Manchester United | 2018/19 Season

I almost pity United fans, they've seen terrible football for so long now that their standards have dropped so much that the first half was acceptable. It was just parking the bus, getting the ball and running at City's back four with no end product. I never saw anything that showed me that United were going to score, they couldn't even score from an open goal... 1 shot on target the whole game is pretty pathetic.

Well City are a great team so sometimes you have to accept you're going to be on the back foot, but I guess you are right. United never look like scoring

That's my issue. It's true City are a great team so defending deep at points against them is fine but one shot on target is unacceptable at home, especially in a must win derby game.

Yep, every time we went forward I knew we wouldn't score, when City scored the first goal the mood at Old Trafford changed, we knew it was gonna be hard to come back.

United need a big rebuild, starting with a director of football, someone like Paul Mitchell or Van De Sar would be much better than that clueless clown Ed Woodward. Only then will Yanks chucking money at the issue (when they realise no UCL football is going to hurt their profits) will actually help United get back to the top echelon of world football.

Mike Phelan has been confirmed as Manchester United's assistant manager on a three-year deal.

The 56-year-old returned to United in December as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's backroom team.

Phelan, who was sacked as Hull City manager in 2017, had most recently held the role of sporting director at Australian side Central Coast Mariners.

He served as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant from 2008 to 2013, having been a first-team coach since 2001.

"Manchester United has been a huge part of my life since I joined as a player in 1989 and I am delighted to be able to continue that relationship in this key role," said Phelan.

Solskjaer added: "Mike has been invaluable to me since we returned in December. He brings a wealth of experience to this role with a long-established connection to the club."

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored twice as relegated Cardiff City won their final Premier League appearance to heap more misery on Manchester United.

Mendez-Laing opened the scoring for Cardiff from the penalty spot after being brought down in the box by Diogo Dalot, before scoring his second after the break.

Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge proved the visitors' hero as he foiled several United chances on a frustrating day for the hosts, who fielded six academy graduates.

Defeat means United have won just one of their final seven games of the season as city rivals Manchester City won the Premier League title for the second season in succession.

Cardiff travelled to Old Trafford just a week after confirmation of their relegation to the Championship and looked set to bid farewell to the top flight with a whimper as United dominated the opening exchanges.

But it was United who finished the match with their tails between their legs, unable to defy a resolute Bluebirds defence as they rained chance after chance on Etheridge's goal.

Cardiff's victory was their first over Manchester United since 3 April, 1954, when manager Neil Warnock was just five years old.

Nightmare season finally over for United
With Europa League status secured for next season, this campaign proved one to forget for United as they look to rebuild over the summer.

Ander Herrera confirmed this week he would leave the club after a five-year stay, and the exit door at Old Trafford could be busy with Antonio Valencia also departing.

Solskjaer looked to have turned United's fortunes around as they went 12 league games unbeaten after his arrival.

But the wave they were riding crashed in March, and the Norwegian will spend the summer building his own team rather than the one he inherited from Jose Mourinho in December.

But while he will be keen to bring in players from elsewhere, the club's youngsters will no doubt be much involved next season.

At 17 years and 223 days, Mason Greenwood became the youngest player to start a Premier League game for the Red Devils, and he more than showed his potential against Cardiff as the sole ray of sunshine in a gloomy United performance.

He had a handful of chances to score, twice going close with headers before Mendez-Laing scored his first and testing Etheridge not long after with a deflected effort on goal.

Eighteen-year-old Angel Gomes came off the bench late on with he and Greenwood scuffing chances to pull something back for United as they end the season in sixth, 32 points adrift of champions Manchester City.

It will "take a long time" for Manchester United to challenge for the Premier League title again, says manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United ended their season with a dismal 2-0 home defeat against relegated Cardiff to finish sixth, 32 points behind champions Manchester City.

The Red Devils won just one of their last seven league games.

"The last couple of months have been extremely hard for the team, the club and for the players," said Solskjaer.

Manchester United have agreed a deal "in principle" to sign Swansea City's Wales winger Daniel James.

The 21-year-old has completed a medical and will become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing since succeeding Jose Mourinho as manager at Old Trafford.

The deal is expected to go through when Fifa's international transfer window opens next week.

Swansea academy graduate James scored five goals in 38 appearances during a breakthrough 2018-19 season.

Twice-capped James, who almost joined Leeds United in January, is in Ryan Giggs' squad for Wales' upcoming Euro 2020 qualifying matches.

James withdrew from the recent Welsh training camp in Portugal following the death of his father and Giggs confirmed it was the player's choice to be included as the squad travel to face Croatia on Saturday and Hungary on Tuesday.

He scored the only goal to secure an important 1-0 win against Group E rivals Slovakia on his full international debut in March.

"He is a talent and when you have speed like that as well as the temperament that he has, he could play anywhere," Giggs said of James last month.

"If you go to United or any big club there is pressure on you. As a manager you want all your players to be playing to a higher level as they can and their ability deserves," the United legend added.

Known for his startling pace, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola noted how "incredibly fast" James is after his side were given an FA Cup quarter-final fright at Swansea in March.

Hull City, who he represented while at school, are due a sell-on fee worth about 5% of the up-front transfer.

Manchester United finished sixth in the Premier League, five points adrift of the top four, and will play in next season's Europa League.

Manchester United have signed England Under-21 right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace in a £50m deal.

The 21-year-old, who made his first-team debut for Palace last year, has agreed a five-year contract that will earn him up to £80,000 a week.

United are paying £45m up front, making Wan-Bissaka the club's fifth-biggest signing, behind Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Angel di Maria and Fred.

He is the club's second summer recruit, after Daniel James joined from Swansea.

Wales international James, 21, cost £15m.

The rapid rise of Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Wan-Bissaka, who has been on international duty this month at the European Under-21 Championship, joined Palace's academy when he was 11.

The defender was on £10,000 a week at Selhurst Park, the lowest-paid player in Palace's first-team squad.

His transfer was delayed by final negotiations between the clubs, which ended with Palace securing a 10% sell-on clause if Wan-Bissaka leaves United for more than £50m.

The deal is yet to be formally announced by the Old Trafford club.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: Man Utd sign Crystal Palace defender in £50m deal

Manchester United have signed England Under-21 right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace in a £50m deal.

The 21-year-old, who made his first-team debut for Palace last year, has agreed a five-year contract that will earn him up to £80,000 a week.

United are paying £45m up front, making Wan-Bissaka the club's fifth-biggest signing, behind Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Angel di Maria and Fred.

"It's an unbelievable feeling and an honour," Wan-Bissaka said.

Manchester United confirmed the signing on Saturday.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Wan-Bissaka was "one of the best upcoming defenders in the Premier League".

He added: "He has the right work ethic, talent and mentality to play for Manchester United and he fits exactly the type of player that we are looking to bring into the squad to help us improve and push on further."

The defender is the club's second summer recruit, after Wales international Daniel James, 21, joined from Swansea for £15m.

United have the option to extend Wan-Bissaka's five-year deal into a sixth year.

Wan-Bissaka, who has been on international duty this month at the European Under-21 Championship, joined Palace's academy when he was 11.

The defender was on £10,000 a week at Selhurst Park, the lowest-paid player in Palace's first-team squad.

His transfer was delayed by final negotiations between the clubs, which ended with the Eagles securing a 10% sell-on clause if Wan-Bissaka leaves United for more than £50m.

"We are immensely proud to have been part of Aaron's development as a player and a person," Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said.

Paul Pogba: Man Utd midfielder's agent hopes for 'satisfying solution'

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba's agent hopes "there will soon be a satisfying solution for all parties" regarding the player's future.

On Friday, Mino Raiola told The Times that the 26-year-old France international wants to leave United.

Pogba, who is on the club's pre-season tour of Australia, Singapore and China, said in June that "now could be a good time to move elsewhere".

"The player has done nothing wrong," Raiola told Talksport.

"He has been respectful and professional. The club has known his feeling for a long time.

"It is a shame other people only like to criticise without the right information, and I am also sorry that the club does not take any position against this."

United play Perth Glory on 13 July and Leeds United on 17 July, before flying to Singapore for a game against Inter Milan on 20 July.

They finish their trip with a game against Tottenham in Shanghai on 25 July.

Manchester United have received no offers for Pogba and are calm about the huge interest surrounding their £89m record signing, even though it threatens to dominate the opening days of the club's pre-season tour.

Real Madrid and Juventus have both declared an interest in the 26-year-old. However, there have been no bids and it is understood no negotiations have taken place.

It has been reported Pogba has two years left on his current contract, though this is effectively three because United included the option for an additional season to 2022.

That knowledge puts United in a very strong negotiating position should Real or Juventus follow up their interest with a firm bid.

For now, club officials are concentrating on preparations for the new season and believe Pogba will still be part of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad when United open their Premier League campaign against Chelsea at Old Trafford on 11 August.
