New Delhi/London: The famous Havelock road in London’s Southall which is known for its Sikh population has finally been renamed as Guru Nanak Road, the Ealing Council officials in West London said on Sunday. The new name will come into effect in 2021 after completion of necessary procedures.

The announcement is a timely celebration ahead of Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 30, a major Sikh festival.

Notably, the largest gurdwara in London, Sri Guru Singh Sabha, is also located on Havelock Road.

The move was first announced in June this year with the rise of ‘Black Lives Matter’ campaign in London that led to a review of public spaces in the city and elsewhere in the United Kingdom.

The council’s cabinet decided on July 14 that the road should be renamed to commemorate the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, as a tribute to the Sikh war veterans who have resided over generations in the area.

I’m against such renaming projects - sure if you build a new road or estate name it something like this (if the locals want it) but where does this all end?

It’s no different to folks in India wanting to rename places like Akbar Road, Ahmedabad, Muzaffarnagar, Faizabad etc.

I agree with you , renaming places is not the right thing , people are attached to those places with original names.

Doesn't hurt anyone and pleases the Sikh community but generally naming a new road is all fine but changing names of precious places cannot become a norm. There's a lot of work that goes into changing a road name.

Southall is mini-Punjab. You are more likely to see plump aunties in salwar-kameez there.

Go to Leicester (mini-Gujarat) if you want to see plump aunties in saris.

I love multi-kulti, I am on record as saying I wish it was possible in Pakistan, perhaps one day it will be inshallah. But in the meantime I have to reflect the views of the majority and Indian posters themselves who have staunchly defended the rights of France to preserve their culture.

If wonderfully named streets like Havelock Road end up being renamed to Guru Nanak Road, then where will the future Harry Potter books and films be inspired? Will the Harry and Ronald end up studying at Paramjit college instead of Hogwarts?

Future books will be inspired to have sikh and muslim characters. a white harry is about the whites racial and cultural privilege. having a brown harry puttar studying in paramjit singh brar college with a punjabi muslim sidekick will show that multi kulti has truly arrived in your native country.

I am sorry, if we wanted to watch Hari Puttar, there wouldn't have been copyright infringement legal action against Indian ripoff of Harry Potter. Despite being an avowed fan of multi kulti, while there is one Indian on these boards who shows off about successful integration, I feel it is my duty to object to changing names of English streets after subcontinental religious figures.

What's more I am sure the well integrated Indians of PP who are all champions of local culture will agree with me.

As an BJP fan, you should know better than most. BJP are changing names because of hatred against minorities. This is the opposite, names are being changed because of the love of minorities.
