He is the obvious choice, and if the ECB have any sense this will happen sooner rather than later.

Root's own form has taken a huge dip since he took over the test captaincy. He doesn't seem to be a natural captain and only got the captaincy because of the skewed logic "make your best batsman your captain."

Buttler by contrast has shown he is an effective captain and unlike Root, he seems to enjoy the added responsibility and his batting thrives when he is captain.

He has been VC in LOIs for a little while now and was made VC of the test team for this series vs India. The only question mark was whether he was a sure starter in tests but this first test century (in difficult circumstances) will silence the doubters.

Make his test captain, and let Root focus on his batting. Buttler can take over from Morgan as LOI captain in due course.
 
It could work but it is also a bit of a risk. As Test captain, Buttler might try to alter his playing style a bit to take more responsibility, which may prove to be counterproductive.

He is at his best when he is playing aggressively with a clear mind. You don’t want a precious talent like him get bogged down by the weight of captaincy.
 
I'd give him captaincy and the gloves. Easier to hold down his place in the side as wicketkeeper rather than pure bat, and let's him concentrate on captaincy.

Bairstow's batting is being underused, and him giving up the gloves and promoting up the order might make England's batting look more solid.
 
Root averages 47 in Tests and I believe is captaining in his 20th test match against India right now so how has his performances taken a huge dip? Whoever takes over as England captain is going to face the exact same problems as he is right now.

In tests, England are a team of individuals. Broad and Anderson are on their last legs, No star quality upcoming bowler, Cook scores once and does nothing else in 5 innings and will probably keep his place till he wants too. The other opening slot has been a rollercoaster for the last few years.

Let Root have his own team and own set of players and I'm sure he'll be fine. He's still learning.

What's his average as captain?

Then you will see.
 
Pretty sure that Root averages over 50 in Tests, both before and after he earned the captaincy.

It's been getting worse every series and the rate at which he scores 50/100s has drastically dropped. In fact when was the last time he scored a test century?
 
Butler should not captain. He should play as a player. Jonny is the obvious choice as captain.
 
This won't be a popular opinion but I'd have Ben Stokes as captain. Leads by example, courageous and an intelligent cricketer.

Lol the vice would be more of a captain cuz the actual captain would be in and out of court
 
I think Morgan has the best captaincy brain in England.
I would rather he was picked again for Tests and made if a change is skipper is necessary, then make Morgan captain.
 
The best option would be Butler as Cook is a geezer, Root is not captaincy material, and Stokes is pretty much to the ECB what Warnie was to the ACB.
 
He just managed to nail down a position in the England test team. Root's captaincy is not the problem it's the brain-dead manner in which they react during pressure situations. I can assure you that even if Buttler was captain -- which he might well become after one of England's batterings in Asia or Australia -- England would still lose a test or two at home and get hammered everywhere except South Africa. At the end of the day for atleast the next 5 years, England's core team will remain largely the same and when you have players in the side with so many fundamental flaws things don't really change

Bairstow is a better keeper than Buttler and has not shown leadership potential.

Push Bairstow up to open, give Buttler the captaincy and get Foakes in behind the poles.

Well, that seems wrong because Cook, Anderson and Broad will be long gone in five years.

How can bairstow play up the order when he has to keep for an entire innings? Not that im convinced bairstow is a proper top 3 bat anyway. He struggles when the conditions aid swing/seam and he plays with hard hands . The lineup should be Pope at 3, Root at 4, Bairstow 5, Buttler with gloves at 6 ( your best counterattacking batsman) and Stokes and Woakes/Curran at 7 and 8 respectively. That lineup should be very strong atleast in England.

Because, if you read my post, Foakes is the keeper.

Bairstow has got the mentality to lead. I'm confident he'll be up to the challenge.

Only Anderson will be long gone. Broad and Cook can easily play for five years if they continue performing at home.
 
Not sure about tests, but Butler will be the most important wicket of next year world cup.

This English summer he has made his runs whenever the conditions were not as good for bowling I think. Whenever there has been some swing or seam he has struggled his way and then got out. Batting at 5 if he can't even average 40 with the bat, im not sure giving up keeping and going up the order is gonna do a whole lotta good. They should get that Livingston guy to open I guess and pope at 3.

He has got out to some unplayable deliveries. Swinging in to middle and hitting off stump.
Even against Pakistan at Lords he had a cracker to get him out.

Anyway, he does need to concentrate on batting and not have the burden of captaincy.

I still take the view that Morgan should be captain.
 
Suddenly he seems to have become our best batsman in all formats.
 
Has Morgan shown any form in FC cricket? Does he even play it?

I wouldn't mind seeing him as Test captain.

Terrible form & absolutely disastrous performances so far from Morgan.
He is finished as a test cricketer.
 
Buttler may take over in LO cricket when Morgan is moved on. So wouldn't be surprised if he was made test captain.

Agree with op.

Buttlo all the way. Also it will be one reason for me to like England team more. Right now England is one of my least fav team.
 
He has been given the vice captaincy in the wake of Stokes’s deserved sacking, so he is a heartbeat away already. I think he will be the England captain in a year or two when Root finally packs it in and asks to be considered as a batsman only.
 
Bairstow is a lager lout who couldn’t hit a cricket ball with a tennis racket at the moment.

So you make captains based on the current form of the player? Not too long ago in this series only Bairstow was playing beautifully. His performance has gone down due to an injury.
