Zimbabwe have axed their coach Dav Whatmore and captain Hamilton Masakadza just days before the arrival of India for a five-match limited-overs tour.

Zimbabwe Cricket cited the team’s poor performance at this year's World Twenty20 tournament where they failed to make it out of the preliminary stage.

Former Australia test batsman Whatmore, who coached the country of his birth Sri Lanka to the World Cup title in 1996, was handed a four-year contract in April last year.

He will be replaced on an interim basis by former South Africa fast bowler Makhaya Ntini.

“Head coach Davenell Whatmore has had his contract terminated with immediate effect. Bowling coach Makhaya Ntini has taken over in an acting capacity until the appointment of a substantive head coach,” Zimbabwe Cricket said on Tuesday.

“The board has also relieved Zimbabwe top-order batsman Hamilton Masakadza of the captaincy for all three formats of the game. His deputy, Graeme Cremer, will act in the interim.” Zimbabwe have also signed former South Africa all-rounder Lance Klusener as a batting coach for two years.

Zimbabwe play India in three one-day internationals in Harare starting on June 11, as well as two Twenty20 games.

The light at the end of the tunnel just disappeared.

Tough time ahead.

It's called hyper inflation - sometimes in WW 2, in Germany & Hungary, you might have needed a suitcase full of notes to buy a meal ........

I think, this prolonged hyper inflation in Zimbabwe is artificially maintained by Mugabe & his gong, so that whatever black money they make or support fund they receive from UN makes them mega rich in Zimbabwe. Apart from few people in power, rest of the countries are basically beggar, depending on Mugabe's mercy. This should never had been the case for such a large (for 13mn people, half the size of Pakistan) country with so much natural resources & beauties.

Zimbabwe can become a middle income country only from tourism ......... and they have one of the highest reserves of Platinum, Gold, Nickel, Diamond & Iron ores; while their land & climate is one of the best for tobacco, coffee & tea production. Once I toured Zimbabwe in my younger days to see Victoria falls - one of the most beautiful countries in world.

Mugabe and co have stolen Zimbabwe 's cricketing future and its only a matter of time before SA joins them. The African elite make the PK elite look like angels.

What a ridiculous cricket board. Who wants to work for Mugabe's henchmen in the ZCB - they've made that job a poisoned chalice for any self-respecting international coach.

Alan Butcher's recent book The Good Murungu was startlingly revealing of the extent of political interference in selection matters.

A mutually agreeable decision I guess. Dave wont get any severance pay and in turn he can leave and apply for Team India coaching position. If it clicks, then lottery. If not, he can still get some decent gig at county or CPL.

As much as I hate to say this, I think Zimbabwe cricket is pretty much a lost cause.

Feel bad for Dav, I think the team was improving under him... however just 1 win in 2015 WC and then losing to Afghanistan in back to back bilateral series and then in the WT20 was the final nail in the coffin for Dav's coaching stint. The results were just not coming.

Whatmore was exposed in his stint with Pakistan. A very bad career move.

It is all downhill for him now, can't see any big team hiring him in the future.

Such a shame to see Zimbabwe in this state. While everyone talks about getting Ireland test match cricket, Zimbabwes state has been forgotten about. Wish icc could help teams like sri Lanka west indies us and Zimbabwe improve

Will Whatmore be the first man to coach all ten Test-playing nations at some level? :misbah

Countries coached so far - Pakistan, SL, BD, India (NCA), England (Lancashire), Zimbabwe

Only SA, Australia and NZ are left. :yk

His coaching carer is going down now.

He has never been deemed good enough by the likes of Australia, England, India, SA, NZ etc. to coach at the international level.

He is a minnow coach, if such a thing exists. Good enough for minnows and junior teams, but when the expectations are high and results need to be delivered, he is out of his depth.

Failed in his second stint with SL, failed in the IPL and also failed with Pakistan.

Ranatunga, in spite of winning the World Cup alongside him in 96, doesn't rate him as a coach and warned us multiple times.

In fact, it was on his advice that we decided to hire Lawson in 2007 instead.

Cape Town - Former South Africa fast bowler Makhaya Ntini has stepped down from his role as Zimbabwe’s bowling coach with immediate effect, the board announced on Sunday.

The now 40-year-old Ntini, who played 101 Tests for the Proteas, has been mentoring Zimbabwe’s bowlers since February 2016 but has now resigned ahead of a busy year for the Africa country.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) said in press release: ‘Since his appointment in February 2016, Makhaya has brought a wealth of experience and practical knowledge to ZC, and ZC and its players and coaching staff were fortunate to have had an opportunity to work closely with him during this period, and to learn from his many years of playing for Cricket South Africa at the highest level.

Charismatic, ever-helpful, hard-working and always full of energy, Makhaya’s experience and immense knowledge of the game have helped to bolster the ZC national team into a competitive outfit that went on to record Zimbabwe’s first ever away one-day international series win over Sri Lanka in 2017.

“And while reluctantly accepting his resignation, ZC fully appreciates and respects the reasons behind Makhaya’s decision, and wishes him all the very best for the future.”

Zimbabwe start an ODI tri-series on 15 January in Bangladesh which will include the hosts and Sri Lanka.

The Africa side will then host the 2019 World Cup qualifiers in March, which will include teams like Afghanistan, Ireland and West Indies.

Zimbabwe have Heath Streak so don't need another coach with a bowling background.

They need to improve the standard of coaching at domestic level.
