José Mourinho has aired his frustration at Manchester United’s summer transfer process as he revealed he expects only one more signing before the deadline, and Nemanja Matic will miss the start of the season with injury.

The United manager claimed he submitted a list of five transfer targets to his club in March, specifically executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, but is still waiting for all to be signed with 12 days remaining in the window. Central defenders Harry Maguire and Yerry Mina have both been linked with moves to Old Trafford but Mourinho does not hold out hope of two additions before 9 August.

“I would like to have two more players,” the United manager said. “I think I am not going to get two. I think that it’s possible I will have one. I gave a list to my club of five names a few months ago and I wait to see if it’s possible to have one of these players. If it’s possible, it’s possible. If it’s not, it’s not. If it’s possible, it’s good. If not then we keep fighting and working and believing in the players that we have.”

Mourinho believes United will be “in trouble” at the start of the Premier League season given the amount of World Cup absentees and injuries during pre-season. The weakness of his current squad was exposed by Liverpool on Saturday when Jurgen Klopp’s team dominated their International Champions Cup fixture and won 4-1 in Ann Arbor.

“This is nothing to do with reinforcements,” he said of the heavy defeat. “The reinforcements are [Paul] Pogba, [Marouane] Fellaini, [Victor] Lindelof, [Marcus] Rashford, [Jesse] Lingard, [Nemanja] Matic, [Antonio] Valencia. These are reinforcements. This is not our team ... We started the game with almost half of the players who are not even going to belong to our squad on August 9. They will not be here.

“This is not our squad. Reinforcements, you mean players that I would like to buy, that’s another thing, but this is not my squad. This is not even half my squad, or 30% of it. So don’t look to this.

“Today we have four or five players who are dead because they care with the club and try to give everything, even risking themselves, because they don’t want to let all the kids play by themselves against Milan, against Liverpool. As an example, Eric Bailly was not going to play and when he saw that [Chris] Smalling was injured in the warm up, he decided by himself that he didn’t want another kid on the pitch. It was not fair on Alexis [Sánchez] and [Juan] Mata and [Ander] Herrera.

“We are just trying to play these matches the best we can, and I think the boys did very well until the gasoline went. When it went, it was goodbye. Liverpool had the majority of their players, and they rotated their players. [Mo] Salah played 45, then 45. We can’t do it. Herrera 90 minutes, [Andreas] Pereira 90 minutes ... gasoline over. So what did this game give me? Nothing at all.”

Mourinho revealed afterwards that Matic had undergone surgery on an unspecified injury suffered at the World Cup and will miss the start of the new campaign: “Matic is out for the start of the season. He came from the World Cup with an injury, and the time he had to rest was not enough to resolve the problem. He went to Philadelphia to a specialist and he had surgery immediately to try not to lose more time.”

The United manager was also critical of Anthony Martial, who left the US tour to attend the birth of his second child on Thursday but has yet to return. “He has the baby and after the baby is born – beautiful baby, full of health, thank God. He should be here and he is not here. Now we have Real Madrid and after that we have Bayern Munich and that is our start.

“I just hope the boys on deserved holidays take care of themselves a little bit and somebody wants to do what [Marcus] Rashford and [Phil] Jones do, which is to be back a little bit earlier to try and help the team because for the beginning of the season we are going to be in trouble.”

He's really getting on my nerves

Not surprised that many think that Mourinho is actually called Moanrinho. :yk

This is not going to end well.

A lot of Man Utd fans irritated with Jose and Jose equally irritated with Man Utd.

He's clearly losing his head. He's borderline asking for a lawsuit from Martial because of his comments on his maternity leave, seriously just because he's a professional footballer who's male he doesn't deserve the 2 weeks off legally allowed to anyone working the UK?

JM knows that the players decent but things are not coming together. The problem is twofold: Pogba- a player with an undefined role, what is he, a MF, a 10 or what? And the 2nd problem is that players are in fear of JM and that is reflected in their insipid displays.

This is not going to end well.

however most man utd - fans are irritated due to the fact he (mourinho) cannot play attacking/attractive football.
Saj - wherever he has gone - its the fans who start to get annoyed by him and then the board- down the line he gets sacked.

He has spent a lot of money. He cannot beat man city to the title - however with this team he has - it should not have been this poor.

what annoys me is that paul scholes just has a go at paul pogba - yet he refused to talk ow crap the English players have been - bar lingaard.

I have no idea how mata is still at man utd - mans been average for years. Defense is poor - darmian wants out - yet morinho who doesnt play him - wants him to stay.

Whats happened to smalling- phil jones - luke shaw, that swedish centre back, rojo, martial near enough wants out - herrera is average, carrick is too old, rashford will be destroyed, fellaini.

the team is on high wages - only players who have played consistant good - de gea, a.young, valencia, matic and lukaku - rest look bang on average to poor

If you gave the United squad to Klopp or Gurdiola, would they do better? Yes is the answer. JM wants solid winning teams but if you dont win, then questions are asked.

correct, however this over protective rubbish comments - need to stop- in todays game, they are too protective and i do believe this is one of the reasons why no one has stepped up.

Imagine if keane had to go through this - he would have beaten up so many players by now and mourinho

4-1 pre-season defeat didn't help his mood. :)

Since he was sacked from Chelsea, he's not the same manager.

Mourinho was in a bad mood after Liverpool whooped his Man Utd yesterday. Man Utd have signed Fred and Pariera for what it's worth. Mourinho thinks of himself to highly when in reality there is nothing special about him at all. His style of play is boring and outdated to watch putting it mildly. Who stopped him from playing a stronger team that he is crying about it? Seems as though the self proclaimed "biggest club in the world" are struggling to sign players with his list of five being rejected by the owners or perhaps the players he wants to sign rejected Man Utd. The purpose of these "friendly matches" is to get players match fit for the new season yet Man Utd hardly played any first team players with two weeks for the new season to start. You ask Mourinho a question and he gives a totally irrelevant answer. The man has clearly lost the plot!

Manchester United face a "difficult season" unless they strengthen their squad before Thursday's transfer deadline, says manager Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils ended their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 defeat at German champions Bayern Munich on Sunday.

Javi Martinez headed home a second-half winner to give Bayern victory in a match they dominated.

"My CEO knows what I want and I still have a few days to wait and see what happens," Mourinho said on MUTV.

"The other clubs who compete with us are really strong and already have fantastic teams. Or they are investing massively like Liverpool, who are buying everything and everybody.

"If we don't make our team better it will be a difficult season for us."

United have so far signed three players this summer - Brazil midfielder Fred for £47m, Portuguese defender Diogo Dalot and third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant.

They open the Premier League season against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Friday.

Former chief executive Peter Kenyon said on Sunday he believes Mourinho needs to find a way of "working out" his issues with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

United ended their preparations for the new season in uninspiring fashion, struggling to threaten Manuel Neuer's goal.

Marcus Rashford's pace gave the hosts something to think about, but the Englishman was isolated for much of the game as the visitors failed to supply their forwards with any real service.

World Cup-winning midfielder Paul Pogba, Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku and England forward Jesse Lingard were among a number of players missing from United's pre-season fixtures.

And the return of some of those established stars will only enhance the team's attacking potential.

However, with speculation surrounding Anthony Martial's immediate future, and several others sitting out the club's entire pre-season, it is unclear whether United will be in a much stronger position when they open their domestic campaign against Leicester.

But Mourinho's pre-match comments suggest he is still looking for reinforcements.

Eric Bailly was forced off in the second half after a collision with Serge Gnabry, and central defence is an area the Portuguese is reportedly interested in strengthening, but it may be that Sunday's performance will emphasise a growing concern in the final third of the pitch.

Third season syndrome. Mourinho will probably be not United's manager next season.

Mourinho is finished. He has a cut a frustrated, bitter and deluded figure at Old Trafford.

His failure to win the Champions League with Real Madrid because of Messi, and the disastrous second season at Chelsea in his second stint has taken its toll on him, and his football has become outdated.

Man United should have brought him in 2013 after SAF retired, instead of wasting time with Moyes and Van Gaal and allowing Mourinho to humiliate himself at Chelsea.

Mourinho has always had eyes on replacing SAF, and he wouldn’t have gone back to Chelsea had Man United made an offer when he left Madrid.

Cape Town - Premier League giants Manchester United have reportedly turned down an approach from Barcelona for star midfielder Paul Pogba.

Sky Italy said that Barca offered £45 million plus Colombian defender Yerry Mina and Portuguese defender Andre Gomes in exchange for the French World Cup winner.

With three years left on his contract, Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola is said to have been in Manchester on Monday to try and force the move.

However, according to the report the Red Devils do not want Pogba to leave having signed the midfielder for a club record fee of £93.25 million in 2016.

The 25-year-old returned to training this week after extra time off following France’s World Cup win last month.

With the Premier League transfer deadline closing on Thursday (August 9), United would have two just days to find a replacement.

The Spanish window does not close until August 31, meaning Barcelona have until the end of the month to try and sign Pogba in this window.

Mina, 23, was one of Colombia’s stars at the recent World Cup, the towering central defender scoring three goals in three games.

Gomes has 29 caps for Portugal and joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2016 but has struggled to hold down a starting position, making just 16 appearances last season.

United begin their league campaign on Friday evening against Leicester City.

Pogba for £45m and Gomes and Mina? Embarrassing offer. Do a counter offer of Fellaini + Shaw and £45m for Messi.

Since when do pre-season results equate to how we'd do in the PL? Since we won none in 90 minutes I guess that means we're gonna end up 20th in the PL

JM is rightfully annoyed because the board hasn't backed him with the signings he wants. He wanted Perisic last season, voila Perisic had a great WC. He reportedly wants Willian and Aldie, but sadly the board isn't gonna pay £140m for guys who are 30. It's understandable but at the same time you can't expect to win or even challenge the PL when you got inexperienced players in the team.

CB is one of the most important areas for a team and the fact that we still have Smalling 8 years on who has had 1 great season with LvG says a lot. I can see us getting Toby but that's about it.

Then again, Man Utd have kept things under wraps and we signed Lukaku out of the blue (pardon the pun) even though we were in for Morata. I'm just gonna wait until Thursday, and then give it a month to see how we play when we actually have a full squad available post-WC.

I'm going to with Ed on this one, because with his previous transfers Jose has failed, he was after Lindelof for 12 months and when he got him, he didnt want him anymore after a few poor displays, he has failed to get the best out of Pogba, he has failed to utalise Sanchez properly and went and unbalanced the team.

The only signings of his that have worked are Matic and Lukaku. So i can understand why he has reservations on signing others.

Great win today and it looks like Jose has changed tunes - hes obviously realized this is MU and not Chelsea and he has no chance to win against Woodward.

If reports are true that Woodward has delivered the message to Jose that he must develop and support the youngsters rather then buy overpriced 30 year olds then hes a hero.

Would have hate to see us sell Martial only to see him turn into another Salah or De Bryne.

Bailly also looked like a rock today, just need to sort out his partner and im impressed with Fred and Peirera.

Team should be much better then last season with the addition of Fred and a new Pogba, also with Baily fit, so should run MC closer who have hardly changed since last season.

Man Utd are off to a good start with a home win. I didn't expect for a big win for them being the first match of the season.

Cape Town - Manchester United angrily denied claims that manager Jose Mourinho and midfielder Paul Pogba were involved in a training ground bust-up.

The Sun reported that the two had been involved in an angry exchange where Mourinho had ordered Pogba to hand in a transfer request if he wanted to leave the club "again".

The publication went on to claim that Pogba had informed Mourinho to in future refer to his agent regarding formal communication between the two parties.

"They are angry, they're incensed, they're telling me there was no bust up between Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba," said Sky reporter James Cooper. "The reports of this are absolute nonsense. The relationship between the two people is good."

After a 2-1 win over Leicester City, Pogba told TV cameras that there were "things I can say and there are things that I cannot say, otherwise I will get fined".

Mourinho was apparently upset by Pogba’s comments after he had made the 25-year old captain for the match and praised his performance.

Premier League champions Manchester City are a "rich club" but "cannot buy class", says Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was responding to a question about City's £10m Amazon Prime documentary All Or Nothing, which was released earlier this week.

Pep Guardiola's side won last season's title with a record haul of 100 points.

Mourinho said: "I think you can have a fantastic movie, respecting others. You don't need to be disrespectful."

A film crew was given behind-the-scenes access - including to the dressing room - for an eight-part documentary about City.

Mourinho said: "I haven't seen it but I know a few things about the movie. My reaction is if you are a rich club you can buy top players, you cannot buy class. That is my first reaction.

"The second reaction is because I am in the movie, I could ask for some royalties."

City could have won the title by beating rivals United at Etihad Stadium on 7 April and were 2-0 ahead at half-time, but their opponents turned the game around to win 3-2.

The hosts had printed souvenir T-shirts in the hope they would clinch the title that day, but the celebrations were delayed by two weeks.

Mourinho added: "You know, a movie without me doesn't sell much. I needed to be there.

"But if they send me one of the shirts they had in the tunnel when we played there, the shirts that were saying: 'We did it on derby day.'

"If they send me one of these shirts, I give up about the royalties."

FT Brighton 3-2 Man United

That was honestly so awful to watch...

Don't see much if any creativity from this Man Utd side. Mourinho's miserable attitude seems to be effecting the players. Man Utd were lucky to lose by such a close margin against a well organised Brighton side. Don't know why they're not playing Rashford unless he is injured or something. The squad looks thin on paper as if players have disappeared then again Mourinho has wasted a lot of money on sheer dross as well:ma As a big Liverpool fan I am certainly not upset seeing them in such disarray:smith

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho should have signed Virgil van Dijk before Liverpool - pundit

That’s according to former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, who says he does not understand United’s transfer strategy.

The Red Devils were linked with several defenders in the summer transfer window with boss Jose Mourinho making no secret of his wish to bring in reinforcements.

United were linked with Tottenham star Alderweireld for most of the summer but refused to meet Spurs’ asking price.

They were also in for Harry Maguire and linked with Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina but were unable secure any of their targets as executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward refused to back Mourinho.

Liverpool star Van Dijk has performed admirably since his £75m move from Southampton and is now regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

And Murphy reckons United should have done all they can to bring in the likes of Van Dijk and Alderweireld.

“I don’t really understand Manchester United’s transfer strategy,” he told Bwin.

“If Manchester United wanted to sign a new central defender, they should have tried to sign Van Dijk but they were the only big club who didn’t.

“Van Dijk was the best available central defender on the market and they didn’t buy him.

“Alderweireld was the best available central defender on the market this summer and they didn’t buy him either. Why not?

“Those are two players who have proven to be two of the best defenders in the Premier League but Manchester United didn’t take advantage.

“I can understand why Manchester United didn’t want to pay huge money for Harry Maguire because he isn’t at that level.”

Mourinho’s belief that he needed to bring in new defenders was highlighted no more than in the 3-2 defeat to Brighton at the weekend.

Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly were both criticised for their display with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville suggesting that United have ‘no chance’ of winning the Premier League title with the defence that they have.

And Murphy says Mourinho is to blame for bringing the pair to Old Trafford and for their lack of confidence.

“Lindelof and Bailly aren’t looking like the strong central defenders that we know they are and Mourinho needs to take some of the responsibility for that,” he said.

“They’re lacking confidence and that is down to the manager, who has publicly spoken about how he wants to replace them with new signings and is showing his unhappiness that it didn’t happen.

“However, both Lindelof and Bailly also need to take responsibility because this is a chance to prove the manager wrong but they aren’t taking it.

“If a manager signs a player, they need to give the player an opportunity to pay them back, but Mourinho hasn’t even given Lindelof a chance.

“The board potentially didn’t want to back Mourinho with more money to spend on a central defender this summer because they’ve seen what he’s done with Lindelof.”

United already look way off the pace in the Premier League with rivals Manchester City and Liverpool winning both games so far and looking stronger than ever.

The Red Devils welcome Spurs, who have also won both matches, to Old Trafford on Monday.

Man Utd are on a collision course.

However what surprises me the most is the choice of Pogba as captain - he's hardly a role model or leader is he.

Hes probably the best person for it in this team, lacks leaders really, Matic or DeGea maybe but they hardly speak up.

Won't be surprised, if MU loses to Spurs at home, come Monday. It's not because, Spurs are great or MU are poor, rather I feel players would be happy to see Mou leave. This is probably 3rd or 4th time this guy has burnt bridge by 3rd year - Chelsea, Real, Inter, Chelsea and now at MU. His next employer should offer him 2 years initial contract and then see where it leads!!!

I think Ed realizes that Mourinho is done. He doesn’t have faith in him to challenge Man City.

I can see them roping in someone like Zidane next summer and giving him a blank cheque.

Mourinho is a yesterday’s coach now. His tactics are outdated, and I doubt if he is going to land another big job.

His team with Madrid, Chelsea (second stint) and Man United has damaged his reputation, not least because of his tendency to fall out with his players.

Before getting to Mourinho Ed Woodward needs to find his way out

He has time and again missed out on the top targets of the summer and recruiting esp in the Van Gaal era has been atrocious

I find it kind of funny as an Arsenal fan that Mourinho has ruined that snake Alexis Sanchez :))) I heard rumours of Zidane coming in for Mourinho and I can see him turning Utd's fortunes around, the likes of Wengers and Mourinhos need to be shown the door with their outdated tactics. This leaves Guardiola and Pochetino as being the best managers in the league. Every Utd player to me (except for De Gea) look plain average under Mourinho.

I don't see whats special about Zidane, he had a great squad at RM but was poor last season domestically, If it wasn't for the CL he wouldve been sacked, If woodward sacks Jose then theres no point in doing a downgrade unfortunatly there isnt much of any upgrade availble unless Woodward can convince Simone.

At this point, I don't see Jose getting sacked because the former players like Scholes and Gary are pointing the finger at Woodward for the mess.

Lots of talk about his tactics being outdated but let's not forget he came 2nd last season and only lost because of Pep, any other season he would have won it, if his tactics work to get results how are they outdated, for all Klops attractive football at Liverpool, what has he won? JACK he just about made it to top 4 last season and got outplayed by Jose in both fixures.

If you can't do the basics of defending then you will struggle.

United's defending at times today was shambolic.

Good to see Man Utd being put to the sword by Spurs. I don't see anything other then huff and puff in this Man Utd side that was so very evident. Alexis doesn't seem interested where as the rest are simply not good enough. They didn't really cause a team who made no signings in the summer any major problems at all. Mourinho can blame Woodward all he wants for not funding the players he wanted during the window but the fact remains the managers own signings so far have failed to impress. Where's Mata? Lakaku is probably the best chance they have of getting a goal in this side. Don't see the point in sacking Mourinho three games in to the season, at least wait until the New Year period. Man Utd are playing for a top four finish this season. Spurs took their chances brilliantly with Kane as always leading the way, congratulations.

Man United have been complete shambles post SAF. One bad appointment after the other, and the problems keep compounding. They have to tread very carefully now, because another bad appointment can make them completely irrelevant.

Zidane sounds romantic on paper, but he walked out of Madrid as soon as the going got tough and he had to rebuild the squad. Does he have what it takes to rebuild this mediocre team and challenge Man City. Maybe yes maybe not, but I think it is too big of a risk and Man United are not in a position to take a risk right now. However, the one good thing that Zidane comes with is pulling power. Not many players will say no to playing under him, such is the respect that he commands in the footballing world.

I think Man United should go all out for Simeone. One of the best managers in the world today and a superb tactician, who is wasting his time at Atletico - a team that will never be in a position to be dominant in Spain or Europe. Barcelona and Madrid will always be the top dogs in Spain. However, he could turn things around for Man United and make them a force again.

Thanks Mamoon. Good to see you are as concerned about Man U as many of us other Brit Pakistanis.

This is turning out to be a disaster

But Zidane is not the answer. We need someone with a clear philosophy and recruiting pedigree like Klopp, Guardiola etc. Zidane isn't that

Athletico has a fantastic squad this time after partial Chinese buy-out and their 68K stadium is completed. Look at their squad this year

No. Position Player
1 Spain GK Antonio Adán
2 Uruguay DF Diego Godín (captain)
3 Brazil DF Filipe Luís
4 Colombia DF Santiago Arias
5 Ghana MF Thomas Partey
6 Spain MF Koke (vice-captain)
7 France FW Antoine Griezmann (3rd captain)
8 Spain MF Saúl
9 Croatia FW Nikola Kalinić
10 Argentina FW Ángel Correa
11 France MF Thomas Lemar
13 Slovenia GK Jan Oblak
14 Spain MF Rodri

18 Portugal MF Gelson Martins
19 Spain FW Diego Costa
20 Spain DF Juanfran
21 France DF Lucas Hernández
23 Spain MF Vitolo
24 Uruguay DF José Giménez

That's as good a squad you can get. They have bought about 5/6 starters this year, for that it'll take a little time for them synchronize, but once settled this is a potential Champion squad.

I don't think there is an easy way out for MU. They might sack Mou, but Zidane who, no one will be able to fix it quickly.

Their problem is that Mou (& previous manager sine SAF) has bought players for own system, most of them at high fee or wage, but that MU squad isn't balanced - too many under performing forwards, too few defensive players, and those English defenders are at obnoxiously high wage in a long term contract - not easy to off load either. For a top manager among available candidates (Conte, Ancellotti, Simione, Rafa, Wenger... ), still it'll take at least couple of years and may be close to a billion $ out flow to bring that squad to per with MCity - at this point, I don't think Glazers has patience to give that much time, neither intention to spend.

Sacking Mou isn't the solution, but he might have to leave as a scape goat - most of the odds have been slashed to less than 1 odd for Mou's sacking quickly after the latest loss. Glazers are not going to sack the guy made a multi billion dollar asset for them - Ed Woodwards.

Pretty embarrassing to be a United fan right now.

Some of the players look like they've checked out and the season just started. :murali

No doubt that this is Atletico's best squad in years, but I can guarantee that Barcelona will win La Liga again and Atletico will not win the Champions League, which means another year wasted for Simeone in his career. He is too good a coach to play second-fiddle to Barcelona/Madrid in Spain and come short in Europe again and again.

If Atletico win La Liga or the Champions League any time soon, please feel free to call me out on it. However, I just don't see it happening. 2014 was an anomaly.

I did say that Mourinho would be disastrous for Manu and its turning out that way.

It seems he's now in full mental disintegration mode. His press conference after the game yesterday was a disgrace.

Mourinho's biggest challenge, a test to prove his greatness, was when he returned to Chelsea, his so called home and first love. That was going to be the acid test. Was he someone who bought titles or just a three season wonder who got on the wrong side of players until there was a mutiny?

Well we all know how it ended at Chelsea, the first time wasn't good but the second time should have sent alarm bells ringing to every top club in the world.

Once he spent £200m at Manu and failed to win the title in the first two years his fate was sealed.

Joses full mental break downs happen due to his arrogance conflicting with something - At RM he was unable to manage big names and when players arnt willing to listen to his instructions war begins, - At Chelsea it was his arrogance that the owner didnt release the funds for J.Stones and he felt betrayed.

Right now over here its totally different scenario - from what were hearing from him saying im not a manager, im a head coach now, seems like Woodward wants to manage the team choose the transfers and let Jose coach the players woodward gets him.

There are some things wrong with it and some not, but this isnt entirly Joses fault, woodward is partly to blame. BUT..

Jose was reluctant to play Shaw and wanted Rose, now we can see how terrible a decision it was and it because of Woodward that Shaw is now playing.

Then we have the Martial sitation, which i am confident if sold will come back to haunt us like DeBryne and Salah do to Chelsea.

However if Jose and Woodward continue playing around like this, it will only bring the club down - a new manager is not a fix because i dont see anyone better than Jose who can come in and rebuild, Zidane will be a bigger disaster than Moyes and will be sacked by summer if he came in today.

I predicted this without knowing the ins and outs of what happened at Chelsea and now at Manu.
Sometimes, we look for reasons that may not be there.
Like when we thought Wenger had this philosophy of not paying over the top and bringing up young talent.. Truth it seems is that he never had the money in the first place.

At the end of the day Mourinho has some personality issues and a superiority complex where he think's he's god's gift to management and when things invariably go south after three years the excuses start coming out.

I'm not saying Woodward is not at fault, but a club the size of Manu with it's branding etc would surely sort this sort of stuff out behind closed doors?

I think any sane person knew the truth that Arsenal never had the money however some people painted the picture Wenger only wants to bring up young talent but that perception or philosophy people had of him went out the window when he threw £40M on the rubbish Ozil and bid for Suarez.

People like to blame Jose but lets look at the facts too, he was completly fine at Porto and Inter and even RM to some extent other then his conflict with Ronaldo but he did see out his contract. The only problems he has had have been at Chelsea who have a history of treating managers terribly or atleas since it turned into a Russian Oligarch club. At Chelsea he was sacked and his replacement ended with the same fate - The managers apointed between his two stints at Chelsea all came to face more or less similar situations.

Also as you say we look for reasons that may be there or may not, lets not come to conclusions or assumptions that MU should have sorted this mess out and kept it behind closed doors - because at the end of the day nothing might be wrong and it might just be media speculations due to bad results.

Keeping an open mind to all this is perhaps the best way forward however his press conference after the game was a disgrace. He has a tendency to put others down just to make himself look good.
Also, the interview today by Real Madrid's previous president, Ramon Calderon, was not exactly a glowing reference to Mourinho as a person.

Look I may be proven wrong in the long run but with Mourinho it seems he has one way of playing.
The players initially buy into it. The defensive style, players playing with the hand breaks on, wins you titles but in the end the players or the fans, or both seem to get fed up of it and this is a pattern we've seen in his last three to four jobs (at Chelsea twice). If it doesn't work then its the players fault, or the owners or the referee or the press. Someone else is always to blame and then one loss becomes two until he leaves or is sacked.

This is why I didn't think he would fit at Manu.

I back Mourinho for now because i dont see a good enough replacement anywhere, Zidane is fav. and he is not even as good as Moyes when it comes to coaching or managment. Anyone can win titles when you have Ramos-Varane in defence, Modric-Kros-Cassmiro in MF and Ronaldo at the top, but still he did bad domesticly last year.

Also If you want to sack a manager you do it before the season begins so the new manager comes in and has time, not when you are 3 games into the season. Jose should be given atleast this season before a judgement is made on him.

Manchester United set for £4BILLION takeover bid with Saudi prince Mohammad bin Salman meeting Glazers in coming weeks

Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman is preparing a sensational £4billion bid to buy Manchester United.

The oil-rich Saudi Arabian – worth a staggering £850bn – is hoping to meet United owners Joel and Avram Glazer in the *Middle East in the next couple of weeks.

Avram Glazer had been due to fly to Riyadh this week where he was due to attend an International Forum but he is believed to have pulled out of the engagement.

United's co-owners know that they will have to tread carefully as the Crown Prince is embroiled in a tense diplomatic row over the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

But Bin Salman will not be put off his bid to take control at Old Trafford, although the Glazers are likely to want a solution to his personal problems before entering into any sort of dialogue.

The Glazer family, who bought United in 2005, will bank a massive profit of £2.2bn if a deal is done.

Their £790 million purchase was heavily leveraged in debt – a factor that has never made them popular with the Old Trafford fans.

Despite denials that they are prepared to sell, the fact that United’s share price has rocketed over the past months tells a different story in the financial world.

At one stage the shares hit an all time high on the New York Stock Exchange of $27.65. They are currently trading at $21.20 but are expected to once again rise as interest in the club from the Middle East increases.

Forbes recently valued United at £3.2bin but Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman - or MBS as he’s known - is ready to add £800million to that figure as he looks to gain control of Old Trafford.

It’s part of his grandiose Saudi Arabia vision 2030 in which he wants the country to diversify the economy away from oil.

His vast personal wealth allows himself the luxury of buying up the best – and he rates Manchester United as the most prestigious club in the world.

He is in the process of financing the building of three new cities in the Saudi Arabian desert and has recently splashed out £50m on a yacht.

United already have close ties with the country with Saudi Telecom being amongst their roster of sponsors and there is a huge rivalry with Abu Dhabi and Sheikh Mansour, who has transformed Manchester City with his riches.

MBS is determined to continue that into the Premier League in a head-to-head battle with City in which he is ready to invest heavily into the playing side.

Manchester United have been fined 8,000 euros (£7,080) by Uefa after pitch invasions in last month's Champions League game against Juventus.

A succession of supporters tried to reach Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo during and after the match.

Ronaldo, who was returning to United for the second time since leaving in 2009, took a selfie with one of them.

Afterwards, United said they were reviewing their "pitchside security protocol".

It also emerged a pitch invader got into Old Trafford with two toy guns.

The man did not take the guns on to the pitch but it is understood they were later found in his backpack.

It is the second time United have been fined by Uefa this season.

They were fined 15,000 euros (£13,203) for the late kick-off of their match with Valencia at Old Trafford last month.

I should have mixed feelings but I don't. The Glazers ain't been great. Fergie was supreme but one blot in his cookbook was taking the Irish backers to court over the racehorse Rock of Gibraltar, not only did he lose the case, the Irish sold their shares to the Glazers.

Jose Mourinho accused some of Manchester United's under-performing players of lacking "heart" against Crystal Palace - an attribute the manager believes is the bare minimum for his stuttering side.

Boos echoed around Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon as the hosts floundered against struggling Palace, who were unfortunate not to return south with more than a 0-0 draw.

United are now 14 points behind table-topping Manchester City - the same gap there is to rock-bottom Huddersfield - and, perhaps more worryingly, let this opportunity to bolster their top-four chances pass them by.

Mourinho had talked up those hopes ahead of the match and did not hold back after this "bad result" against Palace.

"Not enough intensity, not enough desire," the United boss said.

"So, I think we played a game like 'one more game' and I don't think the game is 'one more game'. I think it is a game we really need to win.

"If we played with the same philosophy against Young Boys (in the Champions League on Tuesday) then we don't win and then we have to go to Valencia to win the game in Valencia.

"So, there are matches that are special matches and that not just one more - and this one was not just one more.

"It was the first of eight Premier League games until the end of December and was a game we need to win, and my feeling is that there was not enough from the heart.

"You must play with brain, we must play also with heart and I think (there was) not enough heart."

Mourinho did not name names after the 0-0 draw, but appeared to call into question the character of Jesse Lingard, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in an interview aired before the game.

Of that quartet, only Lingard and Martial started on Saturday, when the decision to replace ineffective Paul Pogba with Alexis Sanchez was met by cheers from some at Old Trafford.

It was a maddening return from the international break for Mourinho but the United manager does not believe some of his players will feel that frustration.

"There are people that will have a bad dinner (this evening)," the Portuguese said.

"There is people that will enjoy a nice dinner and there will even be people that maybe will party. I think that's the way it is."

Put to Mourinho that it is surely the bare minimum to play with heart, Mourinho said: "I agree, I agree.

Sorry, this content isn't available on your device.

"What's the solution? You cannot change players' natures dramatically.

"The solution is that probably I have to make certain choices based on heart, and then probably I will blame myself because I will think heart is not enough and I am missing here some quality."

He bought mist of them. Please go. Is Zidane available?

Manchester United have triggered the one-year option on goalkeeper David de Gea's contract to avoid any uncertainty over his future heading into the January transfer window.

Spain international De Gea, 28, joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

His contract was due to end in the summer, allowing him to talk to overseas clubs from 1 January and sign a pre-contract agreement.

However, United have extended his deal for another year.

As manager Jose Mourinho confirmed after Tuesday's 1-0 win over Young Boys, United are keen to hold on to the keeper, who has won United's player of the year award four times in the past five seasons.

It is understood De Gea is open to the idea of remaining at the club, although as yet there has been no agreement on terms, with De Gea's camp mindful of the enormous salary United agreed to pay Alexis Sanchez when he joined from Arsenal 10 months ago.

Mourinho survives another week.

Another poor result though.

He should been sacked months ago.

3 seasons in , doesn't know his best line up, no set style of play, no development of players, and he has fallen out with a lot of players.

The players should take some responsbillity but I'm sure another manager could get more out of this team.

Man Utd will struggle to finish in the top 4 this season. If so Mourinho will walk in the summer for sure. They were lucky to get a draw against the Saints on Saturday.

If that looks more and more likely when Christmas games are over, I'm hoping Zidane is readied as soon as possible. Our luck wasn't there, it was at Anfield, thank God for Man City.

Except for the games against LFC, from now till the end of December "I am supporting united"... I never thought I would ever say those words as a LFC fan...
Also hoping Mourinho forces united to spend another 50-100 million on a 29-30 year olds in January...

They may have bottomless pit of money but it is still fun watching them waste it on "new gen Heskey" (Lukaku) and Grandpa Sanchez

I want them to lose to all top six teams bar Liverpool, if we gonna have a bad season, let's have a bad season. It's gonna be fun watching Liverpool slip up again a la Gerrard v Chelsea when finally Liverpool fans let their excitement get the better of them and they thought they were gonna win the title.

That was the day when I knew I was a good person at heart because I felt a smidgen of sorry for that loser club and its fans.

Saints sacked Hughes after drawing with ManU - that does tell something:)

If Jose were in charge of MCity, the first player he will boot out from his squad would be David Silva. Because, Jose doesn't know how to integrate technical players into his squad, rather always has opted for a raging bull at the tip of his attack. If Pogba plays for another teams under different managers rather than Jose, Pulis, Big Sam & may be Roy Hodgeson, he will prosper.

MU has money, but some of their recent business is mind blowing - Pogba @£90m, Lakaku @£75m (effectively close to £79m), Bailley @£32m, Lindalof @£30m, Matic @£40m and Fred at £50m. On top of that, Alexis, at 30 is on a 4 years contract for £350K/week base wage, and he still has 3.5 years left in his contract to burn MU's cash!!!

Yeah we all know the story about "Slippy G"..... I still think we over-achieved that season. Our team was not strong. The "D" was horrible. I do not regret as much as a lot of other LFC fans.

It is one thing to be in a financial distress and not win trophies . Usually a team that spends the most (wages + amortized transfer) usually wins the league. (Leicester is an anomaly) .
On the other hand it is really funny when the team that spends the most in Europe struggles to finish top 6 in EPL. That my friend is a sign of an actual loser.

No my friend we have plenty to burn, what is funny is that Lesta City have won the premier league before (if ever) Liverpool.

I am a little confused my friend,
Is Emirates FA cup the same as FA cup ?
Or
Is league cup the same as Carabao cup or the Milk cup ?

Tkay, football didn't start in 1992.

Reminds of a joke. Liverpool fan walks past shop window and sees a video cassette entitled Liverpool - The Glory Years. Excited he walks in and asks the price. "105 pounds" came the reply. Fan says "How come the video cassette is so expensive?"

Shop owner says " oh the cassette itself is five pounds, the video system to play it, cost 100".

I am a big fan of 70's and 80's Rock .. Queen, Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Stones etc... anyways since I still listen to them, so I cannot get rid of my cassette player. Sucks to be me...

Enough digression, or else I'm gonna go on Liverpool thread, can posters post messages direct to other posters?

I have always thought Freddy Mercury aka Farokh Bulsara is the best male vocalist in my opinion. No more digression please.

Here is a short and sweet joke related to this thread:

here is another joke

Chris smalling and Phil Jones..

I don't see the point in changing gaffer's after Xmas. Better to leave it for the summer break.

Readied is not quite the same as rubber stamped. I'm sure summat is underway, just think he would be good choice. Mourinho at United only had a chance to work straight after Fergie retired, tho I was still willing for him to have a go when he did. Not no more.

[MENTION=141165]jagatk[/MENTION] Yeah I would love for Jose to stay. Even if he leaves I don't see Man Utd winning the league anytime soon.
[MENTION=147223]Devilsadvokat[/MENTION] Jose won't be leaving before the summer. He has spent £400 million on dross to say the least. With that money Rafa would have done a better job at Newcastle.
