"M. Amir should reconsider his retirement decision and must play Tests for Pakistan" : Shoaib Akhtar

ISLAMABAD, Aug 22 (APP):Former pacer Shoaib Akhtar wants fast-bowler Mohammad Amir to reconsider his decision of retirement from Tests cricket and give his best for Pakistan like he performed for the English County side Essex.

Amir, who was playing his final first-class game, finished with figures of 6 for 64 in a winning cause for Essex against Kent in Canterbury, and he looked as lethal as he ever had, generating enough pace and swing.
His top bowling display had made critics question his decision to quit playing Tests for Pakistan at the tender age of 27.
However, Akhtar said that Amir’s rich vein of form probably has to do with the conditions in England but urged the southpaw to still revisit his decision.

“Is the management in England better? Or are the wickets better there? Is Amir being handled better there that he is taking wickets? All of this is true, and also there is no pressure on Amir there. Still, I think Amir should have given the same performances for Pakistan,” Akhtar said in a YouTube video.

Akhtar said boards must devise a system to prevents young cricketers to quit test cricket. “There must be a system that a cricket on whom the board has invested heavily should not even be able to consider retirement for the first five-six years of their career,” he said.

“People’s concern is genuine. Amir should reconsider his retirement decision and must play Tests for Pakistan,” he said.

The Rawalpindi Express also reminded Amir that a player is remembered by the performance he does for his country and not in county. “Legacies are built on what you do for your country. No one remembers what you do in counties.

He was of the view that people would always remember the 1999 Kolkata Test in which he completely changed the complexion of the game with consecutive late-swinging yorkers that sent Rahul Dravid and Tendulkar on their way. “Simlarly Wasim Akram’s ‘92 spell, and also the one in ‘93 in England Tests. Sachin Tendulkar’s innings in Tests will also be never forgotten,” he said.

not sure if Aamir will be an automatic choice ... apart from eng.... i think Abbas, SSA and Wahab will be higher in the picking order ... in UAE he will be no6 below 2 spinners

Amir is not physically fit enough to last in tests in coming years so I think he might have made the right decision. As mentioned earlier take 5 years out of any athlete’s career where he doesnt even have international level facilities available to him let alone playing at international level and he isnt even sure if he will ever be selected again, that bowling muscle deterioration is something which is huge especially at the time when you were supposed to be growing those muscles by playing regular cricket.

amir's mindset and physical capability is not the same as it used to be. he doesnt have the same hunger and it shows in his demeanor and bowling.

We need to get over it. He doesn’t want to play tests. As if Amir was a great test bowler. Other than that series in 2010 and a few spells after that in tests he has been mostly average in tests.

No he shouldn't. It's better that he's gone now we can invest in better bowlers.

Can't see him changing his mind in the near future.

I think he's got his future all mapped out.

There is obviously more money n T20's and which requires lot less effort. No wonder Amir doesnt want to play Test cricket. He has lost a lot of time (due to his own fault of course!) and i looking to prolong his career and earn as much moolah as possible.

This is good for other bowlers in Pakistan who can now get a look in and excel. I just hope they dont go the T20 route once they make a breakthrough in Test Cricket. I just hope other bowlers donot follow in Amir's footsteps and leave test cricket.

5 year ban is just an excuse. The guy had it not been for the spot fixing scandal would have been dropped for poor performance or would have done something financially beneficial to himself at the expense of the country

Wahab is retired, and I hope he doesn't come back. His last few performances in test cricket have been embarassing. Ran in 5 times in Australia to bowl a ball, and looked like a retired club cricketer against Astralia in the UAE last year.

I think the PCB should have a final talk to him regarding Test cricket and mybe try to convince him to play outside Asia, especially with the Test Championship starting and Pakistan touring England next year. He is starting to swing the ball again, and he can be big threat in England and West Indies where they use the Dukes ball. West Indies has become a fast bowling paradise lately.

I see Mohammad Amir going the Azhar Mahmood, playing internationals for a few years before just playing T20 leagues and playing for Essex every year.

No. He doesn't deserve to play tests. He can't just do the country like that. If he feels playing for the country in the premier format is not important we shouldn't be begging him to come back. He was never that good anyways.

Mickey Arthur understood this dilemma.

Mohammad Amir is Pakistan’s best Test bowler outside Asia, but in Asia is not tall enough or quick enough to succeed.

If Pakistan didn’t have a vacuum at senior level, Amir’s Existing Deal could have been extended: be a white ball specialist who is called back for Tests outside Asia.

There are six World Test Championship qualifying series.

Pick Amir for the away series in Australia, England and New Zealand.

Let him extend his career by being excused from the Asian series against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa.
