club we won't be competing for titles or champions league trophy or getting big signings to compete with the best even van dijk and Keita are rip offs they are not worth 70 million but half that .

It will be massive achievement year on year if we get in top 4 in the league for champions league spot but that will suit the owners as long as they get the champions league money tv rights .

We are no longer liverpool a big club yes I say that reason we won't win titles or European cups anytime soon I wish I'm proven wrong but I don't see it ATM .

Atm things are getting worse we are getting reputation as a selling or feeder club i.e. Losing our best players players now think our club is a stepping stone

I think it's time Liverpool fans if they protest this time go after owners because under their ridiculous transfer policy alexis Sanchez is too old and his wages are too much lol

I've accepted that the party's over and we're done as a top tier club. We have enough financial clout to stay in the top 8 of English football but our maximum capability is an occasional title run (1996-97, 2001-02, 2008-09, 2013-14) and perhaps a cup here and there.

I blame David Moores for this - he saw Man Utd build an empire in the 90s but he was too slow to seek outside investment, improve our commercial opportunities and expand Anfield.

I've fallen out of love with football anyway - this is a rigged sport. At least in cricket there's some semblance of an even playing field but the financial doping and grotesque levels of money these Wall Street tycoons, Russian oligarchs and Arab oil sheikhs can pour in on fees/wages means we cannot outcompete the deep squads others have.

UEFA are spineless cowards who've allowed this game to become monopolised by the super rich. The Champions League is a joke - you can predict the winner nearly every year.

At least we've YouTube so we can revisit the glory days.

Fair points

That's why imo I think there is a need for what we call a club level European super league , that my vex the brexiteers in Uk but I think it is needed due to the disparity you have in leagues like the premiership and la liga where it's the same teams challenging for the title .

This is how it should be organised at the start.

La liga - 3 teams
Premiership -3 teams
Bundesliga -3 teams
Italy - 3 teams
France - 3 teams
Dutch - 3 teams
Portugal - 1 team
Belgium - 1 team

So the top teams who finish in those respective leagues , you will have 20 teams for the super league these teams then won't play in their own domestic league apart from domestic cups like fa cup or EPL cup etc

The league for them will be the European super league .

Top 4 in the European super league then will go out in playoffs to determine the super league champions so even if u end number 1 in the league you will end up playing team 4 in the league at the end of season play off and then the winner will play the winner of number 2 vs 3

Then there will be a game to determine who comes number 3

At the bottom end of the super league 3 teams will be relegated

To earn promotion into the super league will be via the europa cup but no super league team can play in the europa cup .

So the finalists in europa cup and the team that comes 3rd will go to an end of season playoffs from the 3 teams who were relegated in super league and the 3 that win the matches will end up in the super league and 3 losers will go back to their domestic league

So example
Borussia
Anderlecht
Fc Porto

Get relegated from super league

Liverpool win europa cup
Sampdoria came runners up in europa cup

Rubin Kazan win ac Milan in the 3/4 playoff

So u put the europa league teams I. One pot
Liverpool
Sampdoria
Rubin kazan

And 3 relegated super league teams in one pot
Borrusia Dortmund
Anderlecht
Fc Porto

The balls are drawn

Borrusia vs Rubin

Anderlecht vs Liverpool

Fc Porto vs sampdoria

Borrusia win
Liverpool win
Fc Porto win
These teams will then play in the European super league whilst losers will go back to their domestic league

I think this will be a much better system

It will increase the competitive nature of domestic leagues

And the europa cup will have value because it will be the only means of Having a chance to get into the super league .

Qualification for the europa league will be top 3 in premier league plus the domestic cup winners so for the premiership 5 teams will enter the draw for europa cup and similar system will exist for the rest of domestic leagues across Europe .

Wasn't there a Kuwaiti bid to buy Liverpool but Robinson opted to go with the Americans ..... or am I just imagining it.

Dubai international capital in 2008 headed by Amanda stavely but lost out too tom and Jerry from USA

She came back in 2016 with Chinese backers everbright to buy a stake but fsg wouldn't budge

Sad thing is the same group that lost out too tom hicks and George gillet , then went and bought Man City

A small club who were relegated to division 2 Lol then bought up to premiership by joe royale and then relegated again lol

And now look they have guardiola as manager winning titles and up there with the big boys

That could have been Liverpool if we were bought by dic

Correction for the above post dic group never bought Man City it was bought by prince mansour although his wife is the daughter of the sheikh al makhtoum who dic belongs too

But both dic and mansour bids were headed by Amanda Stavely pcp group .

There's a recent interest from her for Newcastle utd

High tempo game , woeful defending atm

Jonny Evans mistake as well for West Brom

West Brom
Leading 2-1
